Behandlung der Okklusionsanomalien der Zähne. Angle's System.

. Autorisierte deutsche Übersetzung v. Josef Grünberg, Orthodontist, Berlin, redigiert von Dr.Albin Oppenheim, Wien. - Berlin, Verlag von Herman Meusser, 1908, 8°, XVI, 630 pp., 666 Abb., orig. Leinenband.. Erste Deutsche Ausgabe, nach der siebenten, bedeutend vermehrte und vollkommen umgearbeiteten Auflage! - Edward Harley Angle (1855-1930), "founder of "Scientific Orthodontica." Provost Smith upon conferring of honorary degrees at the dedication of Thomas W.Evans Dental Institute, 1915, expressed the following tribute to our great teacher, in words that can hardly be improved upon, broad, in their meaning and true in their statement: "Lover of art and nature, intimate friend of trees and flowers, but preeminently founder of the science of orthodontia, to which the best thought of a life has been given in experimentes and test." - "The first to incorporate in his teachings and writings the views of Davenport and others, publicly emphasizing that extraction of the teeth in order to cortrect maloclusion was unnecessary and even criminal; the importance of restoring normal occlusion in order that the best results might be obtsained and the teeth permanently retained." - "Dr Angle read his first paper in December, 1886, "Irregularities of the Teeth", before the Minneapolis Dental Society, repeating this before the Minnesota State Dental Society in May, 1887, and the describing for the first time (in a paper read before the Ninth International Medical Congress, 1887) what is now recognized as the "Angle System". From the simple beginning there has developed that which we now recognize as the leading method of treating irregularities of the teeth. Seven editions of his "Malocclusion of the Teeth" have gone through the press. ... Each edition was more comprehensive than the preceeding one and contained all of the advances made by the author in the intervening years. The first five editions were pamphlets, the sixth however, was more of an elaborate work; in this he clearly sets forth at length his method of operating, the devices he designed and their method of construction, with the added advantage of numerous photographic reproductions of models showing various cases before and after treatment, thus greatly enhancing the value of the work. The seventh edition brought out in 1907, a work of 627 pages, was the last published in English." - "A brief summary of Dr. Angle's development of his ideas is as follows: - The introduction of metal tubes soldered to the band, providing a "simple, compact, and ready means of attachment between band and working appliance" and the Introduction of Nickel Silver (German), of Traction Screw, of Stationary Anchorage, of Silver Solder, of Occipital Anchorage, of Occlusal Anchorage, of Adjustable Clamp Band, of Angle Impression Trays, of Soft Brass Ligature Wire, of Wire Pinches, Under a New Method of Applying Force; of Band Forming Pliers, of Resection of Frenum Labii, of Head Gear, of Chin Retractor, of Classification of Malocclusion, of Friction Sleeve Nut, Establishing of the Angle School of Orthodontia, Organized the American Society of Orthodontia, of Metal Ligatures in Orthodontia, of Specialization of Orthodontia, of Normal Occlusion (The full complement of teeth, and that each tooth shall be made to occupy its normal position), of Upper First Molar as a Basis of Diagnosis, established the American Orthodontist, of Working Retainer, of Pin and Tube Applicance, of Ribbon Arch - are contributions to orthodontics by Edward H.Angle.

Imprenta y Encuadernación Universitaria, Santiago, Chile 1908 - 2 volumes: ix+634 pages with frontispiece, photostat copies of original manuscripts, plates and bibliography; 613 pages with index. Folio (13" x 9 3/4") bound in three quarter leather with red and gilt lettering to spine. First edition. Sebastian Cabot was born to Giovanni Caboto (John Cabot), also an explorer variously credited with Genoese or Gaetan origins, and Mattea. In 1508-09 Sebastian Cabot followed in his father's footsteps by leading one of the first expeditions to find a North-West passage, and indeed claimed to have found one, but was forced to turn back by his crew. He may have found the entrance to Hudson's Bay. By 1512 Sebastian was certainly employed by Henry VIII as a cartographer at Greenwich. In the same year he accompanied the English explorer Hugh Willoughby to Spain, where he was made captain by Ferdinand V. After Ferdinand's death he returned to England. In 1516, Cabot and Sir Thomas Pert, then Vice Admiral of England, sailed in two ships to explore the coasts of Brazil and the West Indies for Henry VIII.[1] After coming under artillery fire at Hispaniola, the expedition withdrew and returned to England reportedly because of Pert's faint-heartedness.[2][3] Subsequently, Cabot moved to Spain due to greater support for explorations by the Spanish king.[4] In 1522, although once more in the employ of Spain as a member of the Council of the Indies and holding the rank of pilot-major, he secretly offered his services to Venice, undertaking to find the Northwest Passage to China. Cabot finally received the rank of captain general from Spain, and was entrusted on March 4, 1525, with the command of a fleet which was to determine from astronomical observation the precise demarcation of the Treaty of Tordesillas and then to convey settlers to the Moluccas, in order to strengthen Spanish claims there. It was officially noted as an expedition "for the discovery of Tharsis, Ophir, and Eastern Cathay." This expedition consisted of four ships with 200 men, and set sail from Sanlucar de Barrameda on April 3, 1526. This voyage might have resulted in a second circumnavigation of the world. Upon landing in Brazil, however, rumors of the wealth of the Incan king and the nearly-successful invasion of Aleixo García caused Cabot to abandon his charge and instead further explore the interior of the Río de la Plata. Cabot had already earned the disapproval of his crew by stranding the fleet in the doldrums and running the flagship aground off Santa Catarina Island. His decision regarding the Río de la Plata led to open resistance from Martin Méndez (his lieutenant general), Miguel de Rodas (pilot of the capitana), and Francisco de Rojas (the captain of one of the other vessels). He dealt with the mutiny by marooning them and other officers on Santa Catarina Island. He then traveled into the Río de la Plata and spent five months exploring the estuary. He established a fort called San Salvador at the confluence of the Uruguay and the Río San Salvador. This was the first Spanish settlement in modern-day Uruguay. Leaving the two larger ships there, he sailed up the Paraná in the brigantine and a galley constructed at Santa Catarina. His party constructed a small fort called Santo or Espíritu Santo at the confluence of the Paraná and the Río Carcarañá. This was the first Spanish settlement in present-day Argentina; the town of Caboto was later constructed nearby and named in his honor. Losing 18 men to an ambush, he returned to San Salvador, passing Diego García's expedition as he went. Cabot sent one ship back to Spain, with his reports, accusations against the mutineers, and requests for further aid. In the spring of 1529, he returned upriver to Espíritu Santo, which he discovered had been overwhelmed and burnt by the Indians during his absence. He recovered the cannon and returned to San Salvador. At a council on 6 August 1529, it was decided to return to Spain. Cabot sailed with García to São Vicente. Purchasing 50 slaves there, [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Ice-Bound Heights Of The Mustagh: An Account Of Two Seasons Of Pioneer Exploration And High Climbing In The Baltistan Himalaya

1908. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. xvi, 444 pp, 161 illustrations from photographs, 4 color and 3 photogravure plates, 2 folding maps (one neatly separated into two parts). Original cloth, somewhat rubbed, corners bumped; contents clean and sound. The American husband and wife team were wealthy, zealous, and energetic explorers who together made many expeditions to the Himalayas. Fanny, a suffragist as well as a bit of a publicity hound, made sure the world knew of her achievements as a pioneering female climber. (Among other achievements, she held the women's altitude record for 28 years after her conquest of 23,000-ft Pinnacle Peak in 1906.) Robinson (Wayward Women) amusingly describes her as having "practically battered the Karakorams into submission, first treading them over with her squat, hob-nailed figure and then pinning them down on virgin maps and charts to take home for the various Geographical Societies of England and America to fight over." This book chronicles the couple's 1902-3 expedition to the Karakoram mountains of Baltistan (norther Pakistan).

        Mansfield Park

Macmillan and Co., Ltd. London. 1908. With 24 coloured illustrations by C. E. Brock. Stunningly bound in full vellum, with ornate gilt floral decorations and gilt titles to upper cover and spine; top-edge gilt; uncut page-edges. A VG+ example that is showing some minor bowing and light, unobtrusive spotting to the vellum boards. Internally, the pages are tightly-bound and clean, with occasional light spotting to some leaves; a previous owner's gift dedication to the half-title. The outer page-edges are slightly darkened. Overall, a very good example indeed.

        My African Journey

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1908. First edition, only printing. Hardcover. This is the British first edition, only printing of My African Journey, Churchill's travelogue on Britain's possessions in East Africa, written while he was serving as Undersecretary of State for the Colonies.  This book is notable, among other things, for being the only one of his many books to contain photographs allegedly taken by the author.  In the summer of 1907 Churchill left England for five months, making his way after working stops in southern Europe to Africa for "a tour of the east African domains."  In early November, Churchill would kill a rhinoceros, the basis of the striking illustration on the front cover of the British first edition of his eventual book.  By now a seasoned and financially shrewd author, Churchill arranged to profit doubly from the trip, first by serializing articles in Strand Magazine and then by publishing a book based substantially upon them.  In November 1908 Hodder and Stoughton published My African Journey as a book, which was a substantial 10,000 words longer than the serialized articles.  The British first edition is striking, with a vivid red binding and a prominent front cover bearing a woodcut illustration in blue, grey, and black of Churchill with his bagged white rhinoceros.  The red cloth spine proved exceptionally vulnerable to sunning and the lovely books seem to have attracted handling, making wear and soiling the norm.  Spotting is also endemic. This is a very good plus copy, notable for an unusually bright binding and bright contents, with minor aesthetic flaws offsetting. The red cloth binding remains tight with nicely rounded spine and sharp corners. Spine presentation is better than usual, with only slight sunning, the color remaining strong against vivid gilt. The illustrated front cover remains beautifully bright. We note only mild overall soiling. The contents remain notably bright and crisp with no previous ownership marks and only very light intermittent spotting, mostly confined to the first few leaves and the page edges. The 61 photographs and three maps of this edition were tipped in rather than bound, so copies should always be carefully checked to ensure the presence of all illustrations and maps.  All illustrations and maps are present, as is the tissue cover at the frontispiece. The minor cosmetic flaw that prevents our grading this copy as near fine and pricing it accordingly is some red staining, potentially bled from the binding dye, to the top edge, lower fore edge, and perimeter of the pastedowns. Withal, a collector-worthy copy in superior condition to most we see. The binding is protected with a removable, clear mylar cover.         The Complete Works of Edgar Allan Poe in Ten Volumes, Illustrated

Akron, Ohio: The Werner Company, 1908. This handsome set of Poe (click on photo) is in Very Good Plus condition. Known as The Library Edition, it is bound in brick red cloth covers with die-stamped gilt spine lettering and top-edge gilt. Shelf rubbing is minimal. It has rough-cut pages, most of which are uncut and unread. Only two volumes of tales and one of poems show page-cutting by the original owner. Several pages in Volume II only have small margin stains. (I should point out that Werner also published a less expensive alternate cloth binding in pale gray that used paper labels and did not have re-enforced bindings or colored endpapers. Although the contents are identical in both editions, the gray binding is far less attractive and the paper labels are inferior to the die-stamped gilt found in this more collectible version.) Each volume contains a frontis and other illustrations, all with tissue guards. There are 36 illustrations in all. This century-old set was manufactured with re-enforced bindings so that they remain tight and secure to this day. The book has red marbelized end papers. Each volume has a striking drawing of a sailing ship bookplate from the original owner, whose name was McCruden, on the front endpaper. Each text page features a lovely Art Nouveau-inspired gray-green border. The contents are as follows: Volumes I-V: Tales; Volume VI: Poems; Volumes VII - IX: Criticisms; Volume X: Miscellany. Each volumes measures 5 3/4 by 8 1/4 inches. Length varies per volume, ranging from around 325 through 380 pages. It's a truly lovely set for the Poe aficionado. NOTE: The price will include domestic Media Mail shipping at the single-book rate. However, international buyers should contact me in advance regarding shipping costs. . Hard Cover. THE WAR IN THE AIR "is a remarkable rarity in being a future war novel which uses the viewpoint of ordinary people and deals primarily with the effects of aerial warfare on those ordinary people . the shape of Wells's argument brings him to a conclusion very different from that characteristic of the future war novels written before 1914: civilization is virtually obliterated, and the Scientific Age is brought to an end." - Stableford, Scientific Romance in Britain 1890-1950, p. 72. Kingsley Amis (New Maps of Hell) terms this novel the "most forceful" of Wells's scientific romances. Anatomy of Wonder (1976) 2-170; (1981) 1-178; (1987) 1-104; (1995) 104; and (2004) II- 1233.         My Own Farmyard Book The Picture Book Maker Series

Ernest Nister, London 1908 - A rare un-cut example of one of Nister's Picture Book Maker Series which contain model cut-outs of the illustrations for the reader to cut out and insert in the correct place within the book. There is a pocket at the front of the book which houses 8 sheets of chromolithograph illustrations [40 in all] and 4 sheets of black and white illustrations [19 in all]. Within the book there are several printed stories with blank numbered spaces for the illustrations. The theme of the stories / illustrations is animals / victorian children, all very typical Nister. Only one of the 59 illustrations has been cut out and this has not yet been mounted in the book, all of the other illustrations are un-cut, complete and intact. This book, or in fact any of the six titles in this series, is extremely rare in this complete and un-cut and un-mounted condition. Corners worn, edges rubbed, top/tail backstrip bumped. Boards a bit marked / grubby. The top edges of the front pocket holding the illustrations is torn. There is no loss of paper but I haven't repaired it as it actually makes it easier to remove the illustration sheets. Front hinge starting. Some grubbiness internally.
