James, Henry
London: Methuen & Co., 1903. 40 pp (38 pp printed) ads dated July 1903. Original red cloth. First Edition of the novel in which a rich Massachusetts widow sends various "ambassadors" (an admirer, a daughter, etc.) to France to bring home her son from what she presumes must be an undesirable liaison. James himself considered this to be "quite the best, 'all round,' of my productions." This London edition "acquires a certain uniqueness" [E&L] in that it contains chapters 28 and 29 in the order intended by James (29 being a flashback of sorts). In Harper's American edition, published six weeks later, these two chapters were mistakenly reversed so as to maintain chronological sequence; this erroneous order became the norm (used even for the New York Edition of James's works), a discrepancy not even discovered until 1950. This is a remarkably fine, bright copy -- essentially no wear at all, red cloth and cover gilt still very bright, scarcely any of the usual fading of the spine; if we must find a flaw it would be a bit of the unavoidable foxing on the edge of the leaves. This English edition is not only earlier, and truer to James's manuscript, but is also much scarcer than the American edition. Supino 58.1.0; Edel & Laurence A58a; Connolly MODERN MOVEMENT #16. Provenance: armorial bookplate of Genevieve Ludlow Griscom (1868-1950s), who with her husband Clement (he had made a fortune making ship heaters) were major figures of the Theosophical Society of America; after his death, Genevieve was a member of the "Outer Court of the Order of the Living Christ," and beginning in 1928 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ambrose Bierce
Washington: The Neale Publishing Company, 1903. Revised Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. This book is a first thus as there are NAP, but there was an edition in 1893 and the author states in the preface "Of some of the tales in this new and authorized edition the author wishes to explain that their appearance in other forms since the original edition of 1893 has been without his knowledge or assent." The book is clean, basically tight, square with sharp corners and internally unmarked, but there is a very small book plate and name stamp in the upper, fore corner of the front paste down. Although basically tight, there are no rear end papers and the mesh on the rear hinge is showing. The hinge is still pretty solid, but beginning to open at the top. It has 320, bright, clear pages. The boards are covered in brown cloth with bright gold titles stamped on the spine and front. There are white lines and a white question mark on the spine while the front board is outlined in white with a large white question mark in the center. This is a very nice looking book.

FEYDEL (Gabriel)
Paris, Garnery, an VII [1799]. Martin & Walter, 13429. Monglond, IV, 795. However, he gained this position through patronage, hard work, and a talent for administration, and his influence and reforms at the Admiralty were incredibly important in the early professionalisation of the Royal Navy. Despite his extensive political career, Pepys is best known today as a notable diarist. Indeed Samuel Pepys's diary was written between the years 1660 and 1669, and is regarded as one of the most important primary sources for the English Restoration period. CROWLEY, Aleister (With an Introduction and Epilogue by Count Vladimir Svareff).
Privately Printed at the Chiswick Press, London, 1903. Softcover, (viii) + 36pp (latter eccentrically paginated) Quarto (11 x 9 inches). Original off-white Japanese vellum wrappers with title enclosed in ornamental border printed in gold on upper wrapper, over plain card covers. Printed in Caxton antique type on handmade paper. Rubricated title page. Unusual. This copy from the library of Gabriel Montenegro Vargas ('Frater Zopiron') a IX degree member of the O.T.O., and the last person to be initiated in Agape Lodge. With his bookplate on the front pastedown. According to Duncombe-Jewell only 162 copies of "Ahab" were printed, 2 on vellum, 10 on Japanese Vellum, and 150 thus, on handmade paper. The book has a dedication in verse to 'G.C.J.', George Cecil Jones, Crowley's friend and mentor in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn: the poem Ahab was written by Crowley whilst visiting another old Golden Dawn associate, Alan Bennett, at Akyab in Burma. The book itself is effectively a companion to Crowley's 'Jezebel' (1898) which is almost identical in size, print, type, binding, etc. Crowley used the pseudonym Count Vladimir Svareff in both: though with his typical penchant for jokes 'Jezebel' was said to be "by Count Vladimir Svareff, Edited With an Introduction and Epilogue, by Aleister Crowley" - an order reversed in 'Ahab' - which was said to be "by Aleister Crowley, With an Introduction and Epilogue by Count Vladimir Svareff.' Largely unopened. A hint of darkening top the spine, still a near-fine copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

This 1903 original Publisher's hardback is in excellent, unrestored condition. The front and rear boards are very clean and bright with the gilt very bright to the front board. The spine is sturdy and unmarked and once again the gilt is bright. Internally, the front and rear end papers are in excellent condition and the hinges, unusually for 1903, are strong. The contents are complete, original, unmarked and in excellent condition, including a really good photo plate. A really nice copy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
