Views of the Bazar Valley Field Force, 1908.

Peshawar: Mela Ram photographer, [1908] - Landscape quarto. Album leaves loose, housed in a blue cloth drop-back box, title - "Photographs" - from the original album mounted on upper panel. Overall very good. 93 gelatine silver print photos, images approx. 140 × 85 mm, mounted on 24 leaves, of these 55 single photos and 6 panoramas, three 2-section, two 3-section and one 4-section, are part of the publication and numbered in the negative with letterpress captions beneath, organized in sections charting the progress of the expedition from Khaibar via Chora, Walai, China, & Halwai, the final section, "Miscellaneous" includes the jirga, or tribal gathering, at which the peace was settled. Additionally there are 27 related gelatine silver prints of privately taken photographs, mounted on the versos of the leaves, mostly approx. 105 × 75 mm, with ink captions identifying groups and individuals of the 59th Rifles and including the names of Lieutenant Anderson and Colonel Carruthers, most relating to the Bazar Expedition, but some from the subsequent Mohmand Expedition, plus 5 photos from Davos, pasted in at rear, including the names Hohenlohe, Thompson, Campbell and Creagh. Inked map, verso of title page showing the route of the expedition. From the time of the end of the Tirah campaign in 1897–8 the Zakka Khel Afridis had "remained the persistent enemies of tranquility and progress. Numerous raids in British territory were proved to have their origin in the Bazar Valley" (Nevill, Campaigns on the North West Frontier p. 331). The autumn of 1907 brought a renewal of activity, raids being carried out "with such daring that even Peshawar city itself became the scene of wholesale robbery under arms. A military expedition was then sanctioned at the beginning of February 1908, 'limited strictly to punishment of Zakka Khel, and not occupation or annexation of tribal territory' " (ibid.) An expedition was raised under the command of Major-General Sir James Willcocks. "I had at my disposal two Brigades of Infantry, with a third on the line of communications, and in reserve four Squadrons of Cavalry, one Battalion Pioneers, with an extra Battalion of Infantry as Divisional troops, two Batteries of mountain guns, and two Companies of Sappers and Miners" (Willcocks, The Romance of Soldiering and Sport). The expedition was swiftly and efficiently successful. "From the first I made up my mind to move so quickly that the Afridis would be taken unawares The Afridis were quite dumbfounded by our rapid movement, and in twenty-four hours we had practically decided their fate. Owing to the fact that no other Afridi clan joined [them] . and the Mohmand Lashkars arrived too late, they stood no chance against the highly trained Division under my command. They never got a look in, and within a fortnight, what Punch did us the great honour of calling 'Willcocks' weekend War' was over and we were back in Peshawar." Willcocks was sent a telegram by the king himself congratulating him on the skill with which the operations had been carried forward and on "the bravery and good conduct of the troops, which I consider has been beyond all praise." A superb visual record of campaigning on the North-West Frontier. We have been unable to trace any record of another copy.

Island Hymn (Patriotic Hymn of Prince Edward Island).

Author and Composer, P.E.I. - 1908, 1st printing. () Very good. one. Broadside (20 X 26.5 cm.) printed on one side only. Paper is cream coloured and printed with black ink. Old fold lines from having been folded into six. A few old creases. Small piece missing from corner. Old closed tear with professional restoration. A great rarity and possibly unique item. The lyrics were written by Montgomery in 1908 and it was sung to the music of Lawrence Watson. It was performed the first time in public on May 22, 1908. It would appear the manuscript and related correspondence are on display at Green Gables House, Cavendish P.E.I. This printed broadside is nicely signed by Montgomery on the bottom of the page. Its survival seems to have been due to being folded and perhaps stuck in a book. Printed above the signature is the following statement "As only a limited number of copies of this are printed, please do not destroy or lose." Perhaps this was a hand out at the first performance. We can find no reference to this printing anywhere and it does not show up in Russell. A search on the internet does not reveal anything as well. It has been pointed out to us recently that the signature may be in question. As there are elements that match Montgomery's ususal signature, this is not a typical way in which she signed. We do not doubt the authenticity of the broadside but perhaps the signature is by a previous owner or perhaps an admirer at the event had her sign in this way. It still is a remarkablely rare item. In full, ?She was gazing thoughtfully at a photograph of Mark Twain on a neighbor?s mantelpiece. Presently she said, reverently, ?We?ve got a Jesus like that at home, only ours has more trimmings.?The Lotos Club, one of the oldest literary clubs in the United States, was founded in New York City in 1870 by a group of young writers, journalists and critics. Samuel L. Clemens, who joined in 1873, called Lotos ?The Ace of Clubs.? At the January 11, 1908, Lotos Club dinner in honor of Mark Twain, the guest of honor announced that had become a collector of compliments. Clemens is quoted in the January 12, 1908, edition of ?The New York Times? as telling the dinner guests, ?They say that one cannot live on bread alone, but I could live on compliments.         The Regicide: or, James the First, of Scotland. A Tragedy

Printed by Subscription for the Benefit of the Author. First edition, preceding the published trade edition of the same year.. Binding a bit rubbed; some dust-soiling and light foxing, with a small damp-stain along the lower edges; a very good, large untrimmed copy.. Rothschild 1908; NCBEL II, 963. 8vo, early 19th century mottled calf (neatly rebacked with the original spine laid down), gilt decorations, gilt inner dentelles, morocco labels, gilt lettering, untrimmed. The Regicide, which Smollett brought with him to London as an 18-year old in 1739 and upon which Smollett had hoped to establish his literary career, was never acted, and he was forced to go to sea as a ship?s surgeon instead. In his preface here, Smollett gives an account of his assorted reversals in attempting to get the tragedy produced; the account of Melopoyn?s tragedy in Roderick Random is the fictionalized version of Smollett?s ill usage at the hands of peers, theatre managers and ersatz patrons.

Australian Architecture. A technical manual .

      - Melbourne, Robertson [1908]. Octavo untrimmed in dark green morocco (spine now a dark brown) by Margaret Chapman, lettered in gilt on the spine and blocked in blind on the sides; [6],544pp, 94 plates (one colour). A very good copy. A special presentation copy bound in a credible (despite some typically clunky lettering) craft binding signed 'MC' on the rear dentelle - Margaret Chapman, one of the first professional craft binders in Australia; she established the Craftsman Bindery and won exhibition prizes in 1907 - with on heavy endpapers, a carefully calligraphed inscription from Haddon to Frank Templeman Mew 'with the affectionate greetings of his one time pupil . inscribed in Melbourne in the year 1909'. and a mounted photograph of Haddon facing the caption 'The author at work in the study at 'Anselm' Caulfield'. Haddon served his articles with Mew in London from 1881. Mew's architectural career was brief; born the second son in a family given to brewing for the eldest son and architecture for the rest, he was still young and unknown in the mid eighties when he was called back to brewing, so becoming a rich and successful businessman. For generations this was the first true Australian architecture book. Before this we have some trade and technical literature, some government reports and scattered papers and, recently discovered, a pattern book printed but probably not published in Melbourne in 1885. So Mr Haddon is now moved down to second place. This is a matter of precedence rather than importance as no-one ever saw the pattern book. Despite Haddon's approach (a textbook rather than pattern book), his examples can easily be traced to his own projects - domestic, commercial, churches, hospitals and shearing sheds. His city office in this book, for example, is a close relative to his Fourth Victoria building in Collins Street, Melbourne. His work was modern, very much Arts & Crafts (or Federation if you like) at this period and he argues for a specific response to local conditions and materials and demands a modern, honest use of materials. Not all his designs hark back to English antecedents; the colour plate here shows a city building owing a dramatic debt to Moorish Spain (and some fairytale castle) and his design for the Swinburne College building appears to be part Spanish mission and part Mesopotamian. His best-known work is the narrative essay A Message to Garcia (1899), a typical, timely, Hubbard-inspirational account of an incident in the Spanish-American War, which appealed to industrial magnates so poignantly that they distributed countless copies to promote greater efficiency among their employees. Hubbard died in the sinking of the Lusitania” (The Concise Oxford Companion to American Literature)."Hubbard described himself as an anarchist and a socialist. He believed in social, economic, domestic, political, mental and spiritual freedom. In A Message to Garcia and Thirteen Other Things (1901), Hubbard explained his Credo by writing "I believe John Ruskin, William Morris, Henry Thoreau, Walt Whitman and Leo Tolstoy to be Prophets of God, and they should rank in mental reach and spiritual insight with Elijah, Hosea, Ezekiel and Isaiah."McKenna 158, 177, 194, 205, 210, 216, and 227.

        Theodore Roosevelt Commissions a Captain

Washington, D.C. 1908 - Document Signed as President. Commission for John J.A. Clark as Captain in the Philippine Scouts. Washington, D.C., September 19, 1908. 1 p., 21 x 16 in. Excerpt"Know Ye, That reposing special trust and confidence in the Patriotism, Valor, Fidelity, and Abilities of John J.A. Clark, I do appoint him, provisionally, Captain in the Philippine Scouts, in the service of the United States.Given under my hand at the City of Washington, this nineteenth day of September, in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and eight and in the one hundred and thirty-third year of the Independence of the United States. By the President: [signed] Theodore Roosevelt"Historical BackgroundThe Philippine Scouts were organized by the U.S. Army after the Spanish - American War (1898) and existed from 1901 to the end of the Second World War. The unit, intended to combat the Philippine Revolution led by General Emilio Aguinaldo, was comprised of native Filipinos led by white American officers. Aguinaldo, who had led the revolution since 1896, loosely allied himself with the Americans against the Spanish during the war. After the American victory, Aguinaldo declared independence, but neither Spain nor the United States recognized the new nation. Aguinaldo then declared the United States an unfriendly occupying power, and fought the Americans from 1899 to 1902. The war officially came to an end when he was captured. However, conflict with resistance groups continued for close to ten years. The Philippine Scouts were formed in 1901, the final year of the war, and helped the United States in the continuing "unofficial" fighting. The Scouts also played an integral role in helping control the islands through the 1930s. They were among the first U.S. forces to fight against the Japanese during World War II.John J. A. Clark began his Philippine tour as a lieutenant, and upon arrival in 1905, he took possession of a safe from the previous officer. Having secured the safe and the government funds it contained, Clark changed its combination and assigned a responsible guard. Nonetheless, the safe was stolen. Blamed for the loss, he filed suit against the government to recover the funds for which he was responsible. He earned this promotion while the case was pending. It was finally decided in his favor in 1911, the same year he resigned from the army.SourcesUnited States. Court of Claims, Cases Decided in the Court of Claims of the United States.1910 - 1911.         BY SALT MARSHES: PICTURES AND POEMS OF OLD IPSWICH

1908 - DOW, Arthur Wesley & Everett Stanley HUBBARD. BY SALT MARSHES: PICTURES AND POEMS OF OLD IPSWICH. Ipswich: Privately printed, 1908. No. 103 of approximately 200. [32] pp. 8vo. Quarter brown cloth (unmarked) with color illustrated (front cover only) paper covered boards. Covers worn but still attractive; interior near fine, small pencil numerals to front pastedown. Eight lovely color woodblock illustrations, with other monochrome and two color designs/headpieces. "BY SALT MARSHES is Arthur Wesley Dow's tribute to the old North Shore town of Ipswich, where he was born and spent most of his life, and to his boyhood friend, Everett Stanley Hubbard. It is a collaboration somewhat in the spirit of Meteyard, Carman and Hovey in their Vagabondia books, though Hubbard was undoubtedly a lesser poet and Dow a greater artist. BY SALT MARSHES is his masterpiece, and it is evident from the numerous sketches and proofs in the Ipswich Historical Society and the Society for Preservation of New England Antiquities - some dating back as far as 1895 - that it was a labor of love. Infinite care and craftsmanship were expended on every detail. The illustrations are color woodblock prints, such as Dow described in an article in MODERN ART (1896), entitled "Painting with Wooden Blocks." This was a technique Dow had discovered in the course of his study of Japanese art, and he was a master of it, using as many as four or five different blocks, accurately registered, thinly inked to show the grain of the wood, and printed in subtle gradations of tone to achieve a luminosity that effectively evokes the quality of the light on the marshes. Although the text is printed from small gothic type, the lettering on the cover and title page was also cut by hand in woodblocks, after the manner of Meteyard and Dawson-Watson's lettering for the COURIER INNOCENT (1897)."
