        My African Journey

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1908. First edition, only printing. Hardcover. Near fine. This is a superior copy of the British first edition, only printing of My African Journey, Churchill's travelogue on Britain's possessions in East Africa, written while he was serving as Undersecretary of State for the Colonies. This book is notable, among other things, for being the only one of his many books to contain photographs allegedly taken by the author. In the summer of 1907 Churchill left England for five months, making his way after working stops in southern Europe to Africa for "a tour of the east African domains." In early November, Churchill would kill a rhinoceros, the basis of the striking illustration on the front cover of the British first edition of his eventual book. By now a seasoned and financially shrewd author, Churchill arranged to profit doubly from the trip, first by serializing articles in Strand Magazine and then by publishing a book based substantially upon them. In November 1908 Hodder and Stoughton published My African Journey as a book, which was a substantial 10,000 words longer than the serialized articles. The British first edition is striking, with a vivid red binding and a prominent front cover bearing a woodcut illustration in blue, grey, and black of Churchill with his bagged white rhinoceros. The red cloth spine proved exceptionally vulnerable to sunning and the lovely books seem to have attracted handling, making wear and soiling the norm. Spotting is also endemic. Truly bright and clean copies are scarce. Here is a near fine copy, particularly notable for its binding. The red cloth binding is square, tight, and immaculately clean, retaining nicely rounded spine and sharp corners. The striking illustrated front cover is simply pristine, as is the blank rear cover. The spine shows only mild color shift, retaining bright gilt. The almost total absence of exterior wear is quite unusual. The sole exterior sign of wear is a .5 inch scuff to the bottom edge of the rear board. The contents remain bright with no previous ownership marks and retain a crisp, unread feel. The 61 photographs of this edition were tipped in rather than bound, so copies should always be carefully checked to ensure the presence of all illustrations and maps. All illustrations and maps are present in this copy, as is the tissue cover at the frontispiece. The chief flaw of this copy is one endemic to the edition - spotting, which is heavier to the page edges, first free endpaper, and half title, lighter once past the preface and only intermittent within the balance of the text. The top edge is lightly dust soiled, the fore and bottom edges bright apart from the spotting. The exceptional binding is protected with a removable, clear mylar cover.         Base Ball in Cincinnati

Cincinnati, 1908. Hardcover. Very good-. Second edition of this rare and desirable baseball book, which was first published in 1907. 277 pages, extensively illustrated with photographs and diagrams. Original blue cloth decorated in red. Moderate cover wear (corners rubbed and bumped, some soiling to the cloth). Binding sound, text and endpapers unmarked. Slight musty odor. An early and detailed account of the first professional baseball team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings. The author was the son of George Ellard, one of the original members of the Cincinnati Baseball club in 1866. Feeling that the notable history of baseball had been overlooked by historians of Cincinnati, and motivated by both civic and familial pride, Ellard drew on his own collection of baseball books, records, photographs, and memorabilia to rectify the situation. The result was the first complete history of the development of the sport in Cincinnati beginning with its organization in the 1860s and recounting the notable victories and defeats and the evolution of the club to the time of writing. It also includes a brief general account of the history of baseball in America and lays out the rules of the game.

Autograph Letter Signed, 2 separate pages 4to, on lined ?Cottage Point, Lackawaxen, Pennsylvania? stationery, Christmas Day 1907

A poetic tribute to friendship, with information on his writings. â??To Alan... I have never had a friend... I have always been a little afraid of you... because I liked you and was afraid you would soon see through me, and regarding me as an opaque, substanceless [sic] shadow, pass me by... I never thought of being different from my real self... I said, â??If he is ever to like me at all, it must be with bad and all!â??â? Grey notes that he never cared what anyone thought of him, but that he â??did care what you thought.â? He refers to his wife, Dolly (Lina Roth): â??She is a woman and thinks me a hero, and you are a man and know that I am not.â? He further elaborates on his meeting Alan and becoming his friend in a very romanticized manner: â??Such glimpses as I have had myself in some gray sleepless morning hour... twilight lonesome... have bewildered and terrified me. I have seen a calm, deep, star-studded pool and I have seen a maelstrom. So hereâ??s to the day I blindly broke into your office, broke in when the world was dark... the day I broke in, to find a friend....â? And further, â??What you said... is dearer to me than to see this lion-story with Harperâ??s imprint [referring most likely to The "Last of the Plainsmen" which was not published by Harperâ??s].â? He talks of his â??struggle against darknessâ? made light because â??hope and faith are light.â? The letter concludes with details of his writing. â??I have written seven chapters of The Last of the Plainsmen [published 1908] since I saw you. I donâ??t know how good it is, but Iâ??ll gamble what the desert looks and feels like... the Grand Canyon... what Buffalo Jones was... simply telling the thing as reminiscence... But the story... has taken on a new life. I seem to have a different feeling for it... Iâ??ve got the desert, and the forest... the wind... the sun, all right here with me.â? Signed, â??Well, Banzai! Old Man â?? Yours Zane.â?
