AMERICAN BOOKBINDINGS IN THE LIBRARY OF HENRY WILLIAM POOR ... ILLUSTRATED IN GOLD-LEAF AND COLORS BY EDWARD BIERSTADT

Jamaica, NY: Printed at the Marion Press / Published by George D. Smith, 1903.. 77pp. Ribbed cloth, stamped in gilt. Frontis and thirty-eight color plates. Cloth lightly rubbed at corners and lightly handsoiled, some inevitable offsetting from the color plates to the facing page (though minimized by the presence of tissue guards between opposed plates), but a very good copy. First edition. One of two hundred numbered copies on Dutch handmade paper, in addition to three copies on vellum and thirty-five on Japan vellum. A remarkable achievement in color printing for the time, reproducing with amazing depth and fidelity bindings by Smith, the Club Bindery, Bradstreet, Matthews, et al. The descriptive text suffers no restraint in singing the glories of Mr. Poor's bindings, though from today's vantage point, with one or two exceptions, the bindings themselves are thin soup compared to the effort involved in their reproduction here. A highpoint of the Marion Press's output. ROGERS 61.

Principal Navigations, Voyages, Traffiques & Discoveries

Glasgow: 1903 -, 1905. 12 volumes, octavo, illustrated throughout with maps (many folding), proof impressions of the plates; a few scuffs but an excellent set in the original quarter parchment gilt over blue cloth boards, top edges gilt others uncut. Classic English collection of voyages. A fine set of the famous Maclehose edition of Hakluyt. This handsome production reprints the second and best edition of Hakluyt's magnum opus, a classic of travel literature, the first English collection of voyages, and one of the gems of Elizabethan letters. Hakluyt himself was the first lecturer on modern geography and one of the leading spirits of Elizabethan maritime expansion (PMM). The work is devoted to American discoveries and the British colonisation of America, and although published a few years before the Dutch voyage of the Duyfken to the west coast of Cape York in 1605, it is significant that by the time of the revised second edition, Hakluyt was able to include the first tentative forays of the English into the South Seas, whether round Cape Horn or through the Straits of Magellan. As a result, Hakluyt's book represents the pinnacle of Elizabethan geography, but is also among the earliest published works on British expansion into the Pacific. The final part, originally published in 1600, includes most of the New World material, not only cataloguing many of the early American discoveries, but also representing the cusp of early voyages into the Pacific, notably in the section entitled "A Catalogue of divers English voyages, some intended and some performed to the Streights of Magellan, the South Sea… to the headland of California, and to the Northwest…". Printed here are not only reports of the voyages of Drake and several of his compatriots, there is an early account of the important 1586 voyage of Thomas Cavendish, and discussions of major voyages which were destined for the South Seas but failed to round Cape Horn, including those of Edward Fenton (intended for China), Robert Withrington, and the failed 1591 second voyage of Cavendish. The Maclehose edition is considered the finest modern edition of Hakluyt. It was published as the first twelve numbers of the "Extra Series" of the Hakluyt Society. This is the deluxe issue, from an edition of 100 copies, without the limitation leaf (apparently so issued).

THE WOODLANDERS (PRESENTATION COPY Inscribed By the Author)

London: Macmillan, 1903. Hardy, Thomas. THE WOODLANDERS. With a map of Wessex. London: Macmillan, 1903. Later edition in original publisher's blue cloth with gilt decoration and lettering. A Fine, fresh copy of this attractive (one corner bumped) reprint neatly INSCRIBED by the author and dated 1907. The recipient is unknown to us and no clue is offered by Hardy's unusually enigmatic PRESENTATION inscription (see photos). The volume has been kept in impeccable condition for over a century and boasts excellent eye appeal. Hardy presentation copies are far rarer than simple signed copies. He wrote fourteen novels yet the combined total of recorded first edition presentations is less than twenty (!) thus later presentations such as this are, to our mind, quite desirable. Purdy p. 57. Inscribed By Author. Decorative Cloth. Fine.

Reminiscences of Fifty Years' Residence in Western Australia

Western Australia: Sands & McDougall, 1903. Large octavo, photographic illustrations; in excellent condition, green half calf by Sangorski. A western settler made good. An excellent copy of this rather scarce and most interesting account of colonial life in Western Australia. The author, Joesph Thomas Reilly (1836-1915), was an Irishman who spent part of his childhood in India, before leaving Ireland after the famine of 1849. His family sailed on the Pyrenees in 1851, and Reilly had a long and prosperous career in the west as a journalist and founding editor of the Western Australian Catholic Record. A great deal of the book is taken up with education and religion, but is mostly a fascinating social history. As with many such works in the Edwards collection, Reilly's account is also interesting for some reflections on the Aborigines, particularly as regards the early missions. See a long note on Reilly and his 'massive and unedited' autobiography in the Australian Dictionary of Bibliography.

The Work of John S. Sargent: With an Introductiory Note by Mrs. Meynell [First Edition, John Singer Sargent]

William Heinemann Ltd, London 1903 - FIRST EDITION. Sixty-Two (62) full page black and white plates of the works of John Singer Sargent. Full brown cloth with gilt lettering and the initial S surrounded by wheat sheves on front cover. The gilding is starting to fade on cover. Red leather label with gilt lettering on spine bright and unfaded. Books is lightly shelf worn. Small avertisment for this book pasted behind front board. Binding a little shaken. Else in VERY GOOD condition and a great gift item for the John Singer Sargent enthusiast.John Singer Sargent (January 12, 1856 – April 14, 1925) was the most successful portrait painter of his era, as well as a gifted landscape painter and watercolorist. He was an American expatriate who lived most of his life in Europe. Sargent was born in Florence, Italy to American parents. He studied in Italy and Germany, and then in Paris under Emile Auguste Carolus-Duran. Sargent's portraits subtly capture the individuality and personality of the sitters; his most ardent admirers think he is matched in this only by Diego Velázquez, who was one of Sargent's great influences. The Spanish master's spell is apparent in Sargent's The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit, 1882, a haunting interior which echoes Velázquez' Las Meninas. Sargent's Portrait of Madame X, done in 1884, is now considered one of his best works, and was the artist's personal favorite. However, at the time it was unveiled in Paris at the 1884 Salon, it aroused such a negative reaction that it prompted Sargent to move to London. Many years before the Mme. X. scandal of 1884, he painted exotic beauties such as Rosina Ferrara of Capri, and the Spanish expatriate model, Carmela Bertagna. An Essay in Aid of A Grammar of Assent

London - Longmans, Green and Co., 1903. London - Longmans, Green and Co., 1903 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A scarce edition of this theological essay by John Henry Newman. An Essay in Aid of a Grammar of Assent (commonly abbreviated to the last three words) is John Henry Newman's seminal work. While it was completed in 1870, Newman revealed to friends that it took him 20 years to write the book. Newman's aim was to show that the scientific standards for evidence and assent are too narrow and inapplicable in concrete life. He argued that logic and its conclusions are not transferable to real life decision making as such. As a result, it is inappropriate to judge the validity of assent in concrete faith by conventional logical standards because paper logic is unequal to the task. Condition: In a cloth binding. Externally, generally smart, though with some light bumping. Internally, generally firmly bound although slightly strained in places. Institutional ink stamps to the half-title. Pages are bright and clean. Overall: VERY GOOD..
