POETICAL WORKS OF JOHN MILTON, English and Latin; Edited, With a Bibliographical Introduction, Life of Milton, and an Analysis of Addison’s Criticism on Paradise Lost

London: George Bell and Sons, 1908. 2 volumes. Engraved frontispiece of Milton. Small 8vo, finely bound by Bickers and Sons in full navy blue calf, spines in six compartments each separated by raised bands, gilt tooled central ornamental device in four compartments and gilt lettering in two, gilt lettered compartments and covers ruled in gilt, fine marbled endpapers, board edges gilt-tooled, t.e.g., turn-ins tooled in blind. lxiv, 337; xvi, 387. A fine, handsome and very nicely preserved set, but for some light and even mellowing to the spines. HANDSOMELY BOUND AND SIGNED BINDING BY BICKERS. In PARADISE LOST, PARADISE REGAINED and SAMSON AGONISTES Milton revived the heroic verse of Homer and Virgil to frame the tale of Satan and Paradise that has become the best-known epic poem written in English. He had difficulty in finding a publisher because of the plague of 1665, which killed many pressmen, and the Great Fire of the following year, which destroyed many printing houses&#151;and those publishers who were still operating were wary of the project because of Milton&#39;s anti-Restoration sympathies.<br> Simmons, to whom he finally came, drove a hard bargain, and according to the agreement reached and the number of copies sold Milton was paid a total of £15. Milton&#146;s work survives and is revered to this day as amongst the most significant poetry and prose ever penned and additionally important, at a defining moment in the development of the English language. A truly towering figure, Milton remains one of the most celebrated and analyzed poets in English literature. Dryden described &#145;Paradise Lost&#146; as &#145;one of the greatest, most noble and sublime poems which either this age or nation has produced,&#146; while Blake, keying in on the poem&#146;s heretical implications, described Milton as &#145;a true Poet, and of the Devil&#146;s party without knowing it.&#146;<br> This thorough collection includes not only &#145;Paradise Lost&#146; and the other major works, but the sonnets, psalms, translations, and his work in Latin.

        Swift

London - Macmillan & Co., Ltd, 1908 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A bright clean biography of Swift by Leslie Stephen. Beautifully bound in leather with gilt lettering and decoration. With an armorial binding from Heddon Court. From the &#39;English Men of Letters&#39; series. Jonathan Swift, 1667 1745, was a satirist, essayist, political pamphleteer, poet and cleric, who later became Dean of St. Patrick&#39;s, Dublin. Swift is probably the foremost prose satirist in the English language and originally published all of his works under pseudonyms or anonymously. As the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography states, Swiftas one of the very best letter-writers in English, and his correspondence speaks of a vivid and intensely sociable engagement with the public and private worlds about him. His poetryraucous, acerbic, challenging, amusing, and occasionally movingincludes the most vivid representation of the human voice in any contemporary poetry. Together the letters and poems constitute an autobiography of the man. His work has provoked strong responses from each generation of readers, and he is one of those writers whose effect on our minds and imagination will not go away. Sir Leslie Stephen, KCB, 1832 1904, was an English author, critic and mountaineer, and the father of Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell. He was also the first editor of the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. There is slight wear to the extremities, including slight bumping and discolouration. Internally the pages are clean and bright. There is a prize nameplate on the front pastedown. Overall the condition is very good..

Manuscript]: Memorandum on the Treaty Rights of the Jews of Roumania

[no publisher], London 1908 - Typescript manuscript. 16pp. String-tied maroon crocodile textured wrappers with hand-titled paper label. Numerous tears and moderate loss to the wraps but with only light toning to the interior pages except for last page which has some creasing, overall very good. This memorandum was prepared by the London Committee of Deputies of Jews, a group formed in the mid-18th Century to safeguard the interests of the Jewish community, and given to Sir Edward Grey, the longest tenured British Foreign Secretary. The memorandum outlines various violations by the Romanian government to the Convention of Paris (1858) and the Treaty of Berlin (1878). It was likely written in reaction to the previous year's Romanian peasants' revolt in which over 10,000 people were killed and the origin of which was falsely blamed on the Jews. A notable document of European prewar Jewish solidarity and reaction to anti-Semitism. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Hunts with Jorrocks

London - Hodder and Stoughton, 1908 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An edition of Hunts with Jorrocks from Handley Cross by Robert Surtees. With twenty-fiveillustrations by G. Denholm Armour. Robert Smith Surtees (17 May 1805 16 March 1864) was an English editor, novelist and sporting writer. He was the second son of Anthony Surtees of Hamsterley Hall, a member of an old County Durham family. He left for London in 1825, intending to practise law in the capital, but had difficulty making his way and began contributing to the Sporting Magazine. He launched out on his own with the New Sporting Magazine in 1831, contributing the comic papers which appeared as Jorrocks&#39; Jaunts and Jollities in 1838. Jorrocks, the sporting cockney grocer, with his vulgarity and good-natured artfulness, was a great success with the public, and Surtees produced more Jorrocks novels in the same vein, notably Handley Cross and Hillingdon Hall, where the description of the house is very reminiscent of Hamsterley. Another hero, Soapey Sponge, appears in Mr Sponge&#39;s Sporting Tour, possibly Surtees best work. All Surtees&#39; novels were composed at Hamsterley Hall, where he wrote standing up at a desk, like Victor Hugo. Condition: In an amateurhalfleather binding with black cloth covered boards. Externally, generally smart, lightly rubbed in places. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED..

        Report on Foreign Manoeuvres. 1907&#150;12.

London: Prepared by the General Staff, War Office, 1908-13 - 6 volumes, octavo. Original red cloth, title gilt to the spines and upper boards. The whole group has evidently been string-tied with 1907 on the bottom and 1912 on the top, in fairly damp and dusty conditions, and consequently the lower board of the first volume is somewhat damped, with some damping through the last 10 or so leaves, and the upper board of the last is slightly grubby and string-notched at the centre of the four edges, however, that said, the overall condition, both externally and internally, is very good. Half-tone illustrations from photographs and line drawings to the text, diagrams, maps and plans, some folding. First editions of an extremely uncommon series of confidential reports. The print-runs were between 550 to 800, but institutional holdings (just a single copy of an issue for 1906 in the IWM and one for 1912 at KCL; OCLC showing only an 1895 precursor to the series at NLW) are so sparse as to suggest that very few were ever issued. These copies have occasional ink-stamps of the Royal Army Medical Corps library. These are highly detailed, and important, reports from the British army's observers at the manoeuvres of the major foreign powers - varying year to year, but including France, Germany, Austria-Hungary, China, Japan, Russia, Turkey and the United States - in the years leading up to the First World War. As well as remarking on the specifics of organization, tactics, and techniques, there are summaries drawing more general conclusions: the increasing realism of these operations; the importance of staff work; and the "greatly extended employment of mechanical transport."         LA PREMIÈRE TENTATION DE SAINT-ANTOINE (1849-1856). Oeuvre inédite publiée par Louis Bertrand.

1908 - Paris, Charpentier, 1908. (Talvart & Place, VI, 8. - Albert Thibaudet, "La Tentation de saint-Antoine", page 166). NICE COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Encyclopaedia Japonica: A Dictionary of Commerce *FIRST EDITION*

Japan. Hardcover. A massive Japanese commercial reference from the early 1900s. Approximately 2,000 pages. Text primarily in Japanese, other than the 18-page bilingual (Japanese/English) index and an intriguing bilingual fold-out sample of various contemporary export documents. Two items laid inside front board include a double-sided bilingual glossary of commonly used trade terms and a wonderful 22" wide by 16" high colour map of the world with trade routes to/from Japan indicated in red. Most text on the map is Japanese with some place names in both English and Japanese. Please note that library name is stamped through the blank upper right corner of the map. Elaborately gilt-decorated backstrip with title in Japanese and English bears considerable wear but is still handsome and, dare we say, mysterious. Per a handwritten inscription inside the back board, this copy was presented to representatives of the Seattle Chamber of Commerce in Tokyo on 24 October, 1908 by Mr. Shonojo Moriyama, Proprietor of the Dobun_____. Edges adorned with partially-faded marbling. Usual library markings. Above-average wear. Binding intact. A marvelously unique item. Shipping weight 3.5kg/8lb. . Fair. 1906. First Edition.

        Anne of Green Gables.

L.C. Page, Boston 1908 - First edition dated "April 1908" on the verso of title page. Octavo, original brown cloth, titles to the spine in gilt and front panel. Mounted pictorial label on front panel. Illustrations by M.A. and W.A.J. Claus. First edition copies are generally found in the more common green cloth bindings. (Peter Parley to Penrod, p. 124) In excellent near fine condition, showing some light wear to the extremities and front panel. Housed in a custom half morocco box. Anne (with an "e") has been stealing the hearts of readers generation after generation since it was first published in 1908. At that time, there were not many great female protaganists in novels, but there was a great audience of women readers who fell in love with this bright and extremely imaginative red-headed orphan. The book was an immediate sensation and the series followed. It's one of these most beloved girl books ever written, having sold more than 50 million copies worldwide and translated into at least 20 languages. It has also been adapted into numerous films, television series, and plays. "Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we know all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?" [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
