Very good complete condition, bumped corners with edge wear, former owner inscription, some pages have small nicks, closed tears. Very rarely found in this condition. See description for greater details. Pictures From The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Very Rare First Edition Oz Book with Artwork of One Time Only Oz Artist W.W. Denslow Who Split with Author L. Frank Baum Believing His Art Was the Reason for the Success George W. Oglivie & Co. , 1903. FIRST EDITION. Exceedingly rare and among earliest publications in the legendary Wizard of Oz bibliography. And, this one has quite a back story to go with its creation. "Pictures from the Wonderful World of Oz" by W. W. Denslow including "A Story Telling the Adventures of the Scarecrow and Tin Man" and "The Little Girl" by Thomas. H Russell It is the twenty-two (22) full page color illustrations by original Oz artist Denslow where the intrigue begins. . . . This rare publication was the result of a quarrel between Oz creator L. Frank Baum and W. W. Denslow - both claimed chief responsibility for the phenomenal success of their publications including "The Wondereful Wizard of Oz" published in 1900. They could not settle their differences and as the owner of the illustrations when original Oz publisher George M. Hill Co. went bankrupt in 1902, George W. Oglivie & Co. acquired the uncut sheets of Denslow's color plates and issued twenty two of them with text printed on their reverse side. This truly remarkable part of the earliest Oz history has all 22 Denslow plates present inside the original cloth backed pictorial wrappers as issued. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cockerell was instrumental in Hornby's decision to have the Subiaco typeface made for the Ashendene Press, the first of two proprietary typefaces that Hornby had designed for the Press. Cockerell inscribes this to "Katie." It is quite likely that this is the bookbinder, Katharine Adams. She and Cockerell travelled in the same circles (she was friends with William Morris's daughters from childhood) and became and remained very close friends throughout their lives. Moore (George Edward)
Cambridge: at the University Press, 1903. FIRST EDITION, pp. xxvii, 232, 8vo, original brown cloth, backstrip lettered in gilt, mottled discolouration to boards, rubbing to extremities and corners a little knocked, foxing to endpapers, good. A family presentation copy of one of the twentieth-century's most important philosophical works, the half-title inscribed: 'J.H. Moore, with love from George, Nov. 4, '03'. The recipient, Joseph Herbert Moore, was the youngest of Moore's brothers - and like the eldest of the group, T. Sturge Moore, an artist, though his slow work-rate and disinclination towards exhibition forestalled his progress. The occasion of the gift was J.H's 28th birthday, according to a pencil note on the front pastedown. (See PMM 423, where this work is referred to referred to under Keynes, as a seminal influence on him)) [Attributes: First Edition]

MOORE, George Edward.
Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1903. Octavo. Original brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt, edges uncut, partially unopened. Contemporary ownership inscription of the English philosopher H. A. Prichard, then Fellow of Trinity College, Oxford, and later Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University, to front free endpaper, second inscription to front pastedown. Spine rolled, ends and corners bumped and lightly rubbed, endpapers lightly spotted; a very good copy. First edition, first impression. G. E. Moore (1873-1958) was critical of the dominant idealist metaphysics of the time. In this, his most famous book, he presents a new approach to ethical theory wherein "analytical concern with the structure of ethical concepts is sharply separated from debates about the substance of morality" (ODNB). Connected to the original nucleus of the Bloomsbury Group through his membership of the Apostles, "Moore was never himself a member but if he took from them a profound, and perhaps exaggerated, sense of the value of friendship and art, they took from him the thought that lives dedicated to these values were indeed lives well spent. As Keynes later put it, Principia Ethica provided them with their 'religion' (Keynes, 436)" (ODNB). Writing to Clive Bell in 1908, Virginia Woolf remarked, "I am climbing Moore like some industrious insect, who is determined to build a nest on top of a cathedral spire." Ziegenfuss II 171; see Copleston, History of Philosophy, Vol.8, Bentham to Russell, Ch. 18. [Attributes: First Edition]

MOORE, George Edward.
Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1903. Octavo. Original brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt, edges uncut. Housed in a black cloth flat-back box by the Chelsea Bindery. Spine ends and corners lightly worn; later ownership inscription of Russell J. Parkes, with his occasional neat pencil annotations to the text and to the rear free endpaper; a very good copy. First edition, first impression, presentation copy, inscribed by the author in the year of publication to his sister, later the wife of the Apostle A. R. Ainsworth with whom Moore was infatuated, "To Sarah, with best love from George, Christmas 1903". In 1904, after Moore failed to secure an extension to his fellowship at Trinity, he moved to Edinburgh to live with his close friend Alfred Richard Ainsworth (1879–1959), who lectured at the University. Ainsworth had been elected to the Apostles in 1899 upon Moore's suggestion, and biographers such as Paul Levy and Julie Anne Taddeo have stated that the two men considered themselves to be in a serious, non-physical, relationship. When his youngest sister Sarah Moore (1895–1925) became engaged to Ainsworth in 1908 Moore was remarked upon as being noticeably dismayed, though he eventually came to enjoy having Ainsworth as a brother-in-law, and Sarah and Ainsworth named their first son after Moore. E. M. Forster, a contemporary of Ainsworth's at King's College, Cambridge, modelled the character Stewart Ansell in The Longest Journey (1907) on Ainsworth. G. E. Moore (1873–1958) was critical of the dominant idealist metaphysics of the time. In this, his most famous book, he … [Click Below for Full Description]
