The Mr. O'Connor is likely to be T. P. O'Connor, 1848-1929. MP for Liverpool. Mt. O'Connor founded the Sun, the Star and the Weekly Sun. He was the First presedent of the Board of Film Censors in 1917. Further gift inscription from Rev. Baud to Peter of Aberdeen, 1950. A few ink notes to margins. Front hinge to volume one repaired. Damage, in the form of a repaired crack, to the rear cover of volume one. Light foxing in places.

Contents a little shaken, hinges cracked, cloth marked, spine sunned. Very good. First Edition, First Impression. With the author's signed presentation inscription to the half title page, "to Sidney & Beatrice Webb from G. Bernard Shaw. Strachur Aug. 1903". An association of great significance. The Webbs were together with Shaw the leading lights of the Fabian Society. They had met in the 1870s and remained friends and political allies for more than half a century. Man and Superman is one of Shaw's most politically motivated plays, a Shavian critique of the philosophy of Nietzsche. Signed by Beatrice Webb on the front free endpaper.

Portrait frontispiece and a single double-sided plate. Text in German and English. Wrappers toned and rubbed, some wear at ends of spine, lower corner of wrappers and early leaves of contents a little creased and dulled. A very good copy of this fragile production. Rare first edition of Duncan's 1903 Berlin address that became the manifesto of modern dance, and was a volley of modernist feminism fired across the bow of the traditional art world. Coupling Nietzchean philosophy with Greek classicism, Duncan theorised a completely new form of dance that originated in the body itself – the solar plexus – and was free and natural like the dance of the ancient Greeks. She decried the staidness of ballet as "deforming the beautiful woman's body" and argued that, "The dancer of the future will be one whose body and soul have grown so harmoniously together that the natural language of that soul will have become the movement of the body… She will dance not in the form of a nymph, nor fairy, nor coquette but in the form of a woman in its greatest and purest expression. She will realise the mission of woman's body and the holiness of all its parts. She will dance the changing life of nature, showing how each part is transformed into the other. From all parts of her body shall shine radiant intelligence, bringing to the world the message of the thoughts and aspirations of thousands of women. She shall dance the freedom of women…". Though OCLC records about 35 copies in institutional holdings, this book is rare on the market and we can locate no records of it appearing at auction.

It provides a combination of personal revelation and eyewitness accounts of great events, such as the Great Plague of London, the Second Dutch War and the Great Fire of London. Condition: In cloth bindings. Externally, sound and smart but with some bumping and wear to extremities, occasional slight rubbing and marks to boards. Three hinges strained. Internally, generally firmly bound although strained in places. Bright but with handling marks and odd slight foxing, in particular to first and last pages, adm spotting in places to text block edges. Overall: VERY GOOD.

Arlent Edwards after an original oil painting from 1798 or 1799, thus immediately creating an engraving not described in the catalogue! Published by the Grolier Club in an edition of only 425 copies. An excellent association: Jacobs was a close contemporary of Wells, the highest earning writer of his day, and a superb technician.

      1903. Watercolor and Chinese white on paper, measuring 9 by 13 inches. Attractively matted and framed. Signed by Rackham in the lower left, and dated 16.1.03. Rackham depicts a shipwrecked mariner aboard a crude raft formed of planks and a barrel. The figure shown is a vision of wrecked humanity, dressed in rags, sitting on the his haunches with his head in his hands, he stared ahead with a mad glare. Around him are the bones of his shipmates, as well as bloodied cutlery. Behind him, a tattered black flag flutters, behind which one can see a pair of gulls. This early fantasy work likely resulted from Rackham's attendance of the regular meetings of the Langham Sketching Club, of which he had become a member in 1902. Members of the Club would agree on a subject and have two hours in which to complete the artwork, which could be done in any medium. It was around this time that Rackham began to show his fantasy work instead of his more conventional paintings in exhibitions, largely due to the influence of his wife, Edyth. The figure at the center of this work recalls the darker figures that haunt the realm of fairy tales. Apparently unpublished, this is a fine example of Rackham's earlier work.

      (Vienna, c. 1903). 9 7/8 by 8 1/4 inches. (11)ff. Contains nine early color photographs, matted in brown cardboard and bound in. The front endpaper is inscribed "Karniow / August - September 1903." The photographs show a family on vacation by a lake, horseback riding, and in elaborate local costume. One of the figures bears a resemblance to Paul Kraus, an early Wiener Werkstatte member. Bound in Wiener Werkstatte block-printed fabric in gray, black, white, and blue. This is certainly among the earliest book bindings by the WW, and probably the first album bound in their workshop. Spine toned and and tears in cloth along spine, without any missing cloth, else fine. Protected in a modern clamshell box. This is a unique item.

This is signed => no. 1 of an edition of 150 on Japan paper (there were also 10 on "papier vélin" re-imposed in 4s) color printed and with watercoloring after the original by Henri Caruchet, the coloring executed under his direction by artists at the atelier of A. Charpentier et Fils. The title-page is printed in red and black, with Soeur Béatrix's face in a central medallion of blue, grey, and white. This volume for connoisseurs offers two distinct parts: first, the text printed and all the illustrations present as fully colored, delicately washed in shades of pink, blue, purple, grey, white, and earth tones; and second, a set of the illustrations in proofs uncolored and without text. Most of the illustrations in both suites are => initialed by Caruchet. Jean Emmanuel Charles Nodier (1780–1844) was a French author and librarian, appointed to the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal in 1824. His literary style => much influenced the Romantics, including Victor Hugo and Alfred de Musset. This legend, first published in La Revue de Paris (1838), is representative of his fantastical oeuvre. It was later adapted into a French opera (Béatrice, 1914) and a film (1923). Signed Binding: Crushed half milk chocolate morocco over marbled paper boards signed "V. Champs," gilt author, title, and date to spine; patterned marbled endpapers (different from the covers). Original gilt and hand-colored stiff cream wrappers bound in, showing Béatrix full-figure on the front, her hands extended outward beneath the gilt title. Provenance: An initialed ink inscription beneath the Justification du tirage states this copy was "Offert à Madame Conquet" — who must have been related to => M.L. Conquet, "the great Paris publisher of works of the romantic school," whose publications were famous for being very limited editions and for the "high artistic quality of their illustrations" ("Books and Authors," The New York Times, 26 March 1898). Carteret, V, 141; Vicaire, VI, 179. Binding as above. One small nick on the front leather near the spine, and board extremities (paper and leather) lightly rubbed. The publisher's embossed authentication stamp below the limitation statement. Text clean, unblemished. => Simply, excellent.

      Edinburgh - John Grant, 1903 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A smart set of the novels of French author Victor Hugo, translated by various authors. Witheighty-four captionedtissue-guardedplates, collated complete. Containing Les Miserables (in five volumes), Notre-Dame of Paris (four volumes, bound in two), Laughing Man four volumes, bound in two), Toilers of the Sea (four volumes, bound in two), Han of Iceland (in one volume), Ninety Three (in one volume), Last Day of A Condemned Claude Gueux (in one volume) and Bug Jargal (in one volume). Like many young writers of his generation, Hugo was profoundly influenced by Franois-Ren de Chateaubriand, the famous figure in the literary movement of Romanticism and France's preeminent literary figure during the early 19th century. In his youth, Hugo resolved to be Chateaubriand or nothing, and his life would come to parallel that of his predecessor in many ways. Like Chateaubriand, Hugo would further the cause of Romanticism, become involved in politics as a champion of Republicanism, and be forced into exile due to his political stances. Hugo's first full-length novel would be the enormously successful Notre-Dame de Paris (The Hunchback of Notre-Dame), which was published in 1831 and quickly translated into other languages across Europe. One of the effects of the novel was to shame the City of Paris into restoring the much-neglected Cathedral of Notre Dame, which was attracting thousands of tourists who had read the popular novel. The book also inspired a renewed appreciation for pre-Renaissance buildings, which thereafter began to be actively preserved. His last novel, Quatre-vingt-treize (Ninety-Three), published in 1874, dealt with a subject that Hugo had previously avoided: the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution. Though Hugo's popularity was on the decline at the time of its publication, many now consider Ninety-Three to be a work on par with Hugo's better-known novels. Portrait; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; Alexander Hamilton was a Founding Father of the United States, chief of staff to General Washington, one of the most influential interpreters and promoters of the Constitution, the founder of the nation's financial system, and the founder of the first American political party. As Secretary of the Treasury, Hamilton was the primary author of the economic policies of the George Washington administration, especially the funding of the state debts by the Federal government, the establishment of a national bank, a system of tariffs, and friendly trade relations with Britain. He became the leader of the Federalist Party, created largely in support of his views, and was opposed by the Democratic-Republican Party, led by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Hamilton served in the American Revolutionary War. At the start of the war, he organized an artillery company and was chosen as its captain. He later became the senior aide-de-camp and confidant to General George Washington, the American commander-in-chief. He served again under Washington in the army raised to defeat the Whiskey Rebellion, a tax revolt of western farmers in 1794. In 1798, Hamilton called for mobilization against France after the XYZ Affair and secured an appointment as commander of a new army, which he trained for a war. However, the Quasi-War, although hard-fought at sea, was never officially declared. In the end, President John Adams found a diplomatic solution that avoided war. Born out of wedlock and raised in the West Indies, Hamilton was effectively orphaned at about the age of 11. Recognized for his abilities and talent, he was sponsored by people from his community to go to the North American mainland for his education. He attended King's College (now Columbia University) , in New York City. After the American Revolutionary War, Hamilton was elected to the Continental Congress from New York. He resigned to practice law and founded the Bank of New York. Hamilton was among those dissatisfied with the Articles of Confederation-the first attempt at a national governing document-because it lacked an executive, courts, and taxing powers. He led the Annapolis Convention, which successfully influenced Congress to issue a call for the Philadelphia Convention in order to create a new constitution. He was an active participant at Philadelphia and helped achieve ratification by writing 51 of the 85 installments of the Federalist Papers, which supported the new constitution and to this day is the single most important source for Constitutional interpretation. In the new government under President George Washington, Hamilton was appointed the Secretary of the Treasury. An admirer of British political systems, Hamilton was a nationalist who emphasized strong central government and successfully argued that the implied powers of the Constitution could be used to fund the national debt, assume state debts, and create the government-owned Bank of the United States. These programs were funded primarily by a tariff on imports and later also by a highly controversial excise tax on whiskey. Embarrassed when an extra-marital affair from his past became public, Hamilton resigned from office in 1795 and returned to the practice of law in New York. He kept his hand in politics and was a powerful influence on the cabinet of President Adams (1797-1801). Hamilton's opposition to Adams' re-election helped cause his defeat in the 1800 election. When in the same contest Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr tied for the presidency in the electoral college, Hamilton helped defeat Burr, whom he found unprincipled, and elect Jefferson despite philosophical differences. After failing to support Adams, the Federalist candidate, Hamilton lost some national prominence within the party. Vice President Burr later ran for governor in New York State, but Hamilton's influence in his home state was strong enough to prevent a Burr victory. Taking offense at some of Hamilton's comments, Burr challenged him to a duel and mortally wounded Hamilton, who died within days. He had the role (but not the title) of Senate Majority leader. He is best known for his positions on foreign policy, especially his battle with President Woodrow Wilson in 1919 over the Treaty of Versailles. Lodge demanded Congressional control of declarations of war; Wilson refused and the United States Senate never ratified the Treaty nor joined the League of Nations. A BEAUTIFUL COPY OF ONE OF THE MOST PLEASING BOOKS PRINTED AT THE PRESS. This work reprints in “exact” facsimile the first printing of any book on fishing ever printed in England. The interest of the "Treatyse of Fysshynge Wyth an Angle" lies not only in its priority in the field of fishing literature, but also because it has served as a literary quarry to many succeeding writers on fishing, and it also established a high moral value for the craft of fishing and is responsible for "having assigned in popular estimation to the angler his meditative and gentle nature". The Renaissance designed plates are famous for showing the first illustration of a person fishing with hook and line, and for the additional cuts throughout the text depicting hooks, all manners of fishing tools, types of lines for floating or sinking, and various and sundry other fishing devices. Juliana Berners (or Barnes or Bernes) (b. 15th century), English writer on heraldry, hawking and hunting, is said to have been prioress of Sopwell nunnery near St Albans. Her book on fishing was the first known book on fishing by a woman. She was probably brought up at court and, after she adopted the religious life, she still retained her love of hawking, hunting and fishing, and her passion for field sports. She is the supposed author of the work generally known as the Boke of St Albans, of which the first and rarest edition was printed in 1486 by an unknown schoolmaster at St Albans. The only clue to the authorship of the Treatise, and the documentary evidence of her, is an attribution at the end of the original 1496 book which reads “Explicit Dam Julyans Barnes in her boke of huntying.” Her name was changed by Wynkyn de Worde to “Dame Julyans Bernes.”

This exquisite suite of 30 single page color printed woodblocks precedes Sekka's MOMOYOGUSA by a decade. As in MOMOYOGUSA, many of the prints are printed and overprinted using opaque and metallic inks to produce a sumptuous surface. 6 of the interleaved tissue sheets are the original poem-printed ones, which are seldom found. The full suite of 54 plates was completed and published as a three volume set in 1903. The copy we have is made up of the 10 three print fascicles for volume one that Unsodo issued on a monthly basis. The condition of the prints is very good, the impressions excellent. It would seem to have been bound up into the volume one covers by Unsodo, although the original front cover is missing. With the ad page and title from the original parts bound in, but missing the short preface and title page of the later bound version of volume one. With all 30 prints for volume one, complete.

Bright printed colour differentiating ranges of altitudes, scale one inch to 120 English statute miles, ink stamp of the Revue des Generale des Sciences to the upper right of the map. Dissected into 30 sections and mounted on linen, marbled paper to the folded end sections, one side with a Stanford's label also bearing the Revue's stamp, housed within original cloth slipcase with another Stanford label to the upper board. Some wear to the edges of the case, but generally in very good condition, an excellent example of an interesting and visually very striking map.

This is one of just three Vale Press books to be printed in the handsome uncial King's fount, which was Charles Ricketts' own favorite of his type designs. Ricketts traced the origins of roman type back to the early Italian printers' efforts to recapture the letter forms of Carolingian minuscule, in which the classical alphabet of Roman times survived without the embellishments and abbreviations of the Gothic. Skeptical about whether the type would be well received and appreciated, Ricketts decided to use it in only three books, which were produced in fewer numbers than other productions of the press. The present work was the first in which it appeared, and gave the typeface its name. Assertive without being distracting, the King's fount is unlike any other typeface produced by the private press movement, and strongly invokes the ninth century manuscripts by which it was inspired. The text here is a substantial poem in rhyme-royal, "The Kingis Quair," or "King's Quire" (i.e., "King's Book"), composed in England in 1423-24 by James I of Scotland (1394-1437). James had been captured by the English at the age of 12 and detained for 19 years, during which time he became both well educated and betrothed to Lady Jane Beaufort, the heroine of the poem. The work is both imaginative and autobiographical, recounting the plight of a love-struck royal prisoner and his (eventually successful) entreaties of Minerva, Venus, and Fortune to aid him in his quest for Lady Jane's hand. The poem, which shows the influence of Chaucer, was discovered and first printed in 1783, and later was quoted by Rossetti in his "The King's Tragedy," a work that has James, assassinated at Perth when he was 43, as its main character. Although it does not bear his book label, this volume comes from bibliophile Laurence Hodson's complete collection of Vale Press books on vellum and on paper. Apart from our volume, only one copy of the vellum "King's Quair" appears in ABPC since 1975 (sold in 1986 for a hammer price of £1,000).

Gilt title, author, and date to spine along with four raised bands. There is minor sunning to the spine and edges of the boards. The interior remains very clean and bright although there is browning to the edges of the end papers. The title page is printed in red and black with a woodcut border. Woodcut initials are printed throughout. Arrhenius was awarded the 1903 Nobel Prize in chemistry "in recognition of the extraordinary services he has rendered to the advancement of chemistry by his electrolytic theory of dissociation." By 1880, "it was known that solutions of certain compounds conduct electricity and that chemical reactions could occur when a current was passed. It was thought that the current decomposed the substance. In 1883 Arrhenius proposed a theory that substances were partly converted into an active form when dissolved. The active part was responsible for conductivity. In the case of acids and bases, he correlated the strength with the degree of decomposition on solution. This work was published as Reserches sur la conductibilite galvanique des electrolytes (1884; Researches on the Electrical Conductivity of Electrolytes) and submitted as his doctoral dissertation... Arrhenius sent his work to several leading physical chemists, including Jacobus van't Hoff. Friedrich Ostwald, and Rudolf Clausius, who were immediately impressed" (Biographical Encyclopedia of Scientists). This is a magnificent copy of a beautifully designed and printed translation of a major literary hoax, issued in larger imperial octavo size to be uniform with the Kelmscott Press edition of Meinhold's other Gothic novel, "Sidonia the Sorceress." Like that work, the text here tells of a young woman falsely accused, tried, and convicted of witchcraft in the 17th century. Happily, she is rescued on her way to execution by a young nobleman who loves her. But unlike "Sidonia," the present work is a fraud. A Pomeranian pastor, Meinhold (1797-1851) set out to trap certain literary scholars of the day who claimed to be able to distinguish passages in the Old and New Testaments from later additions by editors and translators. To this end, Meinhold intimated that he had uncovered a manuscript describing "the most interesting trial of witchcraft yet known," and published it in 1839 as an authentic historical account, when in fact he had made the entire thing up. To add verisimiltude, he provided sometimes lengthy annotations citing historical sources (here printed in as marginal notes that sometimes wrap around the fore and tail edges of the text, in the style of commentaries in incunabula). Critic David Strauss and his followers, the main targets of Meinhold's trick, fell into the trap, much to the author's delight. According to an article in the "Times" of London, "Meinhold did not spare them when they fell into the snare, and made merry with the historical knowledge and critical acumen that could not detect the contemporary romancer under the mask of the chronicler of two centuries ago, while they decided so positively as to the authority of the most ancient writings in the world." This clever literary trick, along with the riveting Gothic narrative itself, made "The Amber Witch" very popular in Victorian England, where it appeared in two different translations by 1850, ours (by Lucie, Lady Duff Gordon) generally being considered the superior version. It is fitting that this work, which perhaps connects the Kelmscott and Vale presses more closely than any other, should come from the library of Laurence Hodson, one of the first connoisseurs to appreciate the works of the private press revival, and a man described by Sydney Cockerell as "facile princeps" ("easily the chief") collector of Kelmscott and Vale Press books. Apart from our volume and one sold as part of a collection of bindings in 1977, the last copy of the vellum "Amber Witch" seems to have been sold at auction in 1946.

      (Chelsea): Ashendene Press, (1903). Complete set of eleven woodblocks by Charles Keates used to print the illustrations in this edition. The blocks vary in size, the largest being 3 9/16 inches by 4 1/2 inches from the frontispiece, depicting the angler about to grab his fish with the city wall not far from the river. This pleasant scene includes the crack in the lines of the water from the original version, which Keates recreated. All blocks are in fine condition.

        Treatyse of Fysshynge wyth an Angle

      (Chelsea): Ashendene Press, (1903). Octavo. 48pp. One of 150 copies. Inscribed by St. John Hornby to "WMH," indicating his brother William Maysey Hornby. Illustrated with a full-page frontispiece depicting the angler about to grab his fish and many smaller woodcuts by Charles Keates illustrating the tools of the sport. Printed in black with one initial in red. The text is taken from the Boke of St. Albans, printed at Westmestre by Wynkyn de Worde in 1496, and the woodcuts were faithfully reproduced from the same. Faint foxing to edges, not affecting the interior, else very fine in full vellum, gilt lettered on the spine.
