Astronaut Library 6 volume set plus matching seventh Title List Below Author: Illustrations by Description: Please note this listing is for seven volumes and not just the original 6 volume set. All certificates of authenticity and signatures are present. Buyers should beware that nearly an entire pallet of rejects from Easton Press found their way onto the secondary market and do not include certificates, in some cases no signature. When looking at other sellers make sure you know what you are getting and ask questions. This listing is for original volumes as issued from Easton Press and not the discards from the manufacturers that you may see elsewhere. Some books have more than one author and include more than one certificate and signature to represent each author. The series - In 1903 mankind (in his many millennia of existence) recorded his first flight at Kitty Hawk. In little over fifty years latter we were leaving our planetary orb. A few short years after that we set foot on another terrestrial sphere. These are the seminal volumes of that early history of maned space flight from the American perspective. Given they are leather bound and signed, there isn't much else out there like it from any publisher. As these brave men pass away, you can be certain there will be no more collections like this either. Achieved at a time of only the most rudimentary computers, this is the time of the original Test Pilot Space Cowboys. Pa … [Click Below for Full Description]

ERAGNY PRESS. WHITE, Diana. ADAMS, Katherine.
London: Eragny Press, 1903. Wood engraved frontispiece designed by Diana White, wood engraved border in green and 5 initials in red designed by Lucien Pissarro, all engraved by Esther Pissarro. One of 226 copies printed in red, black and green in Brook type on Arches Eragny paper. 12mo., Bound by Katherine Adams, with her monogram in gilt, in russet creshed morocco, spine with 5 raised bands and lettered in gilt, gilt fillet on turnins. Small area of rubbing on upper cover and top of headcap, offset from the turnins, otherwise an extremely good copy. An early example of Katherine Adams binding who was a pupil of Sarah Prideaux and worked for a time with Douglas Cockerell, although she was really self taught as this training only lasted for 4 months. She began binding on her own in 1901 receving her first commission from William Morris and bound for the greatest collectors and printers of her day. Her bindings are known for their techincial skill and the excellence of her gilding. Esther Pissarro and Diana White had been friends since art school and Esther decided to publish her The Descent of Ishtar, based on an ancient Assyrian tale, which had been published in the New Review in 1897. Unusually the frontispiece, which shows Ishtar's lover, Tammuz, in the Underworld was by the author rather than Lucien, who didn't really like what he called her 'Neo-Pre-Raphaelite' work. With the booklabel of the collectors Marie-Louise and Samuel Rosenthal and label of New York dealer Philip Duschnes. .

Oskar Hecker [E.A. Wilson, R.F. Scott, Terra Nova association]
P. Stankiewicz, Berlin, 1903. 4to; pp. [4], 136, 9 plates (some folding; one photographic print). COPY USED IN PREPARATION FOR SCIENTIFIC WORK ON SCOTT'S LAST EXPEDITION. From the library of Charles Darwin’s son G.H. Darwin, himself a noted geophysicist, astronomer and mathematician. Loosely laid in is a note in the hand of E.A. Wilson requesting that the book be returned to him at his London address, or given directly to Darwin in Cambridge. This copy is therefore unique evidence of the preparations for scientific work on the Terra Nova expedition: C.S. Wright later published extensive geophysical researches, citing the evidence and instruments described in this book. E.A. Wilson was Chief of Scientific Staff for Terra Nova and must have acted as intermediary, securing the copy from Darwin. (As Wilson was on the Discovery expedition when the book was published, it is clear that Darwin lent the book to Wilson while he was preparing for the Terra Nova voyage, which sailed from Cardiff in 1910.) The present work, by the German seismologist Oskar Hecker, is an account of the determination of gravity across the Atlantic ocean; see references in C.S. Wright, Determinations of Gravity, British Antarctic Expedition 1910–13 (London, 1921), eg. p. 3, 8, etc. This is an elegant quarto volume with numerous tables and nine plates bound at the rear. Amongst the plates is a folded pouch containing an original stereographic photograph of the pendulum apparatus used in the study. Very good condition: cloth binding well preserved, with very minor bumps to the corners; internally very good t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Forbes, Henry O., ed.
Liverpool: Free Public Museums, Henry Young & Sons; London: E. H. Porter, 1903. First edition. Large 8vo. pp. xlvii, 598; 34 lithographic plates (including a map and 24 chromolithographs after original sketches by P. Smith, H. Gronvold, J. Green and others); some spotting or foxing to plates, previous owner's armorial bookplate, generally very good in the original green buckram, somewhat faded and marked on spine. This rare work, published as a Special Bulletin of the Liverpool Museums , offers results from the joint British Museum-Liverpool Museum expedition to Socotra (Sokotra) in 1898-9. The island, the largest in the eponymous archipelago, lies off the Horn of Africa south by about 240 miles from the Arabian peninsula, and 120 miles east of the coast of Africa. Politically controlled from Aden for much of its recent history, Socotra's relative isolation in the Arabian Sea means that it contains a high proportion of endemic species. The present work provides a narrative of the journey as an opening chapter, followed by more technical chapters on the mammals, bids, reptiles, amphibia, insects, and concluding with a section on the geology. The contributors includes foremost experts of the day, and the illustrations display work by some of the finest natural history artists of the period. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

1903. ***Copy of my photos, formats, graphics, my written text is prohibited. Ebay may drop listings with infractions. I review content regularly. Astronaut Library 6 volume set plus matching seventh Title List Below Author: Illustrations by Description: Please note this listing is for seven volumes and not just the original 6 volume set. The first six are likely all same signature number (928 out of 3,000) for the open ones and all came from the same collector, shipped from Easton Press at the same time. I cannot guarantee the number of the sealed volumes, but I can assure they came from the same source and not pieced together as a collection. The seventh book was not offered together with the set, but matches the set. These are the seminal volumes of that … [Click Below for Full Description]

At sea, n.d., 1903. Folio bifolium, 4 pages of lithographed text and 3 original watercolors, 1 original pen & ink drawing. Removed. This amusing piece of shipboard printing was done aboard a passenger ship traveling from Bombay - probably to England. It was published after they reached Aden, a voyage of six days. This is a prospectus for the paper which "if possible ... will be published every Monday and Thursday. This effort is merely an introduction to the first issue." Events covered in this preliminary issue include the rough passage from Bombay, a bridge tournament, two concerts, and "the wonders of the mighty deep, such as jelly fish, flying fish, kippered fish & all sorts of fish - This is the Sea Sarpint as seen by our special artist at 3 g.m" (see illustration). A pencil note at the bottom of the last page reads "H.M. - Hired Man from Sardinia, April, 1903."

HARNETT, William Michael (1848-1892)
Covington, Kentucky: Donaldson Art and Sign Company, 1903. Chromolithograph. Repaired tear at top. Considered the father of American trompe l'oeil painting, William Michael Harnett began his career in 1865 when he began to practice the engraver's trade. In 1871 he moved to New York and studied at the National Academy of Design at Cooper Union. It was by the mid-1870's that he first began to exhibit at the National Academy of Design and at the Philadelphia Centennial. By 1880 Harnett had realized his lifelong dream of traveling to Europe to study in the best art centers there. He went to London, then to Frankfurt, then in 1881 to Munich where he lived for four years. Shortly after his return to the United States, Harnett painted The Old Violin, the most famous of all his single-object pictures. Its fame was spread by the chromolithograph produced by publisher Frank Tuchfarber of Cincinnati, who purchased the original oil painting from Harnett at the 13th Annual Industrial Exposition in 1886. Frank Tuchfarber was responsible for some of the finest American chromolithographs produced in the 19th century. The Old Violin is indeed an extraordinary achievement and one that was undoubtedly Tuchfarber's masterpiece. It was produced from no fewer than 17 separate stones and printed on metal, glass or paper. Copies of the print exist with either Tuchfarber's name at the lower right or, with the name of the Donaldson Art Sign Company, as in this issue. The present copy is a printer's proof that, unlike issued impressions, is not trimmed to the image; it retains its … [Click Below for Full Description]

Diebold, A.J. (Alfred), Jr
1903. Small 8vo. Preserved in a 4-flap lig-free case. Highly curious vernacular library catalogue of a private collection of books on lumber and forestry, thoughtfully arranged; the contents were typed on separate slips and inserted into an old six-ring binder (now worn). Vernacular library catalogues are uncommon; in our opinion, they merit further research as they provide a more balanced view of what people were ACTUALLY READING. Catalogues of working libraries are particularly interesting. This is clearly Diebold's home-made catalogue of his own lumber library; for instance Diebold describes Capt. Barker's 1903 "Lake Forest As I Have Known Them" as being "autographed by the author." Diebold continues: "Autobiography of a lumberman and guide in Northern New England. Good technical descriptions of working logs through the lakes with booms." There are 26 detailed descriptions of logging books dating from 1851 to 1952; following is an index (short titles) consisting of 9 leaves arranged into categories: Forestry, Anecdotes, Technical, and History. Alfred J. Diebold (1879-1966), a wealthy professional forester, resided in Pittsburg. He was treasurer and co-owner of the Forest Lumber Co. and of the Hassinger Lumber Co., and a partial owner of Diebold Investment Co. He served on the boards of many professional organizations, such as the National Wholesale Lumber Dealers' Association.
