Artificial and Natural Flight. With 95 illustrations.

London/New York, Whittaker & Co., 1908.. 8°. XV, 166 pages. Original cloth in rather poor condition. Inscribed by Maxim: To my old Friend Wm. Genth with the compliments of the Author Hiram S. Maxim - London, Jan. 1909". (William Genth was an arcade operator and game reseller. He had a manufacturing company in Cleveland, Ohio). Bound within: Original advertising of "Artificial and Natural Flight" - It is of especial interest and value to those making a study of Aeroplanes". American-born (Maine, 1840) Sir Hiram S. Maxim was rather unsuccessful as a designer of flying machines, but one of the contraptions he invented to simulate flight became one of the most successful amusement park rides of his time, and one that is still popular today, the "Captive Flying Machine." He held numerous patents on items ranging from light bulbs to hair-curling irons, but his great success was the "Maxim Gun." It was a machine gun that proved crucial in the Colonial wars of the British Empire, and which was largely improved by the invention of smokeless gunpowder by one other prolific inventor of the era, Hudson Maxim, who happened to be Hiram's brother. Maxim's true interest since his early years was flight and flying machines, and perhaps the invention and sale of guns was but a means of financing his experiments in flight. A small correction, most likely by Maxim himself, is inserted on p. x of the preface, where a number 20 is crossed out and replaced by a 10 in ink. Boards soiled and discolored at the edges, but still sturdy. Text very clean. Ninety five drawings and photographs. Overall, a good copy of this early treatise by one of the most interesting characters to undertake the exploration of human flight..

        Anne of Green Gables

Boston:: L.C. Page,, 1908. Boston: L.C. Page, 1908. First edition dated "April 1908" on the verso of title page. Octavo, original brown cloth, titles to the spine in gilt and front panel. Mounted pictorial label on front panel. Illustrations by M.A. and W.A.J. Claus. First edition copies are generally found in the more common green cloth bindings. (Peter Parley to Penrod, p. 124) In excellent near fine condition, showing some light wear to the extremities and front panel. Housed in a custom quarter morocco box.Anne (with an "e") has been stealing the hearts of readers generation after generation since it was first published in 1908. At that time, there were not many great female protaganists in novels, but there was a great audience of women readers who fell in love with this bright and extremely imaginative red-headed orphan. The book was an immediate sensation and the series followed. It's one of these most beloved girl books ever written, having sold more than 50 million copies worldwide and translated into at least 20 languages. It has also been adapted into numerous films, television series, and plays. "Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we know all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?

Ruwenzori an Account of the Expedition of HRH Prince Luigi Amedeo of Savoy Duke of the Abruzzi

Archibald Constable and Co. Ltd., London 1908 - With a preface by HRH The Duke of the Abruzzi. Red brick cloth covered boards gilt titling to front board and to spine (a little rubbed and slightly faded). Some marks/spots but sound. Front endpaper inscription clipped. The translation from the Italian has been made by Caroline de Filippi, nee Fitzgerald. The illustrations are from photographs taken by Vittorio Sella, member of the expedition. Full colour frontispiece from the painting by A Fitzgerald (tissue guard). 408 pp, hinges just starting. 24 photogravures and 5 folding panoramas by Vittorio Sella, numerous black & white illustrations from photographs, including 12 full-page, 2 folding diagrams, 5 including 3 coloured (folding). This is a very scarce work of Africana. The mountain range of Ruwenzori is believed to be the mythical mountains of the Moon referred to by Ptolemy. Located in central Africa, these snowy mountains drain into the lakes that feed the Nile making them the true source of the great river. Perpetually shrouded in mists, Stanley and other explorers thought upon first sight of the mountains that they were simply a trick of the eye. Many explorers had tried to ascend these peaks but had never succeeded. The Duke's expedition was the first to truly explore and document the range after nearly half a century of speculation, setting in place the final piece of the Nile puzzle. This successful expedition climbed all the major mountain peaks. A REMARKABLE NARRATIVE. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        My African Journey

London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1908. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very good plus. This is a collector-worthy copy of the desirable British first edition. My African Journey is Churchill's travelogue on Britain's possessions in East Africa, written while he was serving Undersecretary of State for the Colonies. This book is notable, among other things, for being the only one of his many books to contain photographs allegedly taken by the author. This first and only printing is a striking edition, with a vivid red binding and a pictorial front cover bearing a woodcut illustration of Churchill with his bagged white rhinoceros depicted in blue, grey, and black. The red cloth spine proved exceptionally vulnerable to sunning and the lovely books seem to have attracted handling, making wear and soiling the norm. Truly bright and clean copies are quite rare. Here is a British first edition, only printing in very good plus condition. The red cloth binding is square, clean, and bright, with a nicely rounded spine. The spine retains strong red color and bright gilt, with only very slight color shift between the covers and spine. The striking, illustrated front cover - a signal feature of this edition - is notably bright and free of any scuffing or blemishes. Light wear is confined to extremities, with a short .25 inch split and slight fraying at the upper rear hinge and some modest staining of the spine just below the title and to the lower half at the rear hinge and spine center. Nonetheless, well-preserved spine color and bright gilt make spine presentation superior for this edition. The contents are unusually bright and clean. We find no previous ownership marks. A few trivial instances of spotting appear confined to the prelims, with none noted on the page edges. The 61 photographs of this edition were tipped in rather than bound, so copies should always be carefully checked to ensure the presence of all illustrations and maps. All illustrations and maps are present, as is the tissue cover at the frontispiece. The endsheets show a partial split at the front gutter but the mull beneath remains fully intact. The top edge is only lightly dust soiled. The binding is protected in a clear, removable archival mylar jacket. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A27.1, Woods/ICS A12(aa), Langworth p.81

[Original Autograph Letter, Signed ("Father"), to His Daughter, Jean Clemens]

New York. 20 May 1908.. Three pages, in ink, ca. 250 words, on three panels of a folded quarto sheet of plain letterhead ("51 Fifth Avenue"). With the envelope, addressed in the hand of Miss Lyon, his secretary. A warm and loving letter from Clemens to his youngest daughter, Jean (1880 - 1909), then at Eastern Point in Gloucester, Mass, during one of the extended separations from her family due to her need for special care for her epilepsy: "Jean dear, welcome to your new home & happiness therein! In earlier days I would not have expected you to be otherwise than unhappy in a new & strange home, but your spirit & your philosophy have undergone great & beneficent improvement in these latter days, along with your improved physical health. I am aware that you are sweet & forgiving & helpful, now, & not fretful & not given to complaining & fault- finding...." He writes further in a positive and encouraging vein, praising her increased interest in helping others, noting "I wish I was like this myself, but it was long ago pelted out of me if it was ever in me, & I am too old & 'set' now, to learn to interest myself in anybody's welfare but my own." He adds news of plans to go to the farm, house arrangements and "negociations for an automobile," and closes: "With lots of love & kisses Father."

Houghton was a member of the Conservation Committee of the CFC.& & The New York Times reported the following on the dinner "Three hundred members of the Camp Fire Club of America attended a dinner last night in honor of Col. C.J. Jones of Arizona, known as "Buffalo Jones, for his effort to preserve the American Bison. William A Hornaday, curator of the New York Zoological Gardens, was toastmaster. Capt. Jack Crawford, the "poet scout"; Ernest Thompson Seton, and Charles S. Bird paid tributes to the Veteran plainsman. Messrs. Crawford and Seton sat at the speaker's table in a cowboy costume, with Buffalo Jones who wore all the trappings of the Frontier."& & Jones has inscribed the book on the front free endsheet "With the compliments of - "The Last of the Plainsmen" - C.J.Jones". Grey has inscribed the book below Jones' inscription "And the author - Zane Grey". Seton has inscribed on the second free endsheet "To - Augustus Seymour Houghton' jr. - ? ? - of - Ernest Thompson Seton." Seton has included a small sketch of Johnny Bear and a pawprint. Beneath Seton's inscription is Crawford's "By all the gods it makes me smile - to see the this little Seaton [sic] bear - but, this I know will make you laugh - I mean my awful - J.W.         SARDONICS: SIXTEEN SKETCHES

New York: Metropolitan Syndicate, Inc.,. [1908]. original light green cloth, lettered in red on front and spine panels.. Light wear to crown of spine panel, else a near fine, bright copy.. (#8425). First edition. The rare first issue with integral title leaf bearing the "Metropolitan Syndicate" imprint and bound in non-pictorial green cloth. SARDONICS is the first of Lyon's two books, both collecting some of his short fiction. Lyon's untimely death at age 33 cut short a promising literary career. His fiction was of high caliber and has been favorably compared with that of Stephen Crane and Ambrose Bierce. "The 31 tales and sketches in [SARDONICS and GRAPHICS] can be properly compared with the work of Crane and Bierce for vivid, highly characterized and purposeful narrative. 'The Second Motive' in SARDONICS and 'Revenge' in GRAPHICS are psychological murder tragedies at the two extremes of the social scale. Lyon, like Crane and Norris, died before his talents had fully matured and, unfortunately, when his work had only begun to appear in McCLURE'S MAGAZINE and to attract special attention." - Bennett, A Practical Guide to American Book Collecting, p. 204. Most of the stories in SARDONICS are mystery or detective shorts, some with fantastic elements. "Into the Fourth Dimension" concerns the fate of the inventor of a device to project people into other dimensions who is poisoned in a Chinese restaurant, kills his tormentor, and escapes into another dimension with disastrous results. Smith, American Fiction, 1901-1925 L-615. Not in Hubin (1994).
