Notes of a Botanist on the Amazon & Andes, being records of travel on the Amazon and its tributaries, the Trombetas, Rio Negro, Uaupés, Casiquiari, Pacimoni, Huallaga, and Pastasa; as also to the cataracts of the Orinoco, along the eastern side of the Andes of Peru and Ecuador, and the shores of the Pacific, during the years 1849–1864. Edited and condensed, with a biographical introduction, portrait, seventy-one illustrations and seven maps. In two volumes.

London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1908 - 2 volumes, octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spines gilt, top edge gilt. Bookseller's ticket to rear pastedown of vol. 1. Slight wear to extremities, light offsetting to endpapers; an excellent set. Portrait frontispiece with tissue-guard to vol. 1, 71 illustrations and 7 maps, the final one folding. First edition. One of Wallace's later works was this edition of the botanical papers and diaries of his friend and co-Amazonian explorer Richard Spruce, who had died in 1894. "This work best reflects [Spruce's] gift for analysis, description, and narrative, along with his dry humour" (ODNB). Spruce was sent to South America in 1849 by Hooker, Bentham, and other botanists; Bentham was to receive, name, and distribute the plants Spruce sent home. Towards the end of the year Spruce travelled up the Amazon to Santarém, at the mouth of the Tapajos, where he met Wallace and the lepidopterist Henry Walter Bates. Spruce spent three years on the rivers Negro and Orinoco, entering Venezuela and discovering many plants new to science, including 200 species of fungi in the rain forest of the Uapes. His travels were interrupted in 1852 when he returned to the River Negro to assist Wallace, who had been struck down by malaria, and oversee his safe passage down river. After extensive travels, Spruce remained on the Pacific coast until 1864, when he lost his entire capital in the collapse of a Peruvian bank. He returned to England in 1867 after an absence of 18 years. The work stands as a landmark of ethnobotany. Among Spruce's discoveries were a number of plants with medicinal properties, including the datura and coca plants. (It was his samples of the latter, sent to Berlin, which helped Dr Nieman isolate the active principle of the alkaloid cocaine in 1858). Spruce also made the first detailed reports of ayahuasca and yopo and the ceremonial usage of these hallucinogenic plants. (See Schultes & Hofmann, Plants of the Gods, for numerous references to Spruce). With the bookplate of Joseph M. Gleason (1869–1942), an American Catholic priest, scholar and book collector.         RAW EDGES: STUDIES AND STORIES OF THESE DAYS ..

London: Published by William Heinemann, 1908.. Octavo, pp. [1-8] [1] 2-312, four inserted plates with illustrations by Alberto Martini, original pictorial black cloth, front panel stamped in red and white, spine panel stamped in red, Heinemann windmill device stamped in red on rear panel, bottom edge untrimmed. First edition. Collects thirteen stories. "Mixed collection, including the classic ghost story 'Thurnley Abbey,' also psychological suspense stories 'Railhead' and 'The Gyroscope,' the latter about a horrifying juggernaut which runs amok in a crowded auditorium. Superb lithographs by Alberto Martini." - Robert Knowlton. "The little-known Perceval Landon was capable of considerable suspense, terror, wit, and insight into Edwardian technology. The stories collected in RAW EDGES are a decidedly mixed bag (and not all of them supernatural. According to Jacques Barzun and Wendell H. Taylor in Catalogue of Crime (1974), 'there is much to admire, as well as much to disappoint.' The most often reprinted Landon tale is the superb 'Thurnley Abbey.'" - Tymn (ed), Horror Literature 3-138. "Although Landon published only one collection of short stories with supernatural content, RAW EDGES (1908), the unusual quality of one particular story makes it worthy of note. This is the frequently anthologized tale, 'Thurnley Abbey,' which is ranked by some as one of the greatest ghost stories ever written. Landon's achievement is all the more impressive because of his use of well-worn subject matter. The tale's masterful development of atmosphere is a model of how even cliched material can be given a new lease of life in the hands of a skilled writer." - Wilson, Shadows in the Attic, p. 309. Landon's only book of fiction. "Thurnley Abbey" is "a Jamesian classic" and "Landon's only Jamesian tale." - Pardoe, The James Gang, p. 11. Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, p. 252. Bleiler (1978), p. 118. Not in Reginald (1979; 1992). Barzun and Taylor, A Catalogue of Crime 3435. Touch of wear to cloth at lower front spine ends, a bit of light staining to cloth, most to rear cover, free endpapers tanned, a very good copy. (#152966)

        A SCOUT'S STORY ..

London: Duckworth & Co., 1908.. Octavo, pp. [i-iv] v-ix [x] 1-294 + 32-page publisher's catalogue dated "July 1908" inserted at rear, three inserted plates, one signed Monsell, original pictorial pink cloth, front panel stamped in black, gray and white, spine panel stamped in black and gold, publisher's device stamped in black on rear panel, t.e.g. First edition. Boys' lost race adventure novel set in the Andes of Argentina where a band of avaricious cowboy adventurers seeking "the treasure of the lost race of the mummy men of the Rio Negro" find a secret city inhabited by an ancient race of giant Indians, "pagans who pray to Andes Aloro." The "Pagans" attack the Europeans who are looting their "Treasure of the Sun." They capture several members of the company and take them to their city to be sacrificed to the Sun people's gods. The Europeans massacre hundreds of the Indians and invade the city, much of which is destroyed by fire. Most of the gold, melted by the intense heat, flows into a deep lake near the temple. The adventurers escape and return to civilization where they make plans to return with machine guns and equipment needed to recover the gold. An honest man "never steals anything that he can't carry away." Among the most jingoistic, racist, and bloody-minded lost race stories. The later American edition (using the UK sheets) was attributed to "Owen Rhoscomyl," the bardic name of this once-popular English-born Welsh nationalist. Teitler 1030. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978) or Reginald (1979; 1992). Attractive bookplate of Louis Coues Page affixed to the front paste-down. Small dent in cloth near lower spine end, cloth just a bit dusty, but a bright, very good copy. (#151642)

Der sechzehnte Kongreß des Deutschen Schachbundes, e.V. zu Düsseldorf 1908. mit einem Verzeichnis der Mitglieder des Deutschen Schachbundes, e.V

Potsdam: A Stein's Verlagsbuchhandlung, 1908 178+[2 ad] pages with diagrams and tables. Royal octavo (0 1/2" x 6 1/2") bound in half black cloth and marbled boards. (Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 5288) First edition. The Master's section of the 16th DSB Kongress, Duesseldorf, despite the presence of Rudolf Spielmann, Georg Salwe, Jacques Mieses Mieses and a few other of note such as young Karel Trebal of Czechoslovakia, was much weaker that the Vienna and Prague which Marshall had just competed. Marshall rolled over the opposition, to score his sixth international tournament victory. The American scored 11 1/2 - 3 1/2 without a loss. Salwe, second, was a point and half behind, while Spielmann, third, was two points behind. Walter John clear fourth with a score of 9. Jacques Mieses had sole fifth with 8 1/2. Friedrich Köhnlein won the Hauptturnier A, Kurt Moll the Hauptturnier B. Marshall wrote in his unpublished notes that "Chess masters are notoriously superstitious," from the days of Zukertort and Steinitz to his time. He added that he had been "a little superstitious" ever since he had dinner one evening during the Dusseldorf tournament at a table with two Swedish women. After dinner one of the women gave Marshall a small silver pig. "Keep this," she said. "It'll bring you luck in your chess-but also illness to those you love." Marshall kept the pig-and finished 1 1/2 points ahead of second-place Salwe. He had won his first international since Nuremberg 1906, which was also a German Chess Union Congress, and now twice become "Champion of German." (But after his son Frankie fell ill, "I parted with the pig and my child recovered," he wrote.         MY AFRICAN JOURNEY

London Hodder and Stoughton 1908 - First edition. First and only issue. Illustrated profusely throughout. 8vo, publisher’s original bright red cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine and pictorially decorated in colours across the whole of the upper cover. xiii, 226, 16 ads. A very bright and handsome copy, the text with just a light bit of the inevitable foxing to which the title is prone, much less than is typically fencourntered . The cloth is especially fresh with just a bit of very minor age mellowing. SCARCE FIRST EDITION IN VERY PLEASING CONDITION, AND A VERY IMPORTANT WORK OF AFRICANA FROM WINSTON CHURCHILL’S EARLY ADVENTUROUS YEARS. Winston Churchill is, of course, chiefly known for his position as England’s Prime Minister during World War II and his political writings, but in his earlier days his love for traveling and big game hunting had the greatest command of his pen. He offers this book, "a continuous narrative of the lighter side of what was to me a very delightful and inspiring journey," in hopes that the British with recently-acquired estates in Africa would have their interest piqued and make the most of what Africa had to offer. It is the companion volume to his earlier African writings, THE STORY OF THE MALAKAND FIELD FORCE, THE RIVER WAR, and LONDON TO LADYSMITH. Such bright copies of this book are especially elusive because the pictorial images on the front cover were nearly always effected by rubbing. Another delightful installment of Churchill’s African adventures. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A large vintage portrait photograph of Australian-born composer Percy Grainger, signed by him with a warm inscription and musical sentiment to American composer and electronic music pioneer Raymond Scott (born Harry Warnow, 1908-1994)

      - The inscription reads in full: 'To dear Harry, in warm admiration of his true genius, thanking him for his glorious first performance of "The Lost Lady", & in happy memory of one of the few electric concerts of my life (June 2). His friend, Percy, June 1938'. The musical sentiment that follows comprises the first three bars of 'The Lost Lady Found', the sixth movement of Grainger's 'Lincolnshire Posy', a collection of folk songs arranged for concert band. Percy Grainger (1882-1961) is well-known for his work in collecting folk music and experimentation with early electronic instruments; the inscription is singularly apposite. The gelatin silver photograph (an impressive 330 x 250 mm) is signed and dated by the photographer Frederick Morse ('Morse 1937', written in ink on the bottom right-hand corner of the image). 'After World War 1, Frederick Morse, a young professional photographer, built a house next door to Percy and Rose Grainger in White Plains, New York. He produced many of Grainger's promotional photographs during the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s as well as informally documenting the Grainger household and Percy's eclectic pursuits. Their association became close, with Morse periodically working as Percy's secretary and as an occasional wrestling partner' (Brian Allison, 'Grainger Photographs', University of Melbourne Library Journal, 2000). The photograph has a little silvering-out to the lower right-hand portion, and its edges are a little darkened with a few trifling chips; overall it is in excellent condition.         RAW EDGES: STUDIES AND STORIES OF THESE DAYS ...

London: Published by William Heinemann,. 1908. original pictorial black cloth, front panel stamped in red and white, spine panel stamped in red, bottom edge untrimmed.. Touch of wear to cloth at spine ends, a bit of loss to white enamel. rule on front cover, free endpapers tanned, a very good copy.. (#148794).

        SARDONICS: SIXTEEN SKETCHES ...

New York: Metropolitan Syndicate, Inc.,. [1908]. original light green cloth, lettered in red on front and spine panels.. Spine panel darkened, stain on lower spine, else a very good copy.. (#150825). First edition. The rare first issue with integral title leaf bearing the "Metropolitan Syndicate" imprint and bound in non-pictorial green cloth. SARDONICS is the first of Lyon's two books, both collecting some of his short fiction. Lyon's untimely death at age 33 cut short a promising literary career. His fiction was of high caliber and has been favorably compared with that of Stephen Crane and Ambrose Bierce. "The 31 tales and sketches in [SARDONICS and GRAPHICS] can be properly compared with the work of Crane and Bierce for vivid, highly characterized and purposeful narrative. 'The Second Motive' in SARDONICS and 'Revenge' in GRAPHICS are psychological murder tragedies at the two extremes of the social scale. Lyon, like Crane and Norris, died before his talents had fully matured and, unfortunately, when his work had only begun to appear in McCLURE'S MAGAZINE and to attract special attention." - Bennett, A Practical Guide to American Book Collecting, p. 204. Most of the stories in SARDONICS are mystery or detective shorts, some with fantastic elements. "Into the Fourth Dimension" concerns the fate of the inventor of a device to project people into other dimensions who is poisoned in a Chinese restaurant, kills his tormentor, and escapes into another dimension with disastrous results. Smith, American Fiction, 1901-1925 L-615. Not in Hubin (1994).
