Handbuch der allgemeinen und lokalen Anaesthesie für Ärzte und Studierende.

. Berlin u. Wien, Urban & Schwarzenberg, 1903, 8°, VI, 234 pp., mit 116 Abb., original Leineneinband; mit dem Ex Libris "Dr. A. Bauer". Erste Auflage. F.L.Dumont, p.17-19 - "The standard textbook by Fritz Dumont, was published in 1903. It was excellently illustrated and gave a comprehensive survey of local anaestehsia for the first time... -cf. J.Schulte am Esch & M.Goerig: The Histroy of Anaesthesia, p.41 - "Dumont advocates reform in anesthetic education" -cf. Duncum, p.547

"New England regionalist writer, highly regarded for cameo like, naturalistic pictures of domestic life and for supernatural stories ... THE WIND IN THE ROSE-BUSH (1903), Freeman's only supernatural collection, is of greater critical and historical importance than its uniqueness might suggest. It is one of the very few bodies of work that combine domestic realism with supernaturalism, and it has been the founding document of a minor school within supernatural fiction (notably August Derleth and his followers). The individual stories are also excellent." - Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, p. 163. Barron (ed), Horror Literature 3-71.         Sydney Harbour Bridge Advisory Board. (Report on Designs and Tenders Submitted In Connection with the Proposed Bridge over Sydney Harbour .).

      - Sydney, Govt Printer 1903. Foolscap, stapled as issued; 67pp; with the portfolio of plates: 46 maps, plans, elevations, views, panoramas and photo illustrations (almost all folding, many colour and many rather large), loose as issued in the publisher's foolscap portfolio (with a new cloth spine). Rough around the edges, with spotting and browning of the outer pages of the report, some frayed edges of a few plans and a few splodges and flaws here and there but decent enough and all there. An archetypal example of Australian progress, this saga dragged on for years. The competition for a bridge was first called in 1900, a winner (Arrol) and runner-up (Norman Selfe) were announced whereupon the public service discarded both and began negotiations with the cheapest bidder. After protest the competition was relaunched but this time detailed specifications and conditions were issued. With no clear winner, three companies were invited to submit further designs and in the end Norman Selfe's rather Eiffelesque cantilever bridge was favoured. At this point there was a change in government and the whole endeavour petered out in a series of increasingly bitter skirmishes on the part of Selfe and inconclusive committees and commissions on the part of the government. This report remains the most concrete record of it. Of all the varied schemes for bridging the harbour, this report offering such a range of possible bridges most makes us look at our sacred landmark with questioning eyes. This report is rare of course but, surprisingly, the printed report is the harder bit to find. Over the last few dozen decades, or however long I've been in this business, I've tracked down three or four sets of the plates but the only copy of the report, before this, was in Norman Selfe's own bundle of papers.       1903. Potter, Beatrix. London: Frederick Warne and Co., 1903. Original maroon boards with cover pictorial onlay. First Trade Edition, first printing, of Beatrix Potter's second book. PETER RABBIT came out in 1901 (the trade edition in 1902); a privately-printed edition of THE TAILOR OF GLOUCESTER came out in 1902; next came the first (trade) edition of SQUIRREL NUTKIN in August 1903, followed by this trade edition of THE TAILOR OF GLOUCESTER in October.~This title had two printings dated 1903: the first (including this copy) has identical facing endpapers, whereas the second has mirror-image facing endpapers. This is a very good copy, externally quite attractive with just a little slanting of the spine; inside, some pages exhibit some thumbing from little fingers -- and the front paste-down and free endpaper are cracked at the gutter and have inscriptions messily erased (affecting the pie at the bottom of the open central area). Linder p. 423; Quinby 4.

        Typhoon, and Other Stories

London: William Heinemann 1903 - First edition, first printing. One of 1,500 copies. Publisher's dark gray cloth, with an illustration of a lifebuoy surrounding the title lettering to the front board in gilt, spine lettered in gilt. Very good plus, with some light wear and rubbing to the extremities, light rippling to the panels, lacking the terminal publisher's catalog, spine lightly cracked inside the rear cover, otherwise sturdy and intact binding, former owners' inscriptions to the front endpapers, minor toning to the free endpapers, otherwise bright and clean interior. Overall, a pleasing and attractive copy. Wise 13. Typhoon is a collection of four short stories: "Typhoon," "Amy Foster," "Falk: A Reminiscence," and "To-Morrow." Each of the stories has a nautical setting and draws inspiration from Conrad's tenure in various merchant navies; "Typhoon," tells the story of a ship captain's struggle against the powers of nature. Additionally, Conrad's experience of exile from Poland manifests itself in the themes of isolation and migration found throughout the text, especially in "Amy Foster" and "To-Morrow." "Amy Foster" tells the story of an emigrated Pole adjusting to her new life in England, and "To-morrow" tells of the homecoming of an aging sailor's long-lost son. Similarly, "Falk" is about a tug-boat master whose dark secret prevents him from properly courting the woman with whom he is in love. Interestingly, the eponymous story "Typhoon" was originally published in a separate edition in the United States in 1902, but there was no English equivalent until 1912, making this its first appearance in book-form in England.         The Church of England" [St. Paul's Cathedral]

[1903]. Original platinum print, mounted and framed behind glass. Some very minor oxidization to the edges of the print, a little conservation to one edge but a superb example. A vintage print in exceptionally large format, signed on the mount by the photographer, of St. Paul's Cathedral taken from the south bank of the Thames. Benington was part of the Pictorialist school and best known for his portraiture. His friend and associate Alvin Langdon Coburn made very similar images of London a few years after Benington and that later work must have been influenced by its forerunners. A rare and highly impressive photograph.

Original Dust Jacket Art: Conjuror's House by Stewart Edward White

(London): Hodder & Stoughton. (No date - 1903). First. Original dust jacket art. Image matted to approximately 11" x 15". Water color and grisaille. A bit of rubbing in the margins, very good or better. Unsigned. Image of a man holding a gun on another man with a horrified woman looking on. Subtitled "A Romance of the Free Forest," this adventure novel was the basis for two silent film versions, both entitled The Call of the North. The first, in 1914, was written and directed by Cecil B. DeMille and was the first film for which he received solo directorial credit. The second, in 1921, was directed by Joseph Henabery and starred Noah Beery and Jack Holt (whose granite-jawed visage was the basis for cartoonist Chester Gould's Dick Tracy). .

CURSE OF CENTRAL AFRICA with which is included “A Campaign Amongst Cannibals” by Edgar Canisius

London: R.A. Everett & Co, Ltd., 1903. First edition. Over 100 illustrations from photographs, one sketch map, one colour folding map. 8vo, original dark blue cloth, lettered in gilt on spine and upper cover, light blue and gilt image of a flag with a large single star on upper cover. xxviii, list of illustrations, 276, appendix, index,18 (publisher&#146;s list). A fine copy, bright and clean with only the minimum of aging or mellowing and with only a minor bit of foxing on the preliminary pages. RARE AND IMPORTANT. At the turn of the century, the Congo State in Africa was under the colonial rule of the Belgian monarch King Leopold II. In this orgiastic period of Western imperialism, every major power was scrambling for pieces of the newly-opened African continent and their careless footsteps tended to leave smaller forces crushed in their wake. <br> This book is an exposé written by the disgruntled Belgian ex district commissioner of the Aruwimi district of the Congo Free State bluntly describing the &#147;scandalous rule&#148; of the Belgian government in the Congo, complete with illustrations of natives submitting to Belgian torture and accounts of their excessive forced labour. One of the chapters is a section by former Congo State Service agent Edgar Canisius entitled &#147;A Campaign Among Cannibals&#148; in which (despite its formidable title) the author takes a sympathetic stand on the natives with further descriptions of their floggings and mistreatment at the hands of the Belgians. This interesting and detailed narrative brings the reader closer to imperialistic realities and injustices, devoid of much Euro-centric glossing. A fine and well-preserved copy of this important book.

1903 - An Awful Warning to Bad Babas. By the Author of "Little Black Mingo" and "Little Black Quibba." London: James Nisbet & Co., 1903. Original light olive cloth illustrated in black and printed in red. First Edition of the most unusual, and one of the least-known, of Helen Bannerman's eight small-format books for children. Five of the eight were about "black" children (though they were really about native Tamils in the region of southern India where Helen Bannerman lived) -- usually outwitting fierce animals that threatened them: LITTLE BLACK SAMBO (1899), LITTLE BLACK MINGO (1901), LITTLE BLACK QUIBBA (1902), LITTLE BLACK QUASHA (1908) and LITTLE BLACK BOBTAIL (1909). Her other three were this one, PAT AND THE SPIDER (1905) and THE TEASING MONKEY (1907).~LITTLE DEGCHIE-HEAD (a "degchie" is a large handle-less pot frequently used in Indian cuisine) is about a little (white) girl named Mary who despite warnings from her mother, cannot resist poking at fires; one day she falls into the fire and literally loses her head. Domingo the cook finds her headless body and manages to affix a deghie onto her shoulders as a temporary head (with his artwork for eyes nose and mouth) -- after which Mary hides her head in shame. But on Christmas Eve, Old Father Christmas comes to visit, sees that she needs a new head, and leaves a beautiful doll's head, which, in the morning, Mary successfully glues onto her neck -- after which Mary would never go near a fire any more. As in all of the Bannerman books, the color illustrations (many of which are strange to say the least) are opposite the text, with the reverse side of both leaves blank.~This is a near-fine copy, with scarcely any soil or wear (one light red dampmark on the fore-edge of the leaves).         An Ivory Trader in North Kenia. the record of an expedition through Kikuyu to Galla-Land in East Equatorial Africa. With an account of the Rendili and Burkeneji Tribes.

Longmans, Green and Co., London 1903 - Publisher's pictorial gilt stamped blue cloth, showing a native with a shield and spear in gilt. 8vo, xvi, 368. Complete with all illustrations and folding map. There is a small crack at the inner upper side of the endpapers of the backboard, but the joints are sound and strong and the binding is fine. Apparently this once was a library copy with a label on the lower spine and on the inside of the backboard. Both have been removed by a professional restorer. On the inner backboard it is only hardly visible, actually almost invisible, but the tail of the spine is a bit soiled. Absolutely no further markings indicating it possibly is an ex-lib copy indeed. Overall the binding is in a very good condition, with the gilt still bright on the front board, while the spine is a bit sun-faded. The contents are in an excellent condition; clean and free of any markings. The map too is in an excellent condition, with one very small tear in the inner margin and free of spotting.
