        The Light in Dends Wood

Greening and Co. 18 and 20 Cecil Court: London, 1903. 8vo. 116pp. + 8pp. ads. Publisher's green cloth titled and decorated in black and white with a moonlit forest scene. Minor edgewear, light bumping to spine ends, teetering on the edge of near fine but certainly a very good copy indeed of what must be a rather fragile book. Internally clean. A rather florid "With Compliments" has been written across the front flyleaf suggesting that either this is a publisher's presentation or that Mr. Dagless himself gave it to someone. Samples of Mr. Dagless's handwriting however remain elusive, in fact the only thing I can find referencing him at all is a mention to the effect that none other than Anthony Hope recommended him for entry into a list of "The Fifty Worst Books." A very scarce mystery novel. .

A Manuscript book of drawings Illustrated by Jimmy Smite: THE PAWKY PAWK'S BOOK of BEASTS "Unnatural Creatures". Dedicated by Kind Permission Joyce And Denis. The Author and The Illustrator.

Williams and Norgate. - Executed in about 1903 by Joyce perhaps for her or with her brother Denis (later Peter) or just her own pleasure. The images are clever and all original, even though some of the figures may resemble fantastical creatures seen in other stories or children's books since these were created in the early 1900's. This is one of the earliest representations of this sort of imaginative "creature creation" I have come across. Even Lewis Carroll, or Heinrich Hoffman's Struwwelpeter and similar illustrations in books, the figures were clearly anthropomorphic and recognizable animals. All in a 6p page school "Exercise Book" 36 ink illustrations + 2 loose, one done in watercolours. + 32 pages of verse and all the funny creatures have a title and explanation of what they are underneath. e. g. ; This is the Gripsolid:: It is especially remarkable for its purple body. It lives on the fruit of the Dingle Dongle Palm: When the Hollow Hills are Howling And the Mighty Mountains Mew. The Gripsolid goes skipping o'er the plain, The the Muskinoos are growling, He knows It's nothing new. For the Gripsolid is anything but sane. There's a Dingle-Dongle Palm Tree Growing not so far away With The gentle breezes tinkling the fruit And the Gripsolid goes calmlee Till he hears the music gay Then he rushes off and dons his dinner suit When he's duly done his dinner he struts off for a stroll Believing he's the greatest thing on earth, but he's just a silly sinner who is often very droll For who can justly judge of his own worth. Or; The Kinkinoo: Is known chiefly from travellers tales Some think it a bird, some think it an animal. It thinks itself a big bug. In the heart of darkets Africa. there lives the Kinkinoo He's Not At South Kensington, Nor is he at the Zoo. Nor is he known to many folk. only to me and you. When the Kinkinoo is hungry It takes a spiders web And plaits it up with bits of sticks And winds it round his head Then, when he's worn it for a week he eats it up on bread. Among the animals that live Within the forest dark Is the Crimplecromplecrumple A first cousin to the shark Who feeds upon the Kinkinoo When e'er he's on the lark The Young girl and boy this collection of rhymes and wild imaginings relates to were the children of Geoffrey Sydney William Owner of Williams and Norgate the London publishing house. A curious book is also included Oddle and Iddle; The Goblins of Aloe Shamba. 1912 by Lily Collier. This title is for sale on Abe-books and although scarce can be located. However this book is illustrated by a Joyce Crawshay Williams? and has a creature called a Tcha. A creature with exactly this name appears in the manuscript? As it came with this group of material is this name a pseudonym of Joyce Mary Williams? I have tried to secure a link for certain, but no information can be found on the author of the book, the supposedly authoress Lily Collier. There was dancer in a theatre group in about 1909 with this name, but no author with this name in any other publication? (Further research may prove fruitful and yield details I have been unable to find). With this book is an A4 size envelope with a group of Williams & Norgate headed personal correspondence and receipts, a small group of photographs of both the children including ones of them in uniform as both nurse and cadet at the time for the Great War c1915. The archive can be viewed at a mutually convenient place. I can send more photo's. I am sure the buyer will own the copyright to it all. Totally unique unpublished manuscript from a young lady with a literary association and family background. Provenance: Bought from the estate of Peter William in Aylsham in Norfolk in 1989 where he died and left all he owned to his "daily" or cook/housekeeper. But direct from the family ownership. NOT been seen by anyone since. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

NY: Camera Club of New York, 1903. First editions. Stieglitz, Alfred. 4tos., various paginations, with tipped-in photogravures and halftones, other illustrations in text. 18 Issues as follows: Volume II, No.1-4, bound by the Camera Club in green cloth with gilt emblem, with the original wrappers bound in; Vol. III, No.1-4; Vol. IV, No. 1-2, 4; Vol. V, No. 1-4; Vol. VI, No. 1-3. The individual issues are in the original printed wrappers with several of the blank spines either repaired or replaced. Vol. VI, No. 2 shows dampstaining on the blank margins and is lacking the printed label which was affixed to the front wrapper. Stieglitz's goal was to publish a magazine that would set a new standard of excellence in pictorial photography, which would in turn attract the finest photographers to The Camera Club's yearly salon. Stieglitz proposed selling advertisement space to fund a substantial beautifully illustrated periodical that would include photogravures representing some important achievements in pictorial photography, chosen not only from the club and America, but from the best material the world at large could offer. This policy soon had CAMERA NOTES regarded as one of the most significant and influential photographic journals of its time. However, there was a backlash from the club's membership, whose concern was that the journal was becoming an elitist publication whose contributors were mostly from outside the club itself. Under this mounting criticism, Stieglitz published his resignation from the editorship. CAMERA NOTES ceased publication in December 1903. It ran just three issues after Stieglitz resigned. The photogravures include: Ebony and Ivory by F.. Day; Study in Red by Robert Demachy; A Wet Night, Columbus Circle, New York by W.A. Fraser; Mending Nets by Alfred Stieglitz; Magdalen by Charles I. Berg; Portrait Study by Gertrude Käsebier; Portrait of F. Holland Day by Gertrude Käsebier; Spring by Clarence H. White; Scurrying Home by Alfred Stieglitz; A Street in Mentone by Robert Demachy; Beatrice by Mathilde Weil; Odalisque by Charles I. Berg; La Cigale by Emma J. Farnsworth; Lady with the Venus by Clarence H. White; The Manger by Gertrude Käsebier; Blessed art Thou Among Women by Gertrude Käsebier; The Dance by Rudolf Eickemeyer, Jr.; Telegraph Poles by Clarence H. White; At the Edge of the Woods-Evening by Clarence H. White; Portrait of Miss M. of Washington by Miss Rose Clark and Mrs. Elizabeth Flint Wade; Midst Steam and Smoke by Prescott Adamson; Intervale Winter By Wm. B. Post; Clytie by Wm. B. Dyer; Nude by Wm. W. Renwick; An Icy Night by Alfred Stieglitz; Spring by Alfred Stieglitz; Spring Showers, the Coach by Alfred Stieglitz; Spring Showers, the Sweeper by Alfred Stieglitz; Bad News by Edmund Stirling; Portrait by Clarence H. White; Winter Landscape by Rudolf Eickemeyer, Jr.; The Street by Dallett Fuguet; A Water Carrier - Cuba by H.A. Latimer; and others. Da Capo Press full facsimile edition of Volumes 1-4, in 2 cloth bound 4to. volumes, very good. $300.00.

The Apostles (Parts I & II) An Oratorio

First edition; 8vo; original cloth-backed decorated boards. Signed presentation copy from Elgar on Note page, "Edward Elgar: Birmingham Festival Oct: 14th 1903". There are a small number of amendments in blue pencil to the score, particularly to the first page, where there is a note 'no stops gt comp to explain'. The Apostles, contains many powerful and innovative musical ideas and makes extensive use of leitmotifs - Jaeger identified 92 of them - drawing inevitable comparisons with Wagner. A number of critics consider the work to contain finer music than Gerontius and regard The Apostles as the pinnacle of Elgar's musical achievement. A fascinating document signed by Elgar at the first performance of the work and used by one of the performers. Very good, a little rubbed, front hinge weak, book sellers stamp to foot of upper board, where there is also an ownership signature.

Eigenh. Brief mit U. Berlin, 1. VII. 1903.

1903. 7 ½ SS. 8vo.

1903. Large hand-coloured four-sheet plan. Pen and ink, graphite and watercolour on paper laid on canvas. Framed and glazed. Dimensions: app. 90 x 170 cm (sheet); 105 x 205 cm (frame). Large manuscript plan in beautiful colour; a unique witness to Vanderbilt's passion and ambitions. A member of the prominent American Vanderbilt family, William Kissam (1849-1920) managed railroads and was also a horse breeder. He was one of the founders of The Jockey Club and the owner of a successful racing stable. In 1896, Vanderbilt built the American Horse Exchange at 50th Street (Manhattan). In World War II, the United States liberty ship SS William K. Vanderbilt was named in his honour. - This impressive plan represents the horse-racing stable and track at the chateau, which Vanderbilt built in 1906, with the help of Henri Guillaume and Pierre Sardou, architects. He purchased in 1903 the land in an area of Poissy called Les Gresillons, 20 miles outside Paris. At the time, he ran a breeding operation in Deauville, making the location, also called "Carrieres-sous-Poissy", particularly convenient since it is on the way from Paris to Deauville. The hippodrome comprised three oval tracks, the outer of which measured 2400 metres, as well as a straight track. A long wall separated the racing areas from the Chateau St-Louis where the Vanderbilts lived, called the Chemin Plat, now known as Avenue Vanderbilt. With the beginning of World War I, the racing stables were shut down and eventually sold. The Chateau St. Louis is now the corporate headquarters for a local quarry, which spreads over the land previously occupied by the hippodrome. As of today, only the residential building known as "Chateau Grésillons" still stands and is currently being restored. - Provenance: Ralph Esmerian (New York jeweler).

1903. VIII, 118, (2) SS. - Gutes, sauberes Exemplar.

Portland: Portland: Thomas B. Mosher, 1903, 1903. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Very Good. Original sketches and music compositions in a copy of Deidre and the Sons of Usna. Tall 12mo, soft leather coves, 975 copies, Gelder paper, with a program for A Keltic Evening of Irish folklore and song held on May 11, 1906 in Manhattan laid-in. By notice in the program, stating that books of Macleod's are "sold at the door', we deduce this was a souvenir of the evening, the attendee soliciting contributions from the program's participants. In the front prelims, there are: handwritten quote from Yeats by the evening's emcee Charles Johnson (an author of Irish history at the time); a finely rendered image in pencil of a female dancer in diaphanous dress by Arthur B. Davies (member of The Eight), signed lower right corner on the fly; and, a page and half of musical composition of folk musicologist Henry Gilbert signed by him. On the rear fly there is a pencil sketch of a middle-age woman in evening cloak initialed "JWA" who we assume to be artist J. Alden Weir given his association with Davies in the Arts Students League.

The Riddle Of The Sands ( First UK Edition)

The First UK printing published by London, Smith Elders & 1903.The BOOK is in VERY GOOD+ condition. 336pp. + 4pp ads. Publisher's decorated black cloth with titles in white to the spine though quite rubbed as is lamentably often the case.Light bumping to extremities, rubbing to spine not affecting the integrity of the book.Decorated boards sharp, a little bit of inoffensive wear here and there.Internally free from inscriptions and erasures. There is the expected occasional light spotting.Illustrated with fold out maps and charts which are all present.Frontispiece folding chart a trifle creased with some light soiling to the title page.Housed in a custom slander box.A very good copy of the first edition of a book somewhat contentiously described as the first modern espionage novel, vying for the title with Kipling's Kim, published two years earlier. Originally written after he returned injured from action in South Africa and first published in 1903 the novel of imminent conflict with Germany was highly influential and is actually credited with the founding of British naval bases at Invergordon and Scapa Flow; newly regarded as strategically important after examination of the scenarios in Childer's novel. Childers was of course a staunch advocate of Irish Home Rule and was found guilty of possessing a firearm in contravention of the Irish Emergency Powers Resolution and sentenced to death by firing squad in 1922.The book was adapted in 1979 into a movie starring Michael York and Simon MacCorkindale. An exceptionally scarce and important title to find in any condition.Highly collectible with such attributes.

The Diaries of Rev. W. E. Preston Haas of Media, PA and Bertha Haas: 81 volumes (Containg the years 1903 - 1965)

Handwritten diaries, 1903-1964. Hardcover. Very Good. 87 volumes. An incredible collection of the life of Rev. W.E. Preston Haas (11 April 1903 - April 1965) and his mother Bertha Haas. Small standard diaries. Contains the years 1903, 1908-1964. Multiple volumes for a number of years. Haas was the pastor at Lima United Methodist Church. He lived off Middletown Rd in Delaware Co. (Near Media) Pennsylvania with his family. Haas also worked in Methodist ministry in Philadelphia and Bristol. The diaries have hand written entries of the each dayâ??s work for 57 years. Haas's hand writing is in very legible, clean ink. Most of the entries deal with the service he gave to his community and his day to day life. The names of local families he worked with at births, weddings, funerals, christenings, convocations, communions, remembrances of those lost in the two world wars give a vision of this man's life. His charitable work with the Old Fellow's (IOOF, he served as Grand Master in 1946) was also an important part of his life. The names, addresses, phone numbers, birthdays, and deaths of the members of his congregation are recorded. Most the entries are mundane, but a number of entries in the 1950s deal with the Soviet Union. Some diaries have color maps of the world. It is interesting to see how borders changed during Haas's lifetime. Additionally, the collection includes a earlier diaries and legers by Bertha E. Haas (Preston's mother who lived in Burlington NJ, b. 1880?) (in 1908 Preston received a telescope for his Birthday). SN 197-30-7860. A wealth of genealogical and local Methodist history.

1903. Small 4to, 8vo, and oblong 8vo. Altogether 4½ pp. To John Henderson, Secretary of the National Liberal Club, on invitations and publications: "[...] Jacob has transmitted your request for a speech. Frankly I had much rather not speak. If I did that sort of thing at all well I would be very glad to do it, but I am - at this sort of thing - heavy, self-conscious, dull & disinteresting. No one would be the happier for my suffering and it would convert an occasion to which I look forward with the most festive anticipation, into a task and a terror [...]" (20 March 1903). - About the treatment of the political activist Clarence Henry Norman (1886-1974): "[...] why is Norman leaving the club? Is he being expelled for any reason? Or has he simply resigned his membership? [...]" - "[...] Mr C. H. Norman writes to complain that his membership of the N.L.C. has been 'cancelled' on account of his anti-war letters. I am half-shocked at this. He impresses me as being quite insane upon the war question but quite honest & I fail to see the justification for this expulsion of an esteemed most desirable member [...]" (undated, but c. 1914). - "Dear Mr Henderson, Yes I'm sorry. But do you know I didn't enter the N.L.C. from one year's end to another. I have had to go through my list of annual subscriptions & cut them down. And there it is! [...]" (13 April 1932).

1903 - 8vo., 2 volumes in half gilt ruled brown morocco, spine panelled and lettered in gilt, top edge gilt. A very good set. A handsomely printed edition of Varavenargues's maxims in parallel french and english text. Luc de Clapiers, marquis de Vauvenargues was a minor French writer and moralist. He died at age 31, in broken health, having published the year priorâ€"anonymouslyâ€"a collection of essays and aphorisms with the encouragement of Voltaire, his friend. He first received public notice under his own name in 1797, and from 1857 on, his aphorisms became popular. In the history of French literature, his significance lies chiefly in his friendship with Voltaire (20 years his senior). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        M. Manilii Astronomicon. Liber Primus [-Quintus]. Recensuit et enarravit A.E. Housman.

Apud Grant Richards, Londinii [London] 1903 - FIRST EDITION, 5 vols., 8vo, pp. lxxv, [i], 103 [1]; xxxi, [i], 123, [1]; xxviii, [ii], 72; xvii, [i], 130; xlvi, [ii], 199, [1]. Original printed boards backed in cloth, printed paper labels to spines. The cloth spine of vol. 1 largely defective and the stitching practically loose, vol. 2 and vol. 5 spines also worn, boards and labels rubbed. The Nisbet family copy, with the pencil ownership inscriptions in the first three volumes of R.G. Nisbet and notes of reading dates (all within 1966) in the hand of his son, R.G.M. Nisbet in the first four; the last volume without inscriptions but with a Blackwell's bookseller's label and occasional pencil marks in the text. The first edition of A.E. Housman's magisterial edition of Manilius, printed in small numbers over 27 at Housman's own expense; the first volume only sold out its run of four hundred copies by the time the last appeared because, Housman recalled, 'it found purchasers among the unlearned, who had heard that it contained a scurrilous preface and hoped to extract from it a low enjoyment' An abridgement in one volume followed in 1932 and a second edition in 1937. This copy has signs of ownership from two notable Latinists: Robert George Nisbet (1872-1955) was lecturer in the Humanities at Glasgow; his son Robin George Murdoch Nisbet (1925-2013) also studied at Glasgow before taking a second BA at Balliol College as a Snell Exhibitioner, going on to become Corpus Professor of Latin at Oxford.         Important Collection of Letters and Telegrams to the Composer

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. A fascinating collection of 14 autograph letters and cards and 2 telegrams addressed to the important French composer, dated between 1903 and 1917, from musicians and other artistic figures of the era. The letters, from correspondents including conductors, critics, dancers, composers, and visual artists, mention the very positive reception of Debussy's works during the last years of his life, including his 1903 nomination as a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur, the Chicago premiere of his opera Pelléas et Melisande, and Toscanini's 1911 performance of La Mer; other works discussed include his ballet Jeux, the cantata L'enfant prodigue, and his work for piano, L'isle joyeuse. Letters range from 4 x 2.5 inches to 5.25 x 8.25 inches and are overall in very good to fine condition, with some light toning and age wear. All letters in French.Contents:Three letters congratulate Debussy on his nomination to the Légion d'honneur in 1903: one autograph note on the visiting card of conductor Edouard Colonne (Paris, [February 1903], 1 p.); one ALS  from the soprano Lucienne Bréval (n.p., [February 4, 1903], 4 pp.) which also mentions her desire to sing one of Debussy's mélodies with orchestra; and one ALS from the architect Charles Plumet (Paris, n.d., 1 p.).Two telegrams dated June 11, 1910 send congratulations to Debussy on the successful performance of his Pelléas et Mélisande in Chicago from the conductor, Cleofonte Campanini, and the director general of the Chicago Grand Opera Company, Andreas Dippel: "Four thousand people were impressed and touched. Our congratulations."Two letters send congratulations to Debussy on the performance of his La Mer under Toscanini in Turin in 1911. On a photograph postcard (Turin, September 30, 1911), the composer Leone Sinigaglia writes that "It would have been a joy for you, a lasting memory. Toscanini put his whole soul into it, all his intelligence, and all his will. His execution of your admirable masterpiece was prodigious. The public, wary at the beginning (as you may imagine! you know this well), was won over -- at the end it was a great success, which was repeated yesterday evening..." The critic Giuseppe Depanis (Turin, October 12, 1911, 2 pp.) writes that "not only was the second presentation (Toscanini) of La Mer received with the same good favor as the first, but Vincent D'Indy also performed Nuages andFêtes in his concert on the 10th of the month with great success."An autograph letter from Nadejda Rimsky-Korsakov (St Petersburg, August 20, 1911, 1 p., with envelope) thanks Debussy for his telegram, and mentions in reference to the Ballets Russes' adaptation of her husband's famous work Scheherazade that "the appearance before the artistic Parisian public of my husband's works, changed and transformed into ballet, caused me great pain last summer and this time."  An autograph letter from the caricaturist Beppe Fabiano (Paris, May 29, 1912, 2 pp.) confesses to Debussy that "I have just exhibited your portrait at the Salon des Humanistes -- in a series of celebrated composers -- without asking your permission beforehand. Fearing I may have overstepped, I would be delighted if you would forgive me."<br style="">A short autograph letter from the sculptor Denys Puech (Paris, June 4, 1912, 1 p.) mentions L'après-midi d'un faune. A short autograph letter from the sculptor [Albert] Bartholomé (Budapest, May 25, 1913, 1 p.) informs Debussy that his cantata L'enfant prodigue "was admirably executed by truly passionate performers. I was able to obtain the poster from the theater and will be pleased to send it to you." The Russian ballerina and soloist with the Ballets Russes, Ludmilla Chollar writes to Debussy about her role in Jeux, in which she starred with Nijinsky and Tamara Karsavina (London, June 26, [1913], 2 pp.). She thanks the composer for the "the most beautiful memories which I could bring from Paris: the very kind words with which you dedicated Jeux, your photography, and some measures of my role [...] If I take from the creation of Jeux one exquisite and ineffable memory, it is to you that I owe it, to your work, and to the happy chance that I met you, away from the mirage of celebrities, an artist as great as you, whose work is dear to me above all others."<br style="">An autograph letter from the composer Ildebrando Pizzetti (Florence, September 17, 1913, 1 p., with envelope) asks Debussy to comment on his new composition: "You would do me a great honor, Maître, if you would send me a few words on the subject, but of course with no obligation on your part to give me compliments if my musical work does not interest you!"An interesting wartime letter from the Italian conductor Bernardino Molinari (Rome, September 18, 1915, 4 pp.) calls on Debussy's patriotic feelings to ask him to collaborate with his orchestra: "I still remember what you said to me yourself here in Rome, about "L'isle joyeuse," when you gave me hope that you might make a transcription for orchestra. If you have the desire and the time, I would be very flattered to have the score, to perform it during the next concert season at the Augusteo. You understand that in this season we very much wish to form a program in which our allies in France figure prominently. In a political moment like this one, where the souls of all the Allied nations are unified, and united into one ideal, all of us at the Academie ask you for your valid support in the coming season." He goes on to apologize that because of the war, he will be unable to offer the same fee as the previous time, and reports that performances of Debussy's works around Italy have been very successful: "This shows, with evidence, that your musical language speaks to great and small, touching the heartstrings of all." An autograph letter from the composer and musicologist Jean D'Udine (Paris, April 27, 1917, 3 pp.) invites Debussy to one of Udine's salons, despite Debussy's known disdain for his school of dance: "I know you have no sympathy for rhythmic gymnastics, which seem to you, you have written, 'a very disagreeable domestication of rhythm.' I believe that you are wrong, and that they are rather an emancipation of rhythm, when taught well. Without any hostility on your part towards the method which I teach with conviction, I would like to ask you to honor with your presence one of the evenings which I am hosting at present. You would there see danced, with extreme love and respect by one of my students, a remarkable artist, your beautiful dances for chromatic harp [...] I did not want to give these evenings (April 28, and May 3 and 5) without informing you, pour memoire, and without letting you know that it is sometimes where one feels the least loved that one is actually the most seriously and profoundly loved..."The violinist and composer Francesco Guarnieri writes (N.p., October 17, 1917, 2 pp., on black-bordered stationery) to ask Debussy for a signed copy of his violin sonata, which he will perform in Italy, and also recalls a much earlier performance of Debussy's famous quartet, at which Debussy gave him a copy of the score.

Whigham is probably best remembered as a prominent amateur golfer, winner of the second and third US Amateur Championships, and author of "How to play Golf", the first golf instruction manual illustrated from action photographs. - Ink ownership stamp of Charles C. Etiquette collée sur contreplat de la page de garde : Brooklyn Public Library. Bought from the income of the Ramsay fund.
