        Ernst Heilemann: Kulturfortschritt (Originalzeichnung)

My African Journey, publisher's presentation copy of the first edition, only printing

Hodder and Stoughton, London 1908 - This is a presentation copy of the British first edition, only printing of My African Journey, Churchill's travelogue on Britain's possessions in East Africa, written while he was serving as Undersecretary of State for the Colonies. This copy is embossed in two lines on the upper right of the title page with the words "PRESENTATION | COPY." Churchill’s bibliographer, Ronald I. Cohen, cites 8,161 copies of the cloth-bound British first edition, of which 7870 were sold and "291 were distributed gratis." This copy is undoubtedly one of these 291. We have encountered only one other copy embossed thus, and that copy also bore an original publisher’s review slip, corroborating both early and gratis distribution. Condition is good - sound and original, but unlovely. The striking red cloth binding is square and tight with good spine color and only minor wear to extremities, but regrettably heavily soiled and stained on both covers and spine. The contents remain bright with a crisp feel. We find no previous ownership marks. Spotting, endemic to this edition, is very light, with only a few scattered spots within and almost none evident on the page edges. My African Journey is notable, among other things, for being the only one of Churchill many books to contain photographs apparently taken by the author. The 61 photographs of this edition were tipped in rather than bound, so copies should always be carefully checked to ensure the presence of all illustrations and maps. All are present here, as is the tissue cover at the frontispiece. Of note, the map at page 2 is tipped in as a folding map. The majority of first edition copies of My African Journey we have examined feature this as a tipped in map on a single, unfolded page. This folding map is exactly the same in content and scale as maps in other first edition copies, the difference being that blank one inch margins at the top and bottom of this particular map were left untrimmed after printing, and thus it was tipped into this copy with the top two inches folded over. Given presence of the folding map in a publisher’s presentation copy, we incline to attribute the folding map at p.2 to earlier bindings of the first and only printing. In the summer of 1907 Churchill left England for five months, making his way after working stops in southern Europe to Africa for "a tour of the east African domains." In early November, Churchill would kill a rhinoceros, the basis of the striking illustration on the front cover of the British first edition of his eventual book. By now a seasoned and financially shrewd author, Churchill arranged to profit doubly from the trip, first by serializing articles in The Strand Magazine and then by publishing a book based substantially upon them. In November 1908 Hodder and Stoughton published My African Journey as a book, which was a substantial 10,000 words longer than the serialized articles. The British first edition is striking, with a vivid red binding and a prominent front cover bearing a woodcut illustration in blue, grey, and black of Churchill with his bagged white rhinoceros. The red cloth spine proved exceptionally vulnerable to sunning and the lovely books seem to have attracted handling, making wear and soiling the norm. Spotting is also endemic. Bright and clean copies are scarce. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A27.1, Woods/ICS A12(aa), Langworth p.81 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Autograph letter signed ("Gertrude"). [Paris], "Rue de Fleurus", 27. XII. 1908.

1908. 8vo. 4 pp. on bifolium. To "my dear people", i. e. Hortense (Guggenheimer) Moses and her son Dickey: "Many thanks for the three Dickies and the papa and the mama. Seems to me Dickey looks a good deal like his papa Jakie [...] Please say Merry Christmas to him [...] and did he eat too much candy like aunty Gertrude [...] Oh Dickey, you are going but we are never too young to learn. Dickey, Dickey listen to the words as they tumble off your wise auntie's pen, never, no never when the Merry Christmas time comes round don't you ever eat too much sweet cake and sweet candy and above all [...] don't ever mix up such sweet cake and sweet candy with salt pickles. Dickey, a lady what never tells lies tells you that that's a bad way to do. She did it, her big brother did it [...]". - Stein refers to her older brother, Leo Stein, and to Hortense Guggenheimer Moses, the cousin of her close friend, Etta Cone (1870-1949), who with her sister Claribel, collected an important grouping of modern French art. Stein penned this letter about 6 years after her arrival from Baltimore to Paris where she established her renown salon [...]". - One short tear at center fold, otherwise in good condition, with holograph envelope.

Autograph letter signed to an unidentified male recipient

      - 2 pp. of a bifolium. Octavo. Dated Garmisch, July, 20, [19]08. On lined paper. In French (with translation). An important letter in which Strauss discusses the forthcoming Dresden, Berlin, and Monte Carlo premières of his opera, Elektra. ". Tell [Raoul Gunsbourgh] that I am sure to finish the score for Elektra by September, that everything will be printed by the beginning of December and that the French première at Monte Carlo can take place towards the end of February or the beginning of March. I myself will be able to conduct Elektra at Monte Carlo if all circumstances permit. I want to personally assist in the première of Elektra at Dresden (at the end of January). "Very slightly soiled; creased at folds. As promised, Strauss completed the score for Elektra on September 22, 1908. The opera premièred at the Dresden Hofoper on January 25, 1909, followed shortly thereafter by a performance in Berlin on February 15. Although publically announced in newspapers such as the New York Times, the Monte Carlo première appears not to have eventuated. The French language première of the opera was actually given by the Manhattan Opera Company on February 1, 1910; Strauss accorded the first American performance of Elektra to this fledgling company of Oscar Hammerstein's as something of an act of revenge upon the Metropolitan Opera for banning his previous opera, Salome. Raoul Gunsbourgh (1860-1955) was the longest-serving director of the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, his career there spanning almost six decades.

The Collected Works in Verse And Prose.

London: Chapman and Hall,, 1908. Imprinted At The Shakespeare Head Press Stratford-on-Avon. 8 volumes, octavo. Original quarter vellum, grey cloth boards, titles to upper boards and spines gilt, top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Frontis portrait to first volume. Light soiling and the odd stain to spines, trivial rubbing to the tips, otherwise an excellent set, sound and fresh. First collected edition, one of 250 first issues sets in the deluxe quarter vellum binding, with the publisher Chapman & Hall's imprint on the spines and title pages, from a total edition of 1,060 sets printed at the Shakesepare Head Press. As a production, this collected edition is regarded as a marvellous piece of publishing (Yeats himself was proud of it, remarking, "I think nobody of our time has had so fine an edition?I believe it will greatly strengthen my position"), collecting, with the poet's own selection and arrangement, a substantially complete corpus (poems, plays and prose) of his first canon of work, before the finding of his later voice. Sales were slow and the majority of the edition was later issued in a secondary, cheaper cloth binding. Sets like this in the primary deluxe binding are hard to come by. This set has the armorial bookplates in each volume of Thomas Evelyn Scott-Ellis (1880-1946), 8th Baron Howard de Walden, a British peer, collector of armour and heraldry, author (producing several plays under the pseudonym T. E. Ellis), and patron of the arts. In 1914 he funded the creation, by Augustus John, of the Crab Tree Club in London (clientelle including Jacob Epstein, Walter Sickert, Paul Nash, Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, Compton Mackenzie and Jean Rhys), and in that year was one of the people "blessed" in Wyndham Lewis's vorticist magazine Blast. In 1908, the year of this set's publication, Scott-Ellis participated in the first and only motor boat race at the London Olympics.

Hess/Wachter A 5. - Stark S. 189. Sprache: Deutsch

The Poetical Works of John Milton with a Life of the Author and Illustrations [Complete in Four Volumes]

      R. H. Hinkley Company - D. B. Updike at the Merrymount Press, Boston 1908 - Four volumes. Large octavo. Bound in full decorative pigskin, raised bands, stamped in blind, top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Sixteen illustrations. One of 555 numbered sets, printed by D.B. Updike at the Merrymount Press on handmade paper. Life of Milton by John Mitford. The title-page rubrication, border illustrations and decorations are relatively early work by W. A. Dwiggins. The illustrations are adapted from Flaxman. (Updike. Notes on the Merrymount Press (1975), p. 142.) Imprinted upon hand-made paper. Among the most handsome editions produced by Updike at The Merrymount Press. The Merrymount Press was a printing company, both scholarly and craftsmanlike, founded and run by Daniel Berkeley Updike in Boston, Massachusetts, and extant during the years 1893¿1941. It was perhaps the finest representative of the Arts and Crafts movement in American book arts, influenced by William Morris and founded "to do common work uncommonly well." Updike established his own studio in 1893, first with the idea of designing type fonts, but soon after as a printing company. He called it the Merrymount Press in honor of Mount Wollaston just south of Boston. In 1896, Updike commissioned font designer Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue to design the Merrymount font for an Altar Book for the Episcopal Church. In 1904 Herbert Horne designed Montallegro for him, and noted graphic artist and print designer Rudolph Ruzicka (1883¿1978) also produced designs for the Press. In 1896 Updike also purchased the Caslon face; other types employed included Scotch Roman, Janson, Mountjoye and Oxford. Merrymount Press was the first American firm to use the Times New Roman font. In 1899 the Merrymount Press printed Edith Wharton¿s novels for Charles Scribner's Sons, which firmly established the press as a going commercial concern. The Press's finest work is generally considered to be the Book of Common Prayer (1930) financed by J. Pierpont Morgan. Without decoration, except a typographic leaf, initial letters, and rubrication, it was an austere and handsome quarto. Updike estimated that Merrymount Press produced some 14,000 pieces of printing during its existence. Much of it was for the private collectors¿ market and limited-editions clubs, but it also printed Christmas cards, bookplates, and advertising ephemera, as well as work for publishers, libraries, churches, and other institutions. Most of the Merrymount Press archives are conserved in the Boston Athenaeum. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
