        The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin

Chicago: The Lakeside Press, 1903. First thus . Very near fine in dark green cloth covered boards with gilt borders on the front board and gilt text on the spine with a minor dent to the upper end of the spine just over the "The" in the title giving it a bumpy texture. The gilt in the top bar of the letter "T" in that word is very slightly worn as are the letters "es" in "Lakeside" and the "e" in "Press" at the base of the spine. The gilt text is otherwise very bright and clean. There are no prior ownership markings of any kind within this copy. This is the first Lakeside Classic which was issued at Christmas time in 1903 and is quite uncommon. A highly collectible copy of a rather uncommon and seldom found title.

Hoepli 1903-1925, Milan - Three Volumes. Folio. Modern half green leatherette and marble boards. Collation: Vol. 1- xii, 1-393pp + portrait and 21 plates; Vol. 2- viii, 397-735 pp. + 21 plates; Vol. 3 - viii, 737-1257 pp. + 9 plates. The binding, text and plates are in very good condition. The sewing of the plates occasionally has a thread passing through a small hole in some of the plates. This does not affect viewing of the image. This work was originally issued in stiff paper boards and has been rebound. There was a fourth volume, Sovitti su orgamenti variee 1903-1925, that was published in 1929. The present set of volumes provides an extensive collection of Golgi's major works on neurons and numerous other cells as well as his research on malaria. Golgi introduced a selective silver stain that stained individual neuronal cells and a discrete reticulate structure inside cells, subsequently called the Golgi Apparatus. With his staining method, Golgi was able to study "of the finer anatomy of the nervous system. Using this technique, he identified Golgi's Type I and Type II nerve cells and did other detailed studies of the cerbrum, spinal cord, and olfactory system. Golgi later determined the correct course of the uriniferous tubules and their relation to the glomeruli of the kidney. In 1886, only a few years after Laveran's discovery of the malaria parasite, Golgi described the parasites of the tertian and quartan fevers and their nonsexual development. Together with Ramón y Cajal, Golgi was awarded the Nobel prize in 1906 for their many contributions into man's understanding of the structure and function of the nervous system." (Heirs of Hipporcrates, p. 611 no. 2056) .This is an exceptionally scarce publication of Golgi's research, much of which only appeared as journal articles, with only 350 copies printed.         THE DYNASTS (All 3 Volumes in Original Dust Jackets, EARLIEST ISSUE with integral 1903 Title Page in Volume One)

London: Macmillan, 1903. Hardy, Thomas. THE DYNASTS: A Drama of the Napoleonic Wars, In Three Parts, Nineteen Acts, & One Hundred and Thirty Scenes. London: Macmillan, 1903-1906-1908. Three volumes. First Edition in publisher's original green cloth. First issue of Volume One (1903 title page integral, only 103 copies at most printed, expert repair to front inner hinge), first British issue of Volume Two (title page a cancel as found in all British first editions; some 1905 titles were found among the American issue), First Issue of Volume Three. Very Good copies (a little worn at the edges) in Very Good examples of ALL THREE ORIGINAL DUST JACKETS (some light restoration to corners and spines). Very rare in the original dust jackets and as nice a set of the first issue as we've seen. Hardy's interest in The Napoleonic Wars was most famously expressed in his 1880 novel THE TRUMPET MAJOR but also found expression in his poetry and here in his Magnum Opus, THE DYNASTS, which took him several decades of hard work to bring to fruition. THE DYNASTS is little read today but contains the best and most complete insight into of Hardy's world-view (as hinted at in the last line of TESS OF THE D'URBERVILLES when he invokes The President Of The Immortals as having finished his sport with Tess). Bookplate of a distinguished previous owner on front paste-down all three volumes. Purdy pp. 119-135. . First Edition. Decorative Boards. Very Good/Very Good.

        ALLIED FORCES IN CHINA, 1901, 1902, 1903

[Np, 1903. Some fraying at edges, particularly lower left corner. Light wear and soiling. Very good. A unique, striking hand-embroidered silk flag commemorating the alliance that suppressed the Boxer Rebellion in China and honoring the Sherwood Foresters (Derbyshire) regiment of British infantry. The title, "Allied Forces in China," is embroidered in a large banner across the top, with the dates "1901, 1902, 1903" stitched across the bottom. The member nations of the alliance are represented by their flags. Arrayed to the left and right of a central Union Jack design are the flags of the United States, Italy, Germany, Russia, Japan, Austria-Hungary (a red and white variant flag with a crest), and France, as well as the flag of the Qing Dynasty (a variation, with a dragon on a white background, birds embroidered on the edges, and a red sun at top left). Centered at the top of the banner appears the insignia for the "Sherwood Foresters, Derbyshire," a crowned Maltese Cross with a white stag, the Union Jack of Britain, and the flags of the Red Ensign of the British Merchant Navy and the Royal Naval Ensign. Below the flags is a British battleship flying three U.K. flags. Each corner of the banner is embellished with a pink rose. The Boxer Rebellion was a proto-nationalist uprising in China between 1898 and 1901, in which elements in China revolted against foreign intervention and the imposition of Christianity and Western influence on the Qing government. The Imperial Court was deeply divided in its attitude toward the Boxer movement, and although the Dowager Empress eventually chose to side with the Boxers against the westerners, other parts of the Court allied with the foreign powers. The crisis came to a head when the Boxers attacked the European embassies in Beijing, leading to a fifty-five-day siege of the legation district in the summer of 1900. The swift response of the Eight Nation Alliance brought in twenty thousand armed troops, crushed the revolt, and captured Beijing. The Eight Nation Alliance then imposed severe reparations on the Chinese government as indemnity for the campaign. Allied troops remained in China for the next three years in a "peace-keeping" role. Stitching embroidered decorations of unit service was a tradition in the British Navy, and such pieces are traditionally known as "woolies." Similar items can be found in the Royal National Maritime Museum at Greenwich, generally woolwork or embroidered pictures with similar design elements of flags and ships, but nothing quite like this flag relating to China and the Boxer Rebellion. It is most unusual for being on silk, for commemorating an international expedition rather than unit service alone, and for relating to China. Only a part of the Sherwood Foresters regiment served in China, since most of the regiment was engaged in the Boer War, making this an unusual service designation as well. A beautiful and possibly unique flag relating to a major event in Chinese history.

2 pp. of a bifolium. Octavo. Dresden, February 3, 1903. In black ink on stationery with watermark "Extra Superfine." In German (with translation). Draeseke thanks the musicologist Hans Volkmann belatedly for sending him a copy of his new book on the composer Robert Volkmann (1815-1883): "... I learned of your address [only] yesterday through my old friend, Geheimer Hofrat Stern. Perhaps it will be of interest to you that, while living in Lausanne, I have energetically championed [Robert Volkmann's Piano] trio in B-flat minor... [I wish] your book, devoted to the memory of such an excellent musician, the widest possible dissemination..." Slightly creased at upper edge. Together with: Vintage postcard bust-length photograph, ca. 136 x 87 mm. With reproduction signature to lower margin. Edges slightly worn and silvered; verso lightly browned with some biographical annotations in pencil. . "Early in his career Draeseke was among the most original of the composers associated with the New German school of Wagner and Liszt, but by the time of this essay [Die Konfusion in der Musik, 1906] he had become more conservative in style. He developed a distinct approach to harmony, and an idiosyncratic handling of voice leading..." Alan H. Krueck in Grove online Robert Volkmann's Piano Trio in B-flat minor, op. 5 (1850), mentioned in the letter "was championed by Liszt, to whom it was dedicated, and admired by Bülow and Wagner." Thomas M. Brawley in Grove online Hans Volkmann's monograph on his great uncle Robert is considered to be one of his most significant works. Adolf Stern (1835-1907) was a poet and literary historian.

[Photographs]: New Jersey Infrastructure and Transportation Reference Photos

New Jersey. [1930s]. A collection of 217 photographs from PSEG (Public Service Enterprise Group) printed in the 1930s measuring between 5" x 7" to 8" x 10", most with captions. All photos about near fine with some original envelopes and negatives. PSEG was formed in 1903 after the merger of numerous smaller energy companies and firms throughout New Jersey. These prints, created in the 1930s, are taken from a variety of sources from the early days of the company and its sister companies starting in the late-1800s to promote the new face of the New Jersey power company. They show towns and companies throughout New Jersey, some after natural disasters, roads, buildings, public transportation, and company baseball games. Companies shown are the Newark Gaslight Company founded in 1845, United Electric Company of New Jersey, and Citizens Gaslight Company founded in 1870, these and numerous other branches of small New Jersey area power companies combined to form what is now PSEG. One photo of a group of men taking the field in baseball uniforms is captioned, "first field day meet of the P.S. Railway May 20, 1913 - Hilton Oval." Another photos shows downed power lines and reads, "Elizabeth - E. Grand St. and Jefferson Ave. Pole line result of storm March 1, 1914." The same storm is captured in a photo from Plainfield showing "P.S.E. wires in good shape," while "Western Union Line down." A photo depicting a horse drawn car that reads "Belleville & Cemetery" on the side is captioned, "driver - Mr. James J. Noonan 1884 - Jimie had more claim to fame than merely as chauffeur of the deluxe equipage he was the backstop for the old Woodstock's baseball team and a hero to all the kids of the Woodside section and Belleville." An extensive collection of photographs depicting the first few decades of the 20th Century in New Jersey and the early days of PSEG. .

ADVENTURES OF GERARD (Fine, Square Copy of the First Edition)

London: Newnes, 1903. Doyle, A(rthur) Conan. ADVENTURES OF GERARD. London: Newnes, [1903]. Illustrations by W. B. Wollen. FIRST EDITION. A Fine, square copy with only the most minimal wear, really as nice as it gets. In original publisher's cloth decorated in gilt. Small blind-stamp of W. H. Smith & Son, London on front free endpaper. Doyle had bigger and better heroes, of course, but none so comical and hilariously portrayed as is vain, egotistical Etienne Gerard, a French brigadier serving during the Napoleonic Wars. He thinks he's the best soldier and lover that ever lived and all his deeds are efforts to prove it. As with the Sherlock Holmes stories, Brigadier Gerard first appeared in the Strand Magazine in stories published between 1900-1903. THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES was produced just one year before in a similar size and format. Surprisingly scarce in collector's condition and a worthy addition to a Conan Doyle collection.. First Edition. Decorative Cloth. Fine. Illus. by W. B. Wollen.

Freiburg im Breisgau: Herdersche Verlagshandlung, 1903. First edition. Hardcover. g- to vg. Folio. XIX, [1], 596 (Text volume), 1 leaf (Title), 267 leaves (Plates). Original 3/4 brown cloth over golden cloth covered boards, with black lettering to spines and front covers. Exhaustive and authoritative study of the early Christian frescoes of Rome's catacombs with a complete set of striking photographic reproductions. This monumental work is divided into two volumes, of which the first contains the text illustrated by 54 in-text figs; the second is made up entirely of plates to the number of 267 (more than one-third being published for the first time), of which 132 are in color. The subject is divided into two categories, and the text is therefore arranged in two parts. The first part gives us the necessary details and information in regard to the paintings; the second treats of the content of the pictures. In the second volume, the author has placed the plates in a chronological order, thus helping to understand more clearly the gradual development of early Christian art. The splendid 132 chromolitographic plates have been realized by Danesi, Rome. Some rubbing along edges of binding. Front joint of second volume (Plates) reinforced by a yellow binder's tape. Ex-Library copy, with sticker at tail of spines, bookplate on inside of each front board, and pocket on inside of back covers. Upper margin of plate 82 partly stuck to the verso of plate 81. Minor foxing to very first and very last leaves of text volume. Text in German. Binding in overall fair to good-, interior in good+ to very good, plates in very good condition.

William Briggs, [1903]. - First edition. 8vo. Inked presentation inscription to Canadian Pacific Railway magnate Sir William "Billy" Van Horne "To Sir B. Van Horne with the compliments of the author. John R. Craig, Montreal, November 19th 1903." Pictorial cloth, vii [blank], 293 pp., preface, illustrated, plates, portraits, frontispiece. Six Score 25 says, "Craig was an American who became manager of the Oxley Ranch in the province of Alberta during the 1880s. The book recounts a classic example of absentee ownership [by the British lords and commons referred to in the title] and the subsequent mismanagement brought about by conflicts between Craig and the owners. This book and that by L.V. Kelly are the best two books on Canadian ranching. Craig was bitter about his experience and his narrative is one-sided. For the owner's side, see A. Staveley Hill's FROM HOME TO HOME." From the library of William "Billy" Van Horne, former President of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Van Horne was active in southern Alberta, completing the transcontinental railway and overseeing the construction of the Chateau Lake Louise in Alberta. Van Horne spent his later years in Montreal (where this book was inscribed), serving as a governor of McGill University from 1895 until his death. A wonderful association copy, inscribed to Van Horne in the year of publication, of an already scarce and important book on Canadian ranching. Top edges and fore-margins of most pages have a light, old water stain, cloth lightly rubbed, repair to cloth along the foot of spine, black & white coloring on the front cover is bright, as is spine panel, else an overall very good copy.         Denkwürdigkeiten eines Nervenkranken nebst Nachträgen und Anhang: unter welchen Voraussetzungen darf eine für geisteskrank erachtete Person gegen ihren Willen in einer Heilanstalt festgehalten werden,

Leipzig Mutze, 1903 - extrem selten! Illustration on Cloth of a Woman Hunting with a Shotgun and Dogs

[No place: no publisher]. 1903. Large vintage illustration on cloth, possibly silk, of a woman in trousers, gaiters, and a western style hat, holding a shotgun at the ready, with a game bag slung across her shoulder. Approximately 20" x 22". Upper left corner has what might be some modest discoloration, or might be part of the design of the outline of the clouds in the background, else near fine. Copyright date of 1903 in lower left corner. We have been unable to track this image and are unsure to what use it was put, either as a decorative wall-hanging or as an advertisement, possibly for a gun or ammunition manufacturer. A highly unusual and a relatively early image of a lone woman with a gun in a recreational context. Currently housed in a cheap and not particularly well-fitting frame as we received it, we would recommend shipping it without the frame. .
