The Construction and Use of Oscillation Valves for Rectifying High-Frequency Electric Currents" (Fleming) AND "Secondary Röntgen radiation" (Barkla) in The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science 11, 1906, pp. 659- 665; 812-828

FIRST EDITIONS OF TWO IMPORTANT PAPERS, J. A. FLEMING ON HIS FLEMING VALVE & CHARLES BARKLA'S FIRST IN-DEPTH PAPER SHOWING THAT X-RAYS SCATTERED BY VARIOUS ELEMENTS PRODUCED BEAMS OF CHARACTERISTIC PENETRATION. In 1904, English physicist J. A. Fleming rectified wireless signals using a diode based on the Edison effect, the unilateral flow of current between two electrodes in a vacuum tube; this was the first known use of the Edison effect. Fleming called his invention an "oscillation valve" because it acted in similarly to a valve in a pump that allows gas or water to move in only one direction. Fleming had "discovered that thermionic emission could be used to create what is now called a thermionic or vacuum tube, a device that controls the flow of electric current. He patented the vacuum tube as a rectifier to replace the coherer for use in receiving wireless transmissions" (Wenner Collection). At a March 1906 meeting of the Physical Society, Fleming read the paper that makes its first appearance in print here, in this 1906 Philosophical Magazine. In it, he "outlines the design and use of devices for rectifying high-frequency oscillatory signals such 'as are employed in the rectifying circuits of wireless telegraph apparatus'" (Davis, Science in the Making, 8). "Oscillations in the primary circuit, produced by an induction coil and two Leyden jars, generate Hertz waves which are detected some distance away by the secondary circuit. The valve rectifies this signal, as confirmed by the steady deflection of a mirror galvanometer. Fleming used this arrangement to investigate the effects of changing various features; he also experimented with different filaments in the valve (ibid). Fleming's discovery "was later developed by others for a host of applications from sound amplification to electronic switching in digital computers" (Wenner Collection). ALSO INCLUDED IS A PAPER BY THE ENGLISH PHYSICIST CHARLES BARKLA. While at Edinburgh, he began his investigations with Roentgen's newly discovered X-rays. "Barkla noticed that X-rays were scattered by gases and that the degree of scattering was proportional to the density and molecular weight of such gases. From these, he deduced that the more massive the atom (higher atomic weight), the greater the number of charged particles (protons) in the nucleus and the degree of scattering. "This was the first time that a connection was made between the number of protons, the atomic weight and the position of an element in Mendeleev's periodic table. This was definitely a move toward the development of the concept of the atomic number and the recognition of its importance in the ordering of the chemical elements in the periodic table" (Martini, The Story of the Atom and Chemistry, 690). By 1905, Barkla was able to clearly distinguish "between the properties of secondary radiation from heavy elements and those of the scattered radiation by lighter elements" (Authier, Early Days of X-ray, 5.7). In 1906 [in this paper] Barkla does "his most intuitive thinking, [showing] that X-rays scattered by various elements produced beams of characteristic penetration. This was indicated by the degree of beam absorption by an aluminum sheet of standard thickness. At that time, there was no way to measure the wavelength of X-rays; therefore, Barkla had to make his assessment by the absorption on the aluminum sheet" (Martini, 690). Barkla was awarded the 1917 Nobel Prize and his discovery was later used by Henry Moseley to show that elements can be uniquely represented by their 'atomic number,' the charge of the nucleus. CONDITION & DETAILS: London: Taylor & Francis. 8vo. Complete. [viii], 840, 8 plates. Ex-libris: blind (uninked) stamp on the title page; no other library markings.         British Military in British Somaliland circa 1904

1904. Good. 133 photos pasted down on both sides of 13 loose album leaves. Quite a few photos have been heavily trimmed at top and bottom to focus on troops and, we presume, eliminate a lot of empty landscape and endless sky. High quality photos. Some fading. Size of photos generally ranges from several trimmed to about 12 x 4cm. to about 12 x 9cm. with most somewhere in between and a few small odd-sized examples. Album leaves have some chipping and were presumably removed from a larger and now absent album. We assume that our soldier was involved in action against the "Mad Mullah" who eluded British capture until 1920. Our soldier may have come to Somaliland from Karachi -- there are a few photos of a camel carrying train traveling from Montgomery to Karachi and then of camels being loaded on one or more ships bound for Berbera. Brief captions under most photos. Places mentioned include Judballi, Berbera, Bohotle, Sheik(h) Pass, Wady Mago, Kirrit, Laa Korai, Baran, Gharra, Northern Haud, Behindula, Dariali, Yaguri Post, and Barao.

        Bunte Verglasungen.

Julius Hoffman. Stuttgart. No date. Ca. 1904. - Black and white title page and 21 of 24 color collotype plates (look like lithographs), each approximately 20 x 14 inches, loose in portfolio - paper covered boards with cloth spine and corners. Portfolio rubbed at extremities with occasional spotting; the plates are in excellent condition with minor creasing on the left margin (well outside image) produced by the tight dimensions of the portfolio case (title page considerably creased along left edge). A portfolio featuring stunning large color plates of beautifully designed Art Nouveau stained glass windows. The windows were created by nine different artists (R. Beauclair, M.J. Gradl, G.M. Ellwood, P. Lang, R. Geyling, J. Goller, R. Bacard, R. Waldraff, R. Rochga). Each artist is identified by initials printed at the bottom of the plate; a key to these appears on the verso of the title page. While the visual motif is overwhelmingly Art Nouveau, a number of the panels hint at the Deco stylistics to emerge in upcoming decades. A scarce title held by only two libraries in the United States.         Autograph Quotation Signed

[NP] 1904 - Card size: 4-3/8 x 4-5/8". The quote reads "Julia Ward Howe / Pres' New England Women's / Club / Ex-pres' of the Association for / the Advancement of Women. / Mine eyes have seen the glory" and is all in Howe's hand. On the verso is the autograph of "Charles W. Eliot / Harvard University / 1904". Julia Ward Howe has summed up her life's work citing contributions to women's rights first. Housed in custom-made blue linen clamshell box, lined with blue velvet, indent for quotation housed in plastic sleeve that can be flipped to view either side without removing, although plastic is open at top edge for removal as well, red morocco label on spine stamped in gold gilt, fine.Julia Ward Howe (1819-1910) was catapulted to instant fame in February 1862 when the Atlantic Monthly published the "Battle Hymn of the Republic." Mrs. Howe's activities increased after 1868 in the burgeoning postwar woman's movement. She served as President of the Massachusetts Woman Suffrage Association, the New England Woman Suffrage Association and was a leader in the national organization was a suffrage leader and one of the founders of the New England Women's Club and the New England Woman Suffrage Association. She founded the weekly "Woman's Journal" in 1870. She was the first woman elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters (1908), a precedent not repeated until 1930. In this autograph note written at age 85, just six years before her death, Mrs. Howe seems to be summing up her life. What is particularly fascinating is the order - one assumes listed in importance - of her not inconsiderable achievements. She first lists "President New England Women's Club (which she founded in 1868, assumed presidency in 1871, holding this office almost continuously until her death). The second achievement she lists is "Ex-pres of the Association for the Advancement of Women" (which she helped found in 1873 with the pioneer New York woman's club, Sorosis). The last achievement Mrs. Howe lists is "Mine eyes have seen the glory-" which is, of course, the opening line of "Battle Hymn of the Republic." It is interesting that this is in "third place" in her catalogue of accomplishments. Charles W. Eliot (1834-1926) was the President of Harvard and the most influential leader in the educational activities of the country during his tenure there (1869-1909). We can find no mention of a meeting between Howe and Eliot in 1904. Her biographers note that Howe almost never refused a request for a verse or sentiment and in 1904, Charles Eliot was fund-raising for teacher's salaries at Harvard. In any event, this is a wonderful piece, confirming that Julia Ward Howe, author of one of America's most famous poems, felt her real contributions were to women's rights.

Zuerst Mittelschulehrer in Bludenz, dann ab 1969 in Salzburg ansäßig.

Schickling 74.E.1. Crawford p. 356. Madama Butterfly, to a libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica after David Belasco's play Madame Butterfly, itself based on John Luther Long's short story, which was based partially on Pierre Loti's tale entitled Madame Chrysanthème, was first performed in Milan at the Teatro alla Scala on February 17, 1904 and in a revised version in Brescia at the Teatro Grande on May 28, 1904). "No other Puccini opera testifies more strongly to his ability to discern the possibilities for music drama... By making use of at least seven Japanese folk melodies the composer both evoked the Far Eastern ambience and enlarged his musical vocabulary, since every one of them is assimilated into his own personal and by now highly sophisticated style. The scale of musical thought is likewise grander than ever before..." Julian Budden in Grove Music Online.
