Orville Wright signs one of the most important images in aviation history: the historic 1903 flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina

n.p., n.d. His signature, \"Orville Wright,\" at the bottom left hand corner of a printed image of Wright Flyer, 6.25\" x 4.5\", bearing the printed caption at bottom center: \"First Man-Flight, December 17, 1903 Kitty Hawk, N.C.\" Some light soiling and scuffs, minor mounting remnants (mostly to verso), small tear at top margin not affecting image, else very good condition overall. An iconic image signed by the first person to successfully pilot a motorized heavier-than-air craft. Orville can be seen lying flat at the center of the plane, while his brother Wilbur looks on at right.

RANCHING WITH LORDS AND COMMONS; OR TWENTY YEARS ON THE RANGE. BEING A RECORD OF ACTUAL FACTS AND CONDITIONS RELATING TO THE CATTLE INDUSTRY OF THE NORTHWEST TERRITORIES OF CANADA; AND COMPRISING THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF THE FORMATION AND CAREER OF A GREAT CATTLE COMPANY

Toronto: William Briggs, [1903]., 1903. First edition. 8vo. Pictorial cloth, 293 pp., preface, illustrated, plates, portraits. Six Score 25 says, "Craig was an American who became manager of the Oxley Ranch in the province of Alberta during the 1880s. The book recounts a classic example of absentee ownership [by the British lords and commons referred to in the title] and the subsequent mismanagement brought about by conflicts between Craig and the owners. This book and that by L.V. Kelly are the best two books on Canadian ranching. Craig was bitter about his experience and his narrative is one-sided. For the owner's side, see A. Staveley Hill's FROM HOME TO HOME." Former owner's inked name on front fly leaf, white ink on cover is unchipped but white ink on spine panel is moderately chipped. Overall in much better condition than most copies, and is a very good tight copy.

        THE CALL OF THE WILD

1903. [with front panel of jacket] Illustrated by Philip R. Goodwin and Charles Livingston Bull. Decorated by Chas. Edw. Hooper. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1903. 2 pp undated ads. Original olive green cloth pictorially decorated in white, black and red. First Edition. Back from Europe (from which came the source material for THE PEOPLE OF THE ABYSS), and smarting from the failure of THE DAUGHTER OF THE SNOWS, London sat down during the winter of 1902-03 to write his masterpiece. Buck, part St. Bernard and part Scotch shepherd, is reared in luxury on a California estate, is stolen, beaten and shipped to the Klondike to become a sled dog, and (after the death of his master) heeds the call of the wild and abandons human civilization to lead a wolf pack.~The novel is not so much the story of a dog that becomes a wolf as a myth about life and death and nature... Jack claimed later that he wrote it without any thought about its deeper significance as a human allegory. "I was unconscious of it at the time. I did not mean to do it."... The achievement of the book lies in Jack's fusion of his own suppressed nature with that of a beast... In Buck's bad dreams, Jack recorded his own childish fears of cold, deprivation, and solitude, as well as his compulsion always to be free and roving, on the hunt to gratify every desire... [Sinclair]~Macmillan was rightfully optimistic about this book, printing 71,584 copies as a first edition -- the most of any London title. This is not, therefore, a scarce book. However, due to the readily-flaking white pigment used on the pictorial trade binding, fine copies are few and far between. This is close to being such a copy: the white pigment is slightly rubbed but is more intact than usual, and there is a faint glass-ring on the rear cover. Loosely inserted is the front panel of the pictorial dust jacket (whatever white pigment did rub off the book's front cover, is still present on the verso of this jacket panel!). Sisson & Martens p. 14; Blanck 11876.

        THE LAND OF LITTLE RAIN

Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1903. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Inscribed by Author(s). Frontispiece, three halftone plates, and numerous border decorations by E. Boyd Smith. Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1903. Fourth impression. This paean to the high California desert consists of fourteen sketches based on personal observation following solitary sojourns tramping through desert trails and "the streets of the mountains." Mary Austin (1868-1934), naturalist, feminist, mystic, and poet, wrote thirty-five books and hundreds of articles during her lifetime, but The Land of Little Rain, her first book, is regarded as her masterpiece. Her nature writings have been compared to those of John Muir, John Burroughs, and Henry David Thoreau. Living in the little town of Independence, Inyo County, she, more than anyone, succeeded in conveying the beauty of this simultaneously forbidding yet magnetic landscape with its hardy mixture of plants, animals, and human beings. Lawrence Clark Powell summed up the beauty of her words, writing: "With her feet on earth and her head in the sky, she gave voice in singing prose to the soul of a hitherto unsung land." Through her carefully crafted essays, she conveyed to her readers the feel of the soil, the inherent beauty of the desert flora, the graceful movements of the rattlesnake, and the pleasant aromas emanating from a Native American cooking bowl. Importantly, Austin painted a word picture of an Owens Valley that would soon be changed forever when a thirsty Los Angeles siphoned off the life-giving water from this "land of little rain." This copy is inscribed by Austin to the distinguished California historian, mountaineer, and environmentalist Francis P. Farquhar (1887-1974) on the half-title. Octavo. Original olive green cloth binding, with pictorial light green, dark green, gilt, and black stamping. The hinges are tender. The spine is darkened just a touch, with a bit of wear to the corners and tips, and a light scratch to the rear panel; otherwise very good. The Zamorano Eighty, #2..

        Aaron Siskind Photographs

Introduction by Harold Rosenberg. Folio. Black cloth with silver stamping, pictorial dust jacket. (Ca. 150pp). Numerous illustrations. Very good/good plus. Jacket edgeworn and a bit rubbed, with several archivally closed (on verso) edge tears and one wide chip running along the bottom edge of the front panel (triangular, 8½" wide X 1¼" at left side narrowing to ¼" at right side) -- fairly attractive overall despite obvious flaws. A tight, nice first edition of this scarce first photo collection by the reknowned New York and Chicago photographer (1903-91), who pioneered abstract expressionism in photography. Though not so noted, from the collection of noted Midwest photographer Archie Lieberman (1926-2008), author of "Farm Boy." A handsome copy of this desireable title.

Stuttgart.: Julius Hoffman.. No date. Ca. 1903.. 13 ONLY (of 24) color lithograph plates, sheets 18 x 13 inches, cloth covered thin boards (hardbound). Covers moderately soiled; the plates are in excellent condition with light spots to a few outer margins. AS IS. This is a gathering of 13 of the plates from the collection Form & Farbe im Flachenschmuck, originally published in a portfolio but here bound into a serviceable cloth binding; paint marks on the cover suggest that it was actually used in an artist's studio. A paper label for the bookstore Ludvig Schuth of Kobenhavn has been glued over the what was likely the original publisher's name. Each plate features a number of stunning Art Nouveau wall covering designs by artists Rudolph Rochga and Paul Haustein. While the visual motif is overwhelmingly Art Nouveau, a number of the panels hint at the Deco stylistics to emerge in upcoming decades. .

        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

      O. O., 17. XI. 1903.. 1½ SS. auf Doppelblatt. Kl.-4to. Mit eh. adr. Kuvert..

        Funny Frolics

London: John F. Shaw & Co, Ltd,, [c. 1903]. Octavo. Original red cloth-backed drab card wrappers, front cover with chromolithograph and titles and border in black, title page printed in red and black and with illustration by Frank M. Williamson. Tipped-in chromolithographic frontispiece and 3 other colour images, illustrations in the text in black and white. Title inscribed in pencil to backstrip, wrappers lightly rubbed and with a few minor creases and nicks. An excellent copy. A scarce title in an even scarcer edition. OCLC records two copies published in 1903 by a different publisher, Ernest Nister, but shows no record of this particular imprint, nor do Horne and Peppin & Micklethwait. This edition was published at the peak of Wain's carreer, in the early twentieth century, when he was producing a staggering 600 drawings of his famous anthropomorphic cats a year, a feat which eventually drove him to madness.

"Marienlyst". Park mit ansteigendem Weg, der auf eine klassizistische Villa zuführt.

. Aquarell und Bleistift, auf chamoisfarbenem Velin, links unten bezeichnet und datiert "Marienlyst. 9. Sept. 1903.". 34,7:24,7 cm.

AMERICAN BOOKBINDINGS IN THE LIBRARY OF HENRY WILLIAM POOR ... ILLUSTRATED IN GOLD-LEAF AND COLORS BY EDWARD BIERSTADT

Jamaica, NY: Printed at the Marion Press / Published by George D. Smith, 1903.. 77pp. Ribbed cloth, stamped in gilt. Frontis and thirty-eight color plates. Cloth lightly rubbed at corners and lightly handsoiled, some inevitable offsetting from the color plates to the facing page (though minimized by the presence of tissue guards between opposed plates), but a very good copy. First edition. One of two hundred numbered copies on Dutch handmade paper, in addition to three copies on vellum and thirty-five on Japan vellum. A remarkable achievement in color printing for the time, reproducing with amazing depth and fidelity bindings by Smith, the Club Bindery, Bradstreet, Matthews, et al. The descriptive text suffers no restraint in singing the glories of Mr. Poor's bindings, though from today's vantage point, with one or two exceptions, the bindings themselves are thin soup compared to the effort involved in their reproduction here. A highpoint of the Marion Press's output. ROGERS 61.
