Olaf Gulbransson: Führer durch München während der Ausstellung II (Originalzeichnung)

1908 - Tusche und Bleistift auf Papier. 51 x 36,5 cm. Rechts unten signiert. Fünfzig Kleinfolio-Tafeln in Licht-u. Farbendruck nebst illustriertem Text

Stuttgart: Julius Hoffmann, 1908. First Limited Edition. Cloth folder. Near Fine. No. 165 of 400 copies. Oblong, 26.5 by 33.5 cm. Booklet, running 25 pages, and 50 separate or loose plates, each with a number of images of Biedermeier cards, especially those with movable parts, and other ephemera from that period. One plate with color chromolithographic images; otherwise, the plates are in black and white. This is the indispensable and go-to source still for Biedermeier cards. Biedermeier relates to a period of general stability in Europe between Napoleon's defeat in 1815 and the Revolution of 1848 and specifically pertains to the Teutonic world (the German-speaking areas) where the upper bourgeois was culturally ascendant and superceding Royal and aristocratic patronage as the engine of high cultural development. The Biedermeier cards were a rage, with their intricate, clever mechanisms and pretty hand-colored imagery. Light wear to the outer folio folder. Generally clean.

        The Unmasking of Robert-Houdin.

The Publishers Printing Co, New York 1908 - First edition. Octavo, original cloth, frontispiece of Houdini. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To F.L.C. Wehrenberg Jr. with compliments of the author. Harry Houdini 4/27/16 Baltimore MD." In near fine condition with some light rubbing and wear. "Harry Houdini was a unique figure in the history of entertainment. a hero of legend and folklore." Following the death of his mother in 1913, Houdini began to investigate spiritualism and "soon became an all-out crusader against it. Early in 1924 he began lecturing throughout the United States on fraudulent mediums. In city after city he attended seances in disguise, exposing frauds on the spot and sometimes securing their arrest, aided by his personal squad of detectives. The raids brought him huge publicity as well as a million dollars in lawsuits." At his death in 1927, "he was buried in a brass replica of the iron casket, his head pillowed on a bundle of his mother's letters to him" (ANB). The legendary magician and illusionist Harry Houdini turns a critical eye to the astonishing claims of those in his own profession in his work Miracle Mongers and Their Methods. Using personal research and observations, Houdini reveals the cunning techniques employed by fire-eaters, sword swallowers, and other masters of deception to mystify and amaze audiences around the world.         Italy c.1908 Ethnic farmers sights views set of 100 stereoviews Underwood

1908 - Italy Issued c.1890-1900 by Underwood & Underwood. Nice group/lot/set of 100 cards, which apparently have been together as a group for a very long time. Housed within the bottom half of what is likely the original antique cloth bound book-shaped box with gilt ruled & lettered spines (lacks top-fitting box cover). Base of box snugly contains the 100 antique stereo view cards relating to Italy. Note- 1 of the cards is on a cream mount as opposed to grey, yet seems to fit in as if issued thus. All cards have titles and dates below the right half of the view. these mostly seem to range from 1897-1908. The backs all display titles in 6 diff. languages, including Russian, German, French & Italian. A most appealing set of early -20th century tourist, architectural monuments, sights, ethnographic and cultural views, capturing natives, buildings, artwork & statues and landscapes both urban and natural. The photographer was obviously sensitive to photographic composition and knew how to take stereoviews. The views are interesting on several levels, well composed, frequently fascinating in the details. They have successfully captured a spectacular visual snapshot of the country in a manner unique to stereography- namely, all the views may be enjoyed in delightful 3-D visual format. Every scene literally comes to life when the card is inserted into a simply standard hand-held stereoscope viewer (we could include a nice 100 year old wooden one with this set if you'd like for a mere $50- just ask). Each scene pops alive and it feels like you are there witnessing it at that moment. Great stuff, way better than viewing anything old digitally on your desktop or phone. A very scarce, possibly complete and overall fairly well preserved set which undoubtedly had a small production and limited distribution for a select wealthy audience at the time (buying 100 stereocards at a time was quite expensive at this time). Box measures c. 8' W x 6" H. Cards 7" W x 3 3/8" H. Set price represents less than $10/ card. [A6714] A picture is worth a thousand words.         By Salt Marshes

Privately Printed, Ipswich, MA 1908 - RARE FIRST EDITION OF DOW'S MASTERPIECE, ONE OF THE MOST CELEBRATED EXAMPLES OF COLOR WOODBLOCK ILLUSTRATIONS. ONE OF ONLY 200 COPIES PRINTED. AN EXCEPTIONALLY FINE COPY IN THE ORIGINAL BOX. "By Salt Marshes is Arthur Wesley Dow's tribute to the old North Shore town of Ipswich, where he was born and spent most of his life, and to his boyhood friend, Everett Stanley Hubbard. It is a collaboration somewhat in the spirit of Meteyard, Carman and Hovey in their Vagabondia books, though Hubbard was undoubtedly a lesser poet and Dow a greater artist. [It] is his masterpiece, and it is evident from the numerous sketches and proofs in the Ipswich Historical Society and the Society for Preservation of New England Antiquities - some dating back as far as 1895 - that it was a labor of love. Infinite care and craftsmanship were expended on every detail." Dow displayed a complete mastery of the color woodblock technique, "using as many as four or five different blocks, accurately registered, thinly inked to show the grain of the wood, and printed in subtle gradations of tone to achieve a luminosity that effectively evokes the quality of the light on the marshes" (Finlay, Artists of the Book in Boston, 1890-1910). Complete with seven color woodcut illustrations plus title, colophon, endpaper, and head- and tailpiece vignettes. Ipswich, Massachusetts: Privately printed, 1908. Thin small octavo, original brown linen-backed boards with woodcut cover title and vignette; original box; all housed in custom box. EXCEEDINGLY RARE IN THE ORIGINAL BOX AND IN SUCH FINE CONDITION.
