        Lord Randolph Churchill

London: Macmillan and Co. Limited,, 1906. 2 volumes, octavo. Original burgundy cloth, titles gilt to the spine with gilt rules, and to upper board with blind rules and the Marlborough crest gilt. Photogravure portrait frontispiece to each, 6 other photogravures in all, 7 other plates one of them coloured and 3 facsimiles, one folding, one double-page. Spines very slightly sunned and a touch crumpled head and tail, corners a little bumped, very pale browning and a scatter of foxing front, back and to fore-edges, otherwise an unusually clean and sharp set, the cloth retaining considerable gloss. First edition, first impression. Churchill's biography of his father was published on 2 January 1906 to "almost universal acclaim in the Press" (Churchill Winston S. Churchill II) the Sunday Times remarking on Churchill's "maturity of judgement, levelheadedness and discretion" and the Spectator praising his style: "He has chosen the grand manner... but the general effect is of dignity and ease." Churchill also received plaudits from a number of well-known political biographers, J. A. Spender, biographer of Campbell-Bannerman and Asquith, called it a "brilliant book", and W. F. Monypenny, author of the Life of Disraeli, remarked that "alike in style and architecture and for its spirit, grasp and insight the book seems to me truly admirable".

Lord Randolph Churchill, finely bound in full red morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe

London: Macmillan and Company, 1906. First edition, only printing. Full leather. This is a two-volume, first edition set of Winston Churchill?s biography of his father, Lord Randolph Churchill, finely bound in full red morocco goatskin by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. The elegant bindings feature hubbed and gilt ruled spines, each bearing the title and author, as well as the individual volume numbers. There are gilt rule borders on the covers, gilt rules on the binding edges, gilt page edges, and gilt ruled turn-ins framing striking, marbled endpapers. Even the gold, red, and black head and foot bands are executed with noteworthy skill and aesthetic effect. ?Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, London, England? is gilt-stamped on each lower front pastedown. This venerable firm, founded by Francis Sangorski and George Sutcliffe in 1901, became recognized as one of the leading bookbinders in London. Like Churchill himself, Sangorski & Sutcliffe endured the First World War, the Great Depression, the Second World War, and post-war austerity. This truly gorgeous example of the fine binder?s craft is a reminder to collectors that not all fine bindings are created equal. Nonetheless, it would seem that exceptional skill and craft do not equate to infallibility. The flaw that prevents our doubling or trebling the price of this set is a binding error. The illustrations for Volume I are inserted in Volume II at the page locations called for in Volume I, and vice versa with Volume II. Apart from this error, the set is truly fine. The bindings are square, clean, bright, tight, and supple with a few trivial blemishes but no appreciable wear. The contents are well-suited to the bindings ? notably crisp, bright, and clean with no previous ownership marks. The spotting endemic to the edition is virtually absent, appearing confined to a few spots scattered across the preliminary leaves of Volume II. The two-volume work concentrates on Lord Randolph's career in Parliament after 1880. Winston Churchill's father, Lord Randolph, died in January 1895 at age 45 following the spectacular collapse of both his health and political career. His son Winston was 20 years old. When he first contemplated writing his father's biography Winston Churchill was an itinerant soldier and war correspondent who had yet to write his first book. The son still dwelt very much in his father's shadow, both emotionally and in terms of the political career to which he already aspired. By the time the work was published in 1906, the young Winston Churchill already had half a dozen books to his credit and half a decade in Parliament. By 1906 Churchill had already left his father's political party, prevailed in the same political battle that had terminated his father's career, and was just two years from his first Cabinet post. Churchill was criticized by some reviewers for overplaying his father's accomplishments. Nonetheless, the work was well received both as a frank portrayal of Randolph's extremes and as a showcase for the son's literary talent. Please anticipate the possibility of additional shipping, depending on destination. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A17.1, Woods A8(a), Langworth p.69

        Lithograph inscribed

1906 - ROOSEVELT, Theodore. Lithograph inscribed. Boston: Charles E. Goodspeed, 1905. Single sheet, measuring approximately 18 by 24 inches. $8500.Exceptionally large, handsome bust-length etching of Teddy Roosevelt, number 91 of an unknown limitation signed by artist Sidney L. Smith, inscribed below the image to Boy Scout benefactor Charles D. Hart: "To Dr: Charles D. Hart with the regards of Theodore Roosevelt. April 8th 1906."This striking portrait of Teddy Roosevelt was originally etched by Sidney L. Smith and bears Smith's pencil signature in addition to Roosevelt's inscription. Notably, Smith was a preferred artist of the Roosevelt family and also designed Mrs. Roosevelt's personal bookplates (Cheney, et al., The Bookplate Booklet, 9). The inscribee, Charles D. Hart, was a Philadelphia physician. However, he was best known for the important contributions he made to the Boy Scouts. Hart was the President of the Philadelphia Council and the changes he made locally resonated nationally. He provided an endowment that included the property for the Hart Scout Reservation (Camp Hart), now part of the Musser Scout Reservation in Marlborough Township, Pennsylvania. Hart also formed the first troop of blind Boy Scouts, changing the public's idea of what scouts could be. Roosevelt was involved in the outdoor activities his entire life. He eventually became an honorary vice president of the Boy Scouts, though he was often at the same events as Hart prior to that, including ones recognizing the work of the Boy Scouts.Tiny corner repair not affecting image. A beautiful inscribed item. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Further Experiments on the Development of Peripheral Nerves

The American Journal of Anatomy, Vol. V, No. 2, Pages 121-131 May 31. PAMPHLET. First separate edition. Offprint. Original wrappers. ?The nerve center (ganglion cells) is shown to be the one necessary factor in the formation of the peripheral nerve. When it is removed from the body of the embryo the latter fails to develop. When it is transplanted to abnormal positions in the body of the embryos it then gives rise to nerves which may follow paths, where normally no nerves run, and likewise when the tissues surrounding the center are changed entirely, nerves proceeding from that center may develop as normally. The nerve is therefore a product of the ganglion cell? Ross Harrison. Small chip bottom edge of front cover. A very good copy. Rare offprint. * . Very Good. 1906.

In the Days of the Comet

1906 - WELLS, H.G. In the Days of the Comet. London: MacMillan, 1906. Octavo, original green cloth gilt. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $17,500.First edition, second issue (as always), first state, presentation copy humorously inscribed by H.G. Wells to Richard Gregory, his close friend and scientific advisor, "To dear old Griggalorums. From H.G."Wells was a devoted member of the Fabian society and a utopian socialist; his novels often explore potential utopias and dystopias of the future, and how they may be brought about. In the present work, "the wondrous change in human personality is brought about by the gases in a comet's tail, through which the Earth is fortunate enough to pass," a concept that has been adopted by numerous utopian societies in the years since this novel's pubication (Clute & Nicholls, 1314). Second issue, as usual (only one copy of the first issue is known: the British Library copy), first state, with integral title page. Without scarce original dust jacket. Currey, 419. Hammond B10. Inscribed to noted British scientist and Wells' lifelong friend Sir Richard Arman Gregory. In Wells' first work of fiction, he dedicated the work to Gregory as his "dearest friend." The two met while students at the Normal School of Science in South Kensington. They jointly authored a textbook, Honours Physiography, in 1891. Reportedly, Gregory was the one person with whom Wells never quarreled. A professor of astronomy, Gregory also possessed expertise in physics, chemistry and other disciplines; he wrote several textbooks and eventually assumed the editorship of the journal Nature, to which Wells frequently contributed. The author often turned to Gregory, and to the experts Gregory contacted on Wells' behalf, for insight and encouragement when writing his famous "scientific romances." After Wells' death, Gregory worked to establish the H.G. Wells Memorial to preserve public attention to his friend's body of work. Throughout his life Gregory was a passionate advocate for science"""It is necessary to believe in the holiness of scientific work," he once declared""and "an optimist about man's future" (Horrabin, in New Scientist, April 11, 1957).Interior fine, only very minor wear to cloth extremities, gilt bright. A nearly fine copy with a great association. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Il Tatuaggio

Napoli: Gennaro M. Priore, 1906. 8vo, 281 [2] pp, printed wraps. Complete with all 15 plates as called for, two of which are roughly hand-colored, each of which reproduces drawings of tattoos, and additional illustrations in the text. Inscribed by the author at first blank. Text in Italian. First edition of this important early study of tattoos and tattooing, written by a doctor and anthropologist who wrote often on criminology and was a follower of Lombroso. The 15 plates, all of which are present here, are beautifully drawn from life and are a rare and evocative record. The final plate is dedicated to tattoos of prostitutes and prints some of the most beautiful and unusual tattoos we've seen recorded from this period. OCLC locates only two holdings at the time of cataloguing. Wraps foxed, worn, and tidemarked along the spine. Professional paper repair to rear wrap and to a tear at final leaf. Good only, but complete and clean within. A fragile publication, and rare in any condition, especially inscribed.
