Form & Farbe im Fla¨chenschmuck

Stuttgart.: Julius Hoffman., No date. Ca. 1903.. Stuttgart.: Julius Hoffman.. No date. Ca. 1903.. 13 ONLY (of 24) color lithograph plates, sheets 18 x 13 inches, cloth covered thin boards (hardbound). Covers moderately soiled; the plates are in excellent condition with light spots to a few outer margins. AS IS. This is a gathering of 13 of the plates from the collection Form & Farbe im Flachenschmuck, originally published in a portfolio but here bound into a serviceable cloth binding; paint marks on the cover suggest that it was actually used in an artist's studio. A paper label for the bookstore Ludvig Schuth of Kobenhavn has been glued over the what was likely the original publisher's name. Each plate features a number of stunning Art Nouveau wall covering designs by artists Rudolph Rochga and Paul Haustein. While the visual motif is overwhelmingly Art Nouveau, a number of the panels hint at the Deco stylistics to emerge in upcoming decades. .

Verlagsanzeigen. extrem selten! Odes From the Divan of Hafiz, Freely Rendered from Literal Translations

New York: Privately Printed, 1903. New York: Privately Printed,, 1903. Quarto. Original vellum-backed Hollande boards, spine with raised bands and gilt titles. Covers marked, rubbed and somewhat scratched at the spine, slight spotting to some early and late leaves. Still a very good copy. First edition thus of the poems of Hafiz, the 14th century Persian mystic; one of 300 numbered small paper copies signed by Richard le Gallienne, from an edition of 335 copies privately printed for the author at the Heintzemann Press, Boston, in June 1903. Le Gallienne has added a personal inscription to the signature on the limitation leaf so that it reads, "from Richard Le Gallienne, to D." Odes from the Divan of Hafiz is the first book produced by Le Gallienne (once a prominent figure of London's decadent 1890s, a member with W. B. Yeats of the Rhymer's Club, a reader for Elkin Mathews, a collaborator with Aubrey Beardsley on the Yellow Book, and author of the once-popular "Quest for the Golden Girl") from the United States, after his emigration there due to the break-up of his marriage to Julie Norregard earlier that year. The binding is intriguing for being in a markedly Kelmscott style though produced in America, thanks to Le Gallienne's private printing directives in trying to take something of the English aesthetic with him. The text includes a lengthy introductory disquisition by Le Gallienne on the superiority of his poetical translation to the more "literal" translations of Colonel Wilberforce Clarke (Calcutta 1891) and John Payne (London 1901) (from whom he took his text), professing that he has, "by a literal unfaithfulness, achieve[d] the essential faithfulness" to the music and the epicurean spirit of Hafiz's original.
