The Sporting Repository, containing Horse-racing, Hunting, Coursing, Shooting. Archery, Trotting and Tandem matches, Cocking, Pedestrianism, Pugilism, Anecdotes on sporting subjects, interspersed with Essays, Tales, and a great variety of Miscellaneous Articles

London: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trübner & Co. Ltd, 1904. One of 500 copies. 22 plates, by Henry Alken and others. 1 vols. 4to. Bound in full crimson morocco, gilt emblematic tooling on the spine, gilt doublures, t.e.g., by Riviere & Son; spots of foxing on outer edges (not extending onto the page), else fine and attractive. One of 500 copies. 22 plates, by Henry Alken and others. 1 vols. 4to. Fine Reprint of the Rare, Classic 'sporting Repository" of 1822. The Sporting Repository, a London periodical of almost legendary rarity (particularly the final, June, issue) appeared in only six monthly issues, January-June 1822. There were a number of short-lived sporting journals around this time, but this one was notable by the inclusion of 19 colored plates by Alken and J. Barenger. Not all of these are of top quality, and the publishers of this 1904 reprint, while reproducing most with careful fidelity, have replaced six of the weaker ones with nine others of superior quality by Alken, Dighton, and Ben Marshall, for a total of 22. Apart from this, the contents are as in the original, and the resulting volume is not only handsome, but of continuing interest to the sportsman, and to anyone interested in Regency England.         THE EVER NEW HORIZON - Alma-Tadema, 1904.

Moya, Madrid 1904 - With hundreds of text illustrations (a few in colour) from the author's drawings. Contemporary morocco-backed marbled boards; very minor interior browning, otherwise a very nice copy. First edition. One of the greatest works in the neurosciences, printed by subscription in an edition of only 800 copies. It is here that Cajal laid the cytological and histological foundations of modern neurology. His investigations confirmed the neuron doctrine first proposed by His and Forel, that dendrites receive impulses from other cells, the distinct functional pathways, the synapse, and included an authoritative description of the cerebral cortex leading to cytoarchitectonics.Ramón y Cajal (1852-1934), neurologist, studied medicine at the University of Zaragoza. He developed and adopted Golgi's chrome-silver method for staining nerve tissues, which allowed him to make very accurate illustrations of nerve cell structure.         Guerilla or Partisan Warfare.

London: Hugh Rees, Ltd., 1904 - Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spine and upper board in black. Ownership signature to front pastedown. Spine rolled and faded, boards a bit rubbed and marked, contents toned, spotting to edges and occasionally to contents. A very good copy. First edition, first impression. An extremely interesting figure, Maguire was a barrister who produced a large number of forensically lucid "crammer" studies on a range of military subjects for publishers such as Hugh Rees, Simpkin Marshall and Clowes. "Well read among British students of strategy at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, his name and writings all but disappeared from the active literature after his death in 1920. His matter-of-fact encapsulations regarding the marshalling and application of land power, couched always in History and Geography, remain relevant today" (Geoffrey Demarest, T. Miller Maguire and the Lost Essence of Strategy, USAWC research project, 2008). He embarked on the present work having noted the lack at a key moment; "It appeared to me very strange, before the late war in South Africa, that the operations of guerillas were not part of the curriculum for the education of military officers in England: because, from the very nature of our Empire, British officers are more frequently engaged, in what might be called guerrilla wars - small wars, savage wars, irregular wars - than any other officers." (Introduction). This copy with the ownership inscription of Lieut.-Col. Angus F. Douglas-Hamilton, 6th Camerons, who won a posthumous VC at Loos in September 1915; "when battalions on his left and right had retired, he rallied his own battalion again and again, and led his men forward four times. The last time he led all that remained, consisting of about 50 men, in a most gallant manner, and was killed at their head" (London Gazette 18 November 1915). An uncommon work with an appealing provenance. [Attributes: First Edition]

        THE EVER NEW HORIZON - Alma-Tadema, 1904.

Prijs: ? 2.150,- (incl. lijst).

[Photo Albums]: "Winter of 1904 - 05 and 1905 - 1906 Pictures Taken at Briarcliff New York"

Briarcliff, New York. 1904-1907. Two albums. Oblong quartos measuring 10" x 12" and 10" x 14". Black leather over flexible paper boards with "photographs" stamped in gilt on the front board. Screw bound black leather over paper boards. Contains 152 sepia toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1.5" x 6" and 6.5" x 9.5" with captions. Both albums very good with waviness and spotting on the boards with near fine photographs. Two photo albums kept by Elizabeth "Bessie" A. Washington, a Tennessee native, between 1904 and 1907 while attending Briarcliff College in New York. Briarcliff College was originally founded as Mrs. Dow's School for Girls in 1903 at Briarcliff Lodge and by 1933 had become a junior college. The album includes large photos of girls performing a variety of plays. These photos depict the girls in all manner of costumes from Middle Eastern "Arabian Nights" style dress to French Revolution powdered wigs. The students, all of whom are female, take turns playing both male and female roles throughout the dozen or more theatrical productions that are represented in the album. One interesting scene shows the women on stage posing as nurses in a battle. Aside from performances there were also a great number of dances and events including a prom with a group photo of all the women attending and an Asian-themed birthday party for one of the girls where everyone wore kimonos. The girls are photographed having tea, playing instruments, and dressed as clowns. A focal point of Elizabeth's education at Briarcliff seemed to be theatrical productions which are documented throughout the album. Two large photos show the class as a whole with their instructors. There are also numerous photos of the campus and buildings of the school.A section of pages towards the end of the album is a collection of ephemera collected by Elizabeth during her time at Briarcliff. These include invitations, valentines, and programs for a variety of activities she was involved in. The invitations and programs specifically show her interest and involvement with the theater productions boasting "Briarcliff Manor Matinee" and "Soiree" given by the "young ladies of the school." One valentine reads, "There is a girl from Tennessee who certainly appeals to me. Her hair is black and long and her face is very strong." Another note reads, "to my room-mate dear, I write this dearest in all the world you are...my hope, my guiding star." Elizabeth appears to have been beloved among her classmates, one refers to her as "a queen of hearts." Her time at Briarcliff was full of creative bonding through performance with the other girls at the school.A wonderful collection of photography detailing a girl's school at the turn of the century and female camaraderie, with nicely composed and accomplished images, in a larger format than generally encountered. .

He was significantly involved in developing theories and methods of ethnological exhibits. His greatest and most enduring work, however, was probably the Smithsonian ethnological collection itself. As its first curator, Mason provided direction and much of the hands-on work for that large, sometimes very inclusive, and, in contrast to many others, well-documented collection. Furthermore, Mason's patient and persistent research in his collection is clearly indicated by his many publications on material culture. The best example is his masterpiece, "American Indian Basketry: A Study of a Textile Art Without Machinery" (Annual Report of the United States National Museum, 1900)." (American National Biography).
