Theodore Roosevelt Signed Letter To Gutzon Borglum.

Signed letter from President Theodore Roosevelt to Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor of Mount Rushmore on White House letterhead dated February 17, 1908. It reads, "My dear Borglum, The head of Lincoln grows upon me more and more. I think it one of the finest things I have seen. I especially like it when seen from the right front. Theodore Roosevelt." Long before beginning his work on Mount Rushmore, Borglum carved a massive marble bust of Abraham Lincoln in 1908 that was exhibited in Theodore Roosevelt's White House. Robert Todd Lincoln praised it as perhaps the greatest likeness of his father he had ever seen, and the bust was donated to the Congress later that year. Over a decade later, when designing Mount Rushmore in the 1920s, Borglum placed President Roosevelt next to Lincoln. Double matted and framed with a photograph of Borglum. The entire piece measures 13.5 inches by 21.5 inches.

Extract From a Despatch From the Government of India to the Secretary of State for India in Council, Dated September 21, 1899, Relating to British Policy in Persia.

London, Harrison & Sons, 1908. - Folio. 11, (1) pp. Sewn. Contains an extensive discussion of the de jure and de facto status of navigation in the Arabian Gulf: legally, the "western and southern coasts are partially owned and partially claimed by Turkey, or are in the occupation of Arab tribes, who have entered into Treaty relationships of varying character, constituting a sort of veiled Protectorate with Great Britain. The islands in the Gulf are owned either by Persia or by Arab Chiefs (in the case of Bahrein under British protection) [.] The de facto position upon the waters and on the shores of the [.] Gulf refelcts a more positive British predominance than the preceding paragraph might indicate. In the early years of the [19th] century the Slave Trade was rapant in the Gulf [.] This conflict [.] resulted in the establishment of Treaty relations with the great majority of the Arab Chiefs, under which they bound themselves to observe perpetual peace, and to refer all disputes to the British Resident at Bushire [.]". - Slight duststaining to cover, but well preserved.

      - Paris, Armand Colin, 1908. Small 8vo. Contemporary cloth-backed marbled boards by the Besançon Institute of the Deaf-Mute; pp. viii, 298, lithographic folding map at the end, light toning, mainly marginal, a very good copy; provenance: contemporary stamps of a Besançon military club (Rà union des Officiers). Very rare first edition of this French assessment of the impact of the Anglo-Russian treatise of 1907, which regulated the spheres of influence over Afghanistan and Persia, with Britain controlling the entrance to the Persian Gulf. When the Great Game was drawing to a close, the French physician, political analyst and journalist Rouire examines the growth of influence of the British Empire in the Gulf, Bahrain, Kuwait and in Southern Arabia, before dealing with the geopolitics of Afghanistan, Tibet, and Persia, which was half under Russian and half under British influence, Rouire concludes the volume with an analysis of the impact of the treatise on both Muscat and Kuwait. - The book was never translated into English; however, in 1924 a Russian translation was published. Not in COPAC. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Olaf Gulbransson: Führer durch München während der Ausstellung II (Originalzeichnung)

1908 - Tusche und Bleistift auf Papier. 51 x 36,5 cm. Rechts unten signiert. (Nähere Berichte folgen.)“ Provenienz: Nachlass Olaf Gulbransson [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Biedermeier-Wünsche... Fünfzig Kleinfolio-Tafeln in Licht-u. Farbendruck nebst illustriertem Text

Stuttgart: Julius Hoffmann, 1908. First Limited Edition. Cloth folder. Near Fine. No. 165 of 400 copies. Oblong, 26.5 by 33.5 cm. Booklet, running 25 pages, and 50 separate or loose plates, each with a number of images of Biedermeier cards, especially those with movable parts, and other ephemera from that period. One plate with color chromolithographic images; otherwise, the plates are in black and white. This is the indispensable and go-to source still for Biedermeier cards. Biedermeier relates to a period of general stability in Europe between Napoleon's defeat in 1815 and the Revolution of 1848 and specifically pertains to the Teutonic world (the German-speaking areas) where the upper bourgeois was culturally ascendant and superceding Royal and aristocratic patronage as the engine of high cultural development. The Biedermeier cards were a rage, with their intricate, clever mechanisms and pretty hand-colored imagery. Light wear to the outer folio folder. Generally clean.
