Pacific Buffet, Pacific Building, San Francisco 1908 - 139, [1], [12] pp.; 7.25 x 5 inches, original yellow pictorial wrappers. Unpaginated section at rear headed "Some New-Up-To-Now Seductive American Cocktails." An expanded edition of the work first published in 1891 as "Cocktail Boothby's American Bartender." In his introduction to this 1908 edition the author states that his original "American Bartender" was published in 1890 and "Three editions, numbering over 50,000 copies were sold previous to the San Francisco fire, which destroyed the plates and lithographs, together with the stock on hand, necessitating the publication of a new manual . . ." These statements may contain some inaccuracies as the rarity of that earlier publication seems to prove. OCLC/Worldcat record only 3 copies of the 1891 edition and no other editions before this one of 1908. A classic drinks manual. Scarce. Bitting p. 49 (1891 edition); Noling p. 517. Text water (or alcohol?) stained from title-page on in diminishing degrees until about page 60, last few pages with pencil check-marks to margins.         The Story of the Noble Opal

Brisbane, Flavelle, Roberts and Sankey, 1908. Small octavo, 114, [2] (blank, colophon), [2] (a tipped-in leaf, being an advertisement for 'Queensland, the Queen of the Colonies', verso blank) pages. Original olive-green cloth lettered in gilt on the spine ('Noble Opal' and the author's surname) and front cover (the full title); cloth lightly rubbed at the extremities; endpapers a little foxed and offset, with two small (offset) tapemarks to both flyleaves; essentially a fine copy. Flavelle's Gem Series Number 1. Sydney Skertchly (1850-1926) arrived in Brisbane in 1891 after a successful career as a geologist in places as varied as the Fenland and East Anglia, Egypt, California, Burma and China. In 1895-97 he was assistant government geologist in the Geological Survey of Queensland; he was President of the Royal Society of Queensland in 1898, and a founder and first president of the Field Naturalists' Club in 1906. The author's end-note to the reader states that the publishers 'asked me to write a series of little books on gemstones, and gave me an entirely free hand. As this, the first of them shows, they will not be mere gatherings from other harvests, but original works embodying the results of my own experience'. An early, rare and important work on the subject (and we know of no other volumes in the Flavelle's Gem Series). We currently have for sale two variant copies of this item, sourced from a significant collection on the subject. The other version does not contain the tipped-in advertising leaf, while this version is printed on untextured (and better-quality) paper, resulting in a noticeably thinner volume (11 mm as distinct from 14 mm).

The Story of the Noble Opal. Flavelle's Gem Series, No 1

Brisbane: Flavelle, Roberts and Sankey Ltd, 1908. 165 x 105 mm, 114 pages, index. Preliminary pages, including the title page, foxed. From page 5 to page 111 there is no foxing. An excellent, tightly-bound copy of this rare book, with a little slackening at the spine between pages 64 and 65. Pale blue boards lightly rubbed and with some toning to the edges and spine, gilt titles on the front board and on the spine. This was the first book written solely about opal. It covers the story of the gemstone from the time of the Romans in the Augustine age, how it is formed, where it is found and how to care for it. In the end-note to the reader on page 111, Skertchly writes that the publishers 'asked me to write a series of little books on gemstones, and gave me an entirely free hand. As this, the first of them shows, they will not be mere gatherings from other harvests, but original works embodying the results of my own experience'. This may have been the only volume in Flavelle's Gem Series. As most copies appear to have been discarded and destroyed, this is a rare book, much sought-after by collectors of works about opal. Shipping will be reimbursed on this item (ie, free shipping). Near offers considered.. First edition.. Hardcover. Very Good.

A Collection of Seventeen Original Illustrations by Cyrus Cuneo.

[c.1908-1910] - 17 signed original black & white illustrations in oils, gouache, & crayon, all on heavy artist?s board of varying sizes with printers? annotations on versos; 2 illustrations with sl. damage to board, a few sl. faded, but well preserved overall. A wonderful collection of dramatic and atmospheric black and white illustrations to early 20th century sensation and detective novels including six (likely seven) illustrations to Baroness Orczy?s pioneering and immensely popular tales of Lady Molly of Scotland Yard (published in Cassell?s Magazine in 1909) featuring one of the earliest female detectives. All are marked up on the verso with printers directions and annotations. Born in San Francisco to an Italian family, Cyrus Cincinnati Cuneo, 1879-1916, was determined from an early age to be an artist. He travelled to Paris to study at Whistler?s academy and from there moved to London where he soon found work. His reputation as an illustrator flourished and he worked regularly for The Illustrated London News contributing drawings of Canada (including a commission for the Canadian Pacific Railway), celebrity portraits and scenes from the London underworld. By the age of 30 he was chosen by the ILN to depict the ?epoch-making events? of the early twentieth century: King Edward VII's funeral and the Coronation of George V. He joined and became chairman of the prestigious Langham Sketching Club of which Rackham and Munnings were members and preceded by the likes of Tenniel and Keene. A prolific illustrator of popular novels, Cuneo?s burgeoning career was tragically cut short at the age of 36 when he died of blood poisoning, contracted by an accidental pin prick at a dance. His son, Terence Cuneo, 1907-96, was an English painter known for his railway and military scenes; following in his father?s footsteps he was the official artist at Queen Elizabeth II?s Coronation. (Peppin & Micklethwait, Dictionary of British Book Illustrators: The Twentieth Century.) 1. (ORCZY, Emmuska Orczy Baroness.) Illustration for Lady Molly of Scotland Yard in Cassell?s Magazine. Sl. faded. A man stands at the head of a table, addressing a room full to bursting with an enraptured audience of over 20 men. 21 x 29cm. Best known as the creator of The Scarlet Pimpernel, Baroness Orczy first published Lady Molly of Scotland Yard in Cassell?s Magazine in 1909 with the first book edition, also illustrated by Cuneo, appearing in 1910. Running quickly to three editions, Lady Molly was one of the first fictional female detectives and a precursor of the lay sleuth who relies on brains rather than brawn. 2. (ORCZY, Emmuska Orczy Baroness.) Illustration for Lady Molly of Scotland Yard in Cassell?s Magazine. A man lies in bed as he attended to by a nurse. A lady and older gentleman stand beside the bed looking on. 22 x 31cm. 3. (ORCZY, Emmuska Orczy Baroness.) Illustration for Lady Molly of Scotland Yard in Cassell?s Magazine. ?Her Serene Highness the Countess of Hohenberg? ?Omit? is written in pencil at the lower margin. Lady Molly walks into a room with her arm outstretched prepared to meet someone, presumably the Countess of Hohenberg. A maid stands behind her in the doorway. 4. (ORCZY, Emmuska Orczy Baroness.) Illustration for Lady Molly of Scotland Yard in Cassell?s Magazine. ?Oh but now I think of it can you drive a motor car?? Lady Molly sits at a table addressing a handsome gentleman who leans on the table towards her. 25.5 x 32cm. 5. (ORCZY, Emmuska Orczy Baroness.) Illustration for Lady Molly of Scotland Yard in Cassell?s Magazine. In a large pantry, two ladies stand, engaged in what appears to be an intense conversation. A third lady, looking alarmed, sits at a table in the background. 21.5 x 30cm. 6. (ORCZY, Emmuska Orczy Baroness.) Illustration for Lady Molly of Scotland Yard in Cassell?s Magazine. ?Ask Philip Baddock if my threats are paltry?? A startled looking gentleman is given the cold shoulder by Lady Molly. 17.5 x 25cm. 7. (ORCZY, Emmuska Orczy Barones [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        Also sprach Zarathustra. Ein Buch für alle und keinen. Expl. Nr. 394 / 530 * G A N Z P E R G A M E N T - H a n d e i n b a n d

Van de Velde, Henry- Art Nouveau Printing Highpoint] Also Sprach Zarathustra

Drugulin for Insel-Verlag, Leipzig 1908 - Folio. Original stiff vellum with yapp edges with old gilt vignette on front cover, spine gilt with lettering surround by thick gilt-blocked design, after designs by Henry van der Velde. Limited to 430 Copies, to which this is number 265, printed the colophon in gold. A lavish and thoroughly Art Nouveau production featuring some of the best work by Henry van der Velde, Belgium architect and designer who is considered the originator of the Art Nouveau style, characterized by extended and stylized lines depicting natural subjects such as trees, flowers and human figures. A large book, measuring 10 x 15 inches and an inch and a half thick, featuring a double-page ornamental title, printed title with vignette, each part with separate title, head- and tail-pieces, all printed in purple and gold, all after designs by Henry van der Velde, text printed in black and gold, type designed in 1900 by G. Lemmen and Count Harry Kessler. Also sprach Zarathustra, Nietzsche's literary and philosophical masterpiece, consists of four parts, which were published between 1883 and 1885, however the complete work did not appear until 1892, and received little attention during his lifetime. Printed on handmade Van Gelder-Bütten paper with the signet of the Weimar Nietzsche Archive designed by van de Velde as a watermark. Henry van de Velde took over the entire process of book production from design to running of the press. Harry Graf Kessler had already occupied himself with the production of a luxury print of Nietzsche's Zarathustra in 1897 and, quite soon, commissioned Henry van de Velde, whom he had met in November 1897, with a design and Georges Lemmen with the development of the writing. "Thus Zarathustra (1908) came to be printed for the Insel publishing house in the three colors black, purple and gold, monumental in the format of the folio-size binding, monumental in the typographical beauty. [.] The decorative double title underlines [.] van de Velde's intention to impose an artistic form on the object book that gave this life. [.] The recourse to the texts of Nietzsche was, incidentally, closely related to the appointment of van de Veldes to Weimar. A wonderful copy, the binding in near fine condition with a slight weakening to small portion of upper outside joint, usual soiling, internal hinges solid with no signs of starting or weakening. Apart from minimal browntoning to preliminary pages, a fine copy internally. Certainly one of the more beautiful and significant illustrated press books of the period, if not since then.         Ms. Brief mit eigenh. U. und kleinen eh. Korrekturen.

Berlin, 2. XI. 1908. - 1 S. 4to. Tutzing, H. Schneider, 1967, Nr. 175.
