        Japan Through the Stereoscope....

Underwood & Underwood. 1904. Complete set of 100 black and white albumen-print stereo views in original box, spine gilt. Captioned in French, German, Spanish, Swedish and Russian together with a full description in English of the activity or scene pictured on the reverse. Box styled as though two uniform volumes, ideal for keeping on a bookcase. Spine gilt. Box a little worn and marked, repaired at two corners. The photographs and cards are in very good condition. Cards measure approximately 9 x 18cm, images 8 x 8cm. This significant collection of 100 photographs of Japan by English photographer Herbert George Ponting includes many images of types and trades, as well as five images of Mount Fuji, for which George Ponting was especially famous. His photography of Mount Fuji was so new and breathtaking that the Japan Times said of it "It would scarcely be an exaggeration to say that Mr Ponting has discovered a new mountain..."The great lengths to which Herbert Ponting went to depict scenes just as he wanted them was staggering. This collection includes his famous photograph "Snow-capped Fuji, the superb (12,365ft) mirrored in Lake Shoji - looking S.E. - Japan." This perfect, haunting scene of Mount Fuji: the grassy water's edge of Lake Motosu in the foreground, Mount Fuji mirrored perfectly in the lake and the snow-capped mountain itself in the background, took more than a dozen journeys carrying heavy photography equipment of over 22 kilometres each, to capture. The result: a cloudless sky, the mirrored mountain and static grass, each stalk in focus, has made this particular photograph a justifiably famous image.Although Herbert Ponting, is best known for the photographs of the Antarctic taken while on Scott's ill-fated Second Expedition to the Antarctic, his photography of Japan is something very special. In the short period between 1901 - 1906 he made five visits to Japan. His engagement with the country is evident in this collection of photographs which, particularly when viewed as they should be through a stereo viewer, show an always interesting, and often hauntingly beautiful early 20th century Japan. (Terry Bennett - Photography in Japan 1853 - 1912). (When referring to this item please quote stockid 157192)....

        Sebastian Melmoth

London: Humphreys, 1904 - First. Sm. Quarto. pp. [iv], 223. Bookplate on front pastedown. Bound by Hatchards of Picadilly in cont. half brown morocco gilt, light brown linen covers, brown silk marker. Original wrappers bound in at end. T.e.g. Very good. In 1895 while enjoying the success of ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’, Wilde allowed himself to be lured into a libel action against Douglas’s father, the Marquis of Queensberry, who had strenuously objected to his son’s relationship. Queensberry left a card in the Albemarle Club inscribed “To Oscar Wilde, posing as a sodomite”. The case proved a disaster, and was unsuccessful for Wilde following a devastating cross-examination by Edward Carson. Wilde in turn was charged with gross indecency and was sentenced to two years penal servitude with hard labour. On his release from prison he immediately left England and, bankrupt and homeless, spent the rest of his life wandering aimlessly about Italy and France, sometimes with Douglas, sometimes with Ross, using the pseudonym ‘Sebastian Melmoth’. Wilde died of cerebral meningitis at the Hotel d’Alsace in November 1900, where he received the last rites of the Roman Catholic Church. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Photograph Signed

np np: np. First Edition. nb. Very Good. ONE OF THE EARLIEST KNOWN SIGNED PHOTOS OF WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS. A rare gelatin silver print bust portrait of Yeats as a young man, signed and inscribed by Yeats to U.S. politician and later U.S. secretary of state Bainbridge Colby: "To Mr. Bainbridge Colby with kind regards from WB Yeats March 1904." Inscribed in ink on the flush board mount beneath the photograph. The photograph is undated but likely predates the inscription by a few years: c.1900, when Yeats was in his mid-thirties. On the verso of the photograph mount is written in pencil: "Young Yeats photo by [????] not to be used without Mr. Yeats permission." (We have not been able to determine the identity of the photographer.) Yeats traveled to the U.S. for the first time from November 11, 1903 - March 9, 1904, where he presumably met Bainbridge Colby. Colby (1869-1950) was a young and successful lawyer with many well-known clients (including Mark Twain). By 1904 he had already entered politics, having just concluded a term as a member of the New York State Assembly. He would later ascend to U.S. Secretary of State (1920-1921) under Woodrow Wilson and was a champion of the women's suffrage movement.         Meyers Großes Konversations-Lexikon 6. Auflage, 20 Bände (A-Z), 1905-1908, Eierstab

Bibliographisches Institut 1904-1908, Leipzig und Wien - Meyers Großes Konversations-Lexikon. Sechste (6.) gänzlich neubearbeitete & vermehrte Auflage. Eierstabausgabe, 20 Bände (A-Z). Leipzig und Wien, Bibliographisches Institut, 1905-1908 (über die Hälfte Neuer Abdruck). Original-Halblederbände mit Goldprägungen (u.a. Kleinere Beschädigungen an folgenden Stellen: An zwei bedruckten Seidenpapieren eine bzw. mehrere Stellen & an zwei Abbildungen mittig bzw. an mehreren Stellen. 50000 Gramm. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

THE STORY OF LITTLE KETTLE-HEAD. AN AWFUL WARNING TO BAD BABAS

        Vanishing Race ? Navaho

1904. Original sepia toned photograph. Sheet size: 26.5 x 34.5 cm. Framed size: 35 x 43.5 cm. In excellent condition. Mounted and presented in a brown wooden frame with conservation glass. Original sepia photograph, signed by Curtis in black ink in the lower right-hand corner. This is one of the most iconic images from Curtis's monumental undertaking to document the life and culture of the North American Indians at the beginning of the 20th century. This particular photograph was later reproduced in the first volume of The North American Indian (Cambridge, MA., 1907) and entitled "Vanishing Race ? Navaho". The image was selected in Time Magaine's 100 Photos: The Most Influential Images of All Time: "No single image embodied the project better than The Vanishing Race, his picture of Navajo riding off into the dusty distance. To Curtis the photo epitomized the plight of the Indians, who were "passing into the darkness of an unknown future." Alas, Curtis' encyclopedic work did more than convey the theme?it cemented a stereotype. Railroad companies soon lured tourists west with trips to glimpse the last of a dying people, and Indians came to be seen as a relic out of time, not an integral part of modern American society. It's a perception that persists to this day.
