        By Salt Marshes

Ipswich, MA: Privately Printed, 1908. RARE FIRST EDITION OF DOW'S MASTERPIECE, ONE OF THE MOST CELEBRATED EXAMPLES OF COLOR WOODBLOCK ILLUSTRATIONS. ONE OF ONLY 200 COPIES PRINTED. AN EXCEPTIONALLY FINE COPY IN THE ORIGINAL BOX. "By Salt Marshes is Arthur Wesley Dow's tribute to the old North Shore town of Ipswich, where he was born and spent most of his life, and to his boyhood friend, Everett Stanley Hubbard. It is a collaboration somewhat in the spirit of Meteyard, Carman and Hovey in their Vagabondia books, though Hubbard was undoubtedly a lesser poet and Dow a greater artist. [It] is his masterpiece, and it is evident from the numerous sketches and proofs in the Ipswich Historical Society and the Society for Preservation of New England Antiquities - some dating back as far as 1895 - that it was a labor of love. Infinite care and craftsmanship were expended on every detail."Dow displayed a complete mastery of the color woodblock technique, "using as many as four or five different blocks, accurately registered, thinly inked to show the grain of the wood, and printed in subtle gradations of tone to achieve a luminosity that effectively evokes the quality of the light on the marshes" (Finlay, Artists of the Book in Boston, 1890-1910).Complete with seven color woodcut illustrations plus title, colophon, endpaper, and head- and tailpiece vignettes.Ipswich, Massachusetts: Privately printed, 1908. Thin small octavo, original brown linen-backed boards with woodcut cover title and vignette; original box; all housed in custom box.EXCEEDINGLY RARE IN THE ORIGINAL BOX AND IN SUCH FINE CONDITION. Fine.

Sardonics: Sixteen Sketches

New York: Metropolitan Syndicate, Inc, [1908]. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. First issue with integral title leaf, imprint as above. Author's first book. Rare. Inscriptions on the front free endpaper: "Robert W. Jones, / Jan. 1. 1909" and just below it in a different hand: "Presented by the Author, / who did not sign his name herein--durn him". A collection of short stories which "deal with grim incidents of life in the big city. In one story a drunken hotel waiter beats his wife to death with a chair, ... in another an Italian pickle dealer stabs a saloon keeper who will not pay his twelve dollars, and yet another story tells how a cab driver took a drunken man into his cab and after driving to a secluded section stabbed him in a fight that followed an attempt to rob .... Each story is one incident, a crisis, told in a style both unusual and interesting. Lyon's style is clear, effective, and unaffected" (unidentified newspaper review, pasted in). Bound in the original green cloth titled in red on spine and front cover. A few chips to cloth at foot of spine, minor sunning to spine, small stain to spine, and light wear to corners, otherwise a bright, attractive copy. Clipping from newspaper review of the book pasted to the rear pastedown with offsetting to endpapers. 225 pages. LIT/30119.

Hand Illustrated Photo Album, Possibly the Work of Margaret Tarrant, with Illustrations after Caldecott, Palmer Cox's Brownies and More.

[Outsider Books][Children's Picture Book Illustration] Manuscript Illustrated Photo Album. N. P. : (circa early 20th century). 11 ½” x 8 ½”. Late 19th century full brown morocco photo album with clasp, a. E. G. 28 pages (including free endpapers) on thick card stock, 26 of which contain at least 2 illustrations in pencil, pen and ink. Album lightly worn, internally near fine, lacking photos and a few small portions of drawings perished. A hand-illustrated photo album with tantalizing clues that its creator was children's book author and illustrator Margaret Tarrant. The book begins with two elven creatures similar to Cox's Brownies as well as a winged pixie flying a cushioned chariot pulled by butterflies. The next several pages depict scenes from Caldecott's The Three Jovial Huntsmen. What follows are dozens of scenes of anthropomorphic frogs, mice, bees, snails, ants and other creatures all in extraordinary detail. An owl sits fiddling in a tree while watching two gentlemanly grasshoppers shake hands; a stately frog addresses his minions before battle; a grasshopper band performs for dancing insects. The initials “MT” and “Ms T” appear at the very beginning and very end of the book, respectively. Additionally the name “Mollie Tarrant” is written underneath one of the window mounts. Tarrant was known for her incessant sketching and drawingand illustrated dozens of children's books beginning in 1908. Tarrant's work or not, a mesmerizing album exuding joy on every page. ?       Hellerau, (1908). - 25,5 x 21,5 cm. 229 Seiten (überwiegend fotogr. Tafeln). Orig.-Halbleinenband. Auflage).         Hans Teichmueller Biographical Sketch Addresses and Letters to his family [Prepared] by his loving wife and daughters

Austin: Von Boeckmann-Jones, 1908. FIRST EDITION. Very good antiquarian condition. Small folio. Bound in original publisher's brown boards, upper cover decorated with a large vignette of acorns and oak leaves (signed "M.T."), recent brown morocco spine. Excellent, attractive copy. EARLY TEXAS JURISPRUDENCE AS PRACTICED BY ONE OF THE ORIGINAL GERMAN IMMIGRANTS. "Hans Teichmueller (1837-1901), judge and lawyer, was born in Braunschweig (Brunswick), Germany, on March 7, 1837, the third son of an army officer. At the age of fourteen, after several years of private training, he attended a boarding school where he had intended to study theology. He later gave up this idea to become a cabin boy on a steamer to New York. While in New York he stayed with a German lawyer who tried to persuade him to remain and study law. Not long afterwards Teichmueller returned to Germany and entered the gymnasium of Blankenburg in the Harz Mountains. The sudden death of his father a few years later made it impossible for Teichmueller to secure a university education, so he came to Texas to join his cousin, Arthur Meerscheidt, who lived on a farm in Fayette County. On June 16, 1858, Teichmueller married Augusta Kellner, whose father, a modern-language teacher, had taught him English when he first arrived in Fayette County. The Teichmuellers had five children. For a few months they farmed near Highhill in Fayette County, before moving to New Ulm, where Teichmueller studied law and taught school. His duties as a teacher exempted him from military service, but he served for about half a year as secretary of a militia at Brenham. Before the end of the Civil War he moved to La Grange, Fayette County, to begin his law practice. He passed his bar examination on May 16, 1866, and then entered the law firm of L. Lindsey and B. D. Shropshire. He served as county judge in 1869-1870 to fill the unexpired term of Reinhardt Hillebrandt. After several law partnerships he formed one with Meerscheidt and a man named Dunn, which terminated with Teichmueller's election to the judgeship of the Twenty-second Judicial District in 1884. Judge Teichmueller, a Democrat, read two papers before the Bar Association of Texas (later the State Bar of Texas) and wrote several articles on such subjects as trusts, economic freedom, expansion of the constitution, American jurisprudence, and bankruptcy; he intended to write a book on the homestead law. He died at La Grange on February 17, 1901" (SOURCE: Rudolph L. Biesele, Handbook of Texas). REFERENCES: Frank Lotto, Fayette County: Her History and Her People (Schulenburg, Texas: Sticker Steam Press, 1902; rpt., Austin: University of Texas Press, 1981).         SARDONICS: SIXTEEN SKETCHES ..

New York: Metropolitan Syndicate, Inc., [1908].. Octavo, pp. [1-8] [1-2] 3-225 [226-228: blank] [note: last leaf is a blank], original light green cloth, lettered in red on front and spine panels. First edition. The rare first issue with integral title leaf bearing the "Metropolitan Syndicate" imprint and bound in non-pictorial green cloth. SARDONICS is the first of Lyon's two books, both collecting some of his short fiction. Lyon's untimely death at age 33 cut short a promising literary career. His fiction was of high caliber and has been favorably compared with that of Stephen Crane and Ambrose Bierce. "The 31 tales and sketches in [SARDONICS and GRAPHICS] can be properly compared with the work of Crane and Bierce for vivid, highly characterized and purposeful narrative. 'The Second Motive' in SARDONICS and 'Revenge' in GRAPHICS are psychological murder tragedies at the two extremes of the social scale. Lyon, like Crane and Norris, died before his talents had fully matured and, unfortunately, when his work had only begun to appear in McCLURE'S MAGAZINE and to attract special attention." - Bennett, A Practical Guide to American Book Collecting, p. 204. Most of the stories in SARDONICS are mystery or detective shorts, some with fantastic elements. "Into the Fourth Dimension" concerns the fate of the inventor of a device to project people into other dimensions who is poisoned in a Chinese restaurant, kills his tormentor, and escapes into another dimension with disastrous results. Smith, American Fiction, 1901-1925 L-615. Not in Hubin (1994). Spine panel darkened, stain on lower spine, else a very good copy. (#150825)

The Rock Tombs of El Amarna; Archaeological Survey of Egypt edited by F. Ll. Griffith: Thirteenth-Eighteenth Memoir: Parts I....[through] Part VI

London: Archaeological Survey of Egypt / Egypt Exploration Fund, 1908. First Edition. Cloth over boards. Near Fine. Norman de Garis Davies. Folios (12 1/2" x 10 3/8"), VI volumes [of VIII]; grey paper covered boards with tan cloth spine; numerous engraved plates of scale plans, line drawings, and B&W photos: Part I--The Tomb of Meryra (56pp. & 42 plates); Part II.--The Tombs of Panehesy and Meryra II (1-48pp. & 47 plates); Part III.--The Tombs of Huya and Ahmes (1-41pp. & 39 plates); Part IV.--Tombs of Penthu, Mahu, and Others (1-36pp. & 45 plates); Part V.--Smaller Tombs and Boundary Stelae (1-37pp. & 44 plates); Part VI.--Tombs of Parennefer, Tutu, and Ay (1-44pp. & 44 plates). 16 lbs. 4 oz. Rare, magnificently and accurately illustrated, indispensible original edition with detailed and exceptionally clean plates of the earliest excavations by Norman de Garis Davies of El Amarna--the city built in the desert by the controversial monotheistic Pharaoh Akhenaten near the end of the 18th Dynasty. Because of the widespread destruction of records and artifacts relating to the Pharaoh Akhenaten, his beautiful wife Queen Nefertiti, and his son Tutankhamon--caused by centuries of erosion, robbers, and recently by religiously-inspired vandals at a museum directly across the Nile from Amarna, this series of excellently executed records has even greater importance now than when it was initially published. Norman de Garis Davies, (1865-1941) was a wealthy Englishman and former Unitarian minister who gave up being a pastor for his love of archaeology and associated artistic renderings. Davies was initially active at Tell el Amarna from 1903 to 1907. There, he worked various non-royal and royal grave groups a few miles from the Central City, as well as the royal necropolis of the royal grave (no. 26) and graves no. 27-30. These graves were located in the northern limestone mountains nearly 100-feet up on the steep slope of the desert mountain edge. In his capacity of Field Director / Survey Project of the Archaeological Survey, Davies published layouts of the graves of officials at Tell el-Amarna in the Archeological Survey in 6 "Memoirs" from 1903 to 1908, which we offer here. Between 1905 and 1907, Davies also worked for George Andrew Reisner in Geza and James Henry Breasted in Nubia. In 1906, Norman became engaged to Anna (nick-named "Nina") Macpherson Cummingson, and they married on October 8th, 1907. She is noted for the quality of her architectural drawings and recreations. In 1912, Norman de Garis Davies was awarded the Leibniz Medal of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. The husband-&-wife archaeological-and-artistic studies of ancient Egypt continued throughout their lives. Among their subsequent famous publications, we note Nina's drawings for the MMA from the grave of Djehuty kt 45 (1908). When Egyptologist Alan H. Gardiner saw Nina's work, he became so impressed that he agreed in 1909 to buy as many pictures of her work as he could afford. Thereafter, considerable acclaim attended their Thebes Tomb Series (TTS) in five editions of the "Memoirs" of the EDF from 1915-1933. In addition, for the 1926-27 archaeological excavation season, Norman and Nina received permission from the MMA to help the Egypt Exploration Society in Tell el-Amarna. Their work followed excavations begun by Henri Frankfort in November 1926. Charles K. Wilkinson, who had belonged since 1920 to the graphic department of the Metropolitan Museum, made a series of preliminary drawings, while Norman and Nina made color copies. This work resulted in the book: The Mural Painting of el-'Amarna, which Henri Frankfort issued in 1929 and to which Norman contributed a chapter. Nina also published color copies of the frescoes in the northern palace, and together they were represented by other drawings. Because of thievery, the frescoes were removed later and the fragments brought to the museum in Cairo. Her drawings became an important source for reconstructing the entirety. Norman De Garis Davies died in his sleep of heart failure at Oxford on 4 November 1941. Continuing to work on their unfinished projects throughout the Second World War, Nina prepared Norman's work on the Temple of Hibis. She put together the material and let the drawings photographed. Finally, she sent everything to the Metropolitan Museum. Unfortunately, in their publication of 1953, her earlier work found no mention: see, Part III, The Decoration. Metropolitan Museum of Art. New York. 1953. Nina & Norman's Egyptian collection was bequeathed to the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, and his books to the University College, London. His written documents went to the Griffith Institute. According to Martin Fitzenreiter: Contemporary Art, 2002: "The works by this artist-Egyptologist belong without question to the best that can be achieved by the art of copyists. The accuracy of the strokes, especially the delicacy of color rendering their work of many years of empathy with the nature and art of ancient Egyptian paintings are still unmatched by any technical recording method of the "soul" to mention. " Pharaoh Akhenaten's almost 20-year-long controversial reign appears in Egyptian history as a "cultural revolution" in theology and art. Typically, the pharoah was represented stylistically with an elongated face with feminized features: full lips, a narrow waist, wide hips, a bulbous belly and thighs, and developing breasts. A few statues also show him sexless. The pharaoh and his wife were also depicted with peculiarly long thin fingers and toes. The king was often accompanied by his family as a tender father and lover of his wife Nefertiti whom he embraced. Other scenes depicted him with his children, six princesses, with whom he played. The royal figures of Akhenaten and his wife were often slightly clothed, sometimes naked. A central reference point of Akhenaten's new religion was the light, represented by the sun. In most pictures, one finds representations of the Aten, the sun god, depicted as a stylized sun disk, whose rays flow in life-giving hands. Nefertiti and various high officials are also shown receiving the presence of the Aten. As high priest and embodiment of the Aten, Akhenaten also wrote a solar hymn, which he dedicated in the grave of Eje (Ay). His sun hymn was identified by the French Egyptologist Urbain Bouriant by closely comparing the Davies' engravings with the archaeology (published 1884; rev. 1908). In addition, five shorter hymns to Aton were identified in the graves of Meryre I, Tutu, Mahu, Ipi (Apy) and No. 23. Seymour de Ricci (1881-1942) was a bibliographer and historian--often of French subjects--who collaborated with Davies' on the text of The Rock Tombs of El-Amarna: The tomb of Meyra (1905) and its continuation with the Tombs of Parennefer, Tutu, and Ay (1908).         Notes of a Botanist on the Amazon & Andes

London: Macmillan and Co., Limited,, 1908. being records of travel on the Amazon and its tributaries, the Trombetas, Rio Negro, Uaupés, Casiquiari, Pacimoni, Huallaga, and Pastasa; as also to the cataracts of the Orinoco, along the eastern side of the Andes of Peru and Ecuador, and the shores of the Pacific, during the years 1849–1864. Edited and condensed, with a biographical introduction, portrait, seventy-one illustrations and seven maps. In two volumes. 2 volumes, octavo. Original green cloth, spines lettered in gilt, top edge gilt. Portrait frontispiece, 71 illustrations, 7 maps (the last folding). With the small ownership stamp of Roger Perry and a bookplate recording his donation to the Spruce memorial plaque installed at Coneysthorpe, Yorkshire in 1971. Roger Perry (1933–2016) was director of the Charles Darwin Research Station, Galapagos, from 1964 to 1970. Spines a little faded and worn at ends, browning to endpapers, still a very good copy. First edition. One of Wallace's later works was this edition of the botanical papers and diaries of his friend and co-Amazonian explorer Richard Spruce, who had died in 1894. "This work best reflects [Spruce's] gift for analysis, description, and narrative, along with his dry humour" (ODNB). Spruce had been sent to South America in 1849 by Hooker, Bentham, and other botanists; Bentham was to receive, name, and distribute the plants he sent home. Towards the end of the year Spruce travelled up the Amazon to Santarém, at the mouth of the Tapajos, where he met Wallace and the lepidopterist Henry Walter Bates. Spruce spent three years on the rivers Negro and Orinoco, entering Venezuela and discovering many plants new to science, including 200 species of fungi in the rain forest of the Uapes. His travels were interrupted in 1852 when he returned to the River Negro to assist Wallace, who had been struck down by malaria, and oversee his safe passage down river. After extensive travels, Spruce remained on the Pacific coast until 1864, when he lost his entire capital in the collapse of a Peruvian bank. He returned to England in 1867 after an absence of 18 years. The work stands as a landmark of ethnobotany. Among Spruce's discoveries were a number of plants with medicinal properties, including the datura and coca plants. (It was his samples of the latter, sent to Berlin, which helped Dr Nieman isolate the active principle of the alkaloid cocaine in 1858.) Spruce also made the first detailed reports of ayahuasca and yopo and the ceremonial usage of these hallucinogenic plants. (See Schultes & Hofmann, Plants of the Gods, for numerous references to Spruce.)

RAW EDGES: STUDIES AND STORIES OF THESE DAYS ..

London: Published by William Heinemann, 1908.. Octavo, pp. [1-8] [1] 2-312, four inserted plates with illustrations by Alberto Martini, original pictorial black cloth, front panel stamped in red and white, spine panel stamped in red, Heinemann windmill device stamped in red on rear panel, bottom edge untrimmed. First edition. Collects thirteen stories. "Mixed collection, including the classic ghost story 'Thurnley Abbey,' also psychological suspense stories 'Railhead' and 'The Gyroscope,' the latter about a horrifying juggernaut which runs amok in a crowded auditorium. Superb lithographs by Alberto Martini." - Robert Knowlton. "The little-known Perceval Landon was capable of considerable suspense, terror, wit, and insight into Edwardian technology. The stories collected in RAW EDGES are a decidedly mixed bag (and not all of them supernatural. According to Jacques Barzun and Wendell H. Taylor in Catalogue of Crime (1974), 'there is much to admire, as well as much to disappoint.' The most often reprinted Landon tale is the superb 'Thurnley Abbey.'" - Tymn (ed), Horror Literature 3-138. "Although Landon published only one collection of short stories with supernatural content, RAW EDGES (1908), the unusual quality of one particular story makes it worthy of note. This is the frequently anthologized tale, 'Thurnley Abbey,' which is ranked by some as one of the greatest ghost stories ever written. Landon's achievement is all the more impressive because of his use of well-worn subject matter. The tale's masterful development of atmosphere is a model of how even cliched material can be given a new lease of life in the hands of a skilled writer." - Wilson, Shadows in the Attic, p. 309. Landon's only book of fiction. "Thurnley Abbey" is "a Jamesian classic" and "Landon's only Jamesian tale." - Pardoe, The James Gang, p. 11. Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, p. 252. Bleiler (1978), p. 118. Not in Reginald (1979; 1992). Barzun and Taylor, A Catalogue of Crime 3435. Touch of wear to cloth at lower front spine ends, a bit of light staining to cloth, most to rear cover, free endpapers tanned, a very good copy. (#152966)

        My African Journey

London: Hodder and Stoughton,, 1908. With sixty-one illustrations from photographs by the author and Lieutenant-Colonel Gordon Wilson, and three maps. Octavo. Original red cloth, gilt-lettered spine, titles and pictorial decoration to front board in black, blue, and grey. Publisher's 16-page catalogue at end. Photographic frontispiece, 46 photographic plates, and 3 maps. Gift inscription to verso of front free endpaper. Spine slightly faded, a little foxing to contents; an excellent copy in unusually bright cloth. First edition, first impression. My African Journey was the first book to derive purely from Churchill's journalism, as distinct from his work as a war correspondent. Before embarking he signed an extremely lucrative contract for the publication of a series of articles in The Strand, and for further publication in book form. What Churchill was offered is impressive testimony to his perceived drawing power, at £750 for five contributions he was receiving "more than Kipling, whom The Strand were paying £90 for his short stories; more than W. W. Jacobs, whose rate at the time was £110 for a story" (Pound, The Strand Magazine, 1891-1950). "The result bubbles with Churchill's irrepressible interest in everything new, whether it was the thrill of hunting rhino, the dangers of sleeping sickness, or the engagingly extempore justice of the District Officers" (Woods, Artillery of Words: The Writings of Sir Winston Churchill, 1992, p. 81).
