        Author's Edition.

London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1903 - 12 volumes, octavo, (205 x 138 mm). Near-contemporary red crushed half morocco by Bayntun, titles and centre tool gilt to spines, raised bands, red cloth sides, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. Binder's stamp to front free endpaper verso. 20th-century bookseller's cataloguing laid-in. Spines uniformly faded, tiny abrasion to fore edge of rear cover to Brigadier Gerard, minor browning to margins of endpapers; an excellent set. Title pages printed in red and black. Frontispieces and 12 plates, all with captioned tissue-guards. Signed limited edition, number 282 of 1,000 sets signed by the author. The Author's Edition was a joint publication, consisting of 12 volumes published in England by Smith, Elder & Co. and 13 volumes published in the USA by D. Appleton & Co. Only the first 510 sets were bound by Smith, Elder; the remaining 490 were reissued by John Murray with new title pages in 1917, though still marked 1903. The set collects Doyle's stories written between 1891 and 1903. The 13 volumes hold 12 novels and 5 collected series (61 short stories). The English issues omit the thirteenth volume, The Hound of the Baskervilles, but only the English sets were signed by Doyle, and they have two plates in each volume, rather than one. Doyle "considered this edition of his works to be of great importance: he revised parts, and added notes and a number of special introductions" (Green & Gibson). The set has a 1902 copyright in Doyle's name, made possible by the introductory material and those works which had appeared after the new Copyright Act had taken effect, but it was originally published in September 1903. Green & Gibson A60. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

I Sommi Pontefici Romani (The Roman Pontiffs)

      L. Ferloni, Roma, Italy 1903 - A book containing 253 chromolithographic postcards featuring popes beginning with St. Peter through Pius X. The postcards are inserted into the book three to a page and the colors are dramatic and vibrant. The cards indicate where the pope was born, what years they held the papacy and where they died (or are buried?). Some of the images are quite dramatic. Pope Pontian (Ponzianus), #245 in the card sequence who served from 230 to 235 has an image of a someone about to throw a dagger into his back as he is praying, likely a reference to the fact that he was arrested while serving and sentenced to death. Binding in good condition, all pages and cards present. Rare. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Lady Diana Beauclerk, Her Life and Work

Hardback. Very Good. T Fisher Unwin, London, 1903, first edition. This edition is one of twelve copies, this copy being numbered 1. 4to, pp xvi, 316; printed on thick imitation vellum paper and quarter bound with a vellum spine over brown laid paper boards and with a simple printed paper label to the spine, top edge gilt; eight full page coloured plates with tissue guards, a full page steel engraving and another in photogravure and over 100 other illustrations, mainly in the text but some also as full page plates; spine vellum somewhat speckled, corners a little rubbed or bumped, occasional light foxing, very slight cracking between signatures b and B but otherwise firm, clean and in very good condition. Neatly written dedication in ink manuscript on the front end paper to Lady Beatrice Taylor "with affectionate wishes from Pearl Mary Teresa Craigie November 26 1903". I can't identify with any certainty the dedicatee but the dedicator is most likely the US Boston-born Pearl Mary Teresa Richards (1867-1906) who became a successful novelist and dramatist under the name John Oliver Hobbes and who lived from 1900 on the Isle of Wight. Lady Diana Beauclerk, Viscountess Bolingbroke, neé Lady Diana Spencer, (1734-1808) was the daughter of the 3rd Duke of Marlborough and the Honble. Elizabeth Trevor. Her first marriage to Lord Bolingbroke, which produced two hildren, was ended by Parliamentary petition by her husband, alleging adultery, and she immediately married Topham Beauclerk, great grandson on Charles II, with whom she had four children and who, to her apparent relief, predeceased her. If not in the absolute first rank of artists she was nevertheless highly skilled and well regarded, particularly by Horace Walpole (who devoted a special closet at Strawberry Hill for a range of seven large designs, comparing them favourably to others by Salvator Rosa) and by Sir Joshua Reynolds whose painting of her was the basis for a popular engraving. She illustrated several books, the paintings duly engraved by Bartolozzi or his pupils and several of her designs were used on Wedgwood pottery. Although the text is available in reprint form this is an opportunity to obtain a copy of the much better produced and necessarily very scarce special edition of a dozen copies. Because this is copy number one of that very limited edition and in turn presented by a later writer of note with both UK and US strong links makes the opportunity that much more significant and, indeed, unique. Lady Di, as she was widely known, was cousin to Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire, and both through her and on her own account moved in a glittering social circle. NOTE: this volume weighs almost 3kg and so will attract a small postage supplement over the default prices, subject to destination.

A man of great vitality, killed in a duel, swears to have revenge as he lies dying. His spirit possesses the bodies of the other duelist's friends and causes much mischief." - Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, pp. 51-2.         Psychiatrie. Ein Lehrbuch für Studierende und Ärzte. 2 Bde.

Siebte, vielfach umgearbeitete Auflage. - Leipzig, Verlag von J.A. September 1903. E. Kraepelin." Vorwort zur 7. Auflage.

Original quarter japon, spine lettered in gilt, monogram and 5-point coronet gilt to backstrip on front board, blue cloth sides, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. With the dust jacket. Small bump to head of spine, pale mottling to front board. A superb copy, almost entirely unopened, in the dust jacket with a faded spine and shallow chipping at spine- and joint-ends. First and only edition, "printed for private circulation" (title page), five copies only traced in British and Irish libraries, ten worldwide (all in South Africa or the USA), and an extremely uncommon survival in the dust jacket.         The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come

New York: Charles Scribner Son's, 1903 This powerful novel is one of the most perceptive tellings of the Civil War experience. This book is more than the moving story of a Kentucky mountain boy who fights to save the Union. Even the Civil War itself is but an epic stage for the novel's main business--the testing and maturation of a hero as American as Huck Finn or Tom Sawyer.Susannah Hart, the aunt of Mrs. Henry Clay, raised and pulled the flax which she wove and spun into her wedding gown, with an art so clever that she could draw the width through her wedding ring. She belonged to the wealthiest of those early families of note, and was the wife of Gov. Isaac Shelby. She died at the age of seventy-two years at "Travelers' Rest," the grand old homestead which has never passed out of the Shelby family. She was the mother of ten children, and her descendants are widely scattered. Mary Hopkins Cabell Breckinridge was a contemporary whose work can never die. Hers were not deeds of daring nor of tragic from the lurking Indian. Her power was in her eloquent conversation, her strong opinions, her decided views of duty. Her sons are orators and statesmen; her daughters are ambitious and progressive. Margaret Breckinridge, a granddaughter, devoted heart and hands to hospital work during the war of the Blue and the Grey; and by her gentle, self-sacrificing ministering was named the "Angel of the hospitals." She said, "Shall men die by thousands for their country and no woman risk her life?" Still a younger generation is led by Miss Sophronisba Breckinridge, who after years of travel in Europe, studied law in her father's office. Mrs. Catherine Hunt, the chatelaine of one of Lexington's proud homes, reigned a queen in her domain. The train of servants, the management of her handsome estate and all the demands upon the mistress of such possessions, called for executive ability of rare degree. Hers was the thinking head and the guiding hand. The Baroness Burdett Coutts says: "Woman may be allowed to lead in acts of charity," and right nobly has she set this example. This woman, Mrs. Hunt, used her prerogative here. Sixty-one years ago, when cholera wellnigh depopulated the Blue Grass capital, she went forth on pious mission bent. Coming upon three desolate little children, whose parents lay dead, she said to a friend: "What shall we do with them? Let us buy them a home." She opened her purse and established the Orphans' Home, Lexington's oldest charitable institution, where many little feet have found a resting place. Mrs. Henrietta Hunt Morgan was her daughter, and the Hon. Francis Kay Hunt, of legal celebrity, was her worthy son. Mrs. Morgan presided over her household much after the manner of her bringing up. She was the mother of a remarkable family. Her sons were Gen. John Hunt Morgan, Col. Calvin Morgan, Capt. Charlton Hunt Morgan, and Lieut. Thomas Morgan. Her daughters were the wives of Gen. A. P. Hill and of Gen. Basil W. Duke. Behold the evolution of the Kentucky girl, if I may so term the greater liberty of today! Mrs. Henrietta Morgan Duke, of Louisville, Ky., one of our commissioners, is a woman of incomparable qualities of heart and brain. She reflects the grandmother and mother in strength of character and in executive ability. Times have changed, and she has risen to the demands. Her young daughter, Miss Carrie Duke, the violin virtuoso, represents the fourth generation of this family. The ancient code would have held her captive, but the liberty of the present sent her abroad to develop the divine genius that now sways multitudes. Another young descendant of Mrs. Hunt is Miss Lucy Lee Hill, a World's Fair Commissioner, who bravely and briskly went about the work of collecting exhibits; faithfully she has presided at the state building. Yet another great-granddaughter is Miss Eleanor Howard Morgan, daughter of Capt. Charlton Morgan, who entered Bryn Mawr College, where her scientist brother, Dr. Thomas Morgan, holds the chair of biology. This young girl perfectly illustrates the fact that developing a woman's brain does not necessarily rob her of feminine charm. No lily of the valley, breathing its delicate fragrance far below the gaze of man, is more modestly environed; yet her influence pervades all the atmosphere about her. She inherits, not the dash of her uncle, the cavalry chief, but the steady glow of woman's star when lit by the brilliancy of intellectual fire

[SECOND ANGLO-BOER WAR] The Nubia Lyre. The unofficial organ of H.M.T. No. 4. Commander F.J. Fox. Special Law edition. Wednesday 5th August 1903. In aid of Seamen's Charities.

[At sea] : HMHS "Nubia", 1903. Foolscap roneo-printed shipboard newspaper, illustrated front cover (detached, stained and with some loss at edges), original brass rivets, 44 pp, including 3 original shipboard albumen print photographs and a gouache drawing by S.P. Sabin laid in; contents clean and sound. Rare. SS Nubia was a passenger-cargo steamer built for the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company and launched in December 1894. Between 1899 and 1903, during the Second Anglo-Boer War, Nubia was used as a hospital and transport ship, making several return voyages between Southampton and Durban, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town. The Nubia Lyre appears completely unrecorded. The newspaper is entirely satirical and was written for the amusement of wounded soldiers and the ship's crew, all returning to England from South Africa on the Nubia's last voyage as a hospital ship. The copy we offer here was saved for posterity by one of the contributors, S.P. Sabin, who was the ship's 4th Officer. It was loosely inserted in Sabin's album of memorabilia documenting his career as a P. & O. employee. Provenance: Sabin's complete album was sold by Christie's, London, in 2001; with some items removed, the album was subsequently offered for sale through Swann Galleries, New York, Maps & Atlases, Natural History and Color Plate Books, December 8 2016, lot 391.

1903 - London: Frederick Warne and Co., 1903. Original maroon paper-covered boards with cover pictorial onlay. First Trade Edition, first printing, of Beatrix Potter's second book. PETER RABBIT first came out in two private printings in 1901, followed by its trade edition in 1902; a privately-printed edition of THE TAILOR OF GLOUCESTER came out in 1902; next came the first (trade) edition of SQUIRREL NUTKIN in August 1903, followed by this trade edition of THE TAILOR OF GLOUCESTER in October.~This title had two printings dated 1903: the first (including this copy) has identical facing endpapers, whereas the second has mirror-image facing endpapers. The trade edition was bound in either maroon or dark green paper-covered boards with front cover illustration, or in a floral-patterned fabric without (no priority). This is a very attractive, close-to-fine copy (maroon spine very slightly faded as usual, very minor soil at a corner of the rear cover); atypically, the original endpapers are intact.         GABRIEL" sur "MORS" depasse pour la premiere fois une moyenne de 100 a l'heure sur route Gagnant la course Paris-Madrid 1903 (600 kilom a une moyenne de 106 l'heure).

Mabileau & Co. Paris 1903 - Hand-coloured pochoir print, laid on board. Size: 90.5 cm x 45 cm. The Gamy-Montaut prints document various historical events in the early history of transportation, including Power Boat Racing, Motorcycle and Motor Car Racing, Motor Car Touring, Zeppelins and Tennis. Having observed the rapidly growing interest in cars and racing during the early years of motor cars, Ernest Montaut produced his first motoring prints in the mid-1890s, and by 1897, his drawings were pictorial records of the many races in France. Montaut's work was extremely well received in the Paris of his day and was shown in the fashionable shops of the Rue de l'Opera and Rue de la Paix, as well as in the better galleries. Marguerite Montaut, Ernest's wife, joined him in his work producing not only racing prints but also developing a fine series of aviation prints commemorating such events as the first flights on the early European mail routes. While Marguerite Montaut's works were occasionally signed "M. Montaut", she also used the name "Gamy", an anagram for Magy. The Gamy-Montaut prints were all produced by the pochoir process in which the outlines for each image were drawn onto lithographic stones and printed. Using these uncoloured prints as a template, elaborate stencils were cut for each colour. Water-colour was then brushed onto the image through the stencil. The colouring process was quite complex, with each print taking several days to produce. It was also quite labour intensive, and the studio of Gamy-Montaut therefore employed a group of trained artists, including Nevil and Campion, to assist in the colouring. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

-- One of the earliest books using the autochrome Lumiere technic. - Very rare book with 60 plates in autochrome Lumiere technic. -- front cover a bit stained at bottom - otherwise in very good condition. - extremely rare when complete!!

[International Books, antiquarian department] to lower pastedown. Contemporary brown calf on wooden boards, decorative floral ornaments in blind to boards and spine, red morocco label with title in blind to spine, red edges; lacking one clasp. Beautiful illuminated manuscript produced by one of the best scribes of the early XX century Russia; very fresh and in its original binding. The text, accompanied by 19 full page watercolours highlighted in gilt, presents the life of the Byzantine monk Feodor (759—826) known to have been one of the biggest authorities of asceticism in his time. The colophon lists not only the name of the creator of the manuscript, scribe Blinov, but also points to the original source of this text – a book dated 7096 as from the creation of the world [1588]. The manuscript has all the distinctive features of the work of the celebrated calligrapher Ivan Blinov (1872 - 1944): high quality paper; sophisticated calligraphy with the use of semi-uncial script; skillfully executed miniatures and leather binding over wooden boards in the style XVII century. Since his teenage years Blinov was engaged in copying illuminated manuscripts, taking works of the local Old Believers scribes as examples. With time he started to receive multiple commissions for manuscripts from the Nizhegorodskaya province wealthy peasants, as well as prominent collectors, who included Petr Alekseevich Ovchinnikov (1843-1912) and Grigoriy Matveevich Prianishnikov (1845-1915). It was one of Blinov's main patrons, collector Ovchinnikov, who addressed the young calligrapher with the following words: "You will become a celebrated scriptor and artist, this is the way they used to produce manuscripts for the tsars in the old days". When working on the commissions, Blinov thoroughly studied collections of the Historical museum and Tretyakovskaya gallery; library of the the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius and multiple private collections. He also collaborated with such celebrated artists as V.M. Vasnetsov, B.V. Zvorykin, M.V. Nesterov, A.I. Savin and D.S. Stelletskiy. Nowadays Blinov's manuscripts can be found in the collections of Russian State and National libraries; State Historical museum and the Historical and Architectural museum of the Nizhegorodskaya province. ___________________________________________ ???????????? ?????? ???????????????? ?????????? ????? ??????????? ????? ?? ????? ?????????? ??????????? ?????? ?? ???? ? ?????? ? ?????????? ????????? ? ????????? ???? ??????? ????? ????????, ?????????????? 19 ???????????? ???????????, ????????? ????? ????????????? ?????? ???????         Bildnis Theodor Herzl.

1903 - Soft ground etching in black and white; 60 x 50 cm, including frame. Artist's name etched in black at bottom right of etching, with his Hebrew name underneath (Haim Aaron ben David); etching glued on a white background with Theodor Herzl's own signature in pencil at the bottom right; at the bottom left of the picture is a star of David with Hermann Struck's initials in it, to its right is his signature in pencil. Very good condition. Struck's most famous work and one of the symbols of zionism - a powerful portrait of Theodor Herzl, signed by Herzl himself. Hermann Struck (1876-1944) and Theodor Herzl (1860-1904) met several times in Egypt and Vienna before this portrait etching was created in 1903. A fervent Zionist and admirer of Herzl's, Struck made his preparatory sketches for the portrait when he visited the political activist's house in Vienna. During the sixth Zionist Congress in Basel in August 1903, the two met again and on this occasion Herzl asked Struck to allow him to sign a few of the first copies of the etching. Struck depicted Herzl's visionary side by giving us the impression that he is looking towards the future. His radiance is all the more flagrant as the dark background makes his solemn face stand out. Although Struck made two additional etchings of this portrait after Herzl's death, it is the 1903 version that has remained the most famous of his works, and the most iconic of all the portraits of Theodor Herzl. Indeed, the image came to be known as one of the emblems of Zionism and has been used on various posters, products and catalogs ever since: "Within a short period of time the etching became so well known that it emerged as a symbol of Zionism, especially after the death of the charismatic leader in 1904. It was then that the portrait won the respect of all the Zionist circles. By the time the State of Israel was founded, this portrait of Theodor Herzl was considered the epitome of Zionism itself. It decorated the walls of every Zionist event, anywhere." (Hermann Struck, Printmaking Artist. Tefen Open Museum, 2007, page 38). Hermann Struck was a German-Israeli artist who gained fame for his etchings. He published a leading work on the subject, Die Kunst des Radierens, in 1908. He was commissioned to etch portraits of many leading figures of his time, including Einstein and Herzl. Struck acquired a reputation as a teacher of graphic art, and began to teach the techniques of the art print while still in Germany. Among his many students were Max Liebermann, Lovis Corinth, Marc Chagall, Jacob Steinhardt, and Joseph Budko. He moved to Haifa in 1922. Today the city has a museum dedicated to him. Theodor Herzl, a Hungarian journalist of Jewish descent, is regarded as the founding father of political Zionism. By the time the etching was made, he was already known for having chaired the first Zionist congress in 1897. In 1896, at 35 years old, he had published Der Judenstaat, Versuch einer Modernen Lösung der Judenfrage (The Jewish State, Proposal of a modern solution for the Jewish question) in Vienna. The previous year, Herzl had witnessed the Dreyfus affair in Paris and had been appalled at the outbreak of anti-Semitism that it had generated in the "birthplace of human rights". He came to the conclusion that the creation of an independent Jewish state during the 20th century would be the best way for Jews to escape European anti-Semitism. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

The Rubàiyàt of Omar Khayyàm. The Astronomer-Poet of Persia. Rendered into English Verse.

London MacMillan and Co. Limited 1903 - 8vo., (4), 112pp., contemporary vellum binding by Cedric Chivers, Bath, gilt panelled with hand-painted decoration and inlaid with mother-of-pearl to both boards and spoine, gilt panelled dentelles and linings, top edge gilt, others untrimmed; with tipped-in A.L.s. from Oliver Howard of Bernard Quaritch to his Aunt Nannie (C. Nannie Quaritch Wrentmore) as a Christmas gift, dated December 22nd, 1928, the usual age-toning to the vellum, else fine, near contemporary slip-case mounted with ink manuscript label of provenance. This is not only a rare Chivers binding but with a very relevant provenance since the tipped-in letter is from Oliver Howard of Bernard Quaritch. Quartich first published Fitzgerald's translation in 1859, the company's eponymous founder was a friend of his and Fitzgerald was a regular visitor to the shop. In the letter Howard explains: 'I expect you already have a copy of Omar, but I feel sure the binding will interest you. It has a thin transparent sheet of vellum stretched over the painting and inlay, in the manner of Edwards, the eighteenth century Halifax binder, as a protection.' Cedric Chivers, established his business in 1878 in the premises formerly occupied by Robert Riviere in Union Street, Bath. They subsequently moved to a double fronted shop at 39 Gay Street and then, as the business expanded, to a large house at Portway in Combe Park where they operated until 1990. In its prime the company experimented and specialised in highly skilled and beautiful bindings; this example being one of them. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Tale of Peter Rabbit.

London Frederick Warne & Co. April 1903 - First trade edition, fourth printing with 'shed big tears' on P. 51, 16mo., colour frontispiece, plain title vignette, 30 colour illustrations, as called for, a couple of very faint marks else near-fine, publisher's brown paper covered boards with fielded illustrative paste-down of Peter Rabbit, plain leaf pattern end-papers, the upper one with repair to gutter and scattered spotting to verso, overall an impressive example of the jewel in the author's crown. The first printing to contain the correction on page 51 from 'wept big tears' to 'shed big tears', and the last to feature the illustrations of Mrs. McGregor and the pie, the cover image and two others. Arguably rarer than the first, second and third printings as there were 8250 copies of this printing compared to the 26,220 copies of those identical earlier printings combined.
