[Eragny Press] A Brief Account of the Origin of the Eragny Press and a Note.

Hammersmith: Eragny Press, 1903. First edition. Original color pictorial paper covered boards with superb design by Lucien Pissarro featuring repeating blossom and leaf pattern both covers, gilt lettering on cover. 235 copies, printed in the new "Brook" type on Arches handmade paper, with 15 exquisite woodcut illustrations by Lucien Pissarro, one of the more lavishly illustrated titles of the press, and a bibliography of the press thus far to date. This was the first use of the new font designed by Lucien Pissarro and cut by E. P. Prince. Daniel Berkley Updike described the Brook type as "an agreeable roman letter designed... on the lines of the Vale type, with a pleasant movement and admirable legibility." It was used for the remaining publications of the Press. A near fine copy.

The Riddle Of The Sands ( First UK Edition)

The First UK printing published by London, Smith Elders & 1903.The BOOK is in VERY GOOD+ condition. 336pp. + 4pp ads. Publisher's decorated black cloth with titles in white to the spine though quite rubbed as is lamentably often the case.Light bumping to extremities, rubbing to spine not affecting the integrity of the book.Decorated boards sharp, a little bit of inoffensive wear here and there.Internally free from inscriptions and erasures. There is the expected occasional light spotting.Illustrated with fold out maps and charts which are all present.Frontispiece folding chart a trifle creased with some light soiling to the title page.Housed in a custom slander box.A very good copy of the first edition of a book somewhat contentiously described as the first modern espionage novel, vying for the title with Kipling's Kim, published two years earlier. Originally written after he returned injured from action in South Africa and first published in 1903 the novel of imminent conflict with Germany was highly influential and is actually credited with the founding of British naval bases at Invergordon and Scapa Flow; newly regarded as strategically important after examination of the scenarios in Childer's novel. Childers was of course a staunch advocate of Irish Home Rule and was found guilty of possessing a firearm in contravention of the Irish Emergency Powers Resolution and sentenced to death by firing squad in 1922.The book was adapted in 1979 into a movie starring Michael York and Simon MacCorkindale. An exceptionally scarce and important title to find in any condition.Highly collectible with such attributes.

The Diaries of Rev. W. E. Preston Haas of Media, PA and Bertha Haas: 81 volumes (Containg the years 1903 - 1965)

Handwritten diaries, 1903-1964. Hardcover. Very Good. 87 volumes. An incredible collection of the life of Rev. W.E. Preston Haas (11 April 1903 - April 1965) and his mother Bertha Haas. Small standard diaries. Contains the years 1903, 1908-1964. Multiple volumes for a number of years. Haas was the pastor at Lima United Methodist Church. He lived off Middletown Rd in Delaware Co. (Near Media) Pennsylvania with his family. Haas also worked in Methodist ministry in Philadelphia and Bristol. The diaries have hand written entries of the each dayâ??s work for 57 years. Haas's hand writing is in very legible, clean ink. Most of the entries deal with the service he gave to his community and his day to day life. The names of local families he worked with at births, weddings, funerals, christenings, convocations, communions, remembrances of those lost in the two world wars give a vision of this man's life. His charitable work with the Old Fellow's (IOOF, he served as Grand Master in 1946) was also an important part of his life. The names, addresses, phone numbers, birthdays, and deaths of the members of his congregation are recorded. Most the entries are mundane, but a number of entries in the 1950s deal with the Soviet Union. Some diaries have color maps of the world. It is interesting to see how borders changed during Haas's lifetime. Additionally, the collection includes a earlier diaries and legers by Bertha E. Haas (Preston's mother who lived in Burlington NJ, b. 1880?) (in 1908 Preston received a telescope for his Birthday). SN 197-30-7860. A wealth of genealogical and local Methodist history. Tall 12mo, soft leather coves, 975 copies, Gelder paper, with a program for A Keltic Evening of Irish folklore and song held on May 11, 1906 in Manhattan laid-in.       1903. Small 4to, 8vo, and oblong 8vo. Altogether 4½ pp. To John Henderson, Secretary of the National Liberal Club, on invitations and publications: "[...] Jacob has transmitted your request for a speech. Frankly I had much rather not speak. If I did that sort of thing at all well I would be very glad to do it, but I am - at this sort of thing - heavy, self-conscious, dull & disinteresting. No one would be the happier for my suffering and it would convert an occasion to which I look forward with the most festive anticipation, into a task and a terror [...]" (20 March 1903). - About the treatment of the political activist Clarence Henry Norman (1886-1974): "[...] why is Norman leaving the club? Is he being expelled for any reason? Or has he simply resigned his membership? [...]" - "[...] Mr C. H. Norman writes to complain that his membership of the N.L.C. has been 'cancelled' on account of his anti-war letters. I am half-shocked at this. He impresses me as being quite insane upon the war question but quite honest & I fail to see the justification for this expulsion of an esteemed most desirable member [...]" (undated, but c. 1914). - "Dear Mr Henderson, Yes I'm sorry. But do you know I didn't enter the N.L.C. from one year's end to another. I have had to go through my list of annual subscriptions & cut them down. And there it is! [...]" (13 April 1932).

A handsomely printed edition of Varavenargues's maxims in parallel french and english text. Luc de Clapiers, marquis de Vauvenargues was a minor French writer and moralist. He died at age 31, in broken health, having published the year priorâ€"anonymouslyâ€"a collection of essays and aphorisms with the encouragement of Voltaire, his friend. He first received public notice under his own name in 1797, and from 1857 on, his aphorisms became popular. The cloth spine of vol. 1 largely defective and the stitching practically loose, vol. 2 and vol. 5 spines also worn, boards and labels rubbed. Nisbet in the first four; the last volume without inscriptions but with a Blackwell's bookseller's label and occasional pencil marks in the text. The first edition of A.E. Housman's magisterial edition of Manilius, printed in small numbers over 27 at Housman's own expense; the first volume only sold out its run of four hundred copies by the time the last appeared because, Housman recalled, 'it found purchasers among the unlearned, who had heard that it contained a scurrilous preface and hoped to extract from it a low enjoyment' An abridgement in one volume followed in 1932 and a second edition in 1937. This copy has signs of ownership from two notable Latinists: Robert George Nisbet (1872-1955) was lecturer in the Humanities at Glasgow; his son Robin George Murdoch Nisbet (1925-2013) also studied at Glasgow before taking a second BA at Balliol College as a Snell Exhibitioner, going on to become Corpus Professor of Latin at Oxford.         Important Collection of Letters and Telegrams to the Composer

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. A fascinating collection of 14 autograph letters and cards and 2 telegrams addressed to the important French composer, dated between 1903 and 1917, from musicians and other artistic figures of the era. The letters, from correspondents including conductors, critics, dancers, composers, and visual artists, mention the very positive reception of Debussy's works during the last years of his life, including his 1903 nomination as a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur, the Chicago premiere of his opera Pelléas et Melisande, and Toscanini's 1911 performance of La Mer; other works discussed include his ballet Jeux, the cantata L'enfant prodigue, and his work for piano, L'isle joyeuse. Letters range from 4 x 2.5 inches to 5.25 x 8.25 inches and are overall in very good to fine condition, with some light toning and age wear. All letters in French.Contents:Three letters congratulate Debussy on his nomination to the Légion d'honneur in 1903: one autograph note on the visiting card of conductor Edouard Colonne (Paris, [February 1903], 1 p.); one ALS  from the soprano Lucienne Bréval (n.p., [February 4, 1903], 4 pp.) which also mentions her desire to sing one of Debussy's mélodies with orchestra; and one ALS from the architect Charles Plumet (Paris, n.d., 1 p.).Two telegrams dated June 11, 1910 send congratulations to Debussy on the successful performance of his Pelléas et Mélisande in Chicago from the conductor, Cleofonte Campanini, and the director general of the Chicago Grand Opera Company, Andreas Dippel: "Four thousand people were impressed and touched. Our congratulations."Two letters send congratulations to Debussy on the performance of his La Mer under Toscanini in Turin in 1911. On a photograph postcard (Turin, September 30, 1911), the composer Leone Sinigaglia writes that "It would have been a joy for you, a lasting memory. Toscanini put his whole soul into it, all his intelligence, and all his will. His execution of your admirable masterpiece was prodigious. The public, wary at the beginning (as you may imagine! you know this well), was won over -- at the end it was a great success, which was repeated yesterday evening..." The critic Giuseppe Depanis (Turin, October 12, 1911, 2 pp.) writes that "not only was the second presentation (Toscanini) of La Mer received with the same good favor as the first, but Vincent D'Indy also performed Nuages andFêtes in his concert on the 10th of the month with great success."An autograph letter from Nadejda Rimsky-Korsakov (St Petersburg, August 20, 1911, 1 p., with envelope) thanks Debussy for his telegram, and mentions in reference to the Ballets Russes' adaptation of her husband's famous work Scheherazade that "the appearance before the artistic Parisian public of my husband's works, changed and transformed into ballet, caused me great pain last summer and this time."  An autograph letter from the caricaturist Beppe Fabiano (Paris, May 29, 1912, 2 pp.) confesses to Debussy that "I have just exhibited your portrait at the Salon des Humanistes -- in a series of celebrated composers -- without asking your permission beforehand. Fearing I may have overstepped, I would be delighted if you would forgive me."<br style="">A short autograph letter from the sculptor Denys Puech (Paris, June 4, 1912, 1 p.) mentions L'après-midi d'un faune. A short autograph letter from the sculptor [Albert] Bartholomé (Budapest, May 25, 1913, 1 p.) informs Debussy that his cantata L'enfant prodigue "was admirably executed by truly passionate performers. I was able to obtain the poster from the theater and will be pleased to send it to you." The Russian ballerina and soloist with the Ballets Russes, Ludmilla Chollar writes to Debussy about her role in Jeux, in which she starred with Nijinsky and Tamara Karsavina (London, June 26, [1913], 2 pp.). She thanks the composer for the "the most beautiful memories which I could bring from Paris: the very kind words with which you dedicated Jeux, your photography, and some measures of my role [...] If I take from the creation of Jeux one exquisite and ineffable memory, it is to you that I owe it, to your work, and to the happy chance that I met you, away from the mirage of celebrities, an artist as great as you, whose work is dear to me above all others."<br style="">An autograph letter from the composer Ildebrando Pizzetti (Florence, September 17, 1913, 1 p., with envelope) asks Debussy to comment on his new composition: "You would do me a great honor, Maître, if you would send me a few words on the subject, but of course with no obligation on your part to give me compliments if my musical work does not interest you!"An interesting wartime letter from the Italian conductor Bernardino Molinari (Rome, September 18, 1915, 4 pp.) calls on Debussy's patriotic feelings to ask him to collaborate with his orchestra: "I still remember what you said to me yourself here in Rome, about "L'isle joyeuse," when you gave me hope that you might make a transcription for orchestra. If you have the desire and the time, I would be very flattered to have the score, to perform it during the next concert season at the Augusteo. You understand that in this season we very much wish to form a program in which our allies in France figure prominently. In a political moment like this one, where the souls of all the Allied nations are unified, and united into one ideal, all of us at the Academie ask you for your valid support in the coming season." He goes on to apologize that because of the war, he will be unable to offer the same fee as the previous time, and reports that performances of Debussy's works around Italy have been very successful: "This shows, with evidence, that your musical language speaks to great and small, touching the heartstrings of all." An autograph letter from the composer and musicologist Jean D'Udine (Paris, April 27, 1917, 3 pp.) invites Debussy to one of Udine's salons, despite Debussy's known disdain for his school of dance: "I know you have no sympathy for rhythmic gymnastics, which seem to you, you have written, 'a very disagreeable domestication of rhythm.' I believe that you are wrong, and that they are rather an emancipation of rhythm, when taught well. Without any hostility on your part towards the method which I teach with conviction, I would like to ask you to honor with your presence one of the evenings which I am hosting at present. You would there see danced, with extreme love and respect by one of my students, a remarkable artist, your beautiful dances for chromatic harp [...] I did not want to give these evenings (April 28, and May 3 and 5) without informing you, pour memoire, and without letting you know that it is sometimes where one feels the least loved that one is actually the most seriously and profoundly loved..."The violinist and composer Francesco Guarnieri writes (N.p., October 17, 1917, 2 pp., on black-bordered stationery) to ask Debussy for a signed copy of his violin sonata, which he will perform in Italy, and also recalls a much earlier performance of Debussy's famous quartet, at which Debussy gave him a copy of the score.

A TRULY EXQUISITE BOOK IN THE LOVELY WHITE CLOTH AND GILT BINDING, PROFUSELY ILLUSTRATED WITH COLOUR PAINTINGS AND TINTED DRAWINGS. RARELY SEEN IN THIS CONDITION. A comprehensive history of Venice from its earliest settlers, through its complex political, social, and religious development. The author includes a history of economics and commerce, fine arts, and the social classes. He draws from the old histories of antiquity as well as modern sources. He references Ruskin, Berenson, Bode, Burckhardt, and Saccardo. The last half of the book is strictly a guide book, tracing nooks and crannies of the city from a complete chapter on the Basilica of St. Mark, to the Ducal Palace, the Accademia, and Grand Canal. Colour paintings are interspersed throughout, including some wonderful portraits of local people (bead-threaders in bright dress, Venetian women, Gondoliers), local interest scenes (a wine-shop, a gondola under the Ponte di Rialto, a modern sunset on the Canal, and a curiosity shop on the water-front), and some marvelous views of cathedral interiors and architecture along the water. “The History of Venice is the history of a State unparalleled in Europe for permanence and stability. For centuries Venice occupied that position of maritime supremacy now held by Great Britain, and time was when an English king was fain to crave the loan of a few warships to vindicate his rights in France. The autonomy of the Venetian Republic so imposed on men’s minds that it was regarded as in the very nature of things, and even so acute an observer as Voltaire wrote in the Dictionnaire Philosophique, less than three decades before her fall: “Venice has preserved her independence during eleven centuries, and I flatter myself will preserve it for ever.” “The word Venetia,” says Francesco Sansovino, ‘is interpreted by some to mean VENI ETIAM, which is to say, ‘Come again and again’; for how many times soever thou shalt come, new things and new beauties thou shalt see.”

"Andy Adams wrote six other books, all fiction, and this book is considered fiction by most people, but Adams told Philip A. Rollins that 'its only fictional elements are the names of the characters and the ascribing to a single drive occurrences which actually were divided among several.' It has become a classic as a picture of trail driving, and no bibliography on cattle would be complete without it." Adams, Rampaging Herd, 8.

        Diaries 1903-1919 and 1928-1930.

Two cloth bound notebooks; small folio. Original manuscript diaries. First volume, June 1903 to October 5th 1919, 197 pages, c50 photographs and a few pieces of ephemera. Second volume, 30th December 1928 to April 1930, 357 pages and several photographs. Diary one begins with the story of his apprenticeship abroad the four masted ship the Galina, transporting from coal from Barry Dock. He joined with two other young men from the Isle of Wight and within two weeks he relates how one of them was killed falling from the rigging and his body never being found. His first voyage was to Callao, Peru and then onto Newcastle, New South Wales. Full of details such how a new cook taken on in Newcastle "doped the crew with Epsom salts and then disappeared during the night." In November 1906 Galina is shipwrecked on the Columbia River, Oregon by this time Beadle had served 3 1/2 of his 4 year apprenticeship but rather than joining a new ship he and a ship mate hiked away through the bush, watching as their new boat sailed out of the sound. "We had six jolly hard long hungry wet cold weeks, shifting our place of concealment every once in awhile..." A reward was offered for information on their whereabouts. Helped by a local family, they began working on their dairy farm. In October 1909 he went back to sea joining a Glasgow tramp in Portland. There then follows a detailed day by day account of life abroad the "Earl of Douglas. "Thursday 16th December 1909. Fine day. arrived at St Vincent 8am this morning. Billy M & I swapped most of our clothes for 150 oranges 51/2 dozen eggs, two big bunches of bananas & four little flax seed purses & 15/- English money. Took 800 tons of coal, sailed at 4.50pm. St Vincent looks a terrible barren place. we are bound for Belfast." Wed 29th arrived Belfast and saw Olympic & Titanic under construction. In early 1910 he returned to Portland and farm work and fell in love with owners daughter, but left in October - "I had sense enough to see that things were altogether out of proportion, Marjorie being 15 & I 22." In 1911 he bought a small piece of land and had a shack built on it taking any job he could on land and at sea. A detailed description of small town America - "June 1913 About this time all the people who lived in that district clubbed together & built a dance Hall $2000. Marshall & I each gave $20 & lent them a hand with building it." He also started cranberry farming. In September 1914 he arranged for passage home on the Olympic. September 12th " I took Marjorie home when the dance was over as usual, which generally took a considerable time for various reasons, this night for some reason it took longer than usual." He left America without saying good bye to Marjorie. On his return home he wrote to the War Office suggesting that he would be very useful in the Flying Corps unsurprisingly they suggested the navy - he ended up in the army. His brothers gained commissions but Jack didn't think he was officer material. He joined the Gloucestershire Regiment on 16th June 1915 was sent as part of 7th Battalion to Gallipoli. On his arrival at Gallipoli he starts to keep a daily record making notes in his check book and writing them up later. Very detailed description of the conditions, the work routines, dysentery, rations, importance of mail and parcels, the need to gather fire wood (to leave the trenches to do so was a punishable offence), lice, digging and more digging. He volunteered as a sniper but in a note added later he states he removed this entry from his check book as he thought if the Turks captured him knowing he was a sniper - they would "finish him off". Details his experiences as a sniper and the death of his sniper sergeant. "October 19th 1915. Damn Cold. We used to get out of the trenches & search a bit of ground that had been cultivated & managed to find enough of these peas cooking pods & all to fill a mess tin. This was a considerable risk attached to the job as they were a good many stray bullets & occasional shell. But a man will do anything if he is thirsty and hungry enough". 28th October "2nd Lieut Haslock shrapnel in his head. Old Harris rifle bullet through shoulder. Managed to buy some H&P biscuits." "On 26th November we had a terrible rain fall after dark, filled trenches up to the tops. Our Battalion which was 500 strong, two days later was 65. We snipers drew no rations for 5 days. But got food out of swamped dugouts & trenches. People who have not seen can not imagine. After rain of two hours heavy frost followed, men died & were drowned in the trenches." Jack left Cape Hellas on the 9th January 1916 as part of the Glosters rear guard. By 9th February 1916 he was guarding a length of the Suez Canal and by 16th he was on a ship bound for the Persian Gulf. Jack and the 7th Battalion took part in the costly and doomed effort to relieve the city of Kut, where Major-General Townshend's Division was encircled by a Turkish besieging army. In one attack his commanding officer Major Younghusband was cut off and Jack was the only person to get to him in daylight carrying messages and a bag of biscuits, however Younghusband was dead when he got to him. "I don't think I was a bit sorry although he was a very reckless & brave man." He was in Iraq until the end of the war apart from a brief home leave. 11th November 1918, "Same old job, same weather." Only on the 12th did he get news that Germany had "chucked it in". Rumour spread among his battalion that they were going to sent to Russia to fight the Bolshevicks. Fascinating account of the demobilisation process. The second volume is an account of his life as a bargee - skipper & owner of the Lord Kitchener, sailing out of Southampton. He details some of the time elapsed since the end of the first diary including the suicide of his father and his ambition to be a writer. A superb diary of a young merchant seaman, of small town and rural America at the turn of the century and of soldier in the doomed Gallipoli Campaign.

The Complete Works of John Ruskin in 39 volumes. The Library Edition. Edited by E.T. Cook and Alexander Wedderburn George Allen and Unwin, 1903 - 1912. The Library Edition of the complete works of John Ruskin completed in 39 volumes over a period of nine years. Comprising the totality of his known works with many letters and previously unpublished material up to that date and forms a tremendous record of the achievement of one of Britain's foremost art critics who was also an accomplished artist in his own right as well as being an important patron, philanthropist and social thinker. Arguably his most important achievements in his lifetime were the championing of the pre-Raphaelites and his important defence of J.M.W. Turner which brought him to prominence early in his life. The edition was the outcome of twelve years work by Edward Tyas Cook and Alexander Wedderburn, although Cook completed the bulk of the editing. The aim of The Library Edition was to provide the complete works of Ruskin both literary and artistic, in uniform volumes. The edition was undertaken by Messrs. George Allen, Ruskin's publishers. Illustrated by 820 wood blocks and 990 full-page plates with 120 facsimiles of MSS., the edition includes 269 plates of Ruskin's own drawings of which 200 had never before been published. Portraits of Ruskin are used as frontispieces to some of the volumes. The press work was carried out by Messrs. Ballantyne of Edinburgh, and the weight of type amounted to nine tons, whilst the printing ink weighed 1800lbs. Printed on hand-made, linen rag paper (about 87tons) with a double watermark of Ruskin's monogram and seal. The edition consisted of 2062 sets, of which 2000 were available for sale to subscribers for the full set. The first volume was published on 27 March 1903. George Allen did not live to see the completion of the edition dying on 5 September 1907, his children taking over the firm. A Fine set in publisher's deluxe full stamped morocco binding, unused and completely unopened. This binding is unrecorded in James Dearden's Monograph on the Library Edition and as far as I can trace has only appeared twice at auction in the last 50 years; once in the early 1970's and again in 2003.
