WITH FLASHLIGHT AND RIFLE: A Record of Hunting Adventures and of Studies in Wild Life in Equatorial East Africa; Translated by Frederic Whyte

London: Hutchinson and Co., 1906. 2 volumes. First edition. Illustrated with 302 “untouched” black and white photographs by the author. 8vo, in the publisher’s original green buckram, the spines lettered in gilt, with circular black and white pictorial decoration of an elephant embossed on front covers, t.e.g. xxviii, 376; viii,377-782. A very pleasing, fresh and handsome set, bright and clean inside and out, especially well preserved. A LOVELY PHOTOGRAPHIC COLLECTION FROM AN EARLY CONSERVATIONIST. Schillings was one of the first sportsmen of repute "to stand up before a snobbish public and proclaim that the best sport for a man of cultivated mind is the snapshotting with the camera, rather than the pumping of lead into elephants, rhinoceroses, antelopes, zebras, and many other harmless, beautiful, or rare beasts and birds" (from the introduction). The photographs are altogether an amazing collection, portraying a wide variety of creatures in their natural habitats, including even nighttime predators in mid-pounce. With Schillings’ highly readable prose, this is altogether an informative and thoughtful work.

        Miss Moppet

Hayes Lithographing Co. Buffalo New York - The Story of Miss Moppet was first produced by Warne as a panorama, fold out narrative in 1906, and later produced as a small format 'typical' Potter edition in 1916. I suspect this book is the true First hardback which was pirated by an American publisher prior to the UK hardback being released. But I do not know - if anyone can help please shout. It is super-scarce and has had the spine restored by a professional. Now in wonderful condition and superbly reproduced as you can see from the pictures. In twice the size of the standard Warne copies. Please ask any questions, Paypal accepted. One for the American archives, I think. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        THE STORY OF MISS MOPPET

1906. Potter, Beatrix. London & New York: Frederick Warne & Co., (1906). [Title and copyright pages constitute the inside panels of the wallet.] Original light grey-green panorama-style wallet book with cover pictorial onlay. First Edition of this ultimate cat-and-mouse story, each teasing the other (the mouse sports a green jacket and a pink bowtie). MISS MOPPET is one of only two Beatrix Potter books that first appeared in this fold-out concertina-style wallet format (the other being THE STORY OF A FIERCE BAD RABBIT, likewise published at the end of 1906). It was not until 1916 that it came out in the format of a regular book.~This copy is in the preferred state (believed to be one month earlier), with "London & New York" on the back of the wallet (rather than "New York & London"). Condition is near-fine: there is very little external wear, with the vulnerable silver tab-and-slot device in better-than usual condition; some page hinges show light wear but they all remain solid (these hinges are notoriously fragile, since they are 360-degree hinges in a children's book). Rather scarce in this condition. Linder p. 426; Quinby 11.

Barrie’s novel The Little White Bird (1902) "contains the first sketches for Peter Pan. The narrator is ‘a gentle, whimsical, lonely old bachelor’, an author by profession, whose ambition is to have a son. He meets a penniless young couple whose own son David becomes a substitute in his affections. He explains to David that ‘all children in our part of London were once birds in the Kensington Gardens; and that the reason there are bars on nursery windows and a tall fender by the fire is because very little people sometimes forget that they no longer have wings, and try to fly away through the window or up the chimney.’ The central chapters of the book tell the story of one such child, Peter Pan, who ‘escaped from being a human when he was seven days old and flew back to the Kensington Gardens’ The Peter Pan chapters of The Little White Bird were re-issued in 1906 as Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, with colour plates by Arthur Rackham; this was the book which first made Rackham’s work famous. It should not be confused with Peter and Wendy (1911), Barrie’s novelization of the play Peter Pan" (The Oxford Companion to Children’s Literature).Latimore and Haskell, p. 27. Riall, p. 74.         Across Asia from West to East in 1906-1908. Helsinki, Suomalais-Ugrilainen Seura, 1940.

1906. 2 volumes. (30,5x22cm). IV, 741; IV, 54, 16, 48, 36, 36, 12, 6, 30, 12 pp. With numerous illustrations in text, one small map after the preface, and 15 folding maps in the second volume. Half sheepskin, cloth sides. First edition of a travelogue through Asia, written by Carl Gustav Mannerheim (1867-1951), future president of Finland, 1944-1946. In 1906, Mannerheim, then a colonel, was sent on an expedition to Asia. "The object of this expedition was to study conditions in the interior of Northern China, collect statistical materials and perform various tasks of a military nature", says Mannerheim in the preface. Russia wanted to know the state of affairs in China due to the reforms and modernization undertaken by the Qing Dynasty. Besides that, Mannerheim wanted to collect items of scientific interest for the National Museum in Helsinki and to study the little-known peoples living in Northern China. This makes the work, with its numerous illustrations by photographs, an interesting anthropological account as well. The first volume contains Mannerheim's journal with many photographs. The second describes the scientific results the artefacts Mannerheim took with him to Helsinki and, including sculptures, costumes and utensils. - Number 33 out of limited edition of 100 and signed by the author. With owner's inscription of Ewald Henttu on flyleaf, dated 1940. Very good copy; binding slightly rubbed along the extremities.
