REBEL PRIVATE: FRONT AND REAR EXPERIENCES AND OBSERVATIONS FROM THE EARLY FIFTIES AND THROUGH THE CIVIL WAR

Press of The Greer Print, 1908., 1908. First edition. 8vo. Signed by Gladys Fletcher in ink on the front fly leaf, and signed in pencil on the author's page by W. A. Fletcher. Decorated cloth, 193 pp. Fletcher's rememberances has been hailed by historians as a classic and indispensable work of a common foot soldier who happened to have fought in many of the war's most dramatic engagements. Fletcher returned to East Texas following the Civil War, where he owned a successful lumber business until his death in the early 1900s. Howes F194 says, "Best personal narrative by a Confederate private. An excellent Civil War narrative about a man who enlisted in the 5th Texas Cavalry in 1861 and later transferred to the 8th Texas Cavalry in 1864. Laid-in is a newspaper clipping that attributes the book GONE WITH THE WIND to the writings of this book. Most of the [original] edition was destroyed by fire." Some rubbing to the fore-edges of the covers and light wear to the spine ends, else a very good copy of a rare book.

THE MAN THEY COULD NOT HANG. THE LIFE STORY OF JOHN LEE

The Arthur Westbrook Company, [1908]., 1908. First edition. 7 1/4" x 5" color pictorial wrappers. 94 pages, contents, prologue, "The Trial Recalled." The story of John Henry George Lee, better known as John "Babbacombe" Lee, an Englishman who served several years in the Royal Navy and was a known thief. In 1885, he was convicted of the brutal murder of his employer, Emma Keyse, at her home at Babbacombe Bay near Torquay on 15 November 1884. The evidence was weak and circumstantial, amounting to little more than Lee having been the only male in the house at the time of the murder, his previous criminal record, and being found with an unexplained cut on his arm. Despite this and his claim of innocence, he was sentenced to hang. On 23 February 1885, three attempts were made to carry out his execution at Exeter Prison. All ended in failure, as the trapdoor of the scaffold failed to open despite being carefully tested by the executioner, James Berry, beforehand. As a result, Home Secretary Sir William Harcourt commuted the sentence to life imprisonment. Lee continued to petition successive Home Secretaries and was finally released in 1907. Near fine copy of a scarce item.

Titel mit Wappenstempel, sonst schönes Exemplar.# Rare work from the early days of hymnological research of importance for the Bach research..- Serpelius has collected a total of 601 songs and created to nearly a thousand pages keyword references with the corresponding song number and the relevant verses. "It is immensely useful for the modern researcher, but it also has implications for the way we think about the working methods of 18th-century composers and authors of librettos. ... Some of the relationships between chorale stanzas and the words and themes of church compositions are obvious, and would probably have occurred to any author reasonably familiar with the hymn repertory. For example, the question Bin ichs?' in Bach's St. Matthew Passion, BWV 244, is answered by the stanza Ich bins, ich sollte büssen.' But the choice of some theologically appropriate stanzas is more subtle. Even though seasonal hymns would have made a good starting point in most cases, the search for just the right chorale stanza for a given purpose would have been much easier with a tool like Serpelius's concordance. There is every reason to think that authors of cantata and passion texts in the early 18th century - including those who worked with J. S .Bach - consulted Serpelius's work. Modern researchers can continue to put it to good use." (News of the American Bach Society 2002).- Good copy.

THE MAN THEY COULD NOT HANG. THE LIFE STORY OF JOHN LEE

The Arthur Westbrook Company, [1908]. - First edition. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Evensong and Morwe Song.

No place or publisher, 1908 (= 1923). Original wrappers with title ticket. xxxii p. Printed in 50 copies for private circulation only. Cover slightly worn.* Printed on mould-made paper. A story written by Charles Kenneth Scott-Moncrieff (1889-1930) when still at Winchester College and published in a school magazine. Because of the story's shocking nature (a sanctimonious headmaster receives a painful blow when he is forced to remember his obnoxious erotic behavior in his own school days) the magazine was quickly suppressed and the story published only 15 years later, when Scott Moncrieff was embarking on the translating career (Marcel Proust) that was to earn him fame.

        THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY

Charles Carrington. Paris. (1908) 1910 . FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION. Large 8vo. (10.3 x 7.8 inches). Illustrated with 7 full page engravings by Eugene Dete from drawings by Paul Thiriat, each with a printed tissue guard. A tipped in note from the publisher explains that the volume was intended to be published in 1908, hence the date on the title page, but after the text had been printed the artist fell ill and the book wasn't issued until 1910. A bright and clean copy throughout. Small printed label tipped in to the front paste-down endpaper presenting the book to the Hunt Library at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from Henry Chalfont, in memory of his parents. This label, which could be easily removed if required, has a small discreet 'Withdrawn' stamp. Very small ink stamp to the bottom of the rear blank free endpaper 'Hunt Libraries. CMU' otherwise no other marks or evidence that it was in a library. Publishers original white half Japon Vellum binding with the spine ruled and lettered in gilt. Light green paper covering within ruled gilt borders on boards. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Aside from some very minor rubbing to the extremities and a couple of tiny chips from the top and bottom of the spine, this is a lovely copy of this wonderful book. - Mason.
