Herzl, Theodor
Autograph letter signed by Theodor Herzl in German. It reads, "Wien, 9 March 1903 Dear Madam, I am writing a few lines to your brother immediately, which will, I hope, set his mind at rest. I will send them special delivery to the hospital. Unfortunately I am so overloaded with work today, that I cannot go and see him myself. Your faithfully, Herzl." On "Neue Freie Presse" stationery. In near fine condition. Double matted and framed opposite a photograph of Herzl. The entire piece measures 15 inches by 16.5 inches. Theodor Herzl was an Austro-Hungarian journalist, playwright, political activist, and writer who was one of the fathers of modern political Zionism. Herzl formed the World Zionist Organization and promoted Jewish migration to Palestine in an effort to form a Jewish state. Though he died long before its establishment, he is generally considered a father of the State of Israel, formed in 1948.

Bremen, Wilh. [Click Below for Full Description]

Vellum has dried a bit since binding, resulting in some bowing of boards and a slight waviness to text block. Bookplate of E Bernulf Clegg to front pastedown, else internally tight and clean. near fine A gorgeous example of fine letterpress printing from the Ashendene Press, founded and operated by Charles Henry St. John Hornby in Chelsea, England, from 1895 - 1915 and 1920 - 1935. [Ashendene Press] Berners (Dame Juliana)
The Ashendene Press, 1903. One of 150 copies, printed in 'Subiaco' type, with one initial in red, on Japanese paper. With the famous woodcut frontispiece of a man fishing and decorations 'after the text of Wynkyn de Worde in 'The Boke of St. Alban's empynted at Westmester in the yere of thyncarnacion of our Lorde mcccclxxxxvi (1496' by St. John Hornby and Meysey Turton". Fine textual illustrations throughout. 8vo, bound in the original full limp vellum. 48 pp. An especially fine copy, beautifully preserved. A BEAUTIFUL COPY OF ONE OF THE MOST PLEASING BOOKS PRINTED AT THE PRESS. This work reprints in "exact" facsimile the first printing of any book on fishing ever printed in England. The interest of the "Treatyse of Fysshynge Wyth an Angle" lies not only in its priority in the field of fishing literature, but also because it has served as a literary quarry to many succeeding writers on fishing, and it also established a high moral value for the craft of fishing and is responsible for "having assigned in popular estimation to the angler his meditative and gentle nature". The Renaissance designed plates are famous for showing the first illustration of a person fishing with hook and line, and for the additional cuts throughout the text depicting hooks, all manners of fishing tools, types of lines for floating or sinking, and various and sundry other fishing devices. Juliana Berners (or Barnes or Bernes) (b. 15th century), English writer on heraldry, hawking and hunting, is said to have been prioress of Sopwell nunnery near St Albans. Her book on fishing was the first known boo … [Click Below for Full Description]

J. Y. F. Blake
Angel Guardian Press, 1903. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Bound in green cloth with pictorial front board and gilt title on spine. Shelf rubbing evident and rear board has a white stan where something had stuck to it at one time. Text and photo illustrations are very good. Second front blank contains a GIFT INSCRIPTION FROM JOHN F. FINERTY TO CAPTAIN CHARLES F GREACH (sp. ?). Finerty was an Irish immigrant who served in the Civil War and became a US Congressman from Illinois. He was also very good friends with the author Blake who like Finerty had pro Irish / anti English sentiments. These sentiments were partially instrumental in Blake helping the Boers fight the British. The name Charles Greach may be a misspelling of Charles Grech, ex British military who opened a fine tobacco and whisky business still operating today. A scarce volume with an interesting story.

[Click Below for Full Description]
