NOTES OF A BOTANIST ON THE AMAZON & ANDES BEING RECORDS OF TRAVEL on the Amazon and it's tributaries, the Trombetas, Rio Negro, Uaup?s, Casiquaiari, Pacimoni, Huallaga, and Pastasa; as also to the Cataracts of the Orinoco, along the eastern side of the Andes of Peru and Ecuador, and the shores of the Pacific, during the years 1849-1864. Edited and condensed by Alfred Russel Wallace, OM., F.R.S. TWO VOLS. COMPLETE.

MacMillan and Co., Limited,, London: 1908 - 518 pp.; 542 pp. First edition; contemporary, green cloth; gold lettering stamped across the spine; top edge gilt; fp. with tissue guard; 71 illustrations; 7 maps (two fold-out). Vol. I: v-lii; 1-518; f.p. portrait Richard Spruce, PhD; Wallace's preface pp. v-ix; list of books and papers published by Spruce p. xlii. Vol. II: [v]-vii; [1]-542. Hinges starting vol. II; endpapers foxed both vols.; fp. foxed edges; spine faded; closed tears; see additional images provided. This work, along with Bates The Naturalist. . . and Wallace's own Amazon and Rio Negro. . . comprise the three most important works of Amazon natural history by 19th century English speaking naturalists. Quoting the Preface (by Wallace): "Shortly after Spruce's death, I offered to do what I could to put together a narrative of his travels from his Journals and letters, if, on examination of the materials, it seemed possible to do so. His executor, Mr. M.B. Slater, was anxious that I should undertake the duties of a literary executor; but, partly owing to both of us being fully occupied with our own affairs, it was only after a delay of eleven years that I was able to begin the preparation of the present volumes. The first eight chapters of Spruce's proposed Notes of a Botanist, etc. (as given on the title-page), had been carefully written out (in a large account-book) during his last years in South America, and were apparently ready for publication after being copied and finally corrected. With considerable condensation, this constitutes the first six chapters of the present work. The illustrations are mostly from Spruce's own pencil sketches and drawings. Most of the larger of these were in very delicate outline, but a few were highly finished; and from these, as indicating the type of scenery, the outlines have been shaded by a skilled artist under my directions, so as to produce very lifelike and attractive views in districts quite beyond the sphere of the travelling photographer. . . The beautiful portrait of Spruce forming the frontispiece was taken by a friend of Spruce's four years before his death. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

With nineteen beautiful tipped-in coloured plates, backed with cartridge paper. There is no obvious single source for the plot of The Tempest, but researchers have seen parallels in Erasmus's Naufragium, Peter Martyr's De orbe novo, and an eyewitness report by William Strachey of the real-life shipwreck of the Sea Venture on the islands of Bermuda. In addition, one of Gonzalo's speeches is derived from Montaigne's essay Of the Canibales, and much of Prospero's renunciative speech is taken word for word from a speech by Medea in Ovid's poem Metamorphoses.       London: Methuen, 1908. London: Methuen, 1908. First Edition. Publisher?s cloth; front hinge cracked; slight page staining; very good plus in a custom clamshell box. Presentation copy; inscribed on the half-title by Jacobs, ?To Mark Twain with the author?s compliments. Oct. 1908.? With the ?S.L. Clemens - 1908? signature inside the front cover. Below the inscription, Twain has written, apparently in passing the book on to someone else, ?It?s a delightful book. Mark. Bog House, Bermuda, March/10. I have read it about 5 times. The above verdict stands.? Apparently, Twain found Chapter V especially praiseworthy. On two pages he has annotated the text with over 90 words. There are numerous small ink corrections throughout the text, likely by Twain.

        My African Journey

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1908. London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1908. First edition, only printing. Hardcover. Very good. This book is from the personal collection of Churchill's bibliographer, Ronald I. Cohen. This is a very good copy of the British first edition, only printing of My African Journey, Churchill's travelogue on Britain's possessions in East Africa, written while he was serving as Undersecretary of State for the Colonies. This book is notable, among other things, for being the only one of his many books to contain photographs apparently taken by the author. In the summer of 1907 Churchill left England for five months, making his way after working stops in southern Europe to Africa for "a tour of the east African domains." In early November, Churchill would kill a rhinoceros, the basis of the striking illustration on the front cover of the British first edition of his eventual book. By now a seasoned and financially shrewd author, Churchill arranged to profit doubly from the trip, first by serializing articles in Strand Magazine and then by publishing a book based substantially upon them. In November 1908 Hodder and Stoughton published My African Journey as a book, which was a substantial 10,000 words longer than the serialized articles. The British first edition is striking, with a vivid red binding and a prominent front cover bearing a woodcut illustration in blue, grey, and black of Churchill with his bagged white rhinoceros. The red cloth spine proved exceptionally vulnerable to sunning and the lovely books seem to have attracted handling, making wear and soiling the norm. Spotting is also endemic. Truly bright and clean copies are scarce. Here is a clean copy in very good condition overall. The red cloth binding remains clean with nicely rounded spine, distinct spine gilt, and only slight color shift to the spine, which retains fairly strong red color. Though the binding is notably clean, there is moderate overall wear that shows as minor fraying at the spine ends, and small bumps to the lower corners. There is also loss of some of the black print on the right half of the front cover, affecting the illustration of Churchill, the lower portion of the rhino, and the right side of the title and author print. It is unclear whether this is the result of poor original stamping or wear, given that there is no visible scuffing to the front cover surface. The contents are quite clean for the edition. A trivial hint of spotting appears confined to the front pastedown, first free endpaper, and fore edge. A single gift inscription inked on the first free endpaper is dated "August - 1st - 1910". The 61 photographs of this edition were tipped in rather than bound, so copies should always be carefully checked to ensure the presence of all illustrations and maps. All illustrations and maps are present in this copy, as is the tissue at the frontispiece. The rear hinge shows a cosmetic split to the gutter paper, but the binding is uncompromised, tight and firm.         Original Framed Curtis Photogravure: Big Ox - Apsaroke

, 1908. 1908. Fine. 1908 Original photogravure by Edward S. Curtis, from Volume IV of 'The North American Indian', the definitive twenty volume work on Native Americans commissioned by J. P. Morgan. This photograph measures 7.25 x 5.5 inches, matted and housed in a decorative wooden frame measuring 17 x 14.25 inches. A fine image, printed on tissue with very subtle wrinkling from matting, with related material inserted into a pocket on the verso. From the biographical sketch of Big Ox printed on p. 197 of volume IV: "He had led ten successful war-parties and was rising rapidly when about 1877 his private enemy, White Thigh, made medicine against him and 'he went under', losing all his property and influence... He asked the people to bring him a living jack-rabbit and some long cactus thorns. When these were given to him, he thrust a thorn into each eye of the rabbit, saying, as he turned it loose, 'Here goes White Thigh!' That day, it is asserted, White Thigh lost his sight... As a Thunder medicine-man Big Ox is feared by his tribesmen, lest if his displeasure be incurred he may cause Thunder to strike the unlucky one"

London: George Newnes, Limited, 1908. London: George Newnes, Limited, 1908. First Illustrated edition. Paperback. Near fine. This book is from the personal collection of Churchill's bibliographer, Ronald I. Cohen. This is a beautiful, collector worthy copy of the first illustrated edition of Savrola, scarce thus. Savrola is Churchill's third book and only novel. A very young Churchill was exuberant about publication at the time. Even though Savrola was his third published book, it was actually the first book he undertook and the second he completed. He would later make deprecating comments about his novel. In his 1930 autobiography he wrote, "I have consistently urged my friends to abstain from reading it [Savrola]." However, his mixed feelings about his only novel did not keep Churchill from writing a foreword to a new edition in 1956: "The preface to the first edition in 1900 submitted the book 'with considerable trepidation to the judgment or the clemency of the public.' The intervening fifty-five years have somewhat dulled though certainly not changed my sentiments on this point." Irrespective of Churchill's feelings about his book, this novel certainly provides an interesting insight into the early political perspective and sentiment of the then very young Churchill. The first edition was issued in 1900. This very early paperback - the first illustrated edition - followed in 1908 as part of publisher George Newnes' “Sixpenny Novels Illustrated” series. The front cover bears a dramatic illustration and there are two full-page illustrated interior plates on coated paper (one as the frontispiece and the second facing p.30). As a pulp paperback from the early Twentieth Century, few can be expected to have survived; it is obviously scarce and most often seen with significant wear, damage, and losses. Here, then, is a notable exception. This is a near fine copy in exceptional condition given the age and inherent fragility of the edition. The illustrated wraps binding remains notably clean, bright, and square. The spine shows no creasing and this copy has clearly not been read. The spine print remains bright and the spine shows only fractional chipping at the foot and short splits at the hinge ends. The front and rear covers remain bright with only the slightest soiling. The rear cover shows fractional wear along the bottom edge, as does the front cover along the fore edge with some creasing to the upper front corner. The contents remain clean and complete with no previous ownership marks. The pages are toned, as is inevitable given the pulp paper and age, but less so than nearly any other copy we have examined.
