        Theodore Roosevelt Commissions a Captain

Washington, D.C. 1908 - Document Signed as President. Commission for John J.A. Clark as Captain in the Philippine Scouts. Washington, D.C., September 19, 1908. 1 p., 21 x 16 in. Excerpt"Know Ye, That reposing special trust and confidence in the Patriotism, Valor, Fidelity, and Abilities of John J.A. Clark, I do appoint him, provisionally, Captain in the Philippine Scouts, in the service of the United States.Given under my hand at the City of Washington, this nineteenth day of September, in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and eight and in the one hundred and thirty-third year of the Independence of the United States. By the President: [signed] Theodore Roosevelt"Historical BackgroundThe Philippine Scouts were organized by the U.S. Army after the Spanish - American War (1898) and existed from 1901 to the end of the Second World War. The unit, intended to combat the Philippine Revolution led by General Emilio Aguinaldo, was comprised of native Filipinos led by white American officers. Aguinaldo, who had led the revolution since 1896, loosely allied himself with the Americans against the Spanish during the war. After the American victory, Aguinaldo declared independence, but neither Spain nor the United States recognized the new nation. Aguinaldo then declared the United States an unfriendly occupying power, and fought the Americans from 1899 to 1902. The war officially came to an end when he was captured. However, conflict with resistance groups continued for close to ten years. The Philippine Scouts were formed in 1901, the final year of the war, and helped the United States in the continuing "unofficial" fighting. The Scouts also played an integral role in helping control the islands through the 1930s. They were among the first U.S. forces to fight against the Japanese during World War II.John J. A. Clark began his Philippine tour as a lieutenant, and upon arrival in 1905, he took possession of a safe from the previous officer. Having secured the safe and the government funds it contained, Clark changed its combination and assigned a responsible guard. Nonetheless, the safe was stolen. Blamed for the loss, he filed suit against the government to recover the funds for which he was responsible. He earned this promotion while the case was pending. It was finally decided in his favor in 1911, the same year he resigned from the army.SourcesUnited States. Court of Claims, Cases Decided in the Court of Claims of the United States.1910 - 1911.       1908 - DOW, Arthur Wesley & Everett Stanley HUBBARD. BY SALT MARSHES: PICTURES AND POEMS OF OLD IPSWICH. Ipswich: Privately printed, 1908. No. 103 of approximately 200. [32] pp. 8vo. Quarter brown cloth (unmarked) with color illustrated (front cover only) paper covered boards. Covers worn but still attractive; interior near fine, small pencil numerals to front pastedown. Eight lovely color woodblock illustrations, with other monochrome and two color designs/headpieces. "BY SALT MARSHES is Arthur Wesley Dow's tribute to the old North Shore town of Ipswich, where he was born and spent most of his life, and to his boyhood friend, Everett Stanley Hubbard. It is a collaboration somewhat in the spirit of Meteyard, Carman and Hovey in their Vagabondia books, though Hubbard was undoubtedly a lesser poet and Dow a greater artist. BY SALT MARSHES is his masterpiece, and it is evident from the numerous sketches and proofs in the Ipswich Historical Society and the Society for Preservation of New England Antiquities - some dating back as far as 1895 - that it was a labor of love. Infinite care and craftsmanship were expended on every detail. The illustrations are color woodblock prints, such as Dow described in an article in MODERN ART (1896), entitled "Painting with Wooden Blocks." This was a technique Dow had discovered in the course of his study of Japanese art, and he was a master of it, using as many as four or five different blocks, accurately registered, thinly inked to show the grain of the wood, and printed in subtle gradations of tone to achieve a luminosity that effectively evokes the quality of the light on the marshes. Although the text is printed from small gothic type, the lettering on the cover and title page was also cut by hand in woodblocks, after the manner of Meteyard and Dawson-Watson's lettering for the COURIER INNOCENT (1897)."         Land and Housing Reform by Winston S. Churchill, first edition first printing, bound in Pamphlets and Leaflets for 1907 Being the Publications for the Year of the Liberal Publication Department

The Liberal Publication Department, London 1908 - Here is quite a rarity - significant both bibliographically and to collectors. This is a very early and seldom seen Churchill speech. On 20 April 1907, a young Winston S. Churchill gave a speech on Land and Housing Reform at Drury Lane Theatre in London. At the time, Churchill was a rising star of the Liberal Party serving as Under-Secretary for the Colonies under Prime Minister Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman. This is the first edition, only printing of this speech. It is bound by the Liberal Publications Department in a volume containing speeches and pamphlets for the year 1907. Fascinating to note, this appears to be the only printing of the full text of this speech. The speech appears on pages 779 to 782 of Volume I of the Complete Speeches published in 1974, but this 1907 first printing of the speech contains significant amounts of text not included in the Complete Speeches presentation. Further, there are fascinating notes on the introduction of Winston Churchill and on the audience ("The theatre was crowded to its utmost capacity with an audience of 4,000 people.") There is even a notation in the text of a comment shouted from the audience and Churchill's reply. The volume in which the speech is bound contains pamphlets and leaflets published before 16 November 1907. Bound in a black leather pebble grain spine over green ribbed buckram covers, the book measures 8.25 inches tall by 5.5 inches wide by 1 inch thick. It contains a table of contents indexing by subject the numerous bound pamphlets and leaflets. The book is a fascinating piece of history, containing pamphlets and leaflets of various shapes and sizes, many of which are folded in and, we imagine, are unlikely to now be found anywhere else given their fragility and ephemeral nature. Condition of the bound volume is very good. The leather spine shows minor wear, particularly at the head and tail, but retains bright gilt and shows no cracking to the leather. The green cloth top board is clean and bright with minor corner wear. The rear board has a bump to the lower corner and some small white spots, but is otherwise sound and bright. The contents, including the Churchill speech pamphlet, are in excellent condition. The binding is tight, the pages are exceptionally bright and clean, and the top edge retains bright gilt. There is no spotting and no inscriptions. What a very rare and exciting find for collectors. Bibliographic reference: Cohen D11, Woods A10. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Octavo (9" x 6") issued in blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and pictorial representation of the ship Victoria on the cover, decorative blind stamp to covers. Edited by Genaro Garcia. Translated and edited by Alfred Percival Maudslay. Hakluyt Society Second Series Volumes 23, 24 25, 30 and 40. 1st edition. First published in 1601 in Spanish and first published in English in 1800. Volume one contains Books I through V, 1517 to 1519, considering the discover and expeditions of Francisco Hernandez de Cordova and Hernan Cortes, the march inland, and the war in Tlaxcala. Volume two contains Books V to IX, 1519 to 1520, concerning the march to Mexico, the stay there, the expedition against Narvaez, the flight from Mexico and the halt at Tepeaca. Volume three a portfolio of maps and plans, several dating from the sixteenth century, of the valley and city of Mexico. Volume four contains Books X-XIII, relating the siege and capture of Mexico, 1521, and the ensuing settlement. Volume five contains Books XIV to XVII, relating the expedition to Honduras, the return to Mexico, the rule of the Audiencia there, and the record of the conquistadors, with and appendix including the fifth letter of Cortes to the Emperor Charles V, 1526. The True History of the Conquest of New Spain, written by Bernal Diaz del Castillo, one of the Conquerors, was known and appreciated by historians and bibliographers before it was published. Antonio de Herrera quotes it frequently, Friar Juan de Torquemada also refers to it on several occasions, and Licentiate Antonio de Leon Pinelo devotes some line to it in his brief bibliography. Although the original manuscript has always been kept in Guatemala, first by the Author, and afterwards by his descendants, and still later by the Municipality of the Capital, in whose archives it is preserved today, a copy of it was made in the sixteenth century and sent to Spain to King Philip II and was there consulted by the Royal chroniclers. After its publication in Madrid by Friar Alonzo Remon of the Order of Mercy in the year 1632 the True History was universally accepted from that time onwards as the most complete and trustworthy of the chronicles of the Conquest of New Spain. A second edition followed almost immediately in the same city, some four years later a third, a fourth, and a fifth. It was translated in to English by Maurice Keatinge in 1800 and John Ingram Lockhard in 1844; into German by J von Rehfues in 1838 and Karl Ritter in 1848; into French by D Jourdanet in 1876 and Jose Maria de Heredia in 1877, and into Hungarian by Karoly Brozik in 1878 and Moses Gaal in 1899. Several of these translations obtained the honors of a second edition, as that of Keatinge in 1803, that of Rehfues in 1843 and that of Jourdanet in 1877. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, book plate on front paste downs, spine ends moderately rubbed with some mild chips, front and back page ends foxed, spine sunned, some inner hinges cracked, half titles age darkened, some foxing. Over all a good to very good set.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket.

Les 9 et 10 Thermidor: An IIe de la République (27 et 28 Juillet 1794)

André Marty, 24 Rue Duroc, Paris 1908 - Other credits: Louis Marotte (heliotypes), Jean Saude (pochoir printer), Wood, London (binding). Book title in English: The 9th and 10th of Thermidor: Second Year of the Republic (July 27 and 28, 1794). Provenance: Archibald Philip Earl of Roseberry, bookplate inside front cover. Rare limited edition book comprising text with a collection of printed facsimiles of memorabilia dealing with the events of the 27th and 28th of July 1794, during the second year of the French Revolution. It includes 77 plates, including heliotypes and pochoir prints, of original prints and documents, compiled, described and classified by André Marty, with an introduction by G. Lenotre, an expert on the Revolution and the Reign of Terror. The illustrations appear in both color and black-and-white, and include portraits, letters, decrees, views and caricatures. The pictures vary in size from full-page to smaller ones tipped onto larger pages. Attractively bound in red leather, this would make a wonderful gift for someone interested in the French Revolution. The book begins with a full text description of events on July 27 and 28, 1794, called the 9th and 10th day of Thermidor in the Republican calendar adopted for a 13-year period after the French Revolution. On 9 Thermidor, an insurrection rose up against Maximilien Robespierre, who was then guillotined the following day, ending the Reign of Terror. Théodore Gosselin (1855-1935), who wrote under the pen name of G. Lenotre (the surname litrally means "ours"), was from the Lorraine region. When Germany annexed the territory, his country chose France. Moving to Paris, he obtained a position in the finance ministry, but his true passion was history. He published articles in publications such as Figaro, Revue des deux mondes, Monde illustré and Temps. He also produced numerous works dealing with the French Revolution, especially the Reign of Terror, constructed from his research into primary documents of the era. Lenotre's work was recognized and admired by his contemporaries -- he was made an officer of the Legion of Honor and in 1932 was elected to the Académie Française. Condition: Generally very good, the interior contents with usual light overall toning though little to no wear. Some scattered foxing to preliminary and end blank pages. Covers very good with scattered wear, mostly to edges. Some fraying of edges and spine, as usual, though very much intact. Light scratching to cover design. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
