Harrie Kuyten (1883-1952) - Signed Oil, Still Life with Geraniums.

Mid 20th Century - DescriptionWe are proud to present a stunning still life by the highly sought after Dutch artist Harrie Kuyter. This interior still life is painted with bold, impasto brushwork typical of the Impressionist influence present in Kuyter's work, and features vibrant hues. The painting is excellently presented in a later dark wooden frame. Signed. On board. ConditionIn general the appearance is excellent. The varnish is clear and even, and the paint layer is stable and sound. There are some tiny retouching visible under UV light, mainly to the petals of the right hand flower and to the orange book. There are some minor spots of surface dirt typical for a painting of this age. There is an area with thin passages of paint above the flowers - this may be due to light surface abrasion, or it may be intentional by the artist. The frame is in good condition.Biography The paintings of Harrie Kuyten has fetched high sums of money at Christie's Auctioneers and other auction houses in the Netherlands (please see above photos for similar examples). Harrie Kuyten was a Dutch artist born in Utrecht, full name Henricus Johannes Kuyten. He was an engraver, lithographer, woodcutter, draughtsman and painter who belonged to the Bergense (Bergen) School of Dutch artists. He studied at the Akademie voor Beeldende Kunsten (Academy of Fine Arts), Antwerp from 1904 to 1905 and was awarded a Royal Scholarship for three years. After travelling around several countries he settled in Amsterdam in 1914. Later on, having stayed in Austria, Hungary and Paris, he lived in Schoorl. His work is influenced by the Impressionists, as seen in the use of colour and brushwork in the present painting, and the French Fauvists. He painted harbour views, landscapes, cityscapes, animals, still lifes, interiors, self-portraits and nudes. After travelling around several countries he settled in Amsterdam in 1914. Later on, having stayed in Austria, Hungary and Paris, he settled down at Schoorl. He was a member of Arti et Amicitiae, Amsterdam, and the Onafhankelijken (Independents), Amsterdam.         Japanese title.] A Humorous Diplomatic Atlas of Europe and Asia.

1904 - Tokyo: Yoshijiro Yabuzaki, 1904. Chromolithograph, sheet 495 x 560mm. A variant of the Frederick W. Rose 'octopus' map of Europe, extended to include more Asian states, including India, Tibet, China, Korea and Japan, with a title in Japanese and English, an English description top left and a longer Japanese text under the map. It was drawn by a student at Keio University on the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese War in 1904 so, of course, the focal point of the map is the 'Black Octopus' of Russia. One of its tentacles reaches down to Port Arthur in Manchuria, which was Japan's first target of the hostilities. Ohara gloatingly writes 'The Japanese fleet has already practically annihilated Russia's naval powers in the Orient. The Japanese army is about to win a signal victory over Russia in Corea and Manchuria'. SOUCACOS: p.178.

        Italian Villas and Their Gardens.

New York: The Century Company, 1904. First edition of Wharton's classic treatise on "Italian garden-magic." Quarto, original dark green cloth, top edge gilt. With 45 full-page plates, including 26 illustrations by Maxfield Parrish (15 in color), seven in-text and 19 black-and-white photographic illustrations. In very good condition with some light rubbing and wear. A nice example. Edith Wharton's Italian Villas and Their Gardens, a seminal work on garden design, is a testament to the passionate connoisseurship of one of America's greatest writers. A comprehensive look at the history and character of Italian garden architecture and ornamentation, the book explores more than seventy-five villas, capturing what Wharton calls their "garden-magic" and illuminating the intimate relationship between the house, its formal gardens, and the surrounding countryside. "...Parrish illustrations, in trademark dreamy, fairy-tale style--seems to dislocate these legendary gardens from time altogether" (Forbes).

Orthodontia and Orthopaedia of the Face.

Philadelphia and London, J.B. Lippincott Company, 1904, 8, 517, (1) pp., 760 Abb., 44 Tafel, Leinenband d.Ut. First Edition - "Jackson was one of the early advocates of continuous pressure"!"In 1887 before the New York Odontological Society, Victor Hugo Jackson (1850-1929) presented a simple device for the regulation of teeth, which he termed a crib. Although he had used other apparatus prior to this time, and applications in design had been used, this term is now associated with D. Jackson's name and that type of appliance has become known as the Jackson crib. The "crib" is designed as an anchorage attachment for plates of various kinds, "this anchorage was gained by extending a spring wire on the lingual and labial sides of the teeth near the gums in some cases including all of the teeth, in others only a part of the arch the spring in the labial and lingual sides was connected by passing wires over the arch at the junction of the teeth. Later I (Jackson) devised the Jackson System. The anchorage is secured by spring-clasp attachments and partial-claps supporting the base-wire, to which any form of spring can be added". (Preface of the Orthodontia and orthopaedia of the Fac. (1904). In appearance Jackson's crib resembles the devices of Dealabarre, Schange, Evans, Lachaise and Atkinson, although these were used principally to open the bite. The following are the Claims made of the system. 1. Ease of construction and alteration. 2. Firm anchorage. 3. Occupation of little space in the mouth. 4. Cleanliness.Jackson was one of the early advocates of continuous pressure in preference to intermittent force as brought forth by Farrar.""In 1904 Dr. Jackson brought all of his material that had been published in various journals together and published his book entitled: Orthodontia and Orthopaedia of the Face." B.W. Weinberger, Orthodontics, an historical review of its origin and evolution, II (1926), pp.720-736"1887 - 1890: Erste gelötete Drahtapparaturen finden wir bei Victor Hugo Jackson, der Halte-, Verbindungs - und Drahtelemente durch massive Zinnblöcke verbindet, und sie als sog. "Crib" (Krippe) bezeichnet. Diese Geräte baut er selbst allmählich zu einem Universalgerät aus, welches später u.a. durch George B. Crozat (um 1919/1920) wieder aufgegriffen und in zierlicherer Form vervollkommnet wird." Frank Möller, Geschichte der Kieferorthopädie

Card signed in ink: "Mary Cassatt"

n.p., 1904. 1 vols. 4 x 5 inches. Fine condition. 1 vols. 4 x 5 inches. Foremost 19th Century Woman Painter. Mary Cassatt (1844-1926), was born in Pittsburgh and in 1868 settled in Paris to study art, where she fell under the influence of Courbet, Manet and Degas, who invited her to exhibit with the Impressionists, which she did in 1879, 1880, 1881 and 1886. Degas became a close friend, and portrayed her on several occasions; she bought Impressionist paintings for herself and her family, and tried to get other Americans to do so. In addition to her notable oils, depicting the theme of mother and child with tenderness but not sentimentality, she made several fine, colored etchings, intending to make original works available at reasonable prices. Her work influenced Bonnard and Vuillard, and is represented in important collections in the U.S. and abroad.

He pursued impala, rhinoceros and lion on the Athi River, crossed the Tana and lived among the Kikuyu, successfully hunting elephant, then collecting trophy kudu and lion on the Baringo plain. He eventually found a five-horned giraffe on the outskirts of Masai territory. Reviewing the work in the Geographical Journal, Harry Johnston praised its descriptions and photographs of big game as well noting that "from a geographical point of view also Major Powell-Cotton's journey is a remarkable one. He covered a little new ground north of the explorations made by Macdonald and Austin, and south and west of the journeys of Wellby and Donaldson-Smith". Czech p. 226. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Drinks As They Are Mixed

Chicago: Frederick J. Drake and Company, 1904. A Manual of Quick Reference Containing Upwards of 300 Recipes for Mixing and Serving Drinks. An Invaluable Companion to All Who Are Engaged in the Liquor Business. Including Toasts and Sentiments for all Occasions Tall duodecimo. Original red cloth boards with titles and illustrative decoration printed to front board in black, all edges red. Illustrations in the text. Spine rolled, inner hinges are weak, mild rubbing to boards. A very good copy of this fragile title. First edition, first printing. An early vest pocket bartender's guide. The text is enlivened with comical illustrations provided with the "courtesy and affability" of the Heublein corporation. After the many recipes, Lowe has included a "Heart to Heart Talk With Bar Men, by the author of this little work, whose locks have been whitened by the shaved ice and powdered sugar of many a sweltering summer", which constitutes a lengthy and witty discourse on the practice and politics of bar-keeping, complete with a list of all the drinks, goods, glassware and tools required for a first class bar. The final 13 pages print an anthology of Toasts and Sentiments, ranging from Omar Khayyam, through Byron ("Let us have wine, women and laughter, / Sermons and soda water the day after."), a Toast to the Prohibitionist, ("Here's to our countryman, exceedingly pious; / He can't swallow straight goods; his mouth's cut on bias."), to "The Moneyless Man" by Henry Throop Stanton (1834-99: described here as "the greatest American poet"), omitting the consoling Christianity of the final verse. In 1909, Paul E. Lowe expanded this production, and it was published by David McKay, Philaldelphia, under the title, "Drinks: How to Mix and How to Serve: the latest vest pocket guide for quick reference, containing over 350 formulas..." Though this is the title under which Lowe's recipes became better known, this is a superb first edition copy of the book in its original form, and is extremely scarce, with OCLC listing only three copies: one in the Shields Library at Davis, California, Virginia Tech and Wofford College in South Carolina.

AUTOUR DU COEUR. NIUVELLE ÉDITION AUGMENTÉE DE PENSÉES INÉDITES. ILLUSTRATIONS DE MADELEINE LEMAIRE

Gazette des Beaux Arts, Paris 1904 - Materia: Encuadernación artística. Marius Michel. Ediciones limitadas. RSS1 [Attributes: Hard Cover]

MISS KILMANSEGG AND HER PRECIOUS LEG

Campden, Gloucestershire: Essex House Press, 1904. No. 108 OF 200 COPIES on paper (and four on vellum). This cautionary tale of a wealthy woman's fatal love of gold was printed and bound in the best traditions of the socialist Arts & Crafts Movement. Our handsome American binding is by Sterling Lord, who had previously studied bindings at Roycroft, the New York Arts & Crafts community, before forming the Oakwood Bindery with fellow Roycroft artisan Peter Franck. Bindings from Oakwood are very seldom encountered and are quite rare in the perfect condition seen here. C. R. Ashbee founded the Essex House Press in 1898 by purchasing the presses and other production equipment (though not the type) formerly owned by the Kelmscott Press, which had shut down at the death of William Morris. Essex House books were printed for 12 years, with vellum, ink, and paper identical to that used by Kelmscott, in an effort to carry on the tradition Morris had established. But the Essex House Press, because it was conceived of and continued as part of a larger enterprise involving various artisans at work in a group of workshops, always had its own special identity, a fact which Cave reflects when he calls it the "Arts and Crafts 'par excellence.'" The title character in "Miss Kilmansegg" is a spoiled and silly banker's daughter, who is so fond of gold that she demands an artificial leg made from the precious metal after losing a limb in a riding accident. Her fondness for flaunting her riches attracted the wrong sort of husband, a con man posing as an aristocrat, who ran through her fortune, and then ran off with her leg. It is the work of English poet and humorist Thomas Hood (1799-1845), whose work regularly appeared in "The London Magazine," the "Athenaeum," and "Punch.". 220 x 150 mm. (8 3/8 x 5 7/8"). 1 p.l. (title), 94 pp., [1] leaf (colophon). No. 108 OF 200 COPIES on paper (and four on vellum). VERY APPEALING GRAY-GREEN CRUSHED MOROCCO BY THE OAKWOOD BINDERY (stamp-signed on rear turn-in, their ticket on rear flyleaf), covers divided into three panels by gilt rules, narrower center panel in the form of a column formed by multiple gilt rules, with Roycroft-style roses at corners, that on front cover with gilt lettering above and below a curling vine, raised bands, spine simply tooled in gilt, gilt titling, gilt-ruled turn-ins, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. In the original (?) cloth-backed gray drop-back box lined with felt. With three full-page woodcuts by Reginald Savage. Franklin, p. 200; Ransom, p. 267. A PRISTINE VOLUME inside and out.       [London]: Essex House Press, 1904. No. 7 OF 140 COPIES (all of them printed) ON VELLUM. Generally considered to be the best example in English of the choric hymn, the present work is set at a feast given by Alexander the Great, who finds himself entranced by the poet and lyrist Timotheus. This book is the 11th from the Essex House series of 14 "Great Poems in the English Language," issued between 1900 and 1905. The illustrator here, Reginald Savage (fl. 1886-1904), is deemed by Houfe "a talented and imaginative designer and woodcut artist," and Houfe notes that he was also commended by his fellow illustrator, Walter Crane (1845-1915), for his "weird designs.". 195 x 131 mm.         Orthodontia and Orthopaedia of the Face.

      - Philadelphia and London, J.B. Lippincott Company, 1904, 8°, 517, (1) pp., 760 Abb., 44 Tafel, Leinenband d.Ut. First Edition - "Jackson was one of the early advocates of continuous pressure"! "In 1887 before the New York Odontological Society, Victor Hugo Jackson (1850-1929) presented a simple device for the regulation of teeth, which he termed a crib. Although he had used other apparatus prior to this time, and applications in design had been used, this term is now associated with D. Jackson's name and that type of appliance has become known as the Jackson crib. The "crib" is designed as an anchorage attachment for plates of various kinds, "this anchorage was gained by extending a spring wire on the lingual and labial sides of the teeth near the gums in some cases including all of the teeth, in others only a part of the arch; the spring in the labial and lingual sides was connected by passing wires over the arch at the junction of the teeth. 4. Cleanliness. Jackson was one of the early advocates of continuous pressure in preference to intermittent force as brought forth by Farrar." "In 1904 Dr. Jackson brought all of his material that had been published in various journals together and published his book entitled: Orthodontia and Orthopaedia of the Face." B.W. Weinberger, Orthodontics, an historical review of its origin and evolution, II (1926), pp.720-736 "1887 - 1890: Erste gelötete Drahtapparaturen finden wir bei Victor Hugo Jackson, der Halte-, Verbindungs - und Drahtelemente durch massive Zinnblöcke verbindet, und sie als sog. "Crib" (Krippe) bezeichnet. Diese Geräte baut er selbst allmählich zu einem Universalgerät aus, welches später u.a. durch George B. Crozat (um 1919/1920) wieder aufgegriffen und in zierlicherer Form vervollkommnet wird." Frank Möller, Geschichte der Kieferorthopädie [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
