Febbraio 1903.

1903. Lettera autografa manoscritta, in formato cm.17,7x11,3, compilata su quattro facciate. Puccini si rivolge all'amico Riccioni, avvocato viareggino, in tono scherzoso: "Caro Sindaco di Riccione, è un pezzo che non ti do mie nuove né ne ricevo da te. [...] Codice libreria 129133.

Moderní vyucování kreslení na obecných a mestanských skolách. Pruvodce k umelecké výchove mládeze [Modern drawing lessons for primary and secondary schools. A guide for arts education for the youth].

Prague: Fr. Rivnac (printed in Vienna by Rudolf von Waldheim), [1903–1906]. - Four original string-tied cloth portfolios, measuring 36 × 24 cm, with decorative titles to to front board; each with an introductory brochure and [8], XXV (vol. I); XX (vol. II); XX, 1–33 (vol. III), 34–60 (vol. IV) leaves of color lithographs on card stock. Light wear to corners of portfolios; owner inscription to folding flaps; else a very good set. Complete set of four striking portfolios of patterns and designs, constituting an elaborate art education course for younger students. The accompanying text explains how to use the patterns, laying out a comprehensive process by which students graduate from simpler two-dimensional shapes to colors and to complex compositions such as landscapes and tableaus. Andel, who published numerous pedagogical texts and design portfolios in Vienna from the 1870s through the early 1900s, was notably inspired by Vienna Secession, especially those of its members which stressed abstract and geometric forms. The introduction of the fourth volume is largely based on Adolf Hölzel’s influential essay “Über Formen und Massenvertheilung,” published in Ver Sacrum. Little information exists about the author, a school teacher from Prague, but a recent essay by Alexander Klee (“Formkunst – Phänomen eines Kulturraums“) situates his work in the context of other Austro-Hungarian artistic developments (in Kubismus. Konstruktivismus. Formkunst, 2016). KVK, OCLC show no copies outside the Czech Republic. (Incomplete sets of the German edition, entitled Der moderne Zeichenunterricht an Volks- und Bürgerschulen. Ein Führer auf dem Wege zur künstlerischen Erziehung der Jugend, are held in Bremen, Zurich and Slovenia). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

- Joseph Wilpert (1857-1944 in Rom). Priester. ADVENTURES OF GERARD (Fine, Square Copy of the First Edition)

London: Newnes, 1903. Doyle, A(rthur) Conan. ADVENTURES OF GERARD. London: Newnes, [1903]. Illustrations by W. B. Wollen. FIRST EDITION. A Fine, square copy with only the most minimal wear, really as nice as it gets. In original publisher's cloth decorated in gilt. Small blind-stamp of W. H. Smith & Son, London on front free endpaper. Doyle had bigger and better heroes, of course, but none so comical and hilariously portrayed as is vain, egotistical Etienne Gerard, a French brigadier serving during the Napoleonic Wars. He thinks he's the best soldier and lover that ever lived and all his deeds are efforts to prove it. As with the Sherlock Holmes stories, Brigadier Gerard first appeared in the Strand Magazine in stories published between 1900-1903. THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES was produced just one year before in a similar size and format. Surprisingly scarce in collector's condition and a worthy addition to a Conan Doyle collection.. First Edition. Decorative Cloth. Fine. Illus. by W. B. Wollen.

ORIGINAL SKETCH BOOK OF EDWIN AUSTIN ABBEY

No Publisher, no date - This is a collection of over 100 small original sketches extracted from different sources and pasted into about 1/3rd of this soft cover notebook likely sometime after the turn of the last century. The sketches are in charcoal, pen and ink, graphite and depict both men and women contemporary to Abbey as well as in earlier costume. I believe this is to be mostly early work from the famous artist likely for work large format poetry and music books such as "Old Songs", "The Quiet Life" and "Herricks Poems" among others. Abbey was a great friend of artist John Singer Sargent. They shared studio space together and collaborated on large mural projects. I BELEIVE ONE OF THE SKETCHES TO BE THAT OF JOHN SINGER SARGENT SITTING AT A CAFE TABLE WITH A BOTTLE OF WINE, SEE PHOTOS. Only one sketch in the collection carries the hand signed initials of "E. A. Abbey 1903" but a thorough viewing suggests all the work is his. Possibly done by the family at one time in order to share the works equally, or an early attempt to "save" works that were about to be discarded. The notebook paper has become brittle and is chipping at edges, as has the book itself with the spine gone. Pages could use a cleaning as over time some medium except the inks is shedding. Truly a one of a kind work. Glad to send more photos if needed. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

The Principal Navigations [together with] Purchas His Pilgrimes.

Glasgow: James MacLehose and Sons, 1903–07 - 32 volumes, octavo (218 × 140 mm). Mid 20th-century brown half morocco, spine compartments in black and gilt, brown cloth sides, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Spines a little faded, occasional light spotting to edges and contents. An excellent set. Frontispieces, maps, and plates throughout. A handsomely bound set of voyages and travels. Hakluyt took such patriotic pride in his countrymen's exploits in the fields of travel and adventure that he devoted his life to preserving the records of all English voyages. His Voyages was the greatest assemblage of travel accounts and navigations to all parts of the world collected up to its time, and a primary source for early New World exploration. At Hakluyt's death his manuscripts fell into the hands of Purchas, who added to them many more voyages and travels. He followed the general plan of Hakluyt, but frequently put the accounts into his own words. A very attractive set divided into 12 volumes of Haklyut and 20 of Purchas.

AN ANGLER'S AUTOBIOGRAPHY. By Frederic M. Halford. With an introduction by William Senior.

Vinton & Co., Limited. London. - 1903 1st edition. 8vo (150 x 222mm). Ppxxiv,286. Photogravure plates and other b/w photographs. Dark blue cloth, upper board and spine titled in gilt. Re-cased in original cloth, new end-papers. Top and bottom of spine slightly frayed but internally clean and bright. A good-plus copy. ".a fascinating celebration of a lifelong obsession with trout, trout streams and trout-stream insects. An Angler's Autobiography is just that, the story of Halford's love of fishing, from age 6 to 60. The eminent dry-fly practitioner is happy to tell us about his early days paternostering for pike, ledgering for barbel and tightcorking fat lobworms for perch and chub - dastardly Nottingham tactics for coarse fish. He even recalls experimenting with fly-fishing on salt water in the 1860s. But after being smitten by the sight of trout rising to 'upright-winged floating duns,' Halford's passion turns to chalk-stream fishing. Beyond paying tribute to his friendship with Marryat, Halford barely mentions his own theories and accomplishments. Like all good fishing writers, he knows the joy of a fishing life is in the quirky details - his love of cane over greenheart, memories of a black Lab that retrieved hung trout flies, the pleasure of testing new water and of being bested by tough fish. Best of all, Halford's autobiography gives us, in words and photographs, wonderful detail about fishing the Test and the Itchen in their Victorian heyday." (Christopher Camuto, Gray's Sporting Journal, Feb/March 1999). Chapters include:- Early recollections; Coarse fishing; Sea fishing; Thames trouting; The Wandle; Salmon fishing; Fishing the sunk fly; Houghton; The Test and Floating Flies; Dry-fly fishing; The Itchen; The end of our Houghton Club; The Kennet and Making a Fishery; Weimar; The Upper Test and Dry-Fly Entomology; Winchester and district.         Les portraits dessinés de J.-A.-D. Ingres

Chez J.-E. Bulloz 1903 - - Chez J.-E. [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Very rare first edition printed in hundred copies. Together hundred lithographs executed in pencil depicting politicians and intellectuals of the nineteenth century. The majority of boards are dated and signed. These reproductions have mostly been executed after works owned by private collectors. Recognized specialist Ingres, Lapauze Henry (1867-1925) notes in this respect in the introduction, "So those wonderful portraits, most of which are jealously guarded as family monuments, or are the pride of private collections, become a national treasure for all to contemplate." The main objective is to enable Lapauze works by Ingres to be better known to the general public at a time when the culture is raised to the status of national heritage by the Third Republic. It is in this sense that the work of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867) is reinvested in the early twentieth century: the hundred portraits provide a visual gallery of the entourage of Dominique Ingres; after portrait personalities that are known or not readers Lapauze considers this matter to the extent of the painter's genius enough to "the master of glory" and "enjoyment of people of taste." Ingres is erected and engineering of French painting of the nineteenth century. Rare copy of first edition compiling drawn portraits of Ingres. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
