Translated and edited by Alfred Percival Maudslay. Hakluyt Society Second Series Volumes 23, 24 25, 30 and 40. 1st edition. First published in 1601 in Spanish and first published in English in 1800. Volume one contains Books I through V, 1517 to 1519, considering the discover and expeditions of Francisco Hernandez de Cordova and Hernan Cortes, the march inland, and the war in Tlaxcala. Volume two contains Books V to IX, 1519 to 1520, concerning the march to Mexico, the stay there, the expedition against Narvaez, the flight from Mexico and the halt at Tepeaca. Volume three a portfolio of maps and plans, several dating from the sixteenth century, of the valley and city of Mexico. Volume four contains Books X-XIII, relating the siege and capture of Mexico, 1521, and the ensuing settlement. Volume five contains Books XIV to XVII, relating the expedition to Honduras, the return to Mexico, the rule of the Audiencia there, and the record of the conquistadors, with and appendix including the fifth letter of Cortes to the Emperor Charles V, 1526. The True History of the Conquest of New Spain, written by Bernal Diaz del Castillo, one of the Conquerors, was known and appreciated by historians and bibliographers before it was published. Antonio de Herrera quotes it frequently, Friar Juan de Torquemada also refers to it on several occasions, and Licentiate Antonio de Leon Pinelo devotes some line to it in his brief bibliography. Although the original manuscript has always been kept in Guatemala, first by the Author, and afterwards by his descendants, and still later by the Municipality of the Capital, in whose archives it is preserved today, a copy of it was made in the sixteenth century and sent to Spain to King Philip II and was there consulted by the Royal chroniclers. After its publication in Madrid by Friar Alonzo Remon of the Order of Mercy in the year 1632 the True History was universally accepted from that time onwards as the most complete and trustworthy of the chronicles of the Conquest of New Spain. A second edition followed almost immediately in the same city, some four years later a third, a fourth, and a fifth. It was translated in to English by Maurice Keatinge in 1800 and John Ingram Lockhard in 1844; into German by J von Rehfues in 1838 and Karl Ritter in 1848; into French by D Jourdanet in 1876 and Jose Maria de Heredia in 1877, and into Hungarian by Karoly Brozik in 1878 and Moses Gaal in 1899. Several of these translations obtained the honors of a second edition, as that of Keatinge in 1803, that of Rehfues in 1843 and that of Jourdanet in 1877. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, book plate on front paste downs, spine ends moderately rubbed with some mild chips, front and back page ends foxed, spine sunned, some inner hinges cracked, half titles age darkened, some foxing. Over all a good to very good set.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket.

Les 9 et 10 Thermidor: An IIe de la République (27 et 28 Juillet 1794)

André Marty, 24 Rue Duroc, Paris 1908 - Other credits: Louis Marotte (heliotypes), Jean Saude (pochoir printer), Wood, London (binding). Book title in English: The 9th and 10th of Thermidor: Second Year of the Republic (July 27 and 28, 1794). Provenance: Archibald Philip Earl of Roseberry, bookplate inside front cover. Rare limited edition book comprising text with a collection of printed facsimiles of memorabilia dealing with the events of the 27th and 28th of July 1794, during the second year of the French Revolution. It includes 77 plates, including heliotypes and pochoir prints, of original prints and documents, compiled, described and classified by André Marty, with an introduction by G. Lenotre, an expert on the Revolution and the Reign of Terror. The illustrations appear in both color and black-and-white, and include portraits, letters, decrees, views and caricatures. The pictures vary in size from full-page to smaller ones tipped onto larger pages. Attractively bound in red leather, this would make a wonderful gift for someone interested in the French Revolution. The book begins with a full text description of events on July 27 and 28, 1794, called the 9th and 10th day of Thermidor in the Republican calendar adopted for a 13-year period after the French Revolution. On 9 Thermidor, an insurrection rose up against Maximilien Robespierre, who was then guillotined the following day, ending the Reign of Terror. Théodore Gosselin (1855-1935), who wrote under the pen name of G. Lenotre (the surname litrally means "ours"), was from the Lorraine region. When Germany annexed the territory, his country chose France. Moving to Paris, he obtained a position in the finance ministry, but his true passion was history. He published articles in publications such as Figaro, Revue des deux mondes, Monde illustré and Temps. He also produced numerous works dealing with the French Revolution, especially the Reign of Terror, constructed from his research into primary documents of the era. Lenotre's work was recognized and admired by his contemporaries -- he was made an officer of the Legion of Honor and in 1932 was elected to the Académie Française. Condition: Generally very good, the interior contents with usual light overall toning though little to no wear. Some scattered foxing to preliminary and end blank pages. Covers very good with scattered wear, mostly to edges. Some fraying of edges and spine, as usual, though very much intact. Light scratching to cover design. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

POETICAL WORKS OF JOHN MILTON, English and Latin; Edited, With a Bibliographical Introduction, Life of Milton, and an Analysis of Addison&#146;s Criticism on Paradise Lost

London: George Bell and Sons, 1908. 2 volumes. Engraved frontispiece of Milton. Small 8vo, finely bound by Bickers and Sons in full navy blue calf, spines in six compartments each separated by raised bands, gilt tooled central ornamental device in four compartments and gilt lettering in two, gilt lettered compartments and covers ruled in gilt, fine marbled endpapers, board edges gilt-tooled, t.e.g., turn-ins tooled in blind. lxiv, 337; xvi, 387. A fine, handsome and very nicely preserved set, but for some light and even mellowing to the spines. HANDSOMELY BOUND AND SIGNED BINDING BY BICKERS. In PARADISE LOST, PARADISE REGAINED and SAMSON AGONISTES Milton revived the heroic verse of Homer and Virgil to frame the tale of Satan and Paradise that has become the best-known epic poem written in English. He had difficulty in finding a publisher because of the plague of 1665, which killed many pressmen, and the Great Fire of the following year, which destroyed many printing houses&#151;and those publishers who were still operating were wary of the project because of Milton&#39;s anti-Restoration sympathies.<br> Simmons, to whom he finally came, drove a hard bargain, and according to the agreement reached and the number of copies sold Milton was paid a total of £15. Milton&#146;s work survives and is revered to this day as amongst the most significant poetry and prose ever penned and additionally important, at a defining moment in the development of the English language. A truly towering figure, Milton remains one of the most celebrated and analyzed poets in English literature. Dryden described &#145;Paradise Lost&#146; as &#145;one of the greatest, most noble and sublime poems which either this age or nation has produced,&#146; while Blake, keying in on the poem&#146;s heretical implications, described Milton as &#145;a true Poet, and of the Devil&#146;s party without knowing it.&#146;<br> This thorough collection includes not only &#145;Paradise Lost&#146; and the other major works, but the sonnets, psalms, translations, and his work in Latin.

London - Macmillan & Co., Ltd, 1908 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A bright clean biography of Swift by Leslie Stephen. Beautifully bound in leather with gilt lettering and decoration. With an armorial binding from Heddon Court. From the &#39;English Men of Letters&#39; series. Jonathan Swift, 1667 1745, was a satirist, essayist, political pamphleteer, poet and cleric, who later became Dean of St. Patrick&#39;s, Dublin. Swift is probably the foremost prose satirist in the English language and originally published all of his works under pseudonyms or anonymously. As the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography states, Swiftas one of the very best letter-writers in English, and his correspondence speaks of a vivid and intensely sociable engagement with the public and private worlds about him. His poetryraucous, acerbic, challenging, amusing, and occasionally movingincludes the most vivid representation of the human voice in any contemporary poetry. Together the letters and poems constitute an autobiography of the man. His work has provoked strong responses from each generation of readers, and he is one of those writers whose effect on our minds and imagination will not go away. Sir Leslie Stephen, KCB, 1832 1904, was an English author, critic and mountaineer, and the father of Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell. He was also the first editor of the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. There is slight wear to the extremities, including slight bumping and discolouration. Internally the pages are clean and bright. There is a prize nameplate on the front pastedown. Overall the condition is very good..

Manuscript]: Memorandum on the Treaty Rights of the Jews of Roumania

[no publisher], London 1908 - Typescript manuscript. 16pp. String-tied maroon crocodile textured wrappers with hand-titled paper label. Numerous tears and moderate loss to the wraps but with only light toning to the interior pages except for last page which has some creasing, overall very good. This memorandum was prepared by the London Committee of Deputies of Jews, a group formed in the mid-18th Century to safeguard the interests of the Jewish community, and given to Sir Edward Grey, the longest tenured British Foreign Secretary. The memorandum outlines various violations by the Romanian government to the Convention of Paris (1858) and the Treaty of Berlin (1878). It was likely written in reaction to the previous year's Romanian peasants' revolt in which over 10,000 people were killed and the origin of which was falsely blamed on the Jews. A notable document of European prewar Jewish solidarity and reaction to anti-Semitism. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Hunts with Jorrocks

London - Hodder and Stoughton, 1908 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An edition of Hunts with Jorrocks from Handley Cross by Robert Surtees. With twenty-fiveillustrations by G. Denholm Armour. Robert Smith Surtees (17 May 1805 16 March 1864) was an English editor, novelist and sporting writer. He was the second son of Anthony Surtees of Hamsterley Hall, a member of an old County Durham family. He left for London in 1825, intending to practise law in the capital, but had difficulty making his way and began contributing to the Sporting Magazine. He launched out on his own with the New Sporting Magazine in 1831, contributing the comic papers which appeared as Jorrocks&#39; Jaunts and Jollities in 1838. Jorrocks, the sporting cockney grocer, with his vulgarity and good-natured artfulness, was a great success with the public, and Surtees produced more Jorrocks novels in the same vein, notably Handley Cross and Hillingdon Hall, where the description of the house is very reminiscent of Hamsterley. Another hero, Soapey Sponge, appears in Mr Sponge&#39;s Sporting Tour, possibly Surtees best work. All Surtees&#39; novels were composed at Hamsterley Hall, where he wrote standing up at a desk, like Victor Hugo. Condition: In an amateurhalfleather binding with black cloth covered boards. Externally, generally smart, lightly rubbed in places. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED..
