        The Nebuly Coat

London Edward Arnold 1903. 8vo. 372pp. + 16pp ads. Publisher's oatmeal clotht titled and decorated in black and silver gilt to spine and front board. Minor wear and bumping to spine ends, light shelfwear and some soiling of the cloth. Gilt bright, a strong, handsome copy. Internally clean, minor spotting to the prelims and perhaps some toning of the untrimmed edges. A scarce book, one whose very design usually ensures that it looks like it's been dragged across a battlefield. This is a pretty solid and attractive copy, definitely one of the nice ones I've seen. Falkner's third and final novel, for a man who wrote so beautifully his output was unfortunately limited to three novels and a book of poems and four ephemeral topographical guides. Often overshadowed by the overtl sinister and ghostly "The Lost Stradivarius" and the undeniably awesome rip roaring adventure of "Moonfleet", "The Nebuly Coat" is a mysterious little tale concerning a young architect restoring a cathedral (an interest close to Falkner's heart), and the arrival of a mysterious heir to the local county seat who is not what he seems. All Falkner's novels are hard to lay hands on; this is a particularly handsome example.

        La légende de Soeur Béatrix.

Paris: Librairie A. Rouquette 4to (25 cm, 9.84"). [2] ff., 67, [1] pp.; [68] ff.. 1903 Beautiful and scarce. This is signed => no. 1 of an edition of 150 on Japan paper (there were also 10 on "papier vélin" re-imposed in 4s) color printed and with watercoloring after the original by Henri Caruchet, the coloring executed under his direction by artists at the atelier of A. Charpentier et Fils. The title-page is printed in red and black, with Soeur Béatrix's face in a central medallion of blue, grey, and white. This volume for connoisseurs offers two distinct parts: first, the text printed and all the illustrations present as fully colored, delicately washed in shades of pink, blue, purple, grey, white, and earth tones; and second, a set of the illustrations in proofs uncolored and without text. Most of the illustrations in both suites are => initialed by Caruchet. Jean Emmanuel Charles Nodier (1780?-1844) was a French author and librarian, appointed to the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal in 1824. His literary style => much influenced the Romantics, including Victor Hugo and Alfred de Musset. This legend, first published in La Revue de Paris (1838), is representative of his fantastical oeuvre. It was later adapted into a French opera (Béatrice, 1914) and a film (1923). Signed Binding: Crushed half milk chocolate morocco over marbled paper boards signed "V. Champs," gilt author, title, and date to spine; patterned marbled endpapers (different from the covers). Original gilt and hand-colored stiff cream wrappers bound in, showing Béatrix full-figure on the front, her hands extended outward beneath the gilt title. Provenance: An initialed ink inscription beneath the Justification du tirage states this copy was "Offert à Madame Conquet" — who must have been related to => M.L. Conquet, "the great Paris publisher of works of the romantic school," whose publications were famous for being very limited editions and for the "high artistic quality of their illustrations" ("Books and Authors," The New York Times, 26 March 1898). Binding as above. One small nick on the front leather near the spine, and board extremities (paper and leather) lightly rubbed. The publisher's embossed authentication stamp below the limitation statement. Text clean, unblemished. => Simply, excellent.

        [Christ Trampling on Satan]

[London, 1903. Engraving, by Thomas Butts, after Blake. Laid paper. First and only state. Hand written in ink, upper right corner "Cent quatre vingt septieme 187" A determined Christ walks over the vanquished Satan This fascinating engraving, after a Blake drawing, depicts a muscular and single-minded Christ with a bow in one hand and arrow in the other walking on the beard and chest of Satan, who despite his lifeless eyes reaches for Christ's bow. Blake's Christ is more reminiscent of Hercules or Gilgamesh than the Christ known to us through church iconography and his Satan reminds us more of Zeus than Christianity's Devil. Archibald Russell in The Engravings of William Blake (Houghton Mifflin, 1912) that this image illustrates a passage in Paradise Lost (Bk.VI, 763), but was an allegory for the triumph of imagination or creativity over reason. Thomas Butts, senior (1757-1845) and junior (1788-1862), were both given drawing and engraving lessons by Blake starting in March 1806. They produced a number of plates from Blake's designs although his level of direct involvement can only be estimated. The present plate was sold by the Butts' descendants at Sotheby's, lot 20, 24 June, 1903. The plate was acquired shortly after the auction by Edward J. Shaw of Walsall. He apparently had printed a number of impressions by December 1903. These are the earliest recorded impressions of this plate (other than a single impression sold with the plate at the auction). The plate remained in Shaw's possession until 1925 when it was sold at Sotheby's (29 July, lot lot158) to Mansfield. The New York dealers E.Weyhe, bought a number of impressions (and possibly the plate itself) as they still had multiple copies for sale as late as 1965. Essick records 18 copies of this print, on various paper types, but no order of precedence is given, and he had not seen any `proof' impressions. Essick The Separate Plates of William Blake.

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1903 - 1903 Original Hardback Wisden. Very Good Condition.

1903. Hi, Here we have a very rare 1903 Original Hardback Wisden, in Very Good Condition. The 8th Wisden Hardback. As per all 1903s the hinges were broken, Wisden forgot the strengtheners and hence why you never see one with original hinges or just with broken ones, but I have had them proffesionally restored and you can hardly tell, otherwise a super book. The lettering (gilt) is bright and strong to the front and to the spine. The front board is in excllent condition. The spine cloth has the odd mark and at an angle the rear board has a splattering of marks but not obvious unless you look under light. The pastedowns are bright and yellow, and the pages very clean, some spotting around the photoplate tissue which is in very good condition. 1903 is a rare Wisden.

MEANDERINGS: Special For the 'Singapore Free Press.' Two Articles on Travels in

Singapore [1903-07], Singapore Free Press. Blue cloth album,. covers faded, corners rubbed, several pieces of cloth miss-. ing, 74 numbered pages, each page has 3 columns of articles. tipped in from the newspaper, 25 x 30.5 cm. contents clean.. A very interesting collection of newspapers, issued in serial form, each numbered, and all signed by C.T.S, and extracted from the SINGAPORE FREE PRESS. A most detailed & extensive description of Japan and Malaya. * The first part covers pages 1-63 and is a comprehensive article of the author's sojourn & travels throughout all of Japan. It begins in 1903 through the last part in 1906. The author left Singapore, bound for Japan via Hong Kong and Shanghai, with passage on a Japanese ship. The British author befriended several Japanese in an earnest effort to learn about the Japanese personality and to write of their spirit and excellent manners. It is a lovely, flowing narrative from his own diary, and covers the first stop in Hong Kong. A lovely description of the "quiet" island and it's steep Peak. With day trips to Aberdeen, the post office and so on. * Next stop was Shanghai, where it was winter ! A ride in the Chinese wheel-barrow, taking photos, visit to the race course, the Country Club, Nanking Road, the Bund, a trip down the river, back to the ship, and continue on to Japan. * Arrival at Nagasaki, watching as 1360 tons of coal were man-handled aboard in some four hours ! From here on the story is continued with much excellent detail about Japan, her people, sights, traditions and scenery. * Mr. S. tells us of his Jinriksha rides to the various sights. What makes this narrative not only different but superior to others is the attention to detail. The meticulous author tells us his story of the sights and sounds of the country and people as if he were a camera. He faithfully records exactly what turn-of-the century Japan was like. He noticed everything & faithfully recorded it in these articles. Using his ship as a "hotel" the author visited all of the ports from Nagasaki to Yokohama. Stopping at each port, he thoroughly explored each city to the maximum. The next port was Kobe and the Naval Review, Motomachi, Shinto & Buddhist shrines. On to Yokohama, where the author had breakfast with Basil Chamberlain on Easter Sunday, and who escorted him via Jinrickishas to see the cherry blossoms. On to Ueno park, Shinto shrines, a Christian book store, and other points of interest in Tokyo. Return to Yokohama to to the Ball by the St. George Society, a visit to the Buddhist Temple of Hommonji at Ikegami. Then Mr. S. continued on a journey throughout the rest of Japan, down the West coast visiting the sights, taking trains, horseback rides, and by jinrikishas to Miyanoshita, Shizuoka, down the Tokaido, to Kyoto, Miidera, Awata Palace, Kin and Gin Kakuji, Chuzenji, Nikko, Utsunomiya, up Mt. Fuji, Karuizawa, experienced an earthquake, tea-ceremony, Ise & much more. * The second part also written by C.T.S. covers pages 66-77 with three columns of articles tipped in concerning his travels and experiences in Malaya from 1907-07. It starts with notes on Penang, of coolies, notable English merchants, natives, Taipings, motoring, Ipoh and beyond, Seremban curios, long motor trips to Raub and Kuala Lumpur, and other random journeys throughout the country. Page 76 has an article extracted from THE JOURNAL OF THE THAMES, Feb. 20, 1892 which is on sailing. A few last random articles from the Singapore Free Press concerning H.G. Wells. Most all articles are either layed down, or pinned to the pages with period straight-pins. A most obscure and otherwise unpublished set of excellent primary essays. After a search of several bibliographies to try to determine just who C.T.S. is, we could not find a matching name. Clearly Mr. S. was a British resident or possibly civil servant who lived and worked in Singapore during this period. * Excellent primary resource.         THE WOODLANDERS (Presentation Copy Inscribed by the Author)

London: Osgood, McIlvaine, 1903. Hardy, Thomas. THE WOODLANDERS. With a map of Wessex. London: Macmillan, 1903. Early reprint edition in original publisher's blue cloth with gilt decoration and lettering. A FINE, fresh copy INSCRIBED by the author on the front free endpaper and dated 1907. The presentation is rather enigmatic. "For Alliance sake (I. K. H7. VI)." Hardy seems to be quoting Shakespeare's Henry VI, Part 1, Act Two, Scene Five in which an unjust death is blamed as being "for alliance sake." THE WOODLANDERS is itself filled with Shakespeare allusions, especially Hamlet, and Henry VI Part 1 is alluded to in other of Hardy's works. A mystery only partially solved and a recipient as yet entirely unknown. Purdy p. 57.. Inscribed By Author. Decorative Cloth. Fine.
