DOVES PRESS
Hammersmith, London: Doves Press, 1903. Two bifolia from the Doves Bible, printed on Vellum, from volume II, a fine text that concludes with the colophon leaf on which are the names of the printers T. J. Cobden-Sanderson and Emery Walker. Initial capitals in red. Comprising 2 conjugate leaves, first leaf signed 2k. Six pages text, plus colophon, paged 513-518, [6, colophon (verso blank)]. Folio. Some rippling and soiling as usual. Provenance: sold by Philip C. Duschnes, 806 Lexington Ave., preserved in his folder. Item #404283 LEAVES ON VELLUM ARE VERY SCARCE: only two complete sets of the Doves Bible were printed on vellum (plus a "retree" (imperfectly prepared vellum) copy comprised of rejected sheets, according to Tomkinson). One bifolium on vellum has appeared at auction in the past thirty years, and we are aware of one other selling privately through the trade. Neither contained the colophon - and therefore did not feature the names of the celebrated printers T. J. Cobden-Sanderson and Emery Walker - and were from less textually-rewarding books of the Bible. An excellent specimen from the rarest state of a twentieth century landmark of fine printing, with the colophon for the second volume, thus including the names of the printers. END PAPERS, RARE 1902 COPYRIGHT! The First 2 years of the LONDON Publication of "The TALE of PETER RABBIT" have reference books about the various Printings/evolution of changes. I'm fascinated by it myself. Now, excluding the impossible First Private Printings in Late 1901 & Early 1902 from the realm of possibility for we mere mortals, the First few Original Warne Trade Printings are one of my joys to study - and even more to Find! Most collector's know that the First few Warne Printings (late 1902 - mid 1903) were done with patterned leaf end papers and had 97 pages with all illustrations in Color (Private Printings were B&W). The distinction between the printings was the Board Color. The last of these 4 printings changed "wept" to "shed". NOTE: NONE of These Printings had a COPYRIGHT DATE (on the rear of the Title Page)! Now, here is where it gets interesting!! All References deal with the Change in Format in Late 1903 from 97 pages to 85 pages with 4 fewer Illustrations, and the all important introduction of Color Illustrated End Papers. This is the book that mortals may hope to find and own...one of the first reduced Format (Some refer to it as the Second Edition because of that, but it is essentially the same book with all of the story identical to the Original with that one error correction - I lea … [Click Below for Full Description]

The remaining sets were passed to John Murray and were reissued with new title pages, still dated 1903, in 1917. This is one of those 490 sets. ------ Green and Gibson's bibliography of the works of Conan Doyle states; "The author considered this edition of his works to be of great importance: he revised parts, and added notes and a number of special introductions. He remarks in the preface that it had for some time been his ambition to have such a collection. Because of the author's friendship with Reginald Smith, he agreed to sign the thousand copies of the English issue. He was not, however, prepared to do the same for the American publisher, though he was asked. He made it known that he would only consider doing so for a considerable fee. Lamb, Charles, edited by William Macdonald; illustrated by C. E. Brock, Charles Robinson, Winifred Green and Herbert Railton
London: J. M. Dent. Published 1903, 12 volumes, finely bound in dark blue morocco gilt marbled boards, raised bands, gilt spines. About fine condition. All of the published illustrations produced for these volumes have been colored by hand; in addition, some of the old 18th-19th century copperplates insert have also been hand colored, most likely in 1903, but possibly back in the day. This is NOT the large paper edition limited to 200 copies, but the regular octavo edition, gussied up for the carriage trade. In most volumes there are well over a dozen inserted plates -- probably close to 150 inserted plates (possibly more) altogether. ROSSETTI, Olivia & Helen.] MEREDITH, Isabel, pseud.
London: Duckworth & Co., 1903. London: Duckworth & Co.,, 1903. Octavo. Original buff cloth, spine lettered in black, front board panelled in black. Spine slightly slanted and dulled, ends bruised and extremities rubbed, front board a little marked, hinges cracked but firm, front free endpaper renewed, half-title and rear endpapers browned, removal of label visible on rear pastedown, else a very good copy. First edition, first impression, of the Rossetti sisters' pseudonymously published semi-autobiographical memoir of their experiences as teenagers in the late 19th-century anarchist underground movement in London. The titular narrator Isabel Meredith shuns her comfortable Victorian home for the life of a revolutionary only to eventually reject anarchism on humanistic grounds, a move which reflects the sisters' own disillusionment with this particular strain of radical politics. There appear to have been at least three variant bindings: the presumed first issue red pictorial cloth, the present buff cloth trimmed in black, and a Times Book Club issue, red cloth with a "The Times 1783" roundel stamped in black to the lower spine. Olivia (1875-1960) and Helen (1879-1969) were the daughters of William Michael Rossetti, brother of Dante Gabriel and one of the seven founding members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. From 1891 they published and edited the anarchist newspaper The Torch from the basement of their family home, and thence from separate offices. This led to the establishment of a prominent salon which counted Kropotkin and Kravchinski among its members, and under th … [Click Below for Full Description]

The series - In 1903 mankind (in his many millennia of existence) recorded his first flight at Kitty Hawk. In little over fifty years latter we were leaving our planetary orb. A few short years after that we set foot on another terrestrial sphere. These are the seminal volumes of that early history of maned space flight from the American perspective. 1903 Steuben Glass Stockholders Ledger Book. - - - DISCUSSION: The first stockholders book for the famous Steuben Glass works, recording the purchase of shares by just 3 individuals- 1 share by Frederick Carder, many shares by T.G. Hawkes, and several shares by another individual in Corning, New York. A fascinating and unique piece of American glass history. One of the most famous and successful American glass manufacturers, Steuben Glass Works was founded in 1903 by English Master Designer Frederick Carder and Thomas G. Hawkes, who had already built the Hawkes Cut Glass Company. Carder had been designing glass for Stevens and Williams in England, but after being passed over for promotion at Stevens and Williams, he was ready to switch continents when Hawkes called. In 1918 Steuben was acquired by the Corning Glass Works and became the Steuben Division. In recent years it went through several conglomerate ownerships before one of them decided there was no real money in glass and shut it down. - - - PROVENANCE: From the collection of Mrs. Veronica Rita Forgett, an important collector of art glass and friend of Penrose Hawkes, who purchased much of the company archives from Hawkes. Sold to a collector at the January 26, 1990 Skinner Galleries auction of Mrs. Forgett's collection, and specifically mentioned in the introduction to the auction catalog. - - - DESCRIPTION & CONDITION: Oblong ledger. 14"x8.5". A back section, likely a form, has been neatly excised from each issue. Fair only. One of many English language magazines at the time, this particular title managed to last just one year before disappearing. In its inaugural issue it claims to offer "leading articles, current news, notes on readers, grammar, conversations, translations, and difficult questions answered." Also included are readers guides for the classics, such as Kipling's Kim and Sherlock Holmes. This is the only copy located outside of Japan. No other located copies are complete.

WATT, George.
Calcutta, Office of the Superintendent, Government Printing, India,1903. 8vo. Original publisher's cloth, gilt lettering to spine; pp. xv, 428, illustrated with plates after drawings and photographs; cloth marked, clearly traces of use, but still intact. Completely re-written and updated second edition. An exhaustive and important work on the welfare of tea plants by the author of the definitive 10-volume Dictionary of the Commercial Products of India (1889-90). Sir George Watt (1851-30) was a medical doctor who was trained at the Universities of Aberdeen and Glasgow. He accepted a medical post in India largely so that he could follow his love of botany. This second edition was considerably enlarged, and, as it says in the preface, 'almost entirely re-written'. It not only describes and suggests many solutions to the pests and blights of the tea plant, but at length takes a wider view of the whole husbandry of tea production from a practical and scientific standpoint. It became the tea planters' bible. - This is a rare survival: a handbook for tea planters in Assam and the Kangra Valley, used by a planter. Provenance: Ownership signature of J. Thomson Allen of Rakwana, Ceylon, whose family had a tea estate there. The book bears a bookseller's label on the rear endpaper of Plate Ltd. Colombo, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, a company from Bristol, Ceylon, founded in 1900 and specialising in photography, artists' materials, stationery and books.
