        A Staff Officer's Scrap-Book During the Russo-Japanese War

London: Edward Arnold. 1906. Fourth impression. Octavo. Blue cloth gilt. Very good or better with some wear to the extremities, and light spotting to the boards. Tipped in the front endpapers of this copy are four Typed Letters Signed and one Signed photograph from the author. In addition there is another letter gifting the book to, and subsequent correspondence between, Hamilton and John Page Nicholson, a Colonel during the American Civil War. The letters have been folded for mailing with only minor general wear, near fine. Hamilton was knighted in 1902 for a distinguished record in India, Africa, and Afghanistan. His image was later tarnished due to his involvement in the failed Gallipoli Campaign during World War I, subsequently detailed in his two volume Gallipoli Diaries published immediately following the war. The letters, on British War Office stationery and dated between 1906-1909, thank Nicholson for his interest in the book, oblige his request for a photo, and include a few passing references to the American Civil War including the battles at Antietam and Gettysburg. Nicholson was a veteran of the Savannah and South Carolina campaigns; a leading military historian, most notably the editor of the two volume Pennsylvania at Gettysburg; and an early supporter of preservation efforts at Gettysburg and Valley Forge. An interesting association copy connecting two notable military men of letters. .

The Writings of Henry David Thoreau

Houghton Mifflin, Boston, MA 1906 - First edition thus, the "Manuscript Edition," 1/600 numbered sets, "signed" by the publisher and with a leaf of autograph manuscript by Thoreau bound in. 8vo. 20 volumes. Illustrated, photographs, plates, some colored, folding map of Concord in the final volume. 40 photographic frontispieces not included in the trade edition, twenty of which are colored; more than 100 photographic illustrations by Herbert W. Gleason. BAL 20145: "This edition contains [Thoreau's] entire Journal [the final 14 volumes of the set], which has only recently become available for publication." The manuscript leaf is a working draft toward the essay "Life Without Principle," later published in "A Yankee in Canada," 57 lines on both sides of a quarto sheet (inlaid and folded in binding), approximately 350 words, with at least three deletions and additions in ink and the entire second page crossed through, in part: "Knowledge does not come to us by details, but in flashes of light from heaven. Yes, every thought that passes through the mind helps to wear and tear it, and to deepen the ruts, which, as in the streets of Pompeii, evince how much it has been used. How many things there are concerning which we might well deliberate whether we had better know them, had better let their peddling-carts be driven, even at the slowest trot or walk, over that bridge of glorious span by which we trust to pass at last from the farthest brink of time to the nearest shore of eternity!" A substantial portion of this manuscript leaf appears not to have been used in the essay and we have been unable to determine whether it has been published; the finished version includes the manuscript changes as given here. Publisher's deluxe binding (most sets were issued in green buckram), green three-quarter crushed morocco, gilt, marbled boards and endpapers, spine elaborately gilt with title, rules, and floral ornaments between raised bands, t.e.g., other untrimmed, silk ribbon markers. One volume with a small white paint spot on the spine, spines uniformly sunned to a rich brown, a fine set. (2617) [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        Love among the chickens

George bell and sons 1906 - London 1906 colonial first edition in original wrappers, 302 pages, frontis and 3 illustrations by H M Brock ,2 pages foreign and colonial agents ,20 pages advertisements for other bells titles which are listed march 1906.This is possibly the true Ist as the sheets would have been shipped by sea and with no telephones simultaneous release would have been difficult and the march 06 catalogue offers some credence as these catalogues were revised quarterly .Love among the chickens is listed as No 676 in the Bells colonial library which is identified on the spine with bells logo and was issued at 2/6.Unlike Methuen, Alston Rivers ,Herbert Jenkins,or Faber , Newnes did not issue their own colonial editions but had an arrangement with Bells who ordered a predetermined number of the first sheets which they then bound in cloth and wraps with their inserts .Similiar to methuen the majority were bound in cloth. This copy is identical to the newnes first. As Blacks did not issue colonial editions of the school stories this would have been the first wodehouse colonial. A fine copy ,totally square ,no foxing ,soiling, chips or cracking to the spine which was common in other bells titles .This book is of legendary rarity with no mention in Mcilvaine and few people even being aware of its existence .The book is now housed in a slip case for protection .This item is probably unique, bells editions in wraps are rare as they did not last in the extreme climates and only a few copies would have been sent to each of their 100 odd agents around the world .Sales were slow as the title was still being offered in catalogues as late as 1914. An amazing item with wodehouses cut signature tipped in. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
