In the Supreme Court of the United States, October Term, 1903.

1904 - Souvenir of a Landmark Antitrust Case [Knox, Philander (1853-1921)]. [Northern Securities Co. v. United States]. In the Supreme Court of the United States, October Term, 1903. Northern Securities Company [et al.] v. United States of America, Appellee. Appeal for the Circuit Court of the United States for the District of Minnesota. Argument and Brief for the United States. [Washington, DC: Government Printing Office, 1904]. [iv], 94; [ii], ii, 180 pp. Two parts preceded by general title page. Contemporary morocco, gilt frames to boards, gilt title to spine, untrimmed edges. Moderate rubbing to extremities, with some wear to spine ends and corners, scuffing and light soiling to front board, which is slightly bowed, a few cracks to text block. Light toning to text, foxing in a few places, internally clean. * First edition. This volume, containing Attorney General Philander C. Knox's Supreme Court argument in the landmark Northern Securities Case, and the federal government's appeal of the case from the Circuit Court to the Supreme Court, was likely bound by Knox as a gift to a colleague or friend. Decided in 1904, the Northern Securities Case was a pivotal case in the legal history of the Progressive Era and the history of railroads in the American West. The Northern Securities Company was a powerful trust formed by J.P. Morgan and James G. Hill to control railroad trunk lines in the Northwest and into Chicago and stifle competition. President Roosevelt, seeing an opportunity to exert federal power against a business monopoly, instructed Knox to bring suit against the Northern Securities Company. Knox handled the case personally, writing the appeal from the decision of the Minnesota Circuit Court, and arguing the government's case before the U.S. Supreme Court. Invoking the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890, Knox argued that The Northern Securities Company acted in restraint of trade. The court's decision, on a 5-4 vote with Oliver Wendell Holmes and Chief Justice Melville Fuller dissenting, upheld the government's argument, affirming the constitutionality of the Sherman Antitrust Act.         John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1904 - 1904 Original Hardback Wisden.

1904. Hi, This lot is a 1904 Original Hardback Wisden in good to Very Good Condition, This Wisden is a very nice book, the things to point out are that the hinges are weak, they are not split nor has the book had any restoration but Wisden forgot the hinge strengtheners. The front board is very bright and clean with excellent gilt. The spine cloth is darkened and hence the gilt is dark too. The rear board is also very good. Internally it is very nice indeed. Excellent photoplate. Other than the hinges it would be a superb book.

The Complete Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson [Twelve Volume Set] Collected Writings with Index - The Concord Edition

Houghton Mifflin, Boston 1904 - Octavo, Concord Edition. Gilt lettered dark brown morocco leather over marbled boards. Marbled endpapers. Top edges gilt. Frontispiece tissue guards in each book. Illustrated with photogravures. Very clean, fine set. Appears almost unused. Ralph Waldo Emerson (May 25, 1803 - April 27, 1882) was an American essayist, lecturer, and poet who led the Transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century and influenced Henry David Thoreau. He was seen as a champion of individualism and a prescient critic of the countervailing pressures of society, and he disseminated his thoughts through dozens of published essays and more than 1,500 public lectures across the United States. Emerson gradually moved away from the religious and social beliefs of his contemporaries, formulating and expressing the philosophy of Transcendentalism in his 1836 essay, Nature. Following this ground-breaking work, he gave a speech entitled "The American Scholar" in 1837, which Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. considered to be America's "Intellectual Declaration of Independence." Emerson wrote most of his important essays as lectures first, then revised them for print. His first two collections of essays Essays: First Series and Essays: Second Series, published respectively in 1841 and 1844; represent the core of his thinking, and include such well-known essays as Self-Reliance, The Over-Soul, Circles, The Poet and Experience. Together with Nature, these essays made the decade from the mid-1830s to the mid-1840s Emerson's most fertile period. This set contains all of this work. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

THE SAINT AND THE OUTLAW AND OTHER STORIES. By Michael Wood [pseudonym].

London: Theosophical Publishing Society . New York: John Lane, 1904 - Octavo, pp. [1-7] 8-236 [237-240: ads] [note: last ad leaf is a cancel headed "ELEMENTARY BOOKS ON THEOSOPHY"] original pictorial green cloth, front and spine panels stamped in white and black, all edges trimmed. First edition, variant binding. "Collection of thirteen supernatural tales with a dreamy, mystical atmosphere that places them near, if not in, the Celtic Twilight: the style is less vaporous than Fiona Macleod's, though not as vigorous as Yeats'. The mysticism also places them in the realm of religious writing. The author clearly has a moral intent, yet the stories usually avoid religiosity and sentimentality. The 'moral' is often hard to pin down in simplistic terms, as one might expect from someone who was a regular contributor to THE THEOSOPHICAL REVIEW. In other words, the approach is more 'spiritual' than 'religious.' It echoes also the medievalism of William Morris' romances -- a resemblance underlined by the uncial typography of the cover. The imagery is vivid and the writing style relatively free of authorial intrusion. The material merits the attention of the student of golden age English supernatural fiction, and it's a little curious that it has received so little as yet, when collections that are much inferior to it are so well-known among specialists. Vincent Starrett devotes a chapter to her in his BURIED CAESARS, recalling how he came across her WILLOW WEAVER by chance, then quickly acquired and read nine of her other books. He praises her for her ability to convey the 'incommunicable.'" - Robert Eldridge. The author's real name was Joy Hooper, as John Eggeling discovered. She was "a devout mystic who dedicated herself to prayer and became an anchorite on the Isle of Wight" (obituary in St. Michael's News, June, 1946). Not in any of the standard genre bibliographies. Owner's signature dated October 1928 on front free endpaper; neatly inked index of story themes on rear free endpaper. A very good copy. COPAC records 3 copies. OCLC records 3 copies. A scarce book.         In the Supreme Court of the United States, October Term, 1903...

1904. Souvenir of a Landmark Antitrust Case [Knox, Philander (1853-1921)]. $950.
