        The Call of the Wild

1903. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a jacketed first edition of perhaps the most iconic work of an archetypally American author and giant of early twentieth century literature.  Though Jack London had experienced some preceding success as a writer, it was The Call of the Wild, written in his mid-twenties, that brought him fame.  London's tale of a pampered California dog who finds his strength, his place, and the brutal gift of his freedom in a savage, primal North met with immediate popularity and critical acclaim.  The first printing quickly sold out and the story has since seen a host of successive editions, remaining continuously in print.  London's story occupies a pinnacle amid the remarkably prolific output of his short, strenuous, and celebrated literary life.  The story's hero, Buck, ranks among the most provocative and best known animal protagonists in literature.  To the virtues of the story itself, the first edition lends a striking aesthetic. The distinctive illustrated binding features vertically scored olive cloth with an iconic London dog sled scene in three panels on the front cover in red, white, and black, with gilt print on spine and front cover, and a color illustration of the lead sled dog from the front cover repeated on the spine.  Within, the book is profusely illustrated in color by Philip R. Goodwin and Charles Livingston Bull, bound with illustrated endpapers, and printed with generous margins (its thirty two thousand words, more novella-length than novel, nonetheless fill 231 pages).  The heavy gray paper dust jacket repeats the front cover illustrations and spine illustrations in dark green print.   This copy is very good plus in an original dust jacket.  The binding remains tight and bright with sharp corners.  Minor wear is primarily confined to extremities.  The typical abrasion loss of the white "snow" on the front cover and spine is modest.  We note a modest forward lean to the binding.  The contents remain bright and clean with a crisp feel.  We find no previous ownership marks or spotting.  The illustrated endpapers, frontispiece tissue guard, all illustrations, and the two-page Macmillan advertisement bound in at the rear are all intact.  The untrimmed fore edges and bottom edges remain exceptionally clean with only slight age-toning, and the top edge gilt is bright.  Searching for internal flaws, we note only faint finger smudges at the blank inner margin of page 15.  The illustrated dust jacket remains clean with clearly legible print and only perhaps a hint of barely discernible color shift to the spine.  The jacket has suffered no repair or reinforcement.  It bears unmistakable association with the first edition in the form of color ink from the front cover illustration that has transferred to the front panel verso of the dust jacket.  We note chip losses at the spine heel to a maximum .5 inch depth, a .25 inch deep strip loss at the spine head, modest loss to the corners, and fractional wear to the edges and front flap fold.  Losses to spine extremities do not impact either title or publisher print.  The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover.  References:  BAL 11876, Woodbridge 19

        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Leipzig, 8. VIII. 1903.. 2 SS. Gr.-4to. Auf Briefpapier des Hotel Palmbaum, Leipzig.. "Sehr geehrter Herr! - Mittig quer gefaltet.

SIXTEEN ILLUSTRATIONS OF SUBJECTS FROM KIPLING'S JUNGLE BOOK

DETMOLD, MAURICE AND EDWARD. (DETMOLD,MAURICE AND EDWARD)illus. SIXTEEN ILLUSTRATIONS OF SUBJECTS FROM KIPLING'S JUNGLE BOOK. London: Macmillan 1903. Elephant folio (16" x 22"). Containing 16 plates plus a 4 page list of illustrations and title page, all loose as issued in gilt pictorial cloth case. The gilt eagle design on the cover of the case was also by the Detmolds. The case has the usual wear and repair to the fold-over cloth flaps and joints and there are some neat mends to a few paper protectors and contents pages. Overall this is a better than Very Good, nice complete copy. It is not known how many of these portfolios were issued, but due to the high quality of the reproductions and the costs involved in printing and constructing the pictorial cases, the total number was undoubtedly very small. The portfolio is complete with 16 full color plates of varying size, each mounted on archival board measuring 15 1/2 x 21 1/2 inches and matted. Each plate has a protective paper sheet captioned with the title of the illustration. Done with the rich colors that typify the Detmolds' artwork, the reproductions found in the small book edition published five years later pale in comparison to these plates. Generally considered their finest work and arguably the finest book illustrations of all time. R. Dalby (Golden Age of Book Illus. p. 96) says "These paintings were praised for their realistic detail and decorative arrangement" and Diana Johnson (RISD: Fantastic Illustrations p. 61 ) says: "The end result of this incongruous joining together of the quasi-scientific and the ornamental is an image which is both fanciful and often rather disturbing." This was published when the Detmold twins were only twenty years old, and proved to be their last collaborative work before Maurice committed suicide in 1908. Because the illustrations almost look like original art when framed, that was the fate of most plates, so the set is rarely found complete.

RANCHING WITH LORDS AND COMMONS; OR TWENTY YEARS ON THE RANGE. BEING A RECORD OF ACTUAL FACTS AND CONDITIONS RELATING TO THE CATTLE INDUSTRY OF THE NORTHWEST TERRITORIES OF CANADA; AND COMPRISING THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF THE FORMATION AND CAREER OF A GREAT CATTLE COMPANY.

Toronto: William Briggs, [1903]. - First edition. 8vo. Pictorial cloth, 293 pp., preface, illustrated, plates, portraits. Six Score 25 says, "Craig was an American who became manager of the Oxley Ranch in the province of Alberta during the 1880s. The book recounts a classic example of absentee ownership [by the British lords and commons referred to in the title] and the subsequent mismanagement brought about by conflicts between Craig and the owners. This book and that by L.V. Kelly are the best two books on Canadian ranching. Craig was bitter about his experience and his narrative is one-sided. For the owner's side, see A. Staveley Hill's FROM HOME TO HOME." Former owner's inked name on front fly leaf, white ink on cover is unchipped but white ink on spine panel is moderately chipped. Overall in much better condition than most copies, and is a very good tight copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Stars of the Desert.

London: William Heinemann. New York: John Lane 1903 - 8vo, 214 x 138 mms., unnumbered, pp. [viii], 151 [152 text, with colophon reading "Printed by Ballantyne, Hanson, & Co. | London & Edinburgh," including half-title, uncut, many leaves unopened, errata slip pasted to lower margin of page 1, original grey boards with cream-coloured spine, with paper label (slightly soiled), and inscribed by author on recto of front free end-paper, "Aunt [?Lucy] | from Violet | Xmas 1903." Adela Florence Nicolson (18651904) published under the pseudonym Laurence Hope, though to friends and her husband she was "Violet." Stars of the Desert was Laurence Hope's second book of poetry, and was first published in 1903. It was the last book by Hope to appear before her death. The inscription is dated to December 1903, and she committed suicide about ten months later, in October 1904. Her third book, published as Indian Love in Britain and as Last Poems in the United States, appeared posthumously in 1905. Curiously, ODNB doesn't mention that Hope was known as "Violet" by her family and many friends. Inscribed copies of her works seem uncommon. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

New York: Macmillan Company. 1903. First. First edition. One corner a little bumped and the spine ends a little rubbed, else fine with the painted "snow" on the spine and front board (usually quiet worn) only very slightly rubbed, lacking the dustwrapper. One of the two great novels, along with White Fang, for which the author seems destined to be remembered.         Don Juan's Bouquet

New York: Edwin C. Hill, 1903. First edition. Superb Arts and Crafts binding by Curtis Walters, famed American binder who studied bookbinding with William Matthews, the Club Bindery and Stikeman. He was perhaps best known for his mosaic bindings, but also for inventing new ways to improve upon inlaid binding methods. This is a marvelous and intricate binding with lavish gilt floral patterning along with all-over stippled areas, inlaid petals and Nouveau-style stems and repeating leaf patterns. As well, the doublures are full-size light blue crushed morocco with darker impressed heart designs and ruling, blue silk mauve free endsheets. To round out this special book, This is Copy "One" of 500, is signed by the publisher E.C. Hill and the author has painted dozens of expertly crafted heads of women in hats and bows; bee, boat, etc. throughout in a style reminiscent of Harrison Fisher, and he has inscribed the following poem and presentation on the copyright page: "To H. A. Mertz (minor author)- These culled flowers I entrust to you, So keep them ever warm with sun and fresh with dew. So shall you have a fragrant booked Bouquet, Some quiet nook a sweetening alway. Lee Fairchild." Spine somewhat rubbed at margin, expertly repaired, internally near fine.

Untitled portrait of a woman by Marcus Stone

1903.. Color lithograph printed on silk, image 27 1/2 x 16 inches, sheet size approximately 30 x 17 1/2 inches, silk mounted on thick paper backing. Some faint soiling in outer margins, some fraying at very edge of sheet (well outside image area), a few small areas (chiefly in margins) where the silk is lifting from the backing, overall very good, bright condition. Currently conservation matted to 24 3/4 x 36 inches; FOR OVERSEAS SHIPPING WILL BE SENT ROLLED WITHOUT MAT. A gorgeous softly rendered image of a woman in a white dress clutching a flower, a blue sea and coastal landscape in the distance. Signed in print "Marcus Stone. 1903" at lower left. This is a fine example of Victorian printing on silk, enhancing, as the best examples did, color and texture; registration lines are visible in the print margin. British painter Marcus Stone (1840-1921) was elected to the Royal Academy in 1887. .
