John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1903 - 1903 Original Hardback Wisden. Very Good Condition.

1903. Hi, Here we have a very rare 1903 Original Hardback Wisden, in Very Good Condition. The 8th Wisden Hardback. As per all 1903s the hinges were broken, Wisden forgot the strengtheners and hence why you never see one with original hinges or just with broken ones, but I have had them proffesionally restored and you can hardly tell, otherwise a super book. The lettering (gilt) is bright and strong to the front and to the spine. The front board is in excllent condition. The spine cloth has the odd mark and at an angle the rear board has a splattering of marks but not obvious unless you look under light. The pastedowns are bright and yellow, and the pages very clean, some spotting around the photoplate tissue which is in very good condition. 1903 is a rare Wisden. Please see the large photographs. More photographs available on request.

The Durbar [of 1903]. [With special descriptions of The Press Camp - The Rajputana Camp - The Punjab Camp - The Baroda Camp - The Sikkim Camp - The Central India Camp - The Bombay and Imperial Cadet Camp - The S.S.Arabia etc.].

London: Adam and Charles Black. No.14 of the Deluxe Edition. Signed by Mortimer Menpes. The first layer with the Frontispiece cleanly detached, otherwise in very good condition with only minor signs of external wear.. London, Adam and Charles Black, 1903. Quarto. XII, 210 pages. With 100 fine coloured plates, including frontispiece (all illustrations including their original tissue guards). Hardcover / Beautiful original ivory buckram with ornaments to front board and spine. No.14 of the Deluxe Edition. Signed by Mortimer Menpes. The first layer with the Frontispiece cleanly detached, otherwise in very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. The Durbar of 1903 was held to celebrate the succession of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra as Emperor and Empress of India. The two full weeks of festivities were devised in meticulous detail by Lord Curzon. It was a dazzling display of pomp, power and split second timing. Neither the earlier Delhi Durbar of 1877, nor the later Durbar held there in 1911, could match the pageantry of Lord Curzon?'s 1903 festivities. In a few short months at the end of 1902, a deserted plain was transformed into an elaborate tented city, complete with temporary light railway to bring crowds of spectators out from Delhi, a post office with its own stamp, telephone and telegraphic facilities, a variety of stores, a Police force with specially designed uniform, hospital, magistrate?'s court and complex sanitation, drainage and electric light installations. Souvenir guide books were sold and maps of the camping ground distributed. Marketing opportunities were craftily exploited. Special medals were struck, firework displays, exhibitions and glamorous dances held. Edward VII, to Curzon?'s disappointment, did not attend but sent his brother, the Duke of Connaught who arrived with a mass of dignitaries by train from Bombay just as Curzon and his government came in the other direction from Calcutta. The assembly awaiting them displayed possibly the greatest collection of jewels to be seen in one place. Each of the Indian princes was adorned with the most spectacular of his gems from the collections of centuries. Maharajahs came with great retinues from all over India, many of them meeting for the first time while the massed ranks of the Indian armies, under their Commander-in-Chief Lord Kitchener, paraded, played their bands and restrained the crowds of common people. On the first day, the Curzons entered the area of festivities, together with the maharajahs, riding on elephants, some with huge gold candelabras stuck on their tusks. The durbar ceremony itself fell on New Year's Day and was followed by days of polo and other sports, dinners, balls, military reviews, bands, and exhibitions. The world?'s press dispatched their best journalists, artists and photographers to cover proceedings. The popularity of movie footage of the event, shown in makeshift cinemas throughout India, is often credited with having launched the country?'s early film industry. The India Post issued a set of two commemorative souvenir sheets with special cancellation struck on 1 January 1903 - 12 noon, a much sought after item for the stamp collectors today. The event culminated in a grand coronation ball attended only by the highest ranking guests, all reigned over by Lord Curzon and more so by the stunning Lady Curzon in her glittering jewels and regal peacock gown. (Wikipedia) Mortimer Luddington Menpes (22 February 1855 ?- 1 April 1938), was an Australian-born artist, author, printmaker and illustrator. Menpes was born in Port Adelaide, South Australia, the second son of property developer James Menpes, who with his wife Ann arrived in South Australia from London on the Moffatt in December 1839. Educated at Adelaide Educational Institution, he attended classes at Adelaide's School of Design, and did some excellent work as a photo-colourist, but his formal art training began at the School of Art in London in 1878, after his family had moved back to England in 1875. Edward Poynter was a fellow student at the school. Menpes first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1880, and, over the following 20 years, 35 of his paintings and etchings were shown at the Academy. Menpes set off on a sketching tour of Brittany in 1880, during which he met James McNeill Whistler. He became Whistler's pupil, and at one stage shared a flat with him at Cheyne Walk on the Chelsea Embankment in London. He was taught etching by Whistler, whose influence, together with that of Japanese design, is evident in his later work. Menpes became a major figure in the etching revival, producing more than seven hundred different etchings and drypoints, which he usually printed himself. As early as 1880, a selection of ten of his drypoint portraits, donated to the British Museum by Charles A. Howell, brought him critical acclaim. A visit to Japan in 1887 led to his first one-man exhibition at Dowdeswell's Gallery in London. Menpes moved into a property at 25 Cadogan Gardens, Sloane Square, designed for him by A. H. Mackmurdo in 1888 and decorated it in the Japanese style. Whistler and Menpes quarrelled in 1888 over the interior design of the house, which Whistler felt was a brazen copying of his own ideas. The house was sold in 1900, and Menpes moved to Kent. In 1900, after the outbreak of the Boer War, Menpes was sent to South Africa as a war artist for the weekly illustrated magazine Black and White. After the end of the war in 1902 he travelled widely, visiting Burma, Egypt, France, India, Italy, Japan, Kashmir, Mexico, Morocco, and Spain. Many of his illustrations were published in travel books by A & C Black. His book on the Delhi Durbar was an illustrated record of the commemoration in Delhi of the coronation of King Edward VII. For the last 30 years of his life, Menpes retired to Iris Court, Pangbourne from where he managed his Purley-on-Thames business, "Menpes Fruit Farms". He built forty large greenhouses in which to grow carnations and eight cottages to accommodate the farm workers. He died in Pangbourne in 1938. Menpes became a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers (RE) in 1881, Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) in 1885, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours (RI) in 1897 and Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI) in 1899. An exhibition of his work, The World of Mortimer Menpes: Painter, Etcher, Raconteur opened at the Art Gallery of South Australia on 14 June 2014. Menpes, his parents and three of his siblings moved to England in 1875, never to return to Australia. However five of Menpes' sisters remained in South Australia. In 1875, Menpes married fellow Australian Rosa Mary Grosse (d. 23 August 1936) in London. They had a son, Mortimer James (b. 1879) and two daughters, Rose Maud Goodwin and Dorothy Whistler. Menpes painted in both oil and watercolour. He developed a special form of colour etching, used to illustrate his books, and founded the Menpes Press of London and Watford. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Menpes travelled Europe, making copies of paintings by the old masters which he used as a basis for a series of prints published in 1905 and 1909. In 1911, Menpes donated 38 of the copies in oil to the Australian Government; these works have subsequently become part of the Pictures Collection at the National Library of Australia. Some pencil sketches by Menpes were published in the Adelaide Observer in 1903. They are portraits of Sir Charles Todd, Sir James Fergusson and the Rev. Canon Green; Dean Marryat, Sir Anthony Musgrave and Dr. Schomburgk; Charles Mann, Sir Arthur Blyth and William Townsend Sir William Milne, Thomas Playford and George Stevenson, Jun. (Wikipedia)

Famous photograph of the First Man-Flight, signed by Orville Wright

n.p., n.d.. 6.25" x 4.5". "Signed photographic halftone print of, ""First Man-Flight, December 17, 1903, Kitty Hawk, N.C."", Signed, ""Orville Wright,"" in center of bottom of image in ink, 6.25"" x 4.5"", image size 5"" x 3.5"". Mounting remnants on verso, Very Good condition. This photograph depicts the famous first flight, and is signed by Orville Wright, the world?s first airplane pilot. Orville set up the photograph by placing a tripod at the location where the plane was to take off, and John T. Daniels, one of the few witnesses to the event, snapped the shutter during the 12 seconds that the first heavier-than-air vehicle flew its 120 feet. Orville documented the event in his diary: ?After running the engine and propellers a few minutes to get them in working order, I got on the machine at 10:35 for the first trial ... On slipping the rope the machine started off increasing in speed to probably 7 or 8 miles. The machine lifted from the truck just as it was entering on the fourth rail. Mr. Daniels took a picture just as it left the tracks.? Three more flights were made that day with Orville?s brother Wilbur piloting the record flight lasting 59 seconds over a distance of 852 feet. This halftone photograph may have been printed by the Wrights themselves, being familiar with the halftone process from their earlier newspaper publishing enterprises, the weekly West Side News and the daily Evening Item."

        The Kingis Quair.

Vale Press, London 1903 - Edited by Robert Steele. Printed in red and black in a special font designed by Charles Ricketts, 'The King's Fount'. One of 260 copies. 8vo., a really fresh and crisp copy in the original quarter linen with blue paper covered boards, printed paper label on upper cover. Very slight speckling to endpapers and edges as usual, otherwise a very good untrimmed copy. A more elaborate illustrated edition had been planned but it was abandoned in favour or the rather charming simplicity of this version in Rickett's extraordinary typeface. The three planned illustrations appeared later in 'The Dial' (no.4 & 5). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin

Chicago: The Lakeside Press, 1903. First thus . Very near fine in dark green cloth covered boards with gilt borders on the front board and gilt text on the spine with a minor dent to the upper end of the spine just over the "The" in the title giving it a bumpy texture. The gilt in the top bar of the letter "T" in that word is very slightly worn as are the letters "es" in "Lakeside" and the "e" in "Press" at the base of the spine. The gilt text is otherwise very bright and clean. There are no prior ownership markings of any kind within this copy. This is the first Lakeside Classic which was issued at Christmas time in 1903 and is quite uncommon. A highly collectible copy of a rather uncommon and seldom found title.

Hoepli 1903-1925, Milan - Three Volumes. Folio. Modern half green leatherette and marble boards. Collation: Vol. 1- xii, 1-393pp + portrait and 21 plates; Vol. 2- viii, 397-735 pp. + 21 plates; Vol. 3 - viii, 737-1257 pp. + 9 plates. The binding, text and plates are in very good condition. The sewing of the plates occasionally has a thread passing through a small hole in some of the plates. This does not affect viewing of the image. This work was originally issued in stiff paper boards and has been rebound. There was a fourth volume, Sovitti su orgamenti variee 1903-1925, that was published in 1929. The present set of volumes provides an extensive collection of Golgi's major works on neurons and numerous other cells as well as his research on malaria. Golgi introduced a selective silver stain that stained individual neuronal cells and a discrete reticulate structure inside cells, subsequently called the Golgi Apparatus. With his staining method, Golgi was able to study "of the finer anatomy of the nervous system. Using this technique, he identified Golgi's Type I and Type II nerve cells and did other detailed studies of the cerbrum, spinal cord, and olfactory system. Golgi later determined the correct course of the uriniferous tubules and their relation to the glomeruli of the kidney. In 1886, only a few years after Laveran's discovery of the malaria parasite, Golgi described the parasites of the tertian and quartan fevers and their nonsexual development. Together with Ramón y Cajal, Golgi was awarded the Nobel prize in 1906 for their many contributions into man's understanding of the structure and function of the nervous system." (Heirs of Hipporcrates, p. 611 no. 2056) .This is an exceptionally scarce publication of Golgi's research, much of which only appeared as journal articles, with only 350 copies printed.         THE DYNASTS (All 3 Volumes in Original Dust Jackets, EARLIEST ISSUE with integral 1903 Title Page in Volume One)

London: Macmillan, 1903. Hardy, Thomas. THE DYNASTS: A Drama of the Napoleonic Wars, In Three Parts, Nineteen Acts, & One Hundred and Thirty Scenes. London: Macmillan, 1903-1906-1908. Three volumes. First Edition in publisher's original green cloth. First issue of Volume One (1903 title page integral, only 103 copies at most printed, expert repair to front inner hinge), first British issue of Volume Two (title page a cancel as found in all British first editions; some 1905 titles were found among the American issue), First Issue of Volume Three. Very Good copies (a little worn at the edges) in Very Good examples of ALL THREE ORIGINAL DUST JACKETS (some light restoration to corners and spines). Very rare in the original dust jackets and as nice a set of the first issue as we've seen. Hardy's interest in The Napoleonic Wars was most famously expressed in his 1880 novel THE TRUMPET MAJOR but also found expression in his poetry and here in his Magnum Opus, THE DYNASTS, which took him several decades of hard work to bring to fruition. THE DYNASTS is little read today but contains the best and most complete insight into of Hardy's world-view (as hinted at in the last line of TESS OF THE D'URBERVILLES when he invokes The President Of The Immortals as having finished his sport with Tess). Bookplate of a distinguished previous owner on front paste-down all three volumes. Purdy pp. 119-135. . First Edition. Decorative Boards. Very Good/Very Good.

        ALLIED FORCES IN CHINA, 1901, 1902, 1903

[Np, 1903. Some fraying at edges, particularly lower left corner. Light wear and soiling. Very good. A unique, striking hand-embroidered silk flag commemorating the alliance that suppressed the Boxer Rebellion in China and honoring the Sherwood Foresters (Derbyshire) regiment of British infantry. The title, "Allied Forces in China," is embroidered in a large banner across the top, with the dates "1901, 1902, 1903" stitched across the bottom. The member nations of the alliance are represented by their flags. Arrayed to the left and right of a central Union Jack design are the flags of the United States, Italy, Germany, Russia, Japan, Austria-Hungary (a red and white variant flag with a crest), and France, as well as the flag of the Qing Dynasty (a variation, with a dragon on a white background, birds embroidered on the edges, and a red sun at top left). Centered at the top of the banner appears the insignia for the "Sherwood Foresters, Derbyshire," a crowned Maltese Cross with a white stag, the Union Jack of Britain, and the flags of the Red Ensign of the British Merchant Navy and the Royal Naval Ensign. Below the flags is a British battleship flying three U.K. flags. Each corner of the banner is embellished with a pink rose. The Boxer Rebellion was a proto-nationalist uprising in China between 1898 and 1901, in which elements in China revolted against foreign intervention and the imposition of Christianity and Western influence on the Qing government. The Imperial Court was deeply divided in its attitude toward the Boxer movement, and although the Dowager Empress eventually chose to side with the Boxers against the westerners, other parts of the Court allied with the foreign powers. The crisis came to a head when the Boxers attacked the European embassies in Beijing, leading to a fifty-five-day siege of the legation district in the summer of 1900. The swift response of the Eight Nation Alliance brought in twenty thousand armed troops, crushed the revolt, and captured Beijing. The Eight Nation Alliance then imposed severe reparations on the Chinese government as indemnity for the campaign. Allied troops remained in China for the next three years in a "peace-keeping" role. Stitching embroidered decorations of unit service was a tradition in the British Navy, and such pieces are traditionally known as "woolies." Similar items can be found in the Royal National Maritime Museum at Greenwich, generally woolwork or embroidered pictures with similar design elements of flags and ships, but nothing quite like this flag relating to China and the Boxer Rebellion. It is most unusual for being on silk, for commemorating an international expedition rather than unit service alone, and for relating to China. Only a part of the Sherwood Foresters regiment served in China, since most of the regiment was engaged in the Boer War, making this an unusual service designation as well. A beautiful and possibly unique flag relating to a major event in Chinese history.

I learned of your address [only] yesterday through my old friend, Geheimer Hofrat Stern. Together with: Vintage postcard bust-length photograph, ca. 136 x 87 mm. With reproduction signature to lower margin. Edges slightly worn and silvered; verso lightly browned with some biographical annotations in pencil. . He developed a distinct approach to harmony, and an idiosyncratic handling of voice leading..." Alan H. THE WIND IN THE ROSE-BUSH (1903), Freeman's only supernatural collection, is of greater critical and historical importance than its uniqueness might suggest. It is one of the very few bodies of work that combine domestic realism with supernaturalism, and it has been the founding document of a minor school within supernatural fiction (notably August Derleth and his followers). The individual stories are also excellent." - Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, p. 163. Barron (ed), Horror Literature 3-71.         [Photographs]: New Jersey Infrastructure and Transportation Reference Photos

New Jersey. [1930s]. A collection of 217 photographs from PSEG (Public Service Enterprise Group) printed in the 1930s measuring between 5" x 7" to 8" x 10", most with captions. All photos about near fine with some original envelopes and negatives. PSEG was formed in 1903 after the merger of numerous smaller energy companies and firms throughout New Jersey. These prints, created in the 1930s, are taken from a variety of sources from the early days of the company and its sister companies starting in the late-1800s to promote the new face of the New Jersey power company. They show towns and companies throughout New Jersey, some after natural disasters, roads, buildings, public transportation, and company baseball games. Companies shown are the Newark Gaslight Company founded in 1845, United Electric Company of New Jersey, and Citizens Gaslight Company founded in 1870, these and numerous other branches of small New Jersey area power companies combined to form what is now PSEG. One photo of a group of men taking the field in baseball uniforms is captioned, "first field day meet of the P.S. Railway May 20, 1913 - Hilton Oval." Another photos shows downed power lines and reads, "Elizabeth - E. Grand St. and Jefferson Ave. Pole line result of storm March 1, 1914." The same storm is captured in a photo from Plainfield showing "P.S.E. wires in good shape," while "Western Union Line down." A photo depicting a horse drawn car that reads "Belleville & Cemetery" on the side is captioned, "driver - Mr. James J. Noonan 1884 - Jimie had more claim to fame than merely as chauffeur of the deluxe equipage he was the backstop for the old Woodstock's baseball team and a hero to all the kids of the Woodside section and Belleville." An extensive collection of photographs depicting the first few decades of the 20th Century in New Jersey and the early days of PSEG. .
