Relación de los Obispados de Tlaxcala, Michoacán, Oaxaca y Otros Lugares en el Siglo XVI

Luis Garcia Pimentel, Mexico City 1904 - 109 pages. Royal octavo (9 3/4" x 6 1/2") rebound in attractive half leather with gilt stamping to spine and marbled boards. Manuscript material from the collection of Joaquin Garcia Icazbalecta. 1st edition. Luis Garcia Pimentel took over his father collection upon his death. How many volumes of manuscripts his library contained cannot be said with any degree of certainty. All we know is that at the end of his life his library was one of the finest and richest of private collection in Mexico. A typewritten list prepared in 1937 by his grandson, Juoaquin, shows that the collection contained at least eighty-seven volumes of manuscripts, only sixty-nine of which were listed by Federico Gomez de Orozco in his catalog in 1927. His son Garcia Pimentel picked up where his father left off, and continued publishing material from the collection. He began anther series of volumes Documentos Historicos de Mejico of which this is volume II in the series on the relationships between the bishoprics of Tlaxcala, Michoacan, Oaxaca and other locations from the original manuscripts. Condition: Rebound with original wrappers bound in. Original wrappers repaired with new backing laid on else a very good to fine copy of a scarce item. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

L'Ermitage - Revue artistique et littéraire. Année complète 1904.

Bureaux de la Revue 1904 - - Bureaux de la Revue, Paris 1904, 11,5x18,5cm, 4 volumes reliés. - Edition originale. AbingtonPark Museumwas originally a manor house built at the turn of the 16th century. The Great Hall, now called the Oak Room because of its oak panelling, dates back to 1500. It was once home to William Shakespeare's granddaughter, Elizabeth Bernard (ne Elizabeth Hall), who was buried in 1670 in the adjacent late 12th century church of St Peter and St Paul. Her second marriage was to Sir John Bernard or Barnard, the MP for Huntingdon from 1660, who successively enlarged the house in the 1660s. It passed to the Thursby family in 1669 and was further enlarged and remodelled in the classical Georgian style between 1738 and 1743 by William Thursby.         AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, TO "SIR WILLIAM."

London. 17 February 1904. - Two pages, on recto and verso of half-sheet of octavo letterhead. A few minor smudges and a couple of marginal rustmarks, very good. To: "Dear Sir William [Henry Porter?] Could you possibly get away early from that Finsbury meeting & give us a turn on your way home? Finsbury, I submit, can jolly well take care of itself, whereas South St. Pancras can only be snatched by a mighty effort from its natural propensity to detach itself from Progressive St. P and unite with Holborn. Vote for Shaw and Anti- Vaccination does not attract the Grays Inn & University College medical spheres of influence . I press you thus with remorse but I promised [Sir William] Geary, my colleague, to do my best top get you; and I want you on my own account too. Yrs ever G. Bernard Shaw. P.S. I am sending you a copy of my 'Common Sense of Municipal Trading,' which will, I hope, help the cause generally in this election." Shaw and Geary stood as Progressives for the 1904 election, but were defeated.

        GREEN MANSIONS

Duckworth 1904 - First edition, first issue binding without the publisher's device on the rear board. Original green cloth titled in gilt. AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed to John Galsworthy. A near fine copy with very minor fading to the spine and slight foxing to the endpapers. A highly significant presentation copy of Hudson's best known and most reprinted novel. Galsworthy was instrumental in getting Green Mansions published in America thus furthering its popularity. In spite of some success in Britain, no American edition of Green Mansions had been forthcoming, but in 1916 at Galsworthy's urging, Knopf published an edition with an introduction by Galsworthy in which he said of Hudson, "His work is a vision of natural beauty and of human life as it might be, quickened and sweetened by the sun and the wind and the rain, and by fellowship with all the other forms of life--the truest vision now being given to us, who are more in want of it than any generation has ever been. A very great writer; and--to my thinking--the most valuable our age possesses." [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Quarto (12" x 8 1/2") rebound in brown cloth and black uniform labels in gilt lettering and original wrappers bound in. 1st edition.Includes over 4000 titles with many title pages and wood-cuts reproduced, arranged in chronological order. He goes into great detail about virtually every book. Introduction deals with the individual printers and printing houses.Jose Toribio Medina was born on October 21, 1852, in Santiago, Chile. His father was a judge, Jose of the Medina Pillar, and his mother, Mariana Zavala, was of Basque ancestry. When he was three years old, Medina's father was named judge of Talca. There Medina attended a private school called Santiago. In 1860 the family was transferred to Valparaiso, but just two years later Medina's father became a quadriplegic when he was only 33 years old. Medina's father was sent to live in Santiago, and his mother was given a government pension on which to live and support the family. In 1865 Medina entered the National Institute and graduated in 1869, awarded with prizes in Latin and literature. Medina received an appointment as secretary of the Chilean legation to Lima, Peru, the same year he graduated law school. While in Lima he discovered the remarkable National Library under the guidance of its director, Francisco de Paula Rodriguez Vigil. Medina was not partial to diplomatic work, though it enabled him to travel and to saturate himself in the work he came to love as an investigator into the history of Chile through its volumes of documents. By 1875 he published his first volume of documentary history, a 17th century manuscript, Memories of the Kingdom of Chile and Don Francisco Meneses, written by Friar Juan de Jesus Maria. His travel became increasingly frequent, both to Europe and to the United States, digging through archives and searching to fill his bibliographies. In 1877 he published a 1,300-page volume titled History of the Colonial Literature of Chile. He went on to publish numerous bibliographies of works printed in the colonial period through out Latin America.Condition:Some pages age darkened else a very good set.

King Alphonso XIII of Spain writes a letter of State announcing the death of his grandmother Queen Isabel II

Printed Document Signed, "Alfonso", King of Spain, 1p, 9.5" x 14", April 29, 1904, Malaga, Spain, being an announcement by King Alphonso XIII of Spain upon the death of his grandmother, Queen Isabel II of Spain. His father, Alfonso XII, died of phthisis, otherwise known as tuberculosis. Alphonso XII's biological paternity is uncertain, though his legal paternity is not: his mother was married to her homosexual cousin Maria Fernando Francisco de Asis, eldest son of the duke of Cadiz, at the time of Alfonso's conception and birth. Alfonso's biological father is said to have been Enrique Puig y Moltó, a captain of the guard. When Queen Isabella and her husband were forced to leave Spain by the revolution of 1868, Alfonso XII accompanied them to Paris, and from there he was sent to the Theresianum at Vienna to continue his studies. On June 25, 1870 he was recalled to Paris, where his mother abdicated in his favour, in the presence of a number of Spanish nobles who had followed the fortunes of th

Yearbook of the Canadian Pacific Railway (C.P.R.) Angus Athletic Association (C.P.R.A.A.A.A.) 1912

Montreal, Quebec: The Canadian Pacific Railway. Hardcover. Approximately 268 pages. In 1904 the C.P.R. built its vast Angus Shops machine works at Montreal. In its prime, Angus Shops was North America's largest industrial complex, aside from the Baldwin Locomotive Shops of Philadelphia. In 1908 this facility was hit with a six month strike. The Angus Athletic Association was formed the next year, presumably to ease tensions. First 50 pages comprise the yearbook proper, providing a thorough overview of the Association with excellent photos of its many sports teams. The following 108 pages are made up of alternating pages of portraits of VIPs and wonderful contemporary advertisements by companies doing business with the C.P.R. The remaining 110 pages consist primarily of more advertisements interspersed with some lovely portraits of Canadian geographical features and buildings of note, such as the Empress Hotel in Victoria, B.C. The black boards are adorned with gilt lettering front and back. In fact, the back board is devoted to a C.P.R. advertisement entitled "Get Your Canadian Home From The Canadian Pacific", the text of which explains how the railway is offering agricultural lands along its lines from Manitoba through British Columbia, as well as 'town lots in all growing towns.' The wonderful advertisements in the book are too many to list but highlights include: an illustrated full-page by J.L. Skene Co. Contractors who proudly display a portrait of their recently completed Empress Hotel; a full page illustrated by the Calgary Brewing & Malting Col, Ltd.; a full-page by The Canadian Bridge Company with features a breath-taking black and white photograph of the magnificent Belly River Bridge under construction (this bridge is better known as either the Lethbridge Viaduct or the High Level Bridge at Lethbridge). Average wear. Short openings at front hinge, moreso at back hinge. Inkstamp of the W.A. Jameson Coffee Co. of Victoria, B.C., dated 1912, atop front free endpaper. Prior owner's name in tiny ink letters upon title page. No other markings. Pleasing condition for an item of this vintage. This rare and unique work will appeal to both serious students of C.P.R. history and those interested in the profusion of excellent contemporary advertisements from firms across the land. . Good. 1912. First Edition.

        FRAGMENT D'HISTOIRE FUTURE

Lyon: A. Storck & Cie, Imprimeurs-Editeurs,. 1904. 12mo, pp. [1-4] [1-5] 6 [7] 8-138 [139] [140: blank] [141: printer's imprint] [142: blank],. original cream wrappers printed in red and black, all edges untrimmed.. Shallow chip from crown of spine panel, some soiling and darkening to. wrappers, a very good copy. Rare. (#9369). First edition. Catastrophe novel set in the future. The sun is cooling and humanity moves underground to survive, creating a new world and a new society. The novel "depicts first a world society on the surface of the earth, then, with the exhaustion of the sun's energy, a sanitary underground utopia. The author seems to evince satirical doubts about the value of the latter as a model for human conduct." - Clute and Nicholls (eds), The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (1993), p. 1201. "Worth reading, especially for the fluent, well-imagined ideal society of the thirty-first century." - Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 2156. Published in English in 1905 as UNDERGROUND MAN with introduction by H. G. Wells. Anatomy of Wonder (1976) 2-145; (1981) 1-157; (1987) 1-90; and (1995) 1-90. Negley, Utopian Literature: A Bibliography 1086 (in addition to this 1904 edition, Negley records [at BN only] a 52-page Paris 1896 edition. This is an offprint of the original version printed in REVUE INTERNATIONALE DE SOCIOLOGIE, not an earlier publication in book form).         [Forestry] A chromolithographed and manuscript charter for the Toledo, Ohio, branch or 'court' of the Order of Independent Foresters

Toronto: Toronto Lithographing Co. Ltd, 1904. A very fine example of the chromolithographer's art. This exuberant example of turn-of-the-20th-century design, incorporating many symbolic elements - some of a general nature (personifications of Liberty, Justice, Benevolence and Truth), others of a more specific nature - the moose's head, the horn, bow and arrows, etc. This is a relatively early example of an Independent Order of Foresters charter - the Order originated in New Jersey in 1874 as a mutual benefit society. Currently, the majority of its over one million members are from the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. The charter is largely lithographic - only the date, the fourteen names of the 'First Staff of Officers' and details of the name and location of the Toledo 'court' are in manuscript. Lithographed and manuscript text within elaborate chromolithographic surround. Overall toning, some expert small repaired tears.

        Italian Villas and Their Gardens

New York: Century. 1904. First. First edition. Illustrated by Maxfield Parrish. Nineteen of the original twenty-six Parrish illustrations have been neatly excised, a bit cocked and some wear to the spinal extremities, otherwise a sound, very good copy. Illustrator Maxfield Parrish's own copy, Signed by him in his beautiful and idiosyncratic hand on the front fly: "Maxfield Parrish: from The Century Company: 1904." Beneath this is an unsigned note by the artist's son, Maxfield Parrish, Jr.: "Unfortunately dad cut out many of the colored prints of the best villas from this book." It was Parrish's custom to remove most of the prints from his copies of his books to be pasted into a "master" scrapbook, and such was the fate of this volume. Included with this volume is a copy of the second edition of this title, with all of the plates removed by the artist. .

        ITALIAN VILLAS AND THEIR GARDENS

New York John Lane: The Bodley Head 1904 - First edition and First Issue. A COPY WITH SUPERB PROVENANCE and especially so as regards its association with garden design and garden ornament, This copy was owned by and comes from the home of Nancy Lancaster and her husband, Arthur Ronald Lambert Field Tree. Lancaster has been called "the most influential English gardener since Gertrude Jekyll." Profusely illustrated with 52 illustrations, 27 of which are colourplates or half tones by Maxfield Parrish, the rest being photographs and drawings by E. Denison, Malcolm Fraser and C. A. Vanderhof. Tall 8vo, publisher’s original dark forest green cloth decorated and lettered in gilt on the spine, cover design by Decorative Designers with elaborate pictorial decorations after Maxfield Parrish in an all over design, upper cover stamped in gilt and blocked in light green, blue, purple, gilt and rust, showing a villa garden. 270 pp. A fine copy with only light evidence of age or use, an uncommonly bright and appealing copy, internally clean and fresh, firm and solid, the binding with only minor evidence of age, the gilt bright and the colours unfaded. SCARCE FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE AND A COPY WITH VERY FINE PROVENANCE. One of the most well written books on Italian garden design. The combination of Wharton’s liquid descriptions and Parrish’s romantic paintings, makes for an extremely delightful book. Special attention is given to the gardens found at Florentine, Sienese and Roman villas. The relationship of the buildings to the natural surroundings is explored in detail. "The Italian garden does not exist for its flowers; its flowers exist for it: they are a late and infrequent adjunct to its beauties, a parenthetical grace counting only as one more touch in the general effect of enchantment. This is no doubt partly explained by the difficulty of cultivating any but spring flowers in so hot and dry a climate, and the result has been a wonderful development of the more permanent effects to be obtained from the three other factors in garden-composition - marble, water and perennial verdure - and the achievement, by their skillful blending, of a charm independent of the seasons". This copy was owned by and is from the home of Nancy Lancaster and her second husband, important Conservative MP Ronald Lambert Tree. It has his engraved library plate on the front endpaper. Nancy Lancaster (Nancy Keene Perkins Fields Tree Lancaster) was a leading 20th-century tastemaker and the owner of Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler, an influential British decorating firm that codified what is known as the English country-house look. Nancy was first married, in 1917, to Henry Field, the heir to the Marshall Field department store fortune. He died five months later, and in 1920 she married his bisexual cousin, journalist and investor Arthur Ronald Lambert Tree. The couple moved to England where they took a 10-year repairing lease on Kelmarsh Hall near Market Harborough in Northamptonshire, which Nancy redecorated with help from Mrs Guy Bethell of Elden Ltd. In 1933 the Trees bought Ditchley Park near Charlbury in Oxfordshire, and it was the decoration of this house which earned Nancy the reputation of having "the finest taste of almost anyone in the world." She worked on it with Lady Colefax and the French decorator Stéphane Boudin of the Paris firm Jansen. In November 1933 Ronald Tree became Conservative Party member of Parliament for Harborough. Tree was among a small group who saw the rising Nazi party in Germany as a threat to Britain, and he became a member of the anti-appeasement MPs (who included Eden, Duff Cooper etc.) who would meet at his house in Queen Anne's Gate. Winston Churchill was not really part of this group, but he and his wife Clementine dined at Ditchley on numerous occasions. During the war there was considerable concern over the visibility of Churchill’s retreat home at Chequers, so Tree offered Churchill use of Ditchley, which thanks to its tree coverage and no visible access road made [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
