WODEHOUSE, P.G.
WODEHOUSE, P.G. A Prefect's Uncle. London: Adam & Charles Black, 1903.8vo. Original crimson pictorial cloth; cover printed in black, pale blue and pink replicating frontis; spine printed in light blue, pink, black and gold, replicating plate 1; with 8 full-page illustrations by R. Noel Pocock; pp. [viii], 264; pages a little spotted, particularly to prelims; bookplate to ffep, endpapers browned; bookseller sticker to front paste-down; a few dark marks to outer edge; cloth retaining much of its brightness, with some very minimal soiling and sunning to spine, which is also lightly pushed at head and foot, though without nicks or tears; a very good copy overall. First edition, first issue, lacking the advertisments at the rear. The author's second book, after The Pot Hunters, scarce in this condition. Scandal, disruption and excitement ensue as Farnie arrives at Beckford College private school for boys. As with many other Wodehouse novels of the period, the book is one of his so-called 'school stories', and features the boarding school banter and cricketing dramas which so characterise many of his works. The novel is dedicated to Wodehouse's friend William (Bill) Townend. Wodehouse met his life-long friend and confidant during his school days at Dulwich, and it is most likely his influence which led Wodehouse to name so many of his titles after him. Townsend is also the dedicatee of Wodehouse's first book, The Pothunters, and his name further appears in The Coming of Bill (novel); Good Morning, Bill (play); and Bill the Bloodhound (short story in the volume The Man with Tw … [Click Below for Full Description]

When looking at other sellers make sure you know what you are getting and ask questions. This listing is for original volumes as issued from Easton Press and not the discards from the manufacturers that you may see elsewhere. The series - In 1903 mankind (in his many millennia of existence) recorded his first flight at Kitty Hawk. In little over fifty years latter we were leaving our planetary orb. A few short years after that we set foot on another terrestrial sphere. These are the seminal volumes of that early history of maned space flight from the American perspective. SHERLOCK HOLMES / MAXFIELD PARRISH / EARLY 20TH CENTURY ILLUSTRATORS) Parrish, Maxfield; Jessie Willcox Smith, Harrison Fisher,
P. F. Collier & Son. New York. 1903 and 1905. Bound volume of NON CONSECUTIVE issues of Collier's magazine 10 3/4 x 15 3/4 inches, marbled paper boards with leather spine and corners; wear to covers with loss to head and tail of spine, front board just starting to come loose; magazines generally in good or better condition with mailing label affixed in upper area of front covers and very soft horizontal mailing crease (in most instances not visible); toning to endpapers and previous owner's name in pencil on front free endpaper. Back covers have NOT been bound in. The magazines are profusely illustrated in black and white with color covers, featuring issues of the magazine from 1903 (November through December) and, in 1905, weekly issues (January through April) not bound in chronological order. The issues for 1903 appear to be of two sorts: either weekly or monthly. The weekly features a date beneath the Collier's name on the front cover, whereas text for the monthly states "The Household Number for" followed by a given month. The issues are overall in very good clean condition, with paper loss to just a single page, taped damage to another (November 21, 1903), some large spots and short tear to the Maxfield Parrish cover (January 7 1905 issue). Other issues in very good clean condition, with a very occasional crinkle or light soiling to a random page. Number of pages per issue varies between 20 and 30. An unusual collection providing a fascinating glimpse into American life and society of the early 20th century, its politics, current events, society and art. Canada, J.W., ed
Denver & Omaha: El Porvenir Publishing Company, 1903. Still very good.. [4],64,[4]pp. Original printed wrappers, stapled. Text printed in green ink. Occasional small patches of staining; light tanning. First and perhaps only issue of this self-proclaimed periodical champion for the American West, published in October 1903 in Omaha and Denver. The advertising text and mission statement on the rear wrapper claims that, "The making of farms, gardens, homes, cities in the midst of arid lands,-- Life in the West in all phases -- find true expression, by word and picture, in its pages.... While offering no apology for its existence, this first number serves only to show the possibilities of such a magazine. Each number will excel its predecessor in reading matter, illustrations, style, all things that go to make up a handsome publication." Articles inside include promotionals for Colorado towns south of Grand Junction such as Paonia, Cedaredge, and Montrose, short stories and poetry by Western authors, as well as several shorter promotional pieces for towns and regions in Wyoming, with numerous reproductions of photographs throughout. We locate no copies of this or any other issue; unrecorded, and perhaps the only issue published.

1903. There are forty-two images, photographs, newspaper photographs, and real photo postcards in this thoroughly annotated tribute album to Clare Boothe Luce (1903-1987). She was a public conservative republican figure, the first woman appointed to a major US ambassadorial position abroad (Ambassador to Italy), Congresswoman, author and playwright of the 1936 all-women casted satirical comedy play "The Women", among others. The album measures 10.75" x 13.25", with a blue faux leather cover with gold embossed decorations. There are 40 black paper pages with images and annotations, with one third of the album blank in the back. Nothing appears to be missing, and photos are attached with photo corners. Most photos are 8"x10" press photos of Clare attending and giving speeches at various events: communion breakfasts and special dinners with religious figures in and around Connecticut, at Republican conventions, attending and performing at theaters, receiving the Cardinal Neuman Award of Rochester NY from Most Rev. James Kearney, after being received in an audience with Pope Pius XII. There are photos of the various churches she attended as well as her Connecticut home and an image of the Waldorf-Astoria, her New York City home. Of note is a photograph of her chatting with Eleanor Roosevelt before Clare delivers a speech at the Gold Medal Award Dinner of the Wiliamsburg Settlement Brooklyn Philanthropic League & United Order of True Sisters at the Waldorf-Astoria, May, 1950. Mrs. Roosevelt would receive the Gold Medal award at that dinner. One press photo shows her attentively … [Click Below for Full Description]

1903. 2nd edition , 1st state. 16 color plates. This is hardest state out of all wizard of OZ titles to find. RARE. Good + condition. One page have repairs with rice paper ( see last photo). One of the main points to distinguish this edition form other similar books is presence of the work The "New" Wizard of Oz on the front cover. Many people think that they have rare book, but in my opinion it is defined by number of copies available for sale online. For example at Abebooks website where over 15000 antique book dealer list over 120 million books, I could not locate one single copy of this edition. That in my opinion what defines RARE. I have many Oz books and memorabilia and strive to provide excellent customer service. In average I provide over 20 photos of every part of the book in order for buyers to make an inform decision about a book and avoid possible dissatisfaction. I offer 30 days return and most of the time offer a free shipping. About additional photos for this listing 1. Select blue text below and use copy command wizardofozbooks.com/01/05 2. London, Jack
The Macmillan Company, New York, 1903. First edition of one of the most desirable classics in American literature. Octavo, original pictorial green cloth, pictorial endpapers, top edge gilt. With 18 full-page color illustrations by Philip R. Goodwin and Charles Livingston Bull. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page, "To Elinor Glyn:- My most popular, but my own heart goes out to some of my sociological screeds. Jack London Mar. 1, 1911." The recipient Elinor Glyn was a British novelist and scriptwriter who specialized in romantic fiction, which was considered scandalous for its time. Her first book, The Visits of Elizabeth was published the same year as London's first book. She later moved to California and became one of the first female writers of movie screenplays. She popularized the concept of the It-girl, and had tremendous influence on early 20th-century popular culture and, possibly, on the careers of notable Hollywood stars such as Rudolph Valentino, Gloria Swanson and, especially, Clara Bow. In near fine condition with light shelfwear. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Signed first editions of this classic title are scarce. The Call of the Wild is "one of the first American novels to examine the quest of the pioneering individual who breaks away from the sheltered environment of civilization and is romantically compelled to find freedom in nature. In the early part of the century this was considered the American dream" (Parker, 16). Named by Modern Library's as one of the 100 greatest novels of the twentieth century. TSIOLKOVSKY, Konstantin Eduardovich.
St. Petersburg: E. L. Porokhovshchikov, 1903. First edition. First edition, extraordinarily rare, of the first published work on space rockets, preceding by 16 years the first publication on rockets by Robert Goddard and by 20 years that of Hermann Oberth. In his bibliography of works on spaceflight, NASA engineer Michael L. Ciancone writes: "Three men are widely recognized as the fathers of rocketry for spaceflight--Konstantin Tsiolkovskii (Russia), Hermann Oberth (Germany), and Robert Goddard (United States). Tsiolkovskii developed the theory underpinning human spaceflight and wrote small books on space travel and cosmology (the expansion of humans into the cosmos). The 'holy grail' of this genre is an article he wrote in the May 1903 issue of Nauchnoe Obozrenie [Scientific Review] on 'Exploration of Space by Means of Reactive Devices' in which he established the 'rocket equation' and addressed various aspects of future spaceflight." "Tsiolkovsky had grasped the principle of reaction flight as early as 1883, and his 'Exploration of Space Using Reactive Devices' (1903) contains the first mathematical exposition of the reaction principle operating in space. BINDINGS - WOMEN BINDERS). WHITMAN, ALFRED
London: [Printed at the Chiswick Press for] George Bell & Sons, 1903. Third Edition, with additions. This guide for the novice print collector is offered here in a handsome, rarely-seen example of the work of two women bookbinders whose skill suggests that their present-day obscurity is undeserved. According to Tidcombe, Lilian Hay-Cooper designed the bindings produced at their studio in Haslemere, Surrey in the first decade of the 20th century; these were then executed by Sybil Barnard with assistance from Hay-Cooper. The duo had a binding on William Morris' "The Hollow Land" included in Great Britain's exhibit of "Original Objects of Art Workmanship" at the Universal Exposition in St. Louis in 1904, and one of their bindings is pictured in a 1906 article in "The Art Journal" that discusses the Arts & Crafts community in Haslemere. They exhibited a binding in the Eighth Arts & Crafts Exhibition Society show in 1906, an Altar Book priced at the then-considerable sum of £10, 10 shillings. By the Ninth A&CES Exhibition in 1910, the three bindings they submitted were impressive enough to be displayed in a case alongside work by Sybil Pye, Alfred De Sauty, and Charles McLeish. We have been unable to find much information on the women beyond 1910, although correspondence in the archive of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies indicates that Hay-Cooper was involved in the fight for women's right to vote. The text here, written by an expert from the Department of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum, offers guidance to the beginning print collector, explaini … [Click Below for Full Description]

Astronaut Library 6 volume set plus matching seventh Title List Below Author: Illustrations by Description: Please note this listing is for seven volumes and not just the original 6 volume set. The first six are likely all same signature number (928 out of 3,000) for the open ones and all came from the same collector, shipped from Easton Press at the same time. I cannot guarantee the number of the sealed volumes, but I can assure they came from the same source and not pieced together as a collection. The seventh book was not offered together with the set, but matches the set. All certificates of authenticity and signatures are present. Buyers should beware that nearly an entire pallet of rejects from Easton Press found their way onto the secondary market and do not include certificates, in some cases no signature. When looking at other sellers make sure you know what you are getting and ask questions. This listing is for original volumes as issued from Easton Press and not the discards from the manufacturers that you may see elsewhere. Some books have more than one author and include more than one certificate and signature to represent each author. The series - In 1903 mankind (in his many millennia of existence) recorded his first flight at Kitty Hawk. In little over fifty years latter we were leaving our planetary orb. Washington: The Neale Publishing Company, 1903. This book is a first thus as there are NAP, but there was an edition in 1893 and the author states in the preface "Of some of the tales in this new and authorized edition the author wishes to explain that their appearance in other forms since the original edition of 1893 has been without his knowledge or assent." The book is clean, basically tight, square with sharp corners and internally unmarked, but there is a very small book plate and name stamp in the upper, fore corner of the front paste down. Although basically tight, there are no rear end papers and the mesh on the rear hinge is showing. The hinge is still pretty solid, but beginning to open at the top. It has 320, bright, clear pages. The boards are covered in brown cloth with bright gold titles stamped on the spine and front. There are white lines and a white question mark on the spine while the front board is outlined in white with a large white question mark in the center. This is a very nice looking book.

Maeterlinck, Maurice
Paris: Charpentier et Fasquelle, 1903. Piece en cinq actes (A Play in 5 Acts) First Edition. Hardcover. Inscribed by Maeterlinck "A A.B. Walkley en bien cordial souvenir / M. Maeterlinck" on the half-title page. In addition, there is a "lettre pneumatique" in Maeterlinck's hand that has been tipped into the book on an extra preliminary page addressed to Walkley arranging for him to meet the playwright the following day at the theatre entrance so he can let in Mr. Walkley for a full-dress performance (rehearsal) of the entire play. The note-often referred to as a "petit bleu"-has been sent (and is dated) around the time of the play's introduction to the Paris audience. Original wrappers have been bound into plain blue boards. Maeterlinck, best known for THE BLUEBIRD (1908) and PELLEAS ET MELISANDE (Debussy composed an opera based on this 1893 play that premiered in 1902), was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1911. Nice association. Both book and letter are very good. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Randall, William Edgar
San Francisco, 1903. Three notebooks. [92]; [40]; [55]pp., on lined paper. Illustrations. Uniform contemporary black leather over limp paper covers. Spines partially perished, some rubbing and soiling. Minor dust-soiling to text. Overall very good. A collection of three fantasy-tinged illustrated storybooks composed and illustrated by William Edgar Randall, a teenaged San Francisco storyteller and artist in the first few years of the 20th century. These three journals detail "Ed" Randall's fertile imagination, which takes the form of stories or fake letters, most of them illustrated with charming black and white ink title vignettes or calligraphic titles, which are sometimes accented with watercolors. As an adult Randall would work as a civil engineer and as a commercial illustrator - these volumes are early evidence of his artistic skill and imagination. At the start of each journal is a titlepage that often features an original ink-drawn bookplate, one of which hilariously states, "This book was dug up from under Carlisle Castle and supposed to have been written about anno domino 1902 or 1903 by one W Edgar Randall who lived at that remote period of the Earth's existence." At the beginning of each journal is also a manuscript table of contents or "Index," illustrated. Some of the more straightforward entries, such as short biographies of Nathaniel Hawthorne, John Greenleaf Whittier, or Paul Revere (or an essay on Chalk) appear to have been school assignments for which Randall was using the journal to compose a draft. In other entries it is clear that Randall is weavin … [Click Below for Full Description]
