THE NAVY GIRL, Class Of 1911

      C. Allan GIlbert 1908 - Original artwork, pastel on paper/stock. Image: 18 1/2" x 26"; frame:24" x 33". Signed in graphite, and dated. In mid-20th century wood frame, with acrylic glaze. Dominant colors are blue, brown, gold, flesh, white and sky blue. Shows an art nouveau woman, in naval overcoat, in profile, with the navy symbols of anchors and propeller behind her. The propeller has written on its blades " '11, USNA". An eagle sits atop the symbol. *** Charles Allan Gilbert (1873-1929) was a well-known illustrator, perhaps best known for his early work titled ALL IS VANITY, a double image of a woman admiring herself in a mirror, which, when viewed from a distance appears to be a skull. Gilbert drew VANITY as an 18 year old art student, eventually selling it 10 years later in 1902, to LIFE. He then was an established artist, drawing covers for various magazines, like LADIES HOME JOURNAL, etc. This work, THE NAVY GIRL, was used by the US Naval Academy's cadets for their class of 1911 as a Christmas card.         THE IRON HEEL.

Girard, Kansas: Appeal to Reason, 1908. First edition thus. Wear to spine ends, mended tear at center of spine, covers clean and cover design bright, clean text. Original dark blue pictorial cloth decorated in light blue and gilt, octavo, xiv, [1], 354 pp. + 4 pages ads at rear. Binding and cover design is the same as the Macmillan first edition, except for the absence of any publisher name at foot of spine. Title page is a cancel, with "1908 / APPEAL TO REASON / Girard, Kansas" at foot of title page (instead of Macmillan, 1908 imprint), copyright page (verso) is identical to the Macmillan first printing with "Published February, 1908" in publishing line and Norwood Press, etc. at bottom of page. One of Jack London's darkest tales, a fictional account of the bloody end of American democracy. This the rare "Appeal to Reason" edition. London had offered "Appeal," a successful left wing weekly newspaper published in Girard, Kansas, the opportunity to publish The Iron Heel serially, though this did not transpire. London also extended an open offer to "Appeal" granting them permission to publish The Iron Heel free of charge "in any way they see fit." (see The Letters of Jack London, Stanford, 1988, pp. 660, 683, 751-2). This edition not noted in BAL. SIsson & Martens p. 123 (note); Woodbridge 62 (note).

The Writings of George Eliot, Together with the Life by J.W. Cross; WITH: autograph letter signed by George Eliot as M.E. Lewes

Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1908. Twenty-five octavo volumes, contemporary full blue morocco gilt, boards triple-ruled in gilt, raised bands, spines lettered in gilt, pale blue endpapers, blue silk ribbon markers, top edges gilt, other edges uncut and partially unopened. Title pages printed in red and black. Illustrated with photogravures throughout text, many in color. Four-page ALS by George Eliot dated April 19, 1873 tipped into Volume I. Deluxe illustrated large-paper edition of George Eliot's writings, number 10 of 750 copies, handsomely bound at the Riverside Press. This set includes all of Eliot's major works, including Scenes of Clerical Life, Adam Bede, The Mill on the Floss, Silas Marner, Romola, Daniel Deronda, and Middlemarch: ?"If we had a keen vision and feeling of all ordinary human life, it would be like hearing the grass grow and the squirrel's heart beat, and we should die of that roar which lies on the other side of silence. As it is, the quickest of us walk about well wadded with stupidity.?" Also included are Eliot?'s poetry, essays, letters, and journals, as well as a short life of the author. Tipped into the first volume is a four-page 1873 letter, written by George Eliot as M.E. Lewes on her house stationery at The Priory, Regent's Park. Eliot writes on behalf of herself and her longtime companion, George Henry Lewes, seeking a country house for the fall: ?"The search for a house is always a difficulty, the precise thing one needs seeming of course to be the rarest kind. . . . We desire perfect seclusion & yet nearness to a town -- what is our house, in fact, only that our scale would be much smaller.?" The couple would eventually let a house called Blackbrook in Kent, which despite its idyllic location proved inconvenient. They reluctantly returned to London that fall: ?"In the country, the days have broad spaces, and the very stillness seems to give a delightful roominess to the hours.?" A fine set, including a handwritten letter on one of the great domestic themes by one of the great domestic novelists.

Les Robes de Paul Poiret racontées par Paul Iribe.

Paris Paul Poiret 1908 - First edition, limited to 250 copies on Holland paper. 4to (30 x 33 cm), limitation page, 11 leaves with pochoir coloured illustrations by Paul Iribe, including 2 folding and 1 present twice (no. 7), publisher's beige paper boards, title to upper cover in red enclosed by black outlined oval medallion and rose garlands; glacine wrapper. Slight damage to tail of front joint and a few nicks and offsetting to fore-edge of final leaf, else an excellent copy. A handsomely produced publicity album from pioneering Parisian fashion house. Paul Poiret (1879–1944) a leading French fashion designer of the early 20th century, commissioned Paul Iribe (1883-1935), one of the pioneers of Art Deco, to design an album showcasing the innovative designs in his collection. The Japanese inspired prints with their fauvist colours and models in smiling poses caused a stir on two counts. Firstly, for going against the stiff formal attitudes which were the norm in fashion, but more so for the high waist and relaxed line of the dresses, which denounced the accepted corseted look. 'A copy was sent to each European sovereign, bearing, after the flyleaf, a personal, handsomely printed dedication. All of them were well received and much appreciated, with the sole exception of the one sent to Her Majesty the Queen of England, which was returned to me with a letter from a lady in waiting, asking me to refrain in the future from any communication of this kind. I never understood why they took it badly.' (Paul Poiret, En habillant l'époque, Paris, Grasset, 1986, p. 69) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        My African Journey

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1908. First edition, only printing. Hardcover. This is the British first edition, only printing of My African Journey, Churchill's travelogue on Britain's possessions in East Africa, written while he was serving as Undersecretary of State for the Colonies. This book is notable, among other things, for being the only one of his many books to contain photographs apparently taken by the author. In the summer of 1907 Churchill left England for five months, making his way after working stops in southern Europe to Africa for "a tour of the east African domains." In early November, Churchill would kill a rhinoceros, the basis of the striking illustration on the front cover of the British first edition of his eventual book. By now a seasoned and financially shrewd author, Churchill arranged to profit doubly from the trip, first by serializing articles in Strand Magazine and then by publishing a book based substantially upon them. In November 1908 Hodder and Stoughton published My African Journey as a book, which was a substantial 10,000 words longer than the serialized articles. The British first edition is striking, with a vivid red binding and a prominent front cover bearing a woodcut illustration in blue, grey, and black of Churchill with his bagged white rhinoceros. The red cloth spine proved exceptionally vulnerable to sunning and the lovely books seem to have attracted handling, making wear and soiling the norm. Spotting is also endemic. This copy is in near very good overall condition, structurally sound and complete with cosmetic blemishes. The binding is notably square and tight with nicely rounded spine. The boards are particularly bright and clean with only light wear. What detracts from the external appearance is a soiled and stained spine with a shallow strip loss at the spine head. Nonetheless, spine gilt remains bright. The contents are complete; all illustrations and maps remain intact. Of note, the map at page 2 is tipped in as a folding map. Most first edition copies of My African Journey we have examined feature this as a tipped in map on a single, unfolded page. This folding map is exactly the same in content and scale as maps in other first edition copies, the difference being that blank one inch margins at the top and bottom of this particular map were left untrimmed after printing, and thus it was tipped into this copy with the top two inches folded over. The contents show modest, intermittent spotting and age-toning. The sole previous ownership mark is a decorative bookplate affixed to the recto of the blank sheet preceding the half title. Lewis Waller as Captain James Wynnegate. Original pencil drawing.

[1908] 1908 - Pencil on card, signed; signs of adhesive on margins. 27 x 38cm. Mounted on cream card. Published in the Illustrated London News, January 1908. Frank Haviland (not to be confused with cubist painter and friend of Picasso, Frank Burty Haviland) was a regular contributor to the Illustrated London News, largely drawing portraits from the London theatres. William Waller Lewis, 1860-1915, stage name Lewis Waller, was an English actor and stage manager best known for his roles in swashbuckling romances. Despite being an accomplished Shakespearian actor, Waller was often ridiculed for his more puerile roles and the antics of his travelling fan club known as the K.O.W., Keen on Waller. Captain James Wynnegate was the main character in A White Man produced at the Lyric Theatre in early 1908. Written by the American playwright Edwin Milton Royle, the play first appeared at Wallack?s Theatre on Broadway in 1905 under its original title The Squaw Man. The story is a tale of an Englishman who escapes to the Wild West of Montana under the alias Jim Carson. After various scrapes he marries and has a son by the daughter of an Indian Chief; there is no happy ever after. PLEASE NOTE: For customers within the UK and the EU, this item is subject to VAT. "But Moore also recognised that his early criticism of William James pragmatism can be aplied to the logical empiricist position. In connection with James, Moore had observed that where a proposition concerns the past, it may well be that we are in a situation in which a proposition and its negation are both unverifiable because there is now no evidence either way on the matter. But, he argued, it does not follow that we cannot now affirm that either the proposition or its negation is true . in which case it cannot be that thruth is verifiability - contrary both to James pragmatism and to logical empiricism."         A collection of 7 autograph letters from the famed baritone (and later tenor) to the noted tenor Leo Slezak (1873-1946).

      - August 6, 1908 2 pp. Oblong octavo. In black ink. On a card with the address "53 Rue de la Faisanderie" embossed at head. With autograph envelope postmarked Deauville, [August] 7l [1908] and Kramsach-Ache[n]rain [?]August, [19]08. In French (with translation). De Reszke has sent two scores to Slezak, in which he has marked the breaks "according to the traditions of the [?Paris] Opera." He (rightly) predicts that his pupil and successor will have a great international career. "I think a lot about your beautiful voice and your very artistic temperament ?- and I am certain that you will have a great success in your international career." Printed address crossed out and replaced with "Deauville - Villa Eole" in de Reszke's autograph. - April 4, 1909 2 pp. Oblong octavo. In black ink. On a card with "53 Rue de la Faisanderie" embossed at head. With autograph envelope postmarked [?]Paris, April 5, [19]09 and Vienna, April 7, [19]09. In Italian (with translation). De Reszke congratulations Slezak on his much deserved triumphs. He will write administrator Henry Higgins (1855- 1928) in order to secure the role of Otello for Slezak in an upcoming production at Covent Garden. He also mentions Marcella Sembrich (1858- 1935), a noted Polish soprano, and the composer Baron Frédéric d'Erlanger (1868-1943). "You can't imagine how happy and proud I am of your triumphs... all that has come [in your career] you merit by the sacrifice you have imposed upon yourself, and the true and hard work that you undertook with so much courage... Sembrich was also very kind to me. I will write immediately to Higgins for the debut in Otello. I'm afraid that d'Erlanger would like you to sing his opera first, but I will explain to Higgins that this would be a mistake on the Direction's part." - February 5, 1911 2 pp. Oblong octavo. In black ink. On card with "53 Rue de la Faisanderie" embossed at head. In Italian (with translation). De Reszke worries about Slezak's relationship with certain members of the Metropolitan Opera Company, including general manager, Giulio Gatti- Casazza (1869-1940), and star tenor Enrico Caruso (1873-1921). De Reszke notes the successes of some of his other students, including the American soprano, Lucille Marcel (1877-1921), whom he notes "is always with W." Marcel had just married the Viennese conductor Felix Weingartner (1863- 1942) in 1910, and it is to him that De Reszke probably refers here. "You are always in my thoughts and I was often telling myself 'who knows if [Giulio] Gatti-Casazza and this whole Italian group will try to harm you?' I see that I was not wrong... I didn't believe that Caruso could scheme at this point... I hope that you will not cause too much bad blood for yourself because it's not worth the pain and [your] health and the first thing... [Lucille] Marcel is always with W. She sang [...?] in Rome with sensational public success." - April 4, 1911 2 pp. Oblong octavo. In black ink. On card with "53 Rue de la Faisanderie" embossed at head. In Italian (with translation). De Reszke looks forward to seeing Slezak again after the latter's season has ended. He then passes judgment on two of the most prominent tenors of the day, his student Johannes Sembach (1881-1944) and Enrico Caruso (1873-1921). "It seems that Caruso has been very ill in the throat and remained for some weeks without singing; it was a punishment for the intrigues... Now I have the tenor [Johannes] Sembach from Dresden, whom the direction sent me for a year; his voice is good, pleasant, be he had no idea how to place the high notes, [and] for that reason he forced in a terrible way." According to the April 10, 1911 issue of Opera News, laryngitis and an "attack of the grip" forced Caruso to cancel engagements at the Metropolitan Opera and in Rome. - [?]June 29, 1911 1 page. On a postal card. Postmarked Deauville Calvados. In black ink. With photograph of the villa "Mon Rêve" in Bénerville to verso. In Italian (with translation). De Reszke will try to secure performances for Slezak. They will soon have the opportunity to meet. "I will write immediately to Warsaw to find out if someone can arrange a series of concerts for you. We will absolutely pass through Vienna towards the 12th or 13th to go to Poland, where I have many affairs to complete. So we will certainly see each other again." A subsequent letter dated September 23, 1911 indicates that De Reszke had, indeed, used his influence to arrange a series of performances for Slezak at the Imperial Theatre in Warsaw. - September 23, 1911 2 pp. of a bifolium. Octavo. In black ink on lined paper. In Italian (with translation). De Reszke helps Slezak negotiate terms for a series of performances at the Imperial Theater of Warsaw. He mentions the prominent Italian baritone, Mattia Battistini: an Otello featuring Slezak and Battistini (as Otello and Iago, respectively) would be beautiful indeed. "The Direction of the Imperial Theater of Warsaw will be extremely happy to offer you some performances; but there is the practice that the artist or his representative establish a relationship with them [i.e. the Direction]. You write, therefore, that based on my proposition, you offer your services from the 31st to the 11th of December, that you want to sing Aida, Otello, or some other arrangements, and that you ask for a fee that is, naturally, very very minimal, as a dispensation from your usual [fees], but only for the pleasure of making yourself known in Warsaw. [Mattia] Battistini will be there in December. It would be a beautiful Otello to give with you two." - July 16, 1921 3 pp. of a bifolium. Puy-de-Dôme. In black ink on mourning stationery. In French (with translation). A heart-wrenching letter from an old and dejected De Reszke to his favorite pupil. Aside from a slightly elevated arterial pressure, De Reszke is in good health; his singing and his students allow him to forget an "awful reality." He mentions the deaths of several people close to him, including his son; his brother, the great bass Edouard De Reszke; and his student Lucille Marcel, a prominent American soprano and third wife of conductor Felix Weingartner. He is happy about Slezak's frequent singing and "glorious voice," which "always resounds exultantly." "My two brothers and my son dead during this cursed war and I, the only Reszke, the last of my name, remain to sustain my poor wife who, inconsolable, languishes in a lamentable existence divided between tears and morphine." Some signs of wear but in very good condition overall. . Polish baritone, and later tenor, Jean de Reszke (1850-1925) was one of the most famous opera singers of the late nineteenth century. "His beautiful voice, fine musicianship and handsome appearance made him unsurpassed in the French repertory, as well as in the Wagner roles he sang with such distinction." Elizabeth Forbes in Grove Music Online. Leo Slezak (1873-1946) was a prominent Austrian-Czech tenor who "combined great warmth and brilliance of tone with clear enunciation and a most delicate use of mezza voce." After a hiatus of nine years, and a period of intensive study with Jean de Reszke, Slezak reappeared at Covent Garden to sing the title role in Verdi's Otello "with robust power and beauty of tone." Indeed, he became one of the most famous Otellos of his generation. Desmond Shawe-Taylor in Grove Music Online.

The Tempest, Act III, Scene 3 (Caliban: "Sounds and sweet airs that give delight & hurt not")

1908. Watercolor, pencil and ink on paper, signed "Edmund Dulac 08" (lower left), additionally inscribed on verso: "Sounds and sweet airs that give delight & hurt not. Act III Sc. III" and numbered 31. 15 x 9-7/8 in. Matted and framed. Watercolor, pencil and ink on paper, signed "Edmund Dulac 08" (lower left), additionally inscribed on verso: "Sounds and sweet airs that give delight & hurt not. Act III Sc. III" and numbered 31. 15 x 9-7/8 in. A beautiful Dulac watercolor, an idyllic waterside scene for Caliban's "Sounds and sweet airs that give delight and hurt not," from Dulac's second major gift book commission. The Dulac Tempest was issued as part of a projected series of Shakespeare illustrated by contemporary artists that was never completed. "Dulac can be considered a perfect illustrator for Shakespeare because of his tendency always to mix in with serious pictures some humorous ones, just as Shakespeare inserted scenes of comic relief between his serious ones ... Dulac shows sensitivity to the nuances of the sea with his beautiful greens and blues and patterns of surf and rocks" (Hughey). Dulac "showed greater human understanding as the illustrations moved beyond stage scenes and became mood pictures or tone poems ... Dulac's greater assurance in The Tempest was manifested in many beautifully observed scenes ... The publication of The Tempest in November 1908 was again timed to coincide with the Leicester Galleries' exhibition of the original watercolours, and both the art and book critics acclaimed his work, particularly his treatment of the sea" (White, Edmund Dulac, p. 36). Provenance: Countess of Lytton. Exhibited: London, Leicester Galleries, 1908. Literature: Shakespeare's Comedy of the Tempest (Hodder & Stoughton, 1908), p. 58; Hughey, Edmund Dulac: His Book Illustrations, no. 19
