London: Privately Printed 1904 - First edition, 4to, 28pp., 292 plates, black and white and sepia-tone, from paintings, etc., executed by MM. Braun, Clement & Co, Paris and Dornach, marbled endpapers, cont. half morocco, t.e.g. uncut, lightly rubbed otherwise a very nice copy. Approximately 150 artists are represented from the schools of Giotto, Pollajuolo, Florentine 15th Century, Perugino, Lombard School 15th Century, Parmigiano, North Italian, Venetian School 18th Century, Rembrandt, the Dutch School, Flemish School, Early German, etc. Charles Fairfax Murray is believed to have received early art training from Richard Gainsborough Dupont, became a protege of John Ruskin, and joined Edward Burne-Jones as a studio assistant. Soon he was also assisting William Morris and Rosetti. While in Italy, as an agent for the Director of the National Gallery and other private collectors, Murray built his own Italian Old Master collection. He returned to England and resumed his friendships with Burne-Jones, William Morris, and their circle in the Arts & Crafts Movement. He also developed great American art collections, described by Lockett Agnew as "the finest judge of art in the world." Later, in 1909, having bought and sold several lots of rare books and collections to museums and galleries, he made his major sale -- his personal collection of 1400 Old Master drawings, to American banker John Pierpont Morgan for a sum almost equivalent to 3,000,000 pounds today.         The English student's journal.

Seitosha 1904-1909, Tokyo - 22 issues, illustrations throughout, an incomplete set; edges worn, paper browning, some issues annotated, some bindings reinforced by staples, vocabulary lists and news supplement laid in to many issues. The English Student's Journal was published twice a month and dedicated to providing a "light, breezy, and chatty little paper" through which students of English could study. It offered short news items, witticisms, and curious facts, often with an imperialist and nationalistic bent. Of particular interest is its essay club section, in which readers were encouraged to submit short essays in return for prizes. In these essays we see glimpses of daily life among the educated Japanese, with illness, draft dodging, and the state of the economy finding representation often. Diet Library only in OCLC.         The Sea Wolf

The Macmillan Company, New York 1904 - First Edition, First Printing with a handwritten Manuscript letter to Charmian London, written while on the Twentieth Century train to New York to negotiate for the return of the film rights to "The Sea Wolf" Jack London writes in pencil on 7 sheets of small notepaper, approx. 7.5x14 cm (3x5½”) that are laid into the book. “Whom should I meet but Hodgkinson carrying S.W. films to New York – Wolf.” The remainder is a rambling declaration of his feeling towards Charmian: “My Woman, I wish I did not suffer from doing by thousand words each day. Because then I should tell you that you are my dearest possession, you are my one possession that counts for anything. Incidentally, you count for everything. All the space of words occupied by all my books would not furnish the details of the account that makes you so count with me. Wolf.” The book is in great shape with minor wear to the boards. The pages are clean with light wear to the edges. There is NO writing, marks or bookplates in the book. A wonderful copy in collector's condition.         Our Poultry and All About Them: Their Varieties, Habits, Mating, Breeding, Selection and Management for Pleasure and Profit

London.: Hutchinson.. No date. Ca. 1904.. BOUND IN TWO VOLUMES. 36 color plates, black and white plates and in-text illustrations 442(818)pp, 11 x 9 1/4 inches, leather spine and corners with cloth-covered boards (hardbound). Covers extremities quite rubbed, light soiling to covers, a number of plates are loose, a few have soft corner creases or an occasional short edge tear; overall very good, clean condition with bright color plates. A 1904 announcement from Hutchinson describes Weir's volume as "The greatest work on poultry ever projected." It states that the book is to be published "in 13 fortnightly parts" and further observes of the author: "Mr. Harrison Weir's life-long experience as a breeder, exhibitor, and judge of poultry entitles him to the foremost place as an authority on the subject. His new book "Our Poultry," is the work of a practical man whose labours as an artist and journalist have received universal recognition, and it is no exaggeration to say that his illustrations far surpass in beauty and fidelity any pictures of poultry that have been published...; this work can certainly be called his magnum opus." Who's Who (Macmillan) in 1905 observed in their profile of Weir: "'Our Poultry and All About Them,' the writing and illustrating of which occupied his attention for upwards of 20 years, [is] for its size...unique as the work of one man, author and illustrator, there being over 600,000 words of letterpress, 37 (sic) richly printed coloured pictures, and over 350 black and white drawings..." Weir's two-volume work is relatively uncommon in a complete state, as it was issued in installments to be bound when the series was complete. This set has been bound without a title page or table of contents (presumably issued with one of the parts) and there is no index (the latter likely as published). Some of the curious features, which might be described as comprising an appendix to the volumes, include Curatives and Medicines derived from poultry; Shrove Tuesday Customs involving Poultry; Cock-Crowing; Spurs; Poultry Markets; Superstitions and Omens; Proverbs, Axioms, Sayings, Etc., followed by a Glossary. .

Bindings in overall fair to good, interior in near to fine condition. About the Illustrator: James Jacques Joseph Tissot (1836 -1902) was born at Nantes. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Ingres, Flandrin and Lamothe, and exhibited in the Paris Salon for the first time at the age of twenty-three. In 1861 he showed The Meeting of Faust and Marguerite, which was purchased by the state for the Luxembourg Gallery. His first characteristic period made him a painter of the charms of women. Demi-mondaine would be more accurate as a description of the series of studies which he called La Femme a Paris. He fought in the Franco-Prussian War and, falling under suspicion as a Communard, left Paris for London. Here he studied etching with Sir Seymour Haden, drew caricatures for Vanity Fair, and painted portraits as well as genre subjects. Sometime in the 1870s Tissot met an Irish divorcee, Mrs. Kathleen Newton, who became his companion and the model for many of his paintings. Mrs. Newton moved into Tissot's household in 1876 and lived with him until her suicide in the late stages of consumption in 1882 at the age of 28. It was many years before he turned to the chief labor of his career, the production of a series of 700 watercolor drawings to illustrate the life of Christ and the Old Testament. He disappeared from Paris, whither he had returned after the death of Kathleen Newton, and went to Palestine. In 1896 the series of 350 drawings of incidents in the life of Christ was exhibited in Paris, and the following year found them on show in London. They were then published by the firm of Lemercier in Paris, who had paid him 1,100,000 francs for them. (Over 500 related drawings, watercolors and oils are now in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum.) After this he turned to the scenes of the Old Testament, upon which he was still engaged at the abbey of Buillon, in the department of Doubs, France, when he died. American Edition de Grand Luxe. Eine sozialkritische Sicht beweist Klinger in den Radierzyklen, ?Dramen? und ?Ein Leben? Zahlreiche Künstler der Moderne wie Käthe Kollwitz, Ernst Barlach oder Edvard Munch beriefen sich auf ihn.

DE VITA ET MORIBVS IULII AGRICOLAE LIBER DE ORIGINE SITV MORIBVS AC POPVLIS GERMANORVM LIBER DE ORATORIBVS DIALOGVS

[Boston: D. B. Updike at the Merrymount Press, 1904]. Folio (45 x 32 cm). Quarter brown calf and gilt lettered boards. Calf darkened and a bit crazed and chipped, slight tanning at board edges, internally about fine. One of one hundred copies only, printed in Bertram Goodhue's Merrymount type, its first use after its premiere in the 1896 Merrymount Press Altar Book. The text was edited by Prof. Morris Morgan, and the text was suggested to Updike by Charles Eliot Norton for use in this production intended to showcase the font. Given the significant percentage of the one hundred copies located in institutions, it is not at all surprising that this imposing example of turn-of-the- century typographic accomplishment is uncommon in commerce. Updike, THE MERRYMOUNT PRESS, p.27. SMITH, p. 202. RANSOM (Merrymount Press) 9.

[Photo Album]: Teen-age Girls Attending the "Queen's School" in Bangkok, 1968 [hand-titled]: "Happiness is Together with All Friends"

Small quarto. Plasticized white paper over flexible boards. 111 black and white photographs. Most are about 2.5" x 3.5", a few larger. Slight soiling to the boards, images are mostly fine, many with ink signatures, but for the most part not obscuring the images. Dated from the inscriptions (in Thai). Each photograph is a portrait of a young girl or group of young girls, apparently prepared as a friendship album for one of the students. After the handwritten title page ("Happiness is Together with All Friends") is a drawing of an orchid, and the single word "Farewell," perhaps this was prepared as a going away album for the lone western (possibly American) girl pictured in the album. The girls, in school uniforms, miniskirts, bathing suits, and other typical late 1960s fashion, are almost all are in Western style clothing. The students are depicted engaging in a variety of activities, playing basketball, baseball, posing with a Jaguar XKE, with pets, with a guitar, on the beach, with a bicycle taxi, etc. Also laid in is a New Year's card, most of the text handwritten in Thai. A nice period vernacular album of adolescent girls engaged in a wide range of activities. The Thai inscriptions in the album indicates that this album depicts girls from the Queen's School. Queen Saovabha Phongsri took a particular interest in the education of women, and in 1904 established the first school for girls in Siam; the "Rajini School" or Queen's School in Bangkok. .

(Guatemala City and Surrounding), [ca. 1904-1907]. Hardcover. Very good +. Oblong 4to. green cloth album with marbled endpapers, measuring approximately 13.25?" x 9.74?". Containing 24 stiff card pages with 64 photographs total, 50 mounted recto and verso, 13 laid in loose. 21 of the photos larger format (8" x 10" approx.) with remainder roughly 3" x 5". Mounted photos all with manuscript captions. 22 instances of descriptions absent photographs, presumed perished. Binding a bit shaken, front hinge splitting. But overall sound, clean, and good overall. Prints well preserved, generally very good. A significant, early 1900s photograph album of Guatemala, most likely complied and partially photographed by the wife of then United States Consular General to Guatemala, William P. Kent (1857-1936, Consul 1906-09). With several well composed shots of the exterior and interior of the Consular?'s residence at No. 76 5th Ave. in Guatemala City, as well as many images of trips through the country in and around the areas of Guatemala City, San Rafael, and Santa Maria. Other historic images include a group shot of Central American dignitaries aboard the USS Marblehead during peace treaty negotiations, and several of railroad interest, most notably an 8?" x 10?" commercial print of Guatemalan President Manuel Joe Estrada Cabrera captioned "Signing contract for construction of the Northern R.R." - possibly what would become known as the Farcquar Contract with The United Fruit Company for completion of The Northern Railroad in 1904. Two prints, including the contract signing, bear the stamp of photographer Albert G. Valdeavellano; one stamped Jose Garcia Sanchez. A series of five magnificent 8?" x 10?" prints (above, left) show the ruins at Antigua. Two enlargements show what is described as a large-scale, cement-constructed topographical map of Guatemala housed in the Temple of Minerva and built at a cost of some $100,000. The album and most loose prints are captioned in detail, making this a rich and important primary source.
