London: Published for the Florence Press by Chatto and Windus, 1908. No. 10 of 12 COPIES ON VELLUM, of which 10 were for sale (and 500 copies on paper) n. Hardcover. 292 x 197 mm (11 1/2 x 7 3/4"). 4 p.l., 103, [1] pp., [2] leaves (the last blank). No. 10 of 12 COPIES ON VELLUM, of which 10 were for sale (and 500 copies on paper). Original flexible vellum, gilt titling on upper cover and flat spine, green silk ties. With original (lightly soiled and faded) gray cloth portfolio (for additional suite of plates); both housed in a (slightly worn) fleece-lined red cloth drop-back box with morocco label. With woodcut device on title page and 20 color plates by Keith Henderson and Norman Wilkinson, all mounted on gray stock and protected by captioned tissue guards. WITH AN ADDITIONAL SUITE OF PLATES loose in portfolio (as issued), all mounted and with tissue guards. Tomkinson, p. 85; Ransom, p. 278. AN ESPECIALLY FINE COPY--unusually clean and bright inside and out (without the almost inevitable darkening to vellum leaves and the splaying that comes with flexible vellum bindings). This is a luxurious vellum copy of the first work printed at the Florence Press. Founded in 1908 by the London publishers Chatto & Windus and operated by Philip Lee Warner, the press had as its expressed intention the production of "beautiful books in the choicest types . . . in larger editions, and at [lower] cost than [was] usual with such monuments of typography as the issues of the Kelmscott [and other] presses." Florence books are readily distinguishable by their special type, designed by Herbert P. Horne after 15th century Italian faces that are elegant, simple, and easily readable. The text here is Chaucer's translation of the lengthy (21,000 lines-long) 13th century French allegorical dream vision, "Roman de la Rose," written largely by Jean de Meun. In it, a young lover dreams of Cupid, who gives him advice on winning the lady he desires, symbolized by a rose. A satire on courtly love controversial for its sensuality, the work was one of the most important literary texts of the Medieval period--Chaucer was greatly influenced by it, and incunabular printers perpetuated its popularity with a number of 15th century printings. This vellum version of the Florence Press "Romaunt" appears generally to invite foxing, as the three copies listed in ABPC since 1975 are all described as foxed. Our copy is happily only minimally affected.

        Wind in the Willows

1908. GRAHAME, Kenneth. The Wind in the Willows.London: Methuen, (1908).First edition of the beloved children?'s novel, which author A.A. Milne once referred to as a ?"household book,?" ?"one of the classic read-aloud books that should not be missed by any family?" (Silvey)."Unquestionable is the permanence, as an inspired and characteristically English contribution to children's literature, of Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows… one of the most endearing books ever written for children… Part of the secret success of the book is that its appeal is ageless and parents never tire of reading it aloud. Like all great books it is inexhaustible" (Eyre, 62). Grahame created his classic as a series of bedtime stories for his four-year-old son Alastair, who was known as Mouse; yet it also became "in many respects an elegy for the old idyllic English rural life which Grahame could now see was passing away forever" (Carpenter & Prichard, 218). In a letter to Theodore Roosevelt, Grahame described the book as "an expression of the very simplest of joys of life as lived by the simplest beings." C.S. Lewis praised it as "a perfect example of the kind of story which can express things without explaining them" (Carpenter, 168).Pierpont Morgan Children's Literature 269.New front free endpaper, interior generally quite clean, coloring to cloth, minor spotting to rear board, gilt bright.         [Broadside]: Votes for Women Souvenir Official Programme of the Great Demonstration Hyde Park, Sunday June 21

London: Mr. S. Burgess. [1908]. Crepe paper. Measuring approximately 15" x 14.5". Printed in purple, green, and black with a central map showing procession routes and speaker's platforms, surrounded by portraits of 20 suffragettes with a border of colored violets. Very good with creases, a couple small tears and a couple minor spots. A souvenir program for the first large-scale meeting of the Women's Social and Political Union, which has become know as the Women's Sunday." Early in 1908 Prime Minister Herbert Asquith reported he would drop his opposition to women's suffrage if it could be demonstrated that enough women wanted the vote. In response, Emmeline Pankhurst and other activists organized this Great Demonstration which grew to include 250,000 people, seven separate processions, and 80 speakers on 20 different platforms. It was the largest mass meeting on London's history and the earliest major use of the new suffrage colors: purple, green, and white. This broadside was one of the first produced by Mrs. S. Burgess of London, who created items for various historical and period events. Burgess essentially reused the design twice more for the 1909 March to the House of Commons, where suffragettes smash Whitehall's office windows after Asquith refused to see them, and again for the 1911 Suffrage Coronation Demonstration. "According to Kenneth Florey, author of Women's Suffrage Memorabilia: The WSPU has mixed feeling about Burgess's unauthorized souvenir described as the "Official Programme of the Great Demonstration" but acknowledges their importance of a tangible memento for suffrage supporters. Rare. OCLC locates one copy at the Library of Congress. .

Op. 52]. Tristesse au jardin (Laurent Tailhade). Autograph musical manuscript signed

      - The complete manuscript of the unpublished original version for voice and piano, with some signficant differences from the later version for piano and orchestra (1908), first published (in piano reduction) by A. Zunz Mathot in 1910. The autograph of the orchestral version is at the Bibliothèque nationale de France. On March 13, 1909 the Société Nationale de Musique presented a program of eight orchestral works, all of which were being heard for the first time. Of Tristesse, the fifth work, Ravel opined: "Amid all this, Schmitt seemed like an intruder, with his noble inspiration and musical line, his sumptuous and delicate orchestration: everything that the others lacked. " (Letter to Cipa Godebski, dated March 14, 1909). Ravel and Schmitt were lifelong friends. Orenstein, "A Ravel Reader," 103-104.The original dedicatee, Marguerite de Saint- Marceaux (1850-1930; née Jourdain), was the wife of the sculptor René de Saint-Marceaux, and hostess of a famed Parisian music salon frequented by Ravel, Debussy, and other composers. Schmitt dedicated the published version of Tristesse to Madame Jane Engel-Bathori (1877-1970), a noted French mezzo-soprano. "In a time when many composers embraced Impressionism, [Schmitt's] music, albeit influenced by Debussy, was admired for its energy, dynamism, grandeur, and virility, for its union of French clarity and German strength. Schmitt was considered a pioneer during his lifetime, rejected by some and embraced by others for a style that influenced and helped prepare for later innovations by Stravinsky, Ravel, Honegger and Roussel." Jann Pasler and Jerry Rife in Grove Music Online. Folio (ca. 350 x 267 mm.). Half dark red morocco with marbled boards, "Florent Schmitt - Manuscrit" gilt to spine, marbled endpapers. [1] title, [2]-[14] manuscript music numbered I-XI, with pp. X-XI repeated, and X-bis crossed out. Notated in black and purple ink on 20-stave paper with "H. Lard Esnault Ed. Bellamy Sr. Paris" blindstamped at inner margins. Set for voice and piano: "Le doux rêve que tu nias, je l'ai su retrouver parmi les lis et les pétunias. Voici que par les allées meurent les blanches azalées." With text by the French satirical poet, Laurent Tailhade (1854- 1919), excerpted from "Vitraux" in Poèmes élégiaques (1907). First page of music with Schmitt's autograph signature and dedication "à Madame de Saint-Marceaux." Page XI-bis initialed "F.P." and dated "1er au 2 mars [18]97 à une heure vague de la nuit." Occasional erasures and corrections, most often in purple ink, in the composer's hand. Each page guarded at inner margin; occasional light soiling, staining, and browning to edges; final measure of p. II slightly blurred at "diminuez"; dedication partially erased. An attractive manuscript. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

EDITIONS PLON, 1908-1931 - L’ESPAGNE ET NAPOLEON 1804 - 1814 Par Geoffroy de GRANDMAISON EDITIONS PLON, 1908-1931 COMPLET EN 3 VOLUMES FORMAT IN-8, BROCHES TOME 1: 1804-1809. XIII+520 PAGES TOME 2: 1809-1811. VII +370 PAGES TOME 3: 1812-1814. V+427 PAGES TABLES ALPHABETIQUES. BIBLIOGRAPHIE.

        Anne of Green Gables

1908. MONTGOMERY, L.M.Anne of Green Gables.Boston: L.C. Page, 1908.First edition, first issue, of Montgomery?'s first novel, illustrated with eight plates by M.A. and W.A.J. Claus. A most desirable copy of this scarce children?'s classic. A lovely very nearly fine copy, exceptional in this condition. The story of the red-haired orphan Anne Shirley and the elderly brother and sister who adopt her ?"is the most popular and enduring of a host of girls?' stories published in the United States and Canada in the first years of the 20th century?" (Carpenter & Pritchard, 25-26). ?"Montgomery began writing about Anne as a serial for a Sunday school periodical in the spring of 1904. The character became so real that she eventually decided to develop the idea into a full novel. Much as would later with readers, Anne took hold of her creator, developing into a feisty, imaginative little being who demanded to be noticed and loved?" (Keeline, 41). The novel was completed in 1905, but was rejected by four major American publishing houses, and it was not until 1907 that Montgomery found a publisher. The best seller that would make the remote Canadian province of Prince Edward Island known around the globe was not to be published in Montgomery?'s native Canada until 1942, the year Montgomery died.Montgomery?'s ?"mother died when she was two, and she was sent to live with her maternal grandparents in their farmhouse. In character she seems to have much resembled her heroine Anne. She became a teacher, but gave it up to look after her widowed grandmother?" (Carpenter & Pritchard, 356). ?"By age 21 she was earning her living in the thriving periodical market of turn-of-the-century North America. International acclaim came in 1908 with the publication of her first novel, Anne of Green Gables, which instantly became-and remains-a best seller… there is energy of another type that animates Montgomery?'s books, which retain a strong hold on adult readers. It is the energy of social critique, and it operates just below the surface of many of her novels. Anne and Emily, her two best-known and best-developed heroines, may fulfill their womanly duty by marrying the saccharine-sweet boy next door, but not before each voices loud and angry criticisms of the way in which girls, orphans, and other disempowered members of society are ignored and trivialized?" (Silvey, 465-66).Keeline, 41-43. Peter Parley to Penrod, 124.Occasional light foxing, a few corners creased. Marginal paper restoration to title page. Cloth exceptionally nice with only very light rubbing to spine, slightest soiling. Only minor rubbing to mounted cover illustration. A lovely copy in very nearly fine condition. A detailed and enthralling history of a scientific expedition into Africa from 1904-1907 that ended with death for two of the three party leaders. The publishing of this book was Alexander’s monument to his fallen comrades "who lie in the earth too far away for many to read the records over their graves." The expedition covered 5,000 miles almost entirely by water, a remarkable achievement in its day. The survivors suffered countless ordeals including disease, hunger, and harsh weather conditions. The stories include meetings with different tribes, cannibalism, encounters with animals, slavery, elephant hunting and descriptions of local geography. The numerous photographs complement the account, with their variety and clarity in execution. A fascinating account. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Also Sprach Zarathustra

Leipzig: Insel-Verlag,, 1908. Folio. Original vellum with yapp edges, gilt lettered and decorated spine, large gilt motif on front cover, top edges gilt, uncut. Double-page ornamental title, printed title with vignette, each section with separate title, head and tail-pieces, all printed in deep purple and gold, after designs by Henry van der Velde, text printed in black and gold, type designed in 1900 by G. Lemmen. Short split to front joint, one or two marks to covers, customary offsetting or show-through in places (due to heavy inking), slight peripheral toning at head of leaves, a touch of foxing in places (heavier on pp. 129-30) but an excellent, bright copy. First and limited edition of 530 numbered copies (100 bound in leather, 430 in vellum), this being number 398. Scarce in both library holdings and commerce: Copac records only 2 copies in British and Irish institutional libraries (British Library, V&A), OCLC adding only 16 copies worldwide. It is one of the most important books in the development of the Art Nouveau style, designed by the Belgian pioneer Henry van de Velde (1863-1957), considered to be the "creator and theoretical founder of Art Nouveau" (Madsen, The Art Nouveau Style, 2002, p. 186). "During his time in Weimar, van de Velde produced one of his most esteemed graphic works, an edition of Also Sparch Zarathustra by the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900)... Van de Velde's edtion of Zarathustra represents the theory of the Gesamtkunstwerk, or total work of art, on a small scale. He attempted to harmonize every aspect of the book, including its ink, illustrations, and typography. The dense patterns on the cover surely must have been influenced by William Morris's Kelmscott Press, which tended toward similarly tightly packed compositions. Furthermore, van de Velde's aesthetic philosophy, emphasizing the powerful vision of an individual creator, was heavily influenced by Nietzsche's own writings on art" (Stephen J. Eskilson, Graphic Design: A New History, 2012, pp. 101-02). This is perhaps the most beautiful edition of Nietzsche's masterpiece.

        The Works

London: Methuen & Co,, 1908?-22. 15 volumes, octavo (214 x 145 mm). Recent green morocco, titles and decoration to spines gilt, roll to boards gilt, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, others untrimmed. An excellent set. First collected edition of Wilde's works, limited to 1,000 sets on handmade paper. The texts were mostly taken from the last editions to be supervised by the author. Copyright in The Picture of Dorian Gray was held by Charles Carrington, so that volume alone appears with his Paris imprint. In 1922 Methuen announced the discovery of a new play by Wilde, For Love of the King: a Burmese Masque, and published it as a pendant volume to the original 14-volume set. The play was denounced by Wilde's bibliographer Christopher Millard, and, although Methuen won a court case against him, the work is generally accepted to be a forgery by Mabel Wodehouse Pearse, née Cosgrove.

Sehr selten komplett angeboten.

        My African Journey

London: Hodder and Stoughton,, 1908. With Sixty-One Illustrations from Photographs by the Author and Lieutenant-Colonel Gordon Wilson, and Three Maps. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, titles and pictorial decoration to front board in black, blue, and grey. 16 pages of advertisements. Photographic frontispiece, 48 photographic plates, and 3 maps of which one is folding. Bookseller's ticket and bookplate to front pastedown. Spine faded and slightly rolled, contents foxed. A very good copy. First edition. My African Journey was the first book to derive purely from Churchill's journalism, as distinct from his work as a war correspondent. Before embarking he signed an extremely lucrative contract for the publication of a series of articles in The Strand, and for further publication in book form. What Churchill was offered is impressive testimony to his perceived drawing power, at £750 for five contributions he was receiving "more than Kipling, whom The Strand were paying £90 for his short stories; more than W. W. Jacobs, whose rate at the time was £110 for a story" (Pound, The Strand Magazine).
