Ralph Waldo Emerson (May 25, 1803 ¿ April 27, 1882), known professionally as Waldo Emerson, was an American essayist, lecturer, and poet who led the transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century. He was seen as a champion of individualism and a prescient critic of the countervailing pressures of society, and he disseminated his thoughts through dozens of published essays and more than 1,500 public lectures across the United States. Emerson wrote on a number of subjects, never espousing fixed philosophical tenets, but developing certain ideas such as individuality, freedom, the ability for humankind to realize almost anything, and the relationship between the soul and the surrounding world. Emerson's "nature" was more philosophical than naturalistic: "Philosophically considered, the universe is composed of Nature and the Soul". Emerson is one of several figures who "took a more pantheist approach by rejecting views of God as separate from the world." He remains among the pillars of the American romantic movement, and his work has greatly influenced the thinkers, writers and poets that followed him. When asked to sum up his work, he said his central doctrine was "the infinitude of the private man." Emerson is also well known as a mentor and friend of Henry David Thoreau, a fellow transcendentalist. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

CAMERA NOTES:; OFFICIAL ORGAN OF THE CAMERA CLUB OF NEW YORK

Camera Club of New York, NY 1903 - 4tos., various paginations, with tipped-in photogravures and halftones, other illustrations in text. 18 Issues as follows: Volume II, No.1-4, bound by the Camera Club in green cloth with gilt emblem, with the original wrappers bound in; Vol. III, No.1-4; Vol. IV, No. 1-2, 4; Vol. V, No. 1-4; Vol. VI, No. 1-3. The individual issues are in the original printed wrappers with several of the blank spines either repaired or replaced. Vol. VI, No. 2 shows dampstaining on the blank margins and is lacking the printed label which was affixed to the front wrapper. Stieglitz's goal was to publish a magazine that would set a new standard of excellence in pictorial photography, which would in turn attract the finest photographers to The Camera Club's yearly salon. Stieglitz proposed selling advertisement space to fund a substantial beautifully illustrated periodical that would include photogravures representing some important achievements in pictorial photography, chosen not only from the club and America, but from the best material the world at large could offer. This policy soon had CAMERA NOTES regarded as one of the most significant and influential photographic journals of its time. However, there was a backlash from the club's membership, whose concern was that the journal was becoming an elitist publication whose contributors were mostly from outside the club itself. Under this mounting criticism, Stieglitz published his resignation from the editorship. CAMERA NOTES ceased publication in December 1903. It ran just three issues after Stieglitz resigned. The photogravures include:Ebony and Ivory by F. Day; Study in Red by Robert Demachy; A Wet Night, Columbus Circle, New York by W.A. Fraser; Mending Nets by Alfred Stieglitz; Magdalen by Charles I. Berg; Portrait Study by Gertrude Käsebier; Portrait of F. Holland Day by Gertrude Käsebier; Spring by Clarence H. White; Scurrying Home by Alfred Stieglitz; A Street in Mentone by Robert Demachy; Beatrice by Mathilde Weil; Odalisque by Charles I. Berg; La Cigale by Emma J. White; The Manger by Gertrude Käsebier; Blessed art Thou Among Women by Gertrude Käsebier; The Dance by Rudolf Eickemeyer, Jr.; Telegraph Poles by Clarence H. White; At the Edge of the Woods-Evening by Clarence H.       Hi, Here we have a rare 1903 Original Hardback Wisden. In Very Good Condition. The 8th Wisden Hardback. A hard year to find. The lettering (gilt) is bright to the front board, the front board is also very clean as is the rear board. The spine cloth has had some mile restoration as has the spine gilt. Internally very nice but the hinges have been repaired (they always are on a 1903 as Wisden forgot to put the strengtheners in), nice photoplate too.

The Souls of Black Folk: Essays and Sketches

A.C. McClurg & Co, Chicago, IL 1903 - Often considered W.E.B. DuBois¿ most famous work, in this collection of essays he sets out to show to the reader ¿the strange meaning of being black here in the dawning of the Twentieth Century,¿ Du Bois explains the meaning of the emancipation, and its effect, and his views on the role of the leaders of his race. The nicest copy of this first edition we've ever seen! Black boards feature brilliant gilt on front cover and spine, and head of text block. Blind tooling on front cover is distinct and clear. Minimal rubbing at corners and spine ends, and faint signs of shelf wear along perims. Binding is solid. Spine is barely sunned. Back board exhibits very faint signs of wear or fading, only clearly seen in certain lighting. Inside pages are free of marginalia and intentional marks. Pages are lightly age-toned. Interior exhibits very few signs of age or wear, with very rare and few scattered marks of foxing or other blemish to the pages. Text block edges on fore and foot edge are the expected perforated, barely-deckled signs of neat and clean initial page cuts. Book may exhibit additional minor signs of age or wear. William Edward Burghardt Du Bois (1868-1963) was an American sociologist, historian, civil rights activist, Pan-Africanist, author, and editor. This book was written when he was the director of special research for the NAACP. From the book. "Herein lie buried many things which if read with patience may show the strange meaning of being black here in the dawning of the Twentieth Century. This meaning is not without interest to you, Gentle Reader; for the problem of the Twentieth Century is the problem of the color-line." 264 pages. 5.5 x 8.5 inches. Postage for oversized and international shipping will be calculated by size and weight. AbeBooks shipping quotes are ESTIMATES only. If actual shipping cost is less than the AbeBooks estimate, it is our practice to REFUND the difference to the buyer. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin

London: Frederick Warne & Co.,, 1903. Sextodecimo. Original grey boards, titles to front cover and spine in white, pictorial label with illustration to front cover, pictorial endpapers. Frontispiece and 26 illustrations in colour by the author. Spine and board edges a little faded; an excellent copy. First edition, first impression, with the title page dated 1903 and without the words "Author of the Tale of Peter Rabbit". The first edition was published in August 1903. The story originated in 1897 with a picture letter to Noel Moore, and was rewritten in 1901 for Norah Moore. It is the first book to feature the introduction of pictorial endpapers, against Potter's initial inclination, though she conceded that it might work: "I always think that an endpaper ought to be something to rest the eye between the cover and the contents of the book; like a plain mount for a framed drawing. At that same time (having let off my objections) ? I dare say it will come out all right.

        The Light in Dends Wood

Greening and Co. 18 and 20 Cecil Court: London, 1903. 8vo. 116pp. + 8pp. ads. Publisher's green cloth titled and decorated in black and white with a moonlit forest scene. Minor edgewear, light bumping to spine ends, teetering on the edge of near fine but certainly a very good copy indeed of what must be a rather fragile book. Internally clean. A rather florid "With Compliments" has been written across the front flyleaf suggesting that either this is a publisher's presentation or that Mr. Dagless himself gave it to someone. Samples of Mr. Dagless's handwriting however remain elusive, in fact the only thing I can find referencing him at all is a mention to the effect that none other than Anthony Hope recommended him for entry into a list of "The Fifty Worst Books." A very scarce mystery novel. .
