Arnhem, Coers & Roest - G.J. Thieme, (1908). Folio (370 x 290mm). pp. (16), 172, (18), with 45 plates of which 34 beautifully handcoloured, many of the plates with coat of arms of the Royal Family in gold and silver, many handcoloured figures in the text, numerous richly ornamented handcoloured text borders, painted partly in gold and silver showing falcons, initials painted in red. Original extensively gilt pictorial full cloth. The rarest Dutch book on falconry. Only a few copies were printed for the Royal Family and Members of the Royal Loo Hunting Club. Together with Schlegel and Vester van Wulverhorst's 'Traité de Fauconnerie', the most impressive work published in the Netherlands on Falconry. Printed for private circulation only (as stated on the title page), this sumptuously produced work with the ornaments heightened in silver and gold is virtually unknown and not cited by bibliographies. The present copy has a written dedication of the author Van Es to F.M.L. van Geen, the Chamberlain and Private Secretary to the Queen (Wilhelmina van Oranje-Nasau, Queen from 1890-1948). The first 54 pages describe the life of Prince Alexander of the Netherlands, who died at the early age of 29, and who was the president of the Royal Loo Hunting Club, and a keen hunter. The majority of the attractive handcoloured plates and figures show falcons, hunting scenes and hawking attributes. The book has chapters on falconry in France, Germany, England and the Netherlands as well as a large chapter on the Monarchs of Oranje-Nassau and falconry. A list is given of the members of the Royal hawking club. The list consists of 31 Dutch members of which the majority is nobility as well as members of the Dutch Royal Family and 25 non residing members. The second volume of this publication seems to be less rare and treats military matter. An uncut and very well preserved copy. There is a copy in the Royal Library in The Hague from the famous falconry collection of A. Swaen.

The Tercentenary of Milton's Birth: Inaugural Meeting at the Theatre Burlington Gardens Tuesday, December 8, 1908 (The Eve of the Tercentenary). Lines by Mr. George Meredith, O.M., Written in Honour of the Occasion

The British Academy [London]: The British Academy, [1908]. Ephemera. Good. Ephemera. One of the rarest Meredith items, appearing the year before he died. First edition of a four page leaflet, an offprint from the Proceedings of the British Academy, with title on first page and two page poem. Small tear, browned, folds, a good copy only.In her detailed catalogue of the Altschul collection of Meredith (now at Yale), Bertha Coolidge states that "Professor Gollancz had a dozen copies printed off on vellum for Meredith and his friends." Only three copies printed on vellum can be located (Columbia, Yale, the Mark Samuels Lasner collection), and this appears to be the only one printed on paper - possibly a proof, considering the poor state of preservation.LIT/120712.

THE WAR IN THE AIR "is a remarkable rarity in being a future war novel which uses the viewpoint of ordinary people and deals primarily with the effects of aerial warfare on those ordinary people ... the shape of Wells's argument brings him to a conclusion very different from that characteristic of the future war novels written before 1914: civilization is virtually obliterated, and the Scientific Age is brought to an end." - Stableford, Scientific Romance in Britain 1890-1950, p. 72.         [Manuscript]: Memorandum on the Treaty Rights of the Jews of Roumania

London: [no publisher]. 1908. Typescript manuscript. 16pp. String-tied maroon crocodile textured wrappers with hand-titled paper label. Numerous tears and moderate loss to the wraps but with only light toning to the interior pages except for last page which has some creasing, overall very good. This memorandum was prepared by the London Committee of Deputies of Jews, a group formed in the mid-18th Century to safeguard the interests of the Jewish community, and given to Sir Edward Grey, the longest tenured British Foreign Secretary. The memorandum outlines various violations by the Romanian government to the Convention of Paris (1858) and the Treaty of Berlin (1878). It was likely written in reaction to the previous year's Romanian peasants' revolt in which over 10,000 people were killed and the origin of which was falsely blamed on the Jews. A notable document of European prewar Jewish solidarity and reaction to anti-Semitism. .

- 1908. Paul Benedikt Sarasin wurde am 11. Dezember 1856 in Basel geboren.

Sempre tuo?. Ben conservata.

Ca 125 words. Folded for mailing, else very good, with envelope. A somewhat dispirited and loving letter from Clemens to his youngest daughter, Jean (1880 - 1909), then at Eastern Point in Gloucester, Mass, during one of the extended separations from her family due to her need for special care for her epilepsy: "I am disappointed, distressed, & low-spirited, for that dream of yours & mine has come to nothing. That house turns out to be a poor trifling thing, like the rest of the ancient farm houses in this region, it has no room in it ... Miss Lyon thinks she told me all about it earlier, but I suppose it went out of my worn-out head, as everything does. I am so sorry. I wish I could situate you exactly to your liking, dear child, how gladly I would do it. And I wish I could take your malady & rid you of it for always. I wish your mother were here; she could help us ... I love you dear, dear, dearly, & I am so sorry, so sorry. What can I do? Father."
