The Grolier Society, London. Printed By William Clowes & Sons. Thirteen large octavo volumes - 1903-1906. Bound in contemporary red half morocco gilt with marbled boards; top edges gilt, fore-edges uncut. After holding several senior academic appointments in Paris he went to Egypt in 1880 as head of an archaeological mission and organized the work of recording scenes and inscriptions in many important tombs especially in the Valley of the Kings. He was appointed Director of the Bulaq Museum, succeeding Mariette , 1881-1886; also of the Antiquities service. Maspero opened a number of small pyramids and in all copied and translated 4000 lines of inscription, making the first edition of these famous texts that had first been studied by Brugsch. He was also involved in the removal of the Deir el-Bahari collection of mummies to the Cairo Museum. He also arranged and catalogued the Museum's collections, regulated excavations throughout Egypt, inaugurated the systematic clearance and preservation of Karnak and with Lord Cromer's help built up the embryonic Antiquities Service. Please review photographs and description thoroughly. RARE COMPLETE DETMOLD SIXTEEN ILLUSTRATIONS SUBJECTS FROM KIPLINGS JUNGLE BOOK MACMILLAN 1903 We have the privilege to offer you this fantastic, rare, complete 16 x 22 inch folio, Detmold, Maurice and Edward, illustrated, SIXTEEN ILLUSTRATIONS OF SUBJECTS FROM KIPLINGS JUNGLE BOOK, London, Macmillan 1903, containing 16 plates along with a list of the illustrations. They are all in a gilt cloth case with a gold eagle design. Elephant folio, 22" x 16". (Actually 15 3/4" x 22") It is not known how many of these beautiful folios by the Detmold twins were done, but it makes sense that due to the beauty of the illustrations, many were framed, leaving few left intact. Each illustration has a protective frontice paper and a full protective paper sheet bearing the title of the piece. All this has preserved these beautiful plates all these years. They are all still bright and colorful, and in untouched condition. Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay, India in 1865 and passed away in 1936. Kipling, a world renown writer got his education in England, returned to India in 1882 and received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907. He married Caroline Balestier and settled in Brattleboro, Vermont in 1892, which is where he wrote the Jungle Book in 1894. This folio was published when the Detmold twins were 21 years of age. Rarely are these found complete. There is wear to the outside cover and on the edge of the title and list of illustration pages, as the photos show. This is being offered for sale, in this good condition for close to $15 … [Click Below for Full Description]

JAMES, Henry
Harper. Page edges yellowed, Xmas, 1904, ink name at front, else a fine copy. Dust jacket has light damp streaks to front panel, discoloured at flap folds, VG otherwise. E&L A58b, first issue binding. Edition of 4k copies. BAL 10656. Supino 58.6.0 believes that, contrary to E& L and BAL, there was only one binding state, but I think he may be wrong about that. Of special interest regarding the American text, Chapters XXVIII and XXIX are in reverse order, and are likewise that way in the New York Edition. The error was not noticed by scholars until 1950. The UK text was correct. There a numerous other textual differences between the two. His last great novel and the one he thought his best. Connolly, The Modern Movement 16: "One of James' few novels in which European values are clearly shown as preferable to American....Besides being his supreme offering to Paris, his renunciation of Puritan America, it is the book in which he considered the form most completely wedded to content." A lovely copy in the sturdy 1903 dust jacket. Binding: Hardcover. Order direct from my website and get a 10% discount.

Caruso, Enrico. (1873-1921)
An important autograph letter from the great tenor to Pasquale Simonelli, the Italian-American banker and impresario who was instrumental in bringing Caruso to the Metropolitan Opera for the first time. Buenos Aires, June 15, 1903. Caruso apologizes to Simonelli for some misunderstandings over their contract negotiations for the Metropolitan Opera, caused by their telegram communications, and explains the other engagements he is juggling in Montecarlo. He goes on to mention his animosity with rival tenor Alessandro Bonci: "I cannot conceal the fact that I do not look favorably on Bonci's being engaged, not because I'm afraid of him as an artist--I am, after all, Caruso and he is Bonci and between the two of us there's an abyss--but because he's not a very decent fellow." Finally, he states his preferences for the operas that he would like to perform, and not perform, at the Met: ". I can do them in the second year, if, that is, these gentlemen decide that they like me. I believe that they will, because one doesn't come over for nothing." [Full translation below.] 4 pp. written on 2 sides of 2 leaves, letterhead of the Splendid Hotel Ex-Frascati, Buenos Aires. Both leaves with heavy wear, splits to folding creases, and large edge losses, unfortunately affecting the text in many places and obscuring the signature; overall good. 8 x 11 inches (21 x 28 cm). St Petersburg: Isidor Goldberg, 1903. St Petersburg: Isidor Goldberg,, 1903. Octavo (240 x 165 mm). Contemporary skiver-backed marbled boards with cloth tips, title gilt directly to the spine, front endpapers renewed. Photogravure portrait frontispiece of the Tsar, large folding coloured map at the rear, numerous illustrations from photographs to the text. Skilful external restoration, front joint neatly repaired, corners consolidated, head- and tail-caps stiffened, some splits on the folds of the map, pre-Revolutionary institutional stamps just once to the text at the introduction, and to the margin of the map, marginal pale toning to the text-block, overall very good. First edition of this extremely popular regional guide which ran to ten editions by 1916. Surprisingly uncommon, particularly when complete with the superb folding map and the portrait of the Tsar, OCLC locates just 6 copies of this first and a scatter of later editions. Official guide commissioned by the Military Ministry and the Ministry of Railways and compiled by Dmitriev-Mamonov, who also prepared the better known, and more frequently encountered, guide of the Trans-Siberian railway. The book contains a comprehensive survey of the history of the region, detailed advice for the European traveller, together with, inevitably, the railway schedules. Superbly illustrated throughout from photographs.
