SALMON FISHING ON THE GRAND CASCAPEDIA

DeVinne Press 1904 - #85 of only 100 copies printed in 1904 in the first issue for distribution to family and friends. 6 5/8” x 9 7/8”, 143 pp. with 19 illustrations (three plates are the fine halftone color images of the fishing flies); 16 photogravures of fishermen, fisher ladies, and fish, campsites, etc. Printed on watermarked Fabriano paper. Vellum spine and corners with printed title label at top of spine and blue/gray paper-covered boards. Spine vellum shows a little light wear, age-related tanning to gray paper on covers. With bookplate of William L. Maclean III, a noted newspaper man and outdoor enthusiast. Overall, a very nice copy of a rare book in its first issue (the second issue of May, 1904, also of 100 copies printed by De Vinne had additional material, a different paper and 152 pages). The author Edmund Walstein Davis was Heir to the Davis Vegetable Painkiller fortune, and one of the founding members of the Cascapedia Club. He describes some interesting early fishing on the river, which is widely considered home to the largest Atlantic salmon in North America (Forty and Fifty pound fish!). Published in 1904 for family and friends in an edition of only 100 copies, this book contains some reasoned thoughts on salmon behavior and fly patterns, and both color and sepia plates illustrate period patterns and life on and along the river at that time. Included are views of the guides, canoes, Club buildings, and, of course, trophy specimens are never too far from the camera. But alas, in 1908, the author was killed by a gunshot wound at his camp while hunting in the area. Considerable mystery has surrounded the circumstance of his death for the past one hundred years and much has been published recently about this. However, one is clearly reminded of that irrefutable refrain: Dead men tell no tales. Just as it should be. This is a great book and a real find for the angling book collector. Note: I have included two of the period photos from the book as examples of the contents. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Sword of Song. Called by Christians The Book of The Beast

Society for the Propagation of Religious Truth, Benares,, 1904. Quarto. Original blue wrappers, titles and decoration to wrappers and backstrip in gold, all edges untrimmed. Printed in red and black. Pervasive water stain throughout, chiefly in the upper margin, light spotting, backstrip worn and partially defective with some repair. Better than "good" but not by far! First Edition, First Impression, Presumed second issue. Apparently one of just 100 copies printed. The first state of this scarce book was produced in only 10 copies with identical contents but with a red binding. This manifestation is dubbed the second edition by some, but on spurious grounds. Whatever its bibliographical status this is a distinctly uncommon and quite early piece of Crowleyiana.

        Mikael

Gyldendalske Boghandel, Copenhagen 1904 - 8vo, pp. 379. Contemporary threequarter marbled cloth boards, leather ribbed spine and corners, spine and device on front panel tooled in gilt. Original wrappers, unevenly browned, bound in. List of Bang's previous works to rear wrapper. Small owner's label to front pastedown. A beautifully preserved copy in a contemporary binding. First edition of Denmark's first gay novel, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR ON HALF-TITLE IN YEAR OF PUBLICATION (in Danish): 'With thanks from your faithful Herman Bang. 6.4.1904. To Albert Jacobsen.' Text in Danish. The journalist, stage director and novelist Herman Bang (1857-1912) was and remains one of the major figures in Danish letters, and in his lifetime was known throughout Europe. Like his Norweigian counterpart, Henrik Ibsen, Bang saw art as a vehicle for social change. He was homosexual, and through his female characters played out many of his own sexual sufferings, a censor-defying trick which was also used by Tennessee Williams forty years later. Like Oscar Wilde in England, Bang was known to be gay; like Wilde he was villified for it. Though never prosecuted he was the subject of constant police attention, and was vilified by the gutter press. In 1906, a scandal erupted involving Bang and a rent boy. One paper was moved to write: 'An unclean puff like Herman Bang must be beaten down, because he is he worst of them all. Everything which is typical of these depravities and crimes we now watch rising from the depths of the swamp like poisonous gas bursting up into the air and the daylight, can be found in Herman Bang. His hoarse voice, his sunken eyes, the slump and mummy-like exhaustion of his body, speak of the progress of vice in his soul and his blood.' Mikael tells the story of an ageing artist and his obsession with his muse, the much younger Mikael. When Mikael falls in love with a countess who one day comes to sit for the Master, the rift between the two men causes the artist to sicken and die. The story can be read as an examination of the tensions between ordinary life and high artistic ideals, but Bang's known personal history made the subtext of the book glaringly obvious. One contemporary reviewer described the character of the Master as 'an undisguised homosexualist.' A critic later described Mikael as 'by far the most pronounced portrayal of another kind of love in Danish literature'. In 1924 the great Danish film director Carl Dreyer (Vampyr, The Passion of Joan of Arc) adapted Mikael for the screen, with Walter Slezak in the title role. Dreyer's adaptation follows the book closely, quietly retaining its homoerotic atmosphere. A lovely copy of a book whose survival rate has badly affected by the scandal it caused when published.

[Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        A Western Trip

Herold Press, Detroit 1904 - A WESTERN TRIP TO YELLOWSTONE & MONTANA FEATURING PHOTOCHROMS BY WILLIAM HENRY JACKSON 8vo. 91 [1 blank], [2] pp., 30 mounted photographs (12 full-page photochrome process prints by William Henry Jackson, 18 smaller black and white taken by the party). Original full brown leather gilt-lettered and with gilt illustration of cowboy on rearing horse roping. With author's signed presentation in ink on front flyleaf: "C. L. Levants from Carl E. Schmidt, Jan'y 1905" (ink inscription offset onto the title). An impressive privately produced journal and memoir of a trip to Yellowstone in 1901 written by the wealthy Detroit industrialist Carl Schmidt. This book is an idiosyncratic example of bookmaking, not only because of its unusual illustrative matter, but also because of the author's selection of old English type and the binding created in the author's own tannery. The black and white photographs are candids taken by the party. The color photographs are the work of William Henry Jackson (1843-1942) who served as official photographer of the Hayden survey from 1870-1878 and took the first photos of Yellowstone Park. Leaving Chicago on August 31, 1901, in the company of three other people (his daughter Emma, friend Frank Pingree, and the latter's son Everett), Carl E. Schmidt embarked on a trip inspired by a painting of Yellowstone geysers he saw while waiting in a dining room for his omelet to be served. After describing his train trip West, which included a few humorous detours, Schmidt and his party spent several weeks in Yellowstone enjoying the sites and having various adventures and misadventures, most of which Schmidt describes in a jocular, even-handed manner. Some of the incidents seem to be reflective of the author's own amused awareness of his greenhorn-tourist status. At one point, a trip from the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel is preceded by Schmidt's elaborate order to the kitchen for lunch, which included an extra two-dollar bill to ensure service. However, when the lunch was opened the next day, it turned out to be nothing but ruined scraps. He also describes a somewhat successful fishing trip in which several trout were caught. However, upon arriving at the hotel and handing over the fish to the cook with instructions for preparation, the fish were ruined because they were fried in "wagon- grease butter." The journal concludes with a visit and descent into a mine near Butte, Montana. Schmidt remarks: "Here comes our party and with them the mine boss, Capt. Sammie. He looks like a highwayman, but we find out later he is a Baptist deacon and plays the organ up at the big camp tent" (p. 85). The trip to the mine also includes a recounting of a shoot-out that occurred a few months before their arrival. On the return trip to Chicago, the party stopped briefly in Salt Lake City. In Exploration and Empire Goetzmann describes the photographer William Henry Jackson's importance, "the greatest of all Western photographers [with the] ability to capture the many scenes of sublime beauty in the West on his photographic plates and stereopticon slides, did more than anyone else to publicize the tourist's West. Jackson, like the avant-garde writers, the scientists, and even the local colorists of his time, was helping to usher in a new era of realism that would in part replace, and at the same time, as far as subject matter was concerned, parallel the romanticism of an earlier day".         Dracula

Archibald Constable & Co, London 1904 - The book is firmly bound in the original dark blue cloth, lettered and decorated in red and gilt, the boards are clean, but the corners and spine ends are a little rubbed and bumped. The text block is slightly foxed and age toned and there is a neatly written signature in pencil to the front endpaper. The final Constable edition and the only one to be published in an appropriately gothic binding, it is a fragile production and this is an unusually bright and attractive example.         Tales of St. Austins

Adam & Charles Black, London 1904 - This copy lacks the full stop after " St" and has the unclosed quotes on the title page of the first impression but it is in a second issue binding which has ink to spine lettering instead of the gilt lettering of the first issue. Plates all present. It is a very nice copy. Bumped to spine ends with tiny wear to cloth at base, minor wear to cloth corners and a little shelf wear at base of both boards with cloth just going near the corners but all minor stuff. Lettering and illustration on board and spine is bright and clean with just very minor loss at a couple of places. Internally inner hinges intact, previous owners gift inscription on front end paper and what looks like a tiny flaw (1/4"), rather than a tear, at the top of the end paper. If it is a tear it has been repaired without any tape. Light offsetting to end pappers but pages clean. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Rebound in the original boards with new endpapers: half-title and frontispiece missing; light tape marks to inside edges of initial pages; three of the illustrations have pen tracing around figures in the picture, a figure 8 is drawn on another page. Although there are some marks and edge wear, the pages are generally good, bar some light foxing. The original boards are very good with only minor bumping and edge wear, the decorations lightly worn but bright; now professionally protected by superior non-adhesive polypropylene film. A good copy of a very early title in the oeuvre.

Leadless Decorative Tiles, Faience, and Mosaic . history, materials, manufacture and use of ornamental flooring tiles, . recipes for tile-bodies, and for leadless glaze and art-tile enamels.

      - Staffordshire, the author 1904. Large thick octavo publisher's cloth with inset illustration; xxiv,852pp; 37 plates (18 colour), numerous illustrations. Mild signs of use but an uncommonly good copy. Probably the definitive work on 19th century tile manufacture, this is an enormous compendium on the history and manufacture of decorative tiles. But, more importantly, this contains the results of years of research into ridding the industry of lead-poisoning. Furnival notes that almost 600 women and girls working in the manufacture of earthernware and china had died of lead poisoning between 1895 and 1898. With added contributions on tiles in China (by Bushell), in India (by Clarke and Marshall), and on designing (by Ambrose Wood). [Attributes: Hard Cover]
