The Durbar [of 1903]. [With special descriptions of The Press Camp - The Rajputana Camp - The Punjab Camp - The Baroda Camp - The Sikkim Camp - The Central India Camp - The Bombay and Imperial Cadet Camp - The S.S.Arabia etc.].

Quarto. XII, 210 pages. With 100 fine coloured plates, including frontispiece (all illustrations including their original tissue guards). Hardcover / Beautiful original ivory buckram with ornaments to front board and spine. No.14 of the Deluxe Edition. Signed by Mortimer Menpes. The first layer with the Frontispiece cleanly detached, otherwise in very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. The Durbar of 1903 was held to celebrate the succession of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra as Emperor and Empress of India. The two full weeks of festivities were devised in meticulous detail by Lord Curzon. It was a dazzling display of pomp, power and split second timing. Neither the earlier Delhi Durbar of 1877, nor the later Durbar held there in 1911, could match the pageantry of Lord Curzons 1903 festivities. In a few short months at the end of 1902, a deserted plain was transformed into an elaborate tented city, complete with temporary light railway to bring crowds of spectators out from Delhi, a post office with its own stamp, telephone and telegraphic facilities, a variety of stores, a Police force with specially designed uniform, hospital, magistrates court and complex sanitation, drainage and electric light installations. Souvenir guide books were sold and maps of the camping ground distributed. Marketing opportunities were craftily exploited. Special medals were struck, firework displays, exhibitions and glamorous dances held. Edward VII, to Curzons disappointment, did not attend but sent his brother, the Duke of Connaught who arrived with a mass of dignitaries by train from Bombay just as Curzon and his government came in the other direction from Calcutta. The assembly awaiting them displayed possibly the greatest collection of jewels to be seen in one place. Each of the Indian princes was adorned with the most spectacular of his gems from the collections of centuries. Maharajahs came with great retinues from all over India, many of them meeting for the first time while the massed ranks of the Indian armies, under their Commander-in-Chief Lord Kitchener, paraded, played their bands and restrained the crowds of common people. On the first day, the Curzons entered the area of festivities, together with the maharajahs, riding on elephants, some with huge gold candelabras stuck on their tusks. The durbar ceremony itself fell on New Year's Day and was followed by days of polo and other sports, dinners, balls, military reviews, bands, and exhibitions. The worlds press dispatched their best journalists, artists and photographers to cover proceedings. The popularity of movie footage of the event, shown in makeshift cinemas throughout India, is often credited with having launched the countrys early film industry. The India Post issued a set of two commemorative souvenir sheets with special cancellation struck on 1 January 1903 - 12 noon, a much sought after item for the stamp collectors today. The event culminated in a grand coronation ball attended only by the highest ranking guests, all reigned over by Lord Curzon and more so by the stunning Lady Curzon in her glittering jewels and regal peacock gown. (Wikipedia) Mortimer Luddington Menpes (22 February 1855 1 April 1938), was an Australian-born artist, author, printmaker and illustrator. Menpes was born in Port Adelaide, South Australia, the second son of property developer James Menpes, who with his wife Ann arrived in South Australia from London on the Moffatt in December 1839. Educated at Adelaide Educational Institution, he attended classes at Adelaide's School of Design, and did some excellent work as a photo-colourist, but his formal art training began at the School of Art in London in 1878, after his family had moved back to England in 1875. Edward Poynter was a fellow student at the school. Menpes first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1880, and, over the following 20 years, 35 of his paintings and etchings were shown at the Academy. Menpes set off on a sketching tour of Brittany in 1880, during which he met James McNeill Whistler. He became Whistler's pupil, and at one stage shared a flat with him at Cheyne Walk on the Chelsea Embankment in London. He was taught etching by Whistler, whose influence, together with that of Japanese design, is evident in his later work. Menpes became a major figure in the etching revival, producing more than seven hundred different etchings and drypoints, which he usually printed himself. As early as 1880, a selection of ten of his drypoint portraits, donated to the British Museum by Charles A. Howell, brought him critical acclaim. A visit to Japan in 1887 led to his first one-man exhibition at Dowdeswell's Gallery in London. Menpes moved into a property at 25 Cadogan Gardens, Sloane Square, designed for him by A. H. Mackmurdo in 1888 and decorated it in the Japanese style. Whistler and Menpes quarrelled in 1888 over the interior design of the house, which Whistler felt was a brazen copying of his own ideas. The house was sold in 1900, and Menpes moved to Kent. In 1900, after the outbreak of the Boer War, Menpes was sent to South Africa as a war artist for the weekly illustrated magazine Black and White. After the end of the war in 1902 he travelled widely, visiting Burma, Egypt, France, India, Italy, Japan, Kashmir, Mexico, Morocco, and Spain. Many of his illustrations were published in travel books by A & C Black. His book on the Delhi Durbar was an illustrated record of the commemoration in Delhi of the coronation of King Edward VII. For the last 30 years of his life, Menpes retired to Iris Court, Pangbourne from where he managed his Purley-on-Thames business, "Menpes Fruit Farms". He built forty large greenhouses in which to grow carnations and eight cottages to accommodate the farm workers. He died in Pangbourne in 1938. Menpes became a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers (RE) in 1881, Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) in 1885, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours (RI) in 1897 and Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI) in 1899. An exhibition of his work, The World of Mortimer Menpes: Painter, Etcher, Raconteur opened at the Art Gallery of South Australia on 14 June 2014. Menpes, his parents and three of his siblings moved to England in 1875, never to return to Australia. However five of Menpes' sisters remained in South Australia. In 1875, Menpes married fellow Australian Rosa Mary Grosse (d. 23 August 1936) in London. They had a son, Mortimer James (b. 1879) and two daughters, Rose Maud Goodwin and Dorothy Whistler. Menpes painted in both oil and watercolour. He developed a special form of colour etching, used to illustrate his books, and founded the Menpes Press of London and Watford. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Menpes travelled Europe, making copies of paintings by the old masters which he used as a basis for a series of prints published in 1905 and 1909. In 1911, Menpes donated 38 of the copies in oil to the Australian Government these works have subsequently become part of the Pictures Collection at the National Library of Australia. Some pencil sketches by Menpes were published in the Adelaide Observer in 1903. They are portraits of Sir Charles Todd, Sir James Fergusson and the Rev. Canon Green Dean Marryat, Sir Anthony Musgrave and Dr. Schomburgk Charles Mann, Sir Arthur Blyth and William Townsend Sir William Milne, Thomas Playford and George Stevenson, Jun. (Wikipedia)

Asakaya-Shoten, Tokyo 1903 - Folio (47,4 x 32,8). 5 numbered plates in chromolithography. This installment contains the plates I, V, XXI, XI and VI. There are two leaves of explanatory text each for plates I, V and VI, and one leaf each for plates XXI and XI. All leaves with illustrations in black and white, the explanatory text in Japanese. There are also two leaves of smaller size in japanese, not explaining any illustrations, but giving some information about this atlas. The loose text leaves and the loose plates housed in a new cassette with a title label. We join the original cassette left to the label a handwritten dedication to a Japanese medical doctor (Dr. Mika) by Keizo Dohi. - First edition. - Löser/Plewig/Burgdorf 235-244; Ehring 236. - Neither a complete atlas nor a single installment ever appeared in the trade. One of the greatest rarities in medical history especially in dermatology worldwide. The plates are of magnificent quality. Dohi was born on 9 June (after the moon calendar) in Echizen-fuchu (now Fukui prefecture) and died on 6 November 1931 (after the Gregorian calendar) in Tokyo. He was the second son of the physician Eshiwata, who died when he was young. Before completing medical school, he took the name of Dohi from his adoptive uncle. After studying medicine in the Royal University in Tokyo 1885 -1891 he received his medical degree and started 1891-1892 with surgical training in Tokyo. In 1893 Dohi made his first trip to Germany, working in the surgical clinic in Heidelberg under Vinzenz Czerny (Trautenau/Bohemia 1842-Heidelberg 1916), a famous surgeon active in the University of Heidelberg. From 1894-1896 he trained in Vienna under Moriz Kaposi and Isidor Neumann, sponsored by the Japanese government with the endorsement of Czerny. This was followed by further training and studies in dermatology in major European universities (Prague, Breslau, Berlin, Paris, Moscow, Bologna and Rome. In 1904 he accompanied Prince Komatsu to the coronation of King Edward VII of England and again visited many European dermatological centers. His third European trip from July 1910 to July 1911 took him to Bern, Breslau/ Wroclaw, Berlin, Frankfurt, Vienna and Paris. ¿ In 1898 he became Professor and Chairman of the new Department of Dermatology and Syphililology in Tokyo, also teaching urology. At that time dermatology was often combined with urology. In 1900 he founded the Japanese Dermatological Society, and in 1907 the Japanese Society for the Prevention of Sexually transmitted diseases (see also Löser/Plewig/Burgdorf). No copy in the big medical collections and no copy in the Karlsruher virtueller Katalog. Karlsruher virtueller Katalog is a book search engine administered by the library of the University of Karlsruhe. It searches a large number of catalogs of research libraries in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, as well as several important national libraries in other countries, and some large commercial catalogs. The KvK is said to encompass 500 million books and serial publications. According to a publisher¿s label inside the cassette this installment cost 3 Yen, the annual salary of a young policeman during that time. Produced by the Oshiba Shiro Company in Tokyo-Kanda and printed by Nomura Sojuro in Tokyo-Tsukiji. We offer this installment in a new cassette and join the original cassette (on its right half damaged rubbed, waterstained, defects to spine, wormholes). The new cassette, the plates and the text leaves in excellent condtion [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Original wrappers unfortunately detached, with tears and heavy wear; disbound, pages grouped in intact signatures; some toning, but internally in fine condition and overall good.<br style="">Grieg's Norwegian Peasant Dances resulted from a collaboration with the Hardanger-fiddle player Knut Dale and the violinist Johann Halvorsen. On the suggestion of Dale, who feared that the unwritten tradition of his instrument would be lost without being notated, Grieg asked Halvorsen to transcribe some of Dale's best fiddle tunes. Grieg then arranged these for piano, and both the violin and piano versions were published. Grieg wrote that he found the project "interesting, but but extremely difficult work," as expressing the folk idiom of the Hardanger fiddle through the medium of the piano presented unique problems, but writes in the introduction that "Those who can appreciate such music, will be delighted at the originality, the blending of fine, soft gracefulness with sturdy almost uncouth power and untamed wildness as regards melody and more particularly rhythm, contained in them."<br style="">The German-Dutch composer and pianist Julius Röntgen studied with Reinecke and Lachner and was a close associate of Grainger, Brahms, Grieg, Joachim, Nielsen and others. He spent many of his summer holidays in Denmark and maintained close friendships there. This score was likely gifted by Grieg to Röntgen after a stay at his Danish country house, Fuglsang, where Röntgen enjoyed hosting other musicians for long stays of swimming, boating, and chamber music.<br style="">A fine inscription from the Romantic Norwegian composer most celebrated for his Piano Concerto in A minor, for his incidental music to Ibsen's "Peer Gynt" (which includes Morning Mood and In the Hall of the Mountain King), and for his collection of piano miniatures, Lyric Pieces. <br>

        Great Benin.

Halifax: F. King & Sons, Ltd.,, 1903. Its Customs, Art and Horrors. Quarto (248 x 180 mm). Original red cloth over bevelled boards, spine lettered in gilt, vignette to front board gilt, top edge gilt, black coated endpapers. 275 illustrations to the text, from engravings and photographs. Contemporary bookseller's ticket (Thornton and Sons, Oxford) to front pastedown, departmental ink-stamp to front free endpaper verso and initial blank. Spine sunned with manuscript shelf-mark in gilt, extremities lightly bumped and rubbed, a few small marks to covers, bookplate skilfully removed from front pastedown. A very good copy. First edition, 320 copies printed, of this uncommon, still-authoritative account, based partly on the records of the author's brother, who served as medical officer to the punitive Benin Expedition of 1897, in which British troops under Sir Harry Rawson sacked Benin City and brought to an end the Kingdom of Benin: looting occurred on a grand scale, and such goods as were not auctioned off to defray war costs ended up in the British Museum. In 1878 Roth travelled to Australia on a commission to investigate the local sugar industry. "After leaving Australia in 1884, he settled in 1888 'in business' at Halifax, Yorkshire, England. In his spare time he prepared numerous manuscripts for publication and reorganized the chaotic Bankfield Museum ? His most notable publications include works based on information provided by others and remain standard texts: The Tasmanian Aborigines (1890), which was republished in 1899 in what Roth rejoiced as near 'absolute completeness' on the subject; The Natives of Sarawak and British North Borneo (1896); and Great Benin: Its Customs, Art and Horrors (1903)" (ADB).

Architekturschatz. Eine Sammlung von Aufnahmen, Mustergilt, Bauwerke, Architekturtheile, und Details von Meistern Baukunst aller Zeiten und Länder

Baumgärtner's Buckhandlung, Leipzig 1903 - Oversize folio of green cloth over front/back boards; dark green lettering on front board. Spine is not board-reinforced. Top, bottom, and fore edges protected by un-reinforced green cloth now only attached to back cover. Contains 304 loose sheets: Title page, 3 pages with list of plates, and the 300 bw plates (collated, all plates present). Heavy and will require extra postage (10 pounds/ 4.5 kilos). Series of photographs of German "architectural treasures" taken from 1897 to 1903 by architect Hermann Ruckwardt. Baumgartner's published this in 1897, 1902, and 1903. This is the 1903 edition which includes the "latest" photos by Ruckwardt.Table of contents lists the buildings and their architects. Some floor plans are also reproduced. A treasure trove of historic architectural interior and exterior patterns, gilt, buildings, parts, and details. Includes all sorts of villas, bridges, churches (including superb organs), synagogues, palaces, and other buildings throughout Germany and some in Budapest, Copenhagen, and Vienna. The list of plates includes the building/bridge/etc., its location, the particular view (front, bedroom, etc.) and the name of the architect and, in some cases, the year. The plates aslo include this information and the year of the actual photo. Because these photos are pre-World War (both), many of these places either no longer exist or were heavily restored. This is, therefore, a valuable reference for architectural historians, architectural sculptors, clergy, and anyone who simply appreciates beautiful photos of beautiful architecture. Scarce. Only 6 copies exist in Worldcat, and only 3 are this edition. A true find! Content Good to VG/Covers Poor but protective: Front cover tearing along spine. Pages are brittle; four preliminary pages and a few plates have chips to edges, but not enough to affect the images or text. Former owner's name (B. Besabotnoff, Berlin) on front cover in ink, but there is no information anywhere on the Internet about this name/person. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

"I can re-christen the bishop at any time" - Autograph Letter about Naming a Character

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. A very interesting autograph letter from the beloved American novelist and short story writer to the American astronomer Edward Singleton Holden. October 22, [no year.] Responding to a letter in which Holden apparently tried to help her with a question about the titles of Catholic bishops, Wharton writes: <br style="">"It is very kind of you to have remembered an enquiry made so long ago, & your information does not come too late - though, alas! it comes in the wrong language. The difficulty was to know how R. C. bishops were designated in English in the 18th century - or in the 19th, for that matter. If you come across a solution of this question please think of me again. My book is still in the making & I can re-christen the bishop at any time." On her Lenox, Mass. letterhead. 2 pp. of a bifolium. Central crease from mailing, else in fine condition. <br style="">The letter likely concerns Wharton's story "Expiation," which was originally published in Hearst's International-Cosmopolitan, in December of 1903, when Wharton had acquired a reputation as a writer but had not reached the large readership she was to gain two years later, with The House of Mirth. The story is about a young woman novelist who is awaiting with a mixture of anticipation and fear the press's reaction to the publication of her first novel, Fast and Loose (an ironic reference to the unpublished novella by the same name which Wharton wrote in 1876-1877, when she was fifteen). The novice, Paula Fetherel, a comfortably married and respectable New York society lady, has an uncle, the self-important Bishop of Ossining, whose literary works include "The Wail of Jonah" (twenty cantos in blank verse) and "Through a Glass Brightly," an edifying tale of a poor consumptive girl struggling to support her two idiot sisters. The bishop's works, we gather, do not sell well and Fetherel fears that her bishop uncle will be irrevocably offended by the light morals of her book.   Eventually the bishop is persuaded to denounce his niece's novel from the pulpit, whereupon it immediately becomes a best seller. <br style="">Although she did not publish her first novel until she was forty, Edith Wharton was an extremely prolific writer, publishing fifteen novels, seven novellas, and eighty-five short stories, as well as poetry, books on design, travel, literary and cultural criticism, and a memoir. She and her husband, Edward Wharton, were keen European travelers, often spending four months of the year away from the United States. A well-connected member of the upper class, Wharton was also a friend and confidante to many gifted intellectuals of her era, including Henry James, Sinclair Lewis, Jean Cocteau, and Teddy Roosevelt.<br style="">Edward Singleton Holden was an  American astronomer and the fifth president of the University of California. A prolific writer, he wrote mostly on scientific subjects, but also published several books and articles on history and current events.

Wikipedia über Jalaloddin: Jalal ad-Din Mingburnu (full name: Jalal ad-Dunya wa ad-Din Abul-Muzaffar Manguberdi ibn Muhammad) or Manguberdi (Turkic for "Godgiven"), also known as Jalâl ad-Din Khwarazmshâh, was the last ruler of the Khwarezmian Empire. Following the defeat of his father, Ala ad-Din Muhammad II by Genghis Khan in 1220, Jalal ad-Din Mengübirti came to power but he rejected the title shah that his father had assumed and called himself simply sultan. Jalal ad-Din retreated with the remaining Khwarazm forces, while pursued by a Mongol army and at the battle of Parwan, north of Kabul, defeated the Mongols. Due to the Mongol invasion, the sacking of Samarkand and being deserted by his Afghan allies, Jalal ad-Din was forced to flee to India. At the Indus River, however, the Mongols caught up with him and killed his forces along with thousands of refugees at the Battle of Indus. He escaped and sought asylum in the Sultanate of Delhi but Iltumish denied this to him in deference to the relationship with the Abbasid caliphs. Jalal ad-Din Mengübirti spent three years in exile in India before returning to Persia. He gathered an army and re-established a kingdom. He never consolidated his power however, and he spent the rest of his days struggling against the Mongols, pretenders to the throne and the Seljuk Turks of Rum. He lost his power over Persia in a battle against the Mongols in the Alborz mountains and fled to the Caucasus, to capture Azerbaijan in 1225, setting up their capital at Tabriz. In 1226 he attacked Georgia and sacked Tbilisi, destroying all the churches and massacring the city's Christian population. Jalal ad-Din had a brief victory over the Seljuks and captured the town Akhlat from Ayyubids. However, he was later defeated by Sultan Kayqubad I at Erzincan on the Upper Euphrates at the Battle of Yass&#305çemen (Yassi Chemen) in 1230, from where he escaped to Diyarbakir while the Mongols captured Azerbaijan in the ensuing confusion. He was murdered in 1231 in Diyarbakir by a Kurdish assassin hired by the Seljuks or possibly by Kurdish highwaymen.
