        THE EVER NEW HORIZON - Alma-Tadema, 1904.

Prijs: ? 2.150,- (incl. lijst).

Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy

1904. First Edition . MARX, Karl. A Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy. New York / London: International Library / Kegan Paul, Trench Trübner, 1904. Octavo, original red cloth gilt. $2500.First English edition of MarxÂ’s seminal early work that laid the foundation for Das Kapital, preceded the same year by the New York first edition in English, in original gilt-lettered cloth.“The first fruits of MarxÂ’s long-continued economic studies appeared in his Zur Kritik der politischen Oekonomie (1859),” first published in English with this posthumous 1904 edition (Palgrave II:704). In this important early work Marx proposed “a radical critique of the emerging discipline of economic theory” (Prychitko). “It was the first part of a much larger work planned to cover the whole ground of political economy”—a project realized in 1867 with Das Kapital (Encyclopaedia Brittanica). MarxÂ’s Critique laid the the foundation for a “system that embraced all the social sciencesÂ… There is consistency in all aspects of Marxism that goes far beyond Adam SmithÂ’s efforts at comprehensive political economy” (Blaug, 215). With “Second Revised Edition” on title page: preceded the same year by the first edition in English (issued in New York, also by International Library). Translated from the second German edition by Nahum I. Stone. With appendix containing MarxÂ’s Introduction to the Critique, issued in German in Neue Zeit (1903) and “found among his posthumous papers” (265). Text fine, small expert repair to blank rear free endpaper; minor edge-wear, faint soiling to cloth. A scarce near-fine copy.

        Works

1904. SHAKESPEARE. The Works. Stratford-on-Avon: Shakespeare Head Press, 1904-07. Ten volumes. Royal octavo, modern three-quarter red morocco gilt, raised bands, marbled boards and endpapers, top edges gilt, uncut. $7500.Fine limited private-press edition, number 123 of 1000 copies, the first production from the press founded solely for the purpose of publishing the “true” Shakespeare, handsomely bound by Bayntun-Riviere.Elizabethan scholar A.H. Bullen established the Shakespeare Head Press at Stratford-upon-Avon in 1904. His primary aim was to produce a fine and true edition of Shakespeare’s works, which he completed three years later. After his death in 1927, the press was acquired by a partnership that included Oxford bookseller Basil Blackwell. Blackwell appointed one of England’s most distinguished typographers Bernard Newdigate, and under his direction the press became an important influence on the quality of book arts during the first half of the 20th century. Editorially, from Alexander Pope to Robert Bridges, excuses had been made for “those rough edges of Shakespeare which didn’t fit the mould their minds made, of the artist in flawless taste” (Colin Franklin). Bullen attempted to print the text that Shakespeare wrote, even if parts might be considered risqué. With photogravure frontispiece portraits in each volume and historical essay on Shakespeare portraits in Volume X. A fine copy of an altogether impressive production.

        Pijpelijntjes. (1st edition).

      - Amsterdam, Jacq. van Cleef, 1904. Original wrappers. 220 p. 1st edition. Wrappers with sellotape stripes, faded name on title, but a good copy (professional restoration report added). * A mythical book of modern Dutch literature! This copy of the first edition of Pijpelijntjes, published in June 1904, is one of the very few of which the complete original wraps have been preserved, even including the backstrip. The physician and author A. Aletrino, to whom this openly gay erotic novel was dedicated in print, recognized himself in one of its two main characters ("Sam", Aletrino's nickname). Immediately after publication, along with De Haan's fiancee Johanna van Maarseveen, he bought up the whole edition and destroyed it. Only very few copies escaped destruction. In October 1904, a second, rewritten edition was published. The first edition of Pijpelijntjes is now considered one of the rarest books in the Dutch literature.         Vishnevy sad: komediya (The Cherry Orchard: a comedy)

      A. F. Marks, St. Petersburg, 1904 First edition, first printingOctavo. Original buff wrappers, printed in black, titles and art nouveau design on upper wrapper.Wrappers somewhat marked and rather chipped at edges - seemingly inevitably - with expert conservation particularly to the back-strip. All this notwithstanding a very decent copy of an obviously vulnerable publication. The Cherry Orchard was Chekhov's final theatrical masterpiece. It was completed by the winter of 1903 and first performed in the Stanislawski production of January 1904. The printed text first appeared, in a slightly corrupt version, in the second volume of a literary anthology, Collection of the Association "Znanie" ["Knowledge"] for the year 1903. Published in St Petersburg in 1904. Soon after the periodical printing, Marks issued the present edition, with a number of corrections and final revisions, on June 1, 1904. Chekhov died just five weeks later on July 2. There are two printings of this first edition, the present example is the correct first issue with no mention of later printing on the upper wrapper. Copies of this publication are of the utmost scarcity.[188]

On Double Refraction in Matter moving through the Aether

London: Taylor & Francis, 1904. Rare offprint issue of the Brace experiment - the first optical experiment measuring the relative motion of Earth and the luminiferous aether which was sufficiently precise to detect magnitudes of second order to v/c. The Brace experiment was of great importance for the development of the Lorentz transformation and consequently of the theory of relativity. "De Witt Bristol Brace [1859-1905], professor of physics and specialist in optics at the University of Nebraska, is best remembered for his experimental test of the Lorentz-Fitzgerald contraction hypothesis in 1904 ... In 1904 the opportunity arose for Brace to apply the extremely sensitive optical techniques he had developed to one of the crucial problems of his day. Two years earlier, Lord Rayleigh had proposed that the Lorentz-Fitzgerald contraction, if it existed, might produce an observable double refraction in a moving transparent medium. Rayleigh made experiments in which he failed to find the predicted effect, but his work was not quite accurate enough to be conclusive. Brace pointed this out and reconducted the investigation in his own laboratory, establishing beyond a doubt the absence of double refraction caused by movement of the refracting medium through the ether." (DSB). Offprint from: Philosophical Magazine, series 7.volume 40 pp 317-329, original pink wrappers, pp [317] 318329 [3:blank], dine and clean - an excellent copy.

Octavo (8 13/16 x 6 1/4 inches; 224 x 160 mm.). [ix], [i, blank], 212 pp. Seventy-six color plates, all with printed tissue guards. Some light scattered foxing throughout, otherwise fine.Bound ca. 1904, most probably by Birdsall of Northampton, in three-quarter dark brown morocco over light brown buckram boards ruled in gilt. Spine with two raised bands decoratively paneled in gilt. The largest panel (3 3/4 x 1 1/2 inches) with a little Dutch boy smoking a cigar onlaid in various colored morocco. The image has been inspired by the color frontispiece, "A Boy Smoking, Volendam". Marbled end-papers, top edge gilt. The roots of Birdsall of Northampton "stretch back to the early eighteenth century but it was in 1792 that John Lacy's Northampton bindery was acquired by William Birdsall, continuing in his family until 1961. In Birdsall's heyday, Gerring (Notes on Bookbinding, 1899) reported a staff of 250 engaged in making ladies handbags, fancy boxes, and stationary; as well as all types of bookbinding. The firm seemed always ready to experiment and careful records and samples were kept by Richard Birdsall, great-great-nephew of the founder, until he died in 1909. The firm's collection of over 3,000 finishing tools passed to the University of Toronto" (Maggs, Bookbinding in the British Isles II, #262, and #321). "Birdsall's is notable for the high quality of their leathers and finishings, as well as for the inventive style of their 'inlaid pictorial bindings'" (Chevalier Collection, Christie's November 9, 1990).Nicolaas Wilhelm Jungman (1872-1935) was an Anglo-Dutch painter of landscapes and figural subjects, a book-illustrator and decorator. Jungman was born in Amsterdam, where he was apprenticed to a church painter, and studied at the Rijksakademie. He came to London about 1893 on a scholarship and became a naturalized British subject, returning to the Netherlands frequently, to paint in Volendam. In 1900 Jungman married Beatrix Mackay with whom he had three children, Loyd, Zita (1903-2006) and Teresa (nicknamed "Baby") (1907-2010). As a naturalised Briton, he was interned by German forces during the First World War, which led eventually to the break-up of his marriage. Jungmann made several painting excursions to Brittany and Holland with his friend and fellow-painter Charles W. Bartlett. He illustrated topographical books on Holland (1904) and Norway (1905) for which his wife Beatrix wrote the text, as well as one on Normandy (1905) with a text by Geraldine Edith Mitton.
