[In Japanese] Eigyohin mokuroku. New Samples …

Tokyo: Yotatsu gomei gaisha, Meiji 41, 1908. Octavo. Original grey light card wraps printed in black and brown with wraparound image of a woman dressed in classical style, wearing a laurel wreath, receiving incoming mail from a flock of carrier pidgeons. Profusely illustrated throughout with engravings largely from photographs, 8 leaves, one folding, with 82 small tipped-in silk samples. Wraps very slightly rubbed, and with a few minor splits to the spine, contents variably browned, but entirely sound, overall very good. Wonderfully encyclopaedic Edwardian Japanese mail-order catalogue. Fascinating glimpse into the consumer culture of the late-Meiji period, evoking a remarkably stimulating collision between East and West. There is a lavishly illustrated section on kimonos for dress and formal ceremonies, complete with swatches of the silk, and silk/wool blends available, the colours and patterns of the fabric being very well-preserved, thus offering an excellent record of the styles current. By way of contrast, there is a substantial section illustrating the extensive range of Western style dress offered in Japan at the time including suits, silk top hats, formal coats, bowler hats, gloves, leather boots, together with all possible accoutrements collars, cuffs, studs, cigarette cases, braces, and luggage. There are also very inclusive, and timely, listings for uniforms for the Japanese Army and Navy - including those for the governor-generals of Taiwan and Chosen (Korea) - together with all forms of equipment samurai swords, military short swords, carbines, revolvers, saddles, tack, harnesses, and flags. The catalogue also includes a vast array of household articles; stoves and ranges, mantel-clocks, traditional Japanese lacquer-ware, spectacles, vanity cases, kiseru pippes with cases and accoutrements, pocket watches, geta and brogued boots, meat grinders, kendo bogu, Yankee ratchet screwdrivers, abacuses, microscopes, go sets, baseball bats, traditional brushes and stands, cruet sets, and paper lanterns. A revealing, and visually extremely appealing document of modernizing Japan.

Photo Album - German Trackless Trolleys

Germany & Belgium, 1908. Imperial Germany, Belgium, 1908. Photograph album of an important tour of then German cities Mulhouse, Strasbourg, Monheim am Rhein, and Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, and also to Brussels in Belgium, made by Manchester City Councillor Jno. R. Wilson and three other delegates, to examine and assess trackless trolley systems for potential development and implementation in England. Contains 48 sepia photographs neatly ensconced behind window mounts, recto and verso onto 12 olive green cardstock leaves, captioned in manuscript in German. 8vo. Album measuring approximately 19 x 28 cm, sage cloth boards, inscribed "Jno R Wilson Aug 1908." Photographs measure approximately 11 x 8,5 cm. Slight age toning and wear to album leaves, otherwise in Very Good Condition. A consequential undertaking indeed, four delegates set out to lay a foundation for improved means of transportation for nineteenth century civilians of England, employing electric power instead of physical horse power. To evaluate existing trolleybus systems, the natural choice was to tour Germany, where trackless trolleys were first conceived, beginning with the Electromote in 1882, and where machinery of all sorts was built to the highest standards. The voyage to the continent begins from Folkstone, to Boulogne-sur-Mer, from there to visit Mulhouse in the Alsace region, which was then part of the German Empire, situated in the territory of Alsace-Lorraine. In Mulhouse the party examines the German-built trackless trolleys of 'Stadtbahn Mulhausen' and take note of overhead equipment which they were powered. For their tour of the city, the Statue of Schweissdissi was still standing in La Place de la Réunion. Made by Fritz Beer in 1905, but found offensive by French civilians, it was moved to a park a few months later in 1908, only to be returned to its city center location by the Germans in 1939. [Mulhouse is famous for its museums, especially two relating to historic transportation, the Cité de l?'Automobile (also known as "Musée national de l?'automobile"), and the Musée Français du Chemin de Fer (also known as "Cité du train"), respectively the largest automobile and railway museums in Europe.] A tour was made of Strasbourg, also in German Alsace, where trams remained in effect, and historic sties were photographed, including St. Paul's Church on the Ill River, a major Gothic Revival architecture building. Some lovely views are captured as they travelled on the Rhine to Cologne, Mayence (now Mainz), and to Ahrweiler, a northern town in the German Bundesland of Rhineland-Palatinate. Ten photographs are taken at Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler including charming cobblestone streets, wide dirt roads with overhead pantographs for the trackless trolleys, and four excellent snapshot photographs of the trolleybuses themselves. A rare photograph of Monheim-Langenfeld trackless trolley concludes the tour of German cities. [Some of Germany's trolleybuses extended beyond city borders. In North Rhine-Westphalia, the Monheim-Langenfeld, for example, had an overland route that connected Monheim am Rhein to the east railway station at Langenfeld in Rhineland. It was in operation from 31 May 1904 to 5 November 1908 and was 4,5 km long.] In Brussels the horse-drawn tram appears to be what was mostly in use, presenting a rare photograph of a simple and elegant Belgian style; second to privately owned horse-drawn carriages. One image shows a trolley on tracks. [The first horse-drawn trams were introduced in Brussels in 1869, running from the Porte de Namur to the Bois de la Cambre. The first electric tramway came to Brussels in 1894.] J. R. Wilson was a member of the Manchester Transport Committee, for the City of Manchester. The use of trackless cars was approved by the Transport Committee in 1908, however, long-lasting disagreements between the Committee and City Council resulted in excessive delay, until finally in 1935 attention once again turned to the trolleybus. The final decision to completely abandon the tram system in favour of trolley buses and motor buses was taken on 7 July 1937. (Between 1901 and 1949 Manchester Corporation Tramways was the municipal operator of electric tram services in Manchester, known as Manchester Corporation Transport Department after 1929). In Greater Manchester, it was the Ashton-Under-Lyne Corporation which managed to introduce the first trackless trolleybus system officially opening 26 February 1925. In 1909 a deputation from Leeds also inspected the trolleybus system at Mulhausen, one which incorporated a single boom, the design of Max Schiemann. They went on to Milan and Viennato observe different systems. By contrast the first British trolleybus, an R.E.T. demonstrated at Hendon on 25 September 1909, used both a trolley base and trolley head of great complexity and weight. Said to be based upon the Schiemann system it incorporated a pair of trolley booms turning together upon a sort of turntable base, and linked at the top by another turntable carrying a trolley running under the pair of wires. For safety reasons, there was accommodation for third wire running at the Hendon trials. Edward Munro, Chief Engineer for the Railless Company, obtained a patent, No.764, on 12th January 1909, that comprised a self-aligning sprung base, a single boom and a double under-running trolleyhead, very different to that which famously was shown to the press a year later in MET's Hendon depot. Munro was still designing trolleybuses in the 1920's. Leeds and Bradford became the first cities to put trolleybuses into service in Great Britain on 20 June 1911. There were 50 trolleybus systems in the UK, London's being the largest. By the time trolleybuses arrived in Britain in 1911, the Schiemann system was well established and was the most common, although the Cédès-Stoll (Mercédès-Électrique-Stoll) system was tried in West Ham (in 1912) and in Keighley (in 1913). The father of the trolleybus is usually said to be Werner Von Siemens, because of his experiments in the Berlin suburb of Halense, between Charlottenburg and Spandau Bock (Berlin) for six weeks beginning 29 April 1882. This used a trolley or "contaktwagen" running on top of a pair of wires in horizontal configuration. "At a later stage an under-roller contact, on the lines of those used to-day, was introduced" (Transport World 5-12-1953). A pair of wires closely spaced in a horizontal plane are liable to make contact in high winds. This was avoided by placing the wires in a vertical plane, and I think Siemens experimented with this. The main disadvantage is that unless the wires are erected with precisely the same tension and the same amount of sag the trolley will not make contact with both. The Electromote was the world's first vehicle run like a trolleybus, which was first presented to the public on April 29, 1882, by its inventor Dr. Ernst Werner von Siemens in Halensee, a suburb of Berlin, Germany.. Very Good.

1908. STEREO-TRAVEL CO. Palestine. Illustrated with 100 stereo-graphic views on stiff cardboard with printed captions. Housed in original red cloth box mimicking two volumes, spines lettered in gilt. [Corona, NY]: Stereo-Travel Co, 1908. This scarce travel album offers 100 stereoviews of Palestine and surrounding areas showing cities, towns and villages; daily life and occupations in urban and agricultural settings; prominent monuments and landmarks; and archaeological sites and ancient buildings. Cities featured include Haifa, Baalbek (Syria), Hebron, Gaza, Acre, Bethany, Damascus and Jerusalem. Plethora of various Biblical (both Old & New Testament) sites are featured including Jacob's well, Garden of Gethsemane, Wailing Place, the Sixth Station on the Via Dolorosa, Tomb of the Kings, Shiloh the resting place of the Ark, Rachel's tomb, etc. Apart from the numerous Biblical sites are views of daily life - a third-class rail car, market scenes, private homes, a mosque, a wedding procession, a Bedouin chief, herders of various animals and a view of a group of lepers (all women). The Stereo Travel Company was a small company on Long Island, NY, that produced mostly boxed sets. They were a 'late' stereoview publisher, issuing the majority of their views after 1905. Although their principle output was of American views, they also ventured abroad as here. Stereoviews in fine condition, some minor wear to "spine" of box. Accompanied by a viewer.

        My African Journey

London: Hodder and Stoughton,, 1908. With Sixty-One Illustrations from Photographs by the Author and Lieutenant-Colonel Gordon Wilson, and Three Maps. Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spine gilt, titles and pictorial decoration to front board in black, blue, and grey. 16 pages of advertisements. Photographic frontispiece, 50 photographic plates, and 3 maps of which one is folding. With small light green bookseller's ticket to front pastedown. Spine lightly sunned, front free endpaper slightly tanned, a small dampstain to rear pastedown. Otherwise an excellent and bright copy. First edition. My African Journey was the first book to derive purely from Churchill's journalism, as distinct from his work as a war correspondent. Before embarking he signed an extremely lucrative contract for the publication of a series of articles in The Strand, and for further publication in book form. What Churchill was offered is impressive testimony to his perceived drawing power, at £750 for five contributions he was receiving "more than Kipling, whom The Strand were paying £90 for his short stories; more than W. W. Jacobs, whose rate at the time was £110 for a story" (Pound, The Strand Magazine).

        Kings and the Cats, The

1908. first edition. Cats in Irish Folklore[WAIN, Louis, Illustrator]. HANNON, John. The Kings and the Cats. Munster Fairy Tales for Young & Old. London: Burns & Oates, Ltd., 1908.First edition. Quarto (9 7/16 x 6 3/4 inches; 240 x 171 mm.). xiv, 78 pp. Including monotone frontispiece and ten full-page monotone plates. Publishers red cloth, front cover ruled and lettered in gilt, spine lettered in gilt, plain endpapers. spine ends a little worn, slight staining to upper cover and light marginal foxing, otherwise an excellent copy of this extremely unusual Louis Wain title."Once upon a time there were two kings in Ireland, the King of the South and the King of the North. They were great kings entirely, and they were always going to battle with their soldiers to see which of them was the best man. For seven years at a time they fought like cats, and for seven years at a time they fought like dogs, and neither of them could win at all, they were each of them so strong. There was a wise old woman of Wicklow Hills who was making good pishogues (white witchcraft) all this time in hare cave near the middle part of Ireland…" The Kings and the Cats, and the Wise Old Woman of the Wicklow Hills, pp. 11-31.This is a fascinating little book with very unusual and atypical drawings by Louis Wain. The frontispiece The Wise Old Woman of the Wicklow Hills depicts a witch looking over her cauldron whilst two cats, one black and one white, look on… is at first glance more in the style of the Victorian artist, Sidney Sime. In fact throughout this volume only one of the eleven illustrations Little Fiss and the Wicked Enchanted Bull (facing p. 40) is remotely similar to the Louis Wain that we all love, admire and enjoy. The kingdom of Munster is in the South of Ireland with Limerick in the north and Cork in the south.Dale, 93

Describes Kármán's pioneering experiments with to so-called triaxial testing in which a short, cylindrical specimen is loaded axially. This method - because of the simplicity of the equipment and the convenient preparation of specimens - is widely used in experimental rock mechanics testing in laboratory to characterize deformation and strength behaviours under in-situ stress states. [Kwasniewski, Marek: True Triaxial Testing of Rocks. ORC Press, 2012.; Paterson, M. S. - Wong, Teng-fong: Experimental Rock Deformation - The Brittle Field. Springer, 2005.] with: Kármán, Th[eodore]. v[on]. Ueber die Formänderung dünnwandiger Rohre, inbesondere federnder Ausgleichrohre. Von Dr. -- in Göttingen. Julius Springer (A. W. Schade). 6 p. Offprint. With numerous text illustrations and diagrams. Text in German. This work of Kármán is dealing with the stability of (Kármán's) vortex streets, a phenomena that he described the same year and later it has been named after him. [Lamb, H.: Hydrodynamics, 1959.] Theodore (Tódor) von Kármán (1881-1963) was a Hungarian-American physicist, mathematician, aerospace engineer. He achieved key advances in aerodynamics, mainly in the field of supersonic and hypersonic airflow characterization. Kármán studied engineering in Budapest, later he became assistant in hydraulics at the same University. His research at this time was on fluids and on the compression of structures which had wide ranging applications. In 1906 Kármán left Budapest to study at Göttingen, where he met with Felix Christian Klein, David Hilbert and Ludwig Prandtl. In 1908 his interest turned to aeronautics after watching pioneering aviation flights in Paris. In 1913 accepted a post as director of the Aeronautical Institute at Aachen University. During WWI he served in the Austro-Hungarian army, where he worked on a design of military aircraft and a helicopter. In 1930 Kármán emigrated to the United States and accepted the directorship of the Guggenheim Aeronautical Laboratory at California Institute of Technology. In 1933 Kármán found the U. S. Institute of Aeronautical Sciences, and continued his researches on fluid mechanics, turbulence theory and supersonic flight. In 1944 United States Government set up the Jet Propulsion Laboratory for rocket researches with von Kármán as director. He resigned in 1949, but remained advisor for the United States Air Force and the NASA. In 1963 he received the first Nation Medal of Science by President John F. Kennedy "for his leadership in the science and engineering basic to aeronautics; for his effective teaching and related contributions in many fields of mechanics, for his distinguished counsel to the Armed Services, and for his promoting international cooperation in science and engineering".
