L. Frank Baum
Fine beautiful copy, Baum rarity, first edition first state. THE ENCHANTED ISLAND OF YEW by L. FRANK BAUM - the author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Indianapolis: Bobbs Merrill (1903). 4to, tan pictorial cloth stamped in orange and black, 242p. A magnificent first issue copy. This is a 1st edition, 1st state (title page printed only in orange and black, printed by Braunworth, illustration on page 238 printed upside down and also with pictorial end-papers). Illustrated by FANNY CORY with 8 lovely color plates plus black and white illustrations in text. Just a very wonderful copy! 115 years old incredible! Here in all its fresh-stamped glory is a book you did not probably know existed. It's a fairy tale by L. Frank Baum who was the author of the "Wizard of Oz." A fine copy printed in 1903. Best copy I've ever seen, as if right off the press 115 years ago. This book will be sent with tracking, insurance and protective boxing. I'm preparing for a journey to Oz soon. I'm not sure what route I'll be taking. It will be crossing The Shifting Sands or The Deadly Desert. I may have detour Munchkin Land and face the Hammerheads. That means possibly fighting off some Kalidahs. If I cross The Invisible Valley of Voe I'll need my magic cloak and I misplaced that. Dorothy would know where it is, but I can't find her. Last I heard she was in China Country on a mercy mission gluing broken pieces for the broken who were involved in the China Children's Crusade. I told them not to involve themselves in that. They were too brittle and delicate. They didn't listen. Now I am told another Wicked … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pentkovsky Saint Petersburg, 1899 the Russian Empire. Approx about 200 mm ( 8,87") x 105 mm.( 4,13") Please see sample photos for conditions. Unique antique thing! RARE COPYRIGHT Antiquarian book, which is a rarity edition of "Eugene Onegin." It was issued to the 100th anniversary of the poet's birth in a limited edition of 3,050 copies. Ancient book is printed on ivory paper, with many fine illustrations made by participants of the first Ladies' Art Circle. This is one of the first illustrated editions of Alexander Pushkin. In the book 9 illustrative portraits on separate sheets, 50 plot, decorative, landscape drawings in the text. The publication of "Eugene Onegin" by the 1st Ladies' Art Circle is a kind of tribute to the great poet from admirers of his talent, a "bouquet" of lyrical, beautiful images. Careful in the drawing and detailed in detail illustrations - a story about the romantic heroes of the "love story". Drawers sincerely, each in its own way, empathize with actors. The publication is interesting as a variant of the perception of the novel by a certain female part of the readership of Russia of its time and as a kind of continuation of the genre and everyday direction in illustrating "Eugene Onegin". Indianapolis, IN: Bobbs-Merrill Company, 1903, after. Green publishers cloth with orange and green pastedown illustration covering front cover with title of "The Wizard of Oz", spine printed title of The Wizard of Oz with lions head in center, Bobbs Merrill at base, plain paper endpapers, the whole measure 7.125" wide and 9 1/16" tall1.375" thick. 208 pp with 8 full-color plates and other full-page bw and illustrations. An early printing of the 1903 edition. Copyright page has three entries, the last being 1903. It should be noted that this is the only copy I have found that has a pasted image on the cover which shows the tin-man's hat tip piercing the text box, which makes me believe it to be an early or first printing of this edition style. Good, scuffing to covers, minor threadwear at top and base of spine, inner front hinge paper cleanly broken, cloth firm. Minor wear to tips of boards, minor light staining in two areas of rear cover. Contents tight and clean, original owner created a tiny paper pocket and stapled it to the rear free endpaper and tucked an even small piece of paper inside, like a card pocket. Previous owner has placed a bookplate inside front cover that appears to be late 20s or early 30s in style, of girl and horse, Color is worn off the cloth along the front outer hinge, but no breaks.

DOVES PRESS
Hammersmith, London: Doves Press, 1903. Two bifolia from the Doves Bible, printed on Vellum, from volume II, a fine text that concludes with the colophon leaf on which are the names of the printers T. J. Cobden-Sanderson and Emery Walker. Initial capitals in red. Comprising 2 conjugate leaves, first leaf signed 2k. Six pages text, plus colophon, paged 513-518, [6, colophon (verso blank)]. Folio. Some rippling and soiling as usual. Provenance: sold by Philip C. Duschnes, 806 Lexington Ave., preserved in his folder. Item #404283 LEAVES ON VELLUM ARE VERY SCARCE: only two complete sets of the Doves Bible were printed on vellum (plus a "retree" (imperfectly prepared vellum) copy comprised of rejected sheets, according to Tomkinson). One bifolium on vellum has appeared at auction in the past thirty years, and we are aware of one other selling privately through the trade. Neither contained the colophon - and therefore did not feature the names of the celebrated printers T. J. Cobden-Sanderson and Emery Walker - and were from less textually-rewarding books of the Bible. An excellent specimen from the rarest state of a twentieth century landmark of fine printing, with the colophon for the second volume, thus including the names of the printers. London: J. M. Dent, 1903. Hardcover. Near Fine. Published 1903, 12 volumes, finely bound in dark blue morocco gilt marbled boards, raised bands, gilt spines. About fine condition. All of the published illustrations produced for these volumes have been colored by hand; in addition, some of the old 18th-19th century copperplates insert have also been hand colored, most likely in 1903, but possibly back in the day. In most volumes there are well over a dozen inserted plates -- probably close to 150 inserted plates (possibly more) altogether. Various illustrators were employed for each volume: Vol. I and II illustrated by C. E. Brock, Vol. III is extra illustrated, but there are no illustrators for this volume, only black and white portraits, vol. IV illustrated by Brock as is vol. V; vol. VI (Tales from Shakespeare) has reproductions of the original illustrations, hand colored, as well as being extra illustrated with plates from 18th-19th century editions of Shakespeare, vol. VII, Stories for Children, illustrated by Winifred Green and Charles Robinson, in-text and plates colored by hand; vol. VIII, Poetry for Children, has fewer extra illustrations, but is well illustrated by Winifred Green and also with plates from the original editions, all colored by hand, vols. It has lasted more than 4 months, & still those Harpers are obstructing the settlement" Clemens outlines the basic terms of the agreement: "Harper & I were to buy from Bliss my contracts in 8 books for $50,000, I paying half ... & Harper the same. ... Harper to guarantee me not less than $25,000 a year for five years." There was a catch in the fine print concerning ownership of certain titles in the event of failure. Severine
Felix Juven. Condition: Near Fine / Signed. The 1903 1st edition of this wonderful turn-of-the-century tale of the dog "Sac a Tout" and his travels thru Paris to find his way home, "comme un Grec au temps d'Ulysses". Just a touch of mottling to the spine cloth, very minor rubbing to corners, otherwise clean as could be. With text and dozens and dozens of photographs, and with variously tinted decorative borders featuring small inset photos of "Sac a Tout". Tall quarto, unpaginated (though roughly 100 pages). Very scarce, especially inscribed. Interestingly, the author, whose real name was Caroline Remy de Guebhard (1855-1929), was a French anarchist and feminist, with connections to socialists and other journalists interested in progressive causes. This book, osensibly written for children, is illustrated with compelling photographs, taken by the author herself. Told in the first person, the dog Sac a Tout narrates his adventures in Paris, including a near-fatal encounter with a vivisectionist (Severine was also an ardent defender of animal rights and protections). The poor and destitute of Paris are also cast in a favorable light, as they help Sac a Tout find his way to Severine's house in Pierrefonds, in the Oise Valley slightly NE of Paris. Thereby strongly suggesting the book is also a political fable, arguing for the basic decency of the working class. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
