YEATS, W. B.
Dundrum, Dublin: Dun Emer Press, 1903–7. 11 works, octavo. Original linen-backed grey or pale blue paper boards, except for In the Seven Woods which is in the original off-white linen. Housed together in a custom made grey-green cloth slipcase. Spine labels chipped, endpapers browned (as usual), light brown mottling to covers of In the Seven Woods. All colophons and some letterpress printed in red. An attractive complete set of the books issued by the Dun Emer Press, the private press established by Yeats's sisters that played a central part in the Celtic Revival. The poet acted as literary editor and subsidised its productions; a number of the publications are Yeats first editions. "In 1902, when [Lily] Yeats and her sister, Elizabeth, were invited by Evelyn Gleeson (1855–1944), Gaelic leaguer and suffragist, to help set up a craft enterprise along the lines of Morris's utopian socialist ideals, they moved back to Dublin with their father. They took a cottage, Gurteen Dhas ('pretty little meadow'), in Churchtown, Dundrum, near the house, Dun Emer, in which Gleeson set up a printing press, carpet and needlework rooms, and other artistic ventures" (ODNB). Elizabeth Yeats took a short printing course and oversaw productions. "The Dun Emer Press was set up using a second-hand Albion handpress that it had acquired through advertising in local newspapers, and paper that had been manufactured at the County Dublin Saggart Mills. [the Press] showed how a specialist press, driven by a combination of the Gaelic League and the Arts and Crafts Movement, could work against the grain of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Yeats, William Butler
The Dun Emer Press, Dundrum. Linen over boards, paper label on upper cover. Cloth a bit foxed, some cloth bubbling on upper board, some tanning and modest soiling, otherwise very good. First edition. One of 325 copies printed. Inscribed in the month of publication: "Miss Horniman from her friend the writer, August 22nd 1903." Although Wade notes copies were finished in mid-July, formal publication occurred in August, and Yeats later commented to John Quinn that this was "the first book of mine that it is a pleasure to look at - a pleasure whether open or shut." Horniman, the daughter of a wealthy tea merchant, joined the Order of the Golden Dawn in January 1890, the context in which she first met Yeats. Horniman resigned from the Order in February of 1903, and began to devote her time and energy to the Irish Theatre. She designed and made the costumes for the first production of THE KING'S THRESHOLD, and Yeats's presentation on the aims of the Irish National Dramatic Society that accompanied the first performances of the play in early October 1903 solidified her decision to act as a significant financial backer of the Society. She also served, for a time, as Yeats's amanuensis. For a substantial account of her connection with him, see pp. 709-713 of LETTERS III. WADE 49. MILLER 1. [Attributes: First Edition]

1903 - Illustrated by Philip R. Goodwin and Charles Livingston Bull. Decorated by Chas. Edw. Hooper. Toronto: George N. Morang & Company, 1903. Original blue-green cloth pictorially decorated in white, black and light blue. First Canadian Edition of one of Jack London's best-known books. Buck, part St. Bernard and part Scotch shepherd, is reared in luxury on a California estate, is stolen, beaten and shipped to the Klondike to become a sled dog, and (after the death of his master) heeds the call of the wild and abandons human civilization to lead a wolf pack. As S&M points out, this Canadian edition collates the same as Macmillan's U.S. edition, except for both sides of the title leaf and the lack of an ad leaf at the rear; the binding design is also the same, but with a different color cloth and slightly different color design.~This is a bright, near-fine copy (very minor rubbing at some edges) -- of an edition that is considerably scarcer than Macmillan's. IBN ‘ABD RABBIH, A?mad ibn Mu?ammad. Edited by Hamad Al-Fayumi Al-’Ijmawi.
Al-Matba'a al-Azhariyya, Cairo. Volume I: 8 pp. (contents) + 350 pp., Arabic text within borders, printed text on margin/ Volume II: 4 pp. (contents) + 323 pp., browned paper, some ink inscriptions on margin, few wormhole affecting margin of volume one, ex-library stamps, Al-Matba’a al-Azhariyyah al-Misriyah, first edition, 1321 A. H. / 1903. Al-`Iqd al-Farid (The Unique Necklace), is one of the classics of Arabic literature. Compiled in several volumes by an Andalusian scholar and poet named Ibn `Abd Rabbih (246–328 H. / 860–940 C.E.), it remains a mine of information about various elements of Arab culture and letters during the four centuries before his death. Essentially it is a book of adab, a term understood in modern times to specifically mean literature but in earlier times its meaning included all that a well-informed person had to know in order to pass in society as a cultured and refined individual. This meaning later evolved and included belles lettres in the form of elegant prose and verse that was as much entertaining as it was morally educational, such as poetry, pleasant anecdotes, proverbs, historical accounts, general knowledge, wise maxims, and even practical philosophy. Ibn `Abd Rabbih's imagination and organization saved his encyclopaedic compendium from easily being a chaotic jumble of materials by conceiving of it as a necklace composed of twenty-five 'books', each of which carried the name of a jewel. Volume 1 comprises: The Book of the Pearl, The Book of the Nonpareil Jewel, The Book of the Chysolite, and The Book of the Nacre. Each of the twenty-fiv … [Click Below for Full Description]

Juliana Berners
Chelsea: Ashendene Press, 1903. Limited Edition, one of 150 copies on paper. Vellum Binding. Octavo. pp. 48. Half-sheet octavo. Printed in black Subiaco type with a single red initial on the opening page. One full page woodcut and several in-text woodcuts scattered throughout, all taken from the Wynkyn de Worde edition of 1496. Internally, this is a nearly fine copy. Bound as issued in limp vellum with typical toning; spine stamped in gold; all housed in recent custom-made clamshell. Inscribed and initialed by Sydney Cockerell, noted bibliophile and secretary of the Kelmscott Press. Cockerell was instrumental in Hornby's decision to have the Subiaco typeface made for the Ashendene Press, the first of two proprietary typefaces that Hornby had designed for the Press. Cockerell inscribes this to "Katie." It is quite likely that this is the bookbinder, Katharine Adams. She and Cockerell travelled in the same circles (she was friends with William Morris's daughters from childhood) and became and remained very close friends throughout their lives. She studied bookbinding with Sarah Prideaux and T. J. Cobden-Sanderson and quickly made her mark in the field. Among the most accomplished designers and bookbinders, she did commission binding not only for Cockerell, Hornby, and Emory Walker, but many others including Queen Mary and George V. A wonderful association copy. Hornby XVI; Ransom 17; Meynell, “Best of Friends: Further Letters to SCC”; DAB, “Adams”; DAB “Cockerell.” Inscribed by Sydney Cockerell.
