THE WORKS. The White Company; Micah Clarke; The Refugees; Rodney Stone; The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes; The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes; A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of Four; The Great Shadow and Uncle Bernac; A Duet with an Occasional Chorus; Tragedy of the Korosko and the Green Flag; The Stark-Munro Letters and Round the Red Lamp; and The Exploits of Brigadier Gerard

Smith, Elder, and Co. London. 1903. THE AUTHOR'S EDITION. 12 volumes, complete. Limited edition of 1000 sets, numbered and signed by Conan Doyle in The White Company. Illustrated with 24 full page plates, by Arthur Twidle (20), Sidney Paget (1), B. West Clinedinst (1), and W.B. Wollen (2). Finely bound in recent full red morocco. Spines with five raised bands, the compartments with gilt lettering and centre decorations. Single gilt ruled border to boards. Top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Some thumbing and creasing to a few pages but overall an excellent set which has been handsomely bound. ------ Only 510 of the 1000 sets were issued by Smith, Elder & Company in 1903. The remaining copies were passed to John Murray and were reissued with new title pages, still dated 1903, in 1917. ---- Green and Gibson's bibliography of the works of Conan Doyle states; "The author considered this edition of his works to be of great importance: he revised parts, and added notes and a number of special introductions. He remarks in the preface that it had for some time been his ambition to have such a collection. Because of the author's friendship with Reginald Smith, he agreed to sign the thousand copies of the English issue. He was not, however, prepared to do the same for the American publisher, though he was asked. He made it known that he would only consider doing so for a considerable fee. The English issue also has the further attraction of having two illustrations in each volume rather than one." (Green & Gibson, p. 233).

Two small nicks in cloth at crown of spine panel, small stain on page. [1], else a bright, near fine copy. A nice association copy of a very. scarce book. (#147239). First edition, first issue. Presentation copy with brief inscription in Shiel's hand to fellow writer and Shiel acolyte Terence Ian Fytton Armstrong (a.k.a. John Gawsworth) on recto of title leaf: "F. A. / from M. P. Shiel." "This story is compounded of distinct elements of mystery, adventure, and romance narrative. Briefly, it is the history of Edward Denman, heir to a treasure, of his romance -- a most unsatisfactory one -- with Lucy 'Hill,' and of the efforts of the ubiquitous Hagen clan to seize Denman's hidden treasure. Barnes, a railroad engineer, is a martyr to the romance, and suffers meekly thru the fabulous antics of his social superiors. The Denman treasure is walled in a vault with literally countless doors of impregnable construction. It proves impossible to locate the treasure by breaking open the doors, so the Hagens concentrate on finding the hidden code showing the number of the vault which holds the jewels. Their machinations involve marriages of convenience, mayhem, train- wrecks, maimings, and schemings against obstacles galore. Like many of Shiel's novels, the ending is disappointing because it seems so far from according with our natural expectations." - Morse (1980). Hubin (1994), p. 737. Morse, The Works of M. P. Shiel Updated (1980), pp. 139-40.

        The Principles of Mathematics.

Cambridge: at the University Press,, 1903. Vol. I [all published]. Large octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered and decorated gilt, covers with double rule border blocked in blind, edges untrimmed. Bookseller's ticket to front pastedown. Spine slightly faded with minor stains, extremities a little rubbed, tips bumped and a little worn, hinges reinforced, internally fine; overall an excellent copy. First edition of Bertrand Russell's first important book, the aim of which was to show that the notions of continuity, infinity, space, time, matter, and motion can all be understood arithmetically, as relations between numbers, both numbers and relations being understood by him to have an objective existence independent of thought and, in particular, of the "structure of intuition" to which he had appealed in his earlier book on geometry. Ultimately Russell sought to demonstrate that mathematics is but a branch of logic. The book continues "to be studied and debated by successive generations of philosophers, and it is as the author of [this and one other] that Russell's permanent place in the history of ideas is assured" (ODNB). The Principles of Mathematics contains the first discussion of Russell's Paradox, the most famous of the paradoxes in the foundations of set theory, which so unsettled Frege when Russell revealed it to him (Oxford Dictionary of Philosophy). Russell revealed a fundamental limitation in earlier systems of symbolic logic; his solution, the theory of types, introduced the hierarchy of numbers, sets of numbers, sets of sets of numbers, etc. This system served as a vehicle for the first formalizations of the foundations of mathematics; it is still used in some philosophical investigations and in branches of computer science (Baldwin and Lessmann). The first volume was all that was ever published. Instead of proceeding on his own, Russell agreed to collaborate with his former tutor A. N. Whitehead in the production of a massive work of logic and mathematics that would serve as the second volume not only to The Principles of Mathematics, but also to Whitehead's Treatise on Universal Algebra. This was to be the Principia Mathematica, published in three volumes between 1911 and 1913.

Ode on the Intimations of Immortality. With a Frontispiece by Walter Crane, and Under the care of C.R. Ashbee.

London: Edward Arnold, 1903., 1903. Limited to 150 copies only, all on Vellum. This copy is No. 86. Pp. 12 + (2). Publisher's vellum boards titled in gilt to spine, embossed rose with motto 'Soul is Form' to centre of upper. Hand coloured forntispiece and vignette to colophon. Hand gilt and hand coloured initials. Upper board slightly warped. Pages edges and binding a little dusty. An unusual and attractive of Wordsworth's famous poem, today viewed as is best work. The poem relies on the concept of pre-existence, the idea that the soul existed before the body, to connect children with the ability to witness the divine within nature. As children mature, they become more worldly and lose this divine vision, and the ode reveals Wordsworth's understanding of psychological development.

Architekturschatz. Eine Sammlung von Aufnahmen, Mustergilt, Bauwerke, Architekturtheile, und Details von Meistern Baukunst aller Zeiten und Länder

Leipzig: Baumgärtner's Buckhandlung, 1903. Original. Folio. Content Good to VG/Covers Poor but protective: Front cover tearing along spine. Pages are brittle; four preliminary pages and a few plates have chips to edges, but not enough to affect the images or text. Former owner's name (B. Besabotnoff, Berlin) on front cover in ink, but there is no information anywhere on the Internet about this name/person.. Oversize folio of green cloth over front/back boards; dark green lettering on front board. Spine is not board-reinforced. Top, bottom, and fore edges protected by un-reinforced green cloth now only attached to back cover. Contains 304 loose sheets: Title page, 3 pages with list of plates, and the 300 bw plates (collated, all plates present). Heavy and will require extra postage (10 pounds/ 4.5 kilos). Series of photographs of German "architectural treasures" taken from 1897 to 1903 by architect Hermann Ruckwardt. Baumgartner's published this in 1897, 1902, and 1903. This is the 1903 edition which includes the "latest" photos by Ruckwardt.Table of contents lists the buildings and their architects. Some floor plans are also reproduced. A treasure trove of historic architectural interior and exterior patterns, gilt, buildings, parts, and details. Includes all sorts of villas, bridges, churches (including superb organs), synagogues, palaces, and other buildings throughout Germany and some in Budapest, Copenhagen, and Vienna. The list of plates includes the building/bridge/etc., its location, the particular view (front, bedroom, etc.) and the name of the architect and, in some cases, the year. The plates aslo include this information and the year of the actual photo. Because these photos are pre-World War (both), many of these places either no longer exist or were heavily restored. This is, therefore, a valuable reference for architectural historians, architectural sculptors, clergy, and anyone who simply appreciates beautiful photos of beautiful architecture. Scarce. Only 6 copies exist in Worldcat, and only 3 are this edition. A true find!

        Manuscript. "Ecclesiastes[,] or the preacher.

No place [Park Ridge, IL; Hingham, MA] 8vo (21 x 13 cm; 8.25" x 5.125"). [56] ff.. no date [ca. 1903–06] Frederic W. Goudy is famous as a type designer, owner of a press, advocate of good type design in all print media, and an inspiring spirit of the American fine press movement at the beginning of the 20th century. We know that he took some of his own inspiration from the British and American Arts and Crafts movement and its interest in medieval manuscripts. Virtually unknown is his creation of medieval-inspired manuscripts, indited on parchment, illuminated, hand-colored, illustrated, and then bound appropriately. He created this rendering of Ecclesiastes without providing a colophon but did initial the title-page thus tying its creation to him. The overall style would point to the 1890s. The first leaf bears a gilt border on the recto but is otherwise blank; this is followed by two blank leaves, then the title-leaf. The recto bears an asymmetrical illuminated and polychromatic four-element border filling the top, inner, and bottom sides. The wording is presented in a modified serif with the "E" of Ecclesiastes done in red on a gold field with some white floral elements, and the "P" of "Preacher" is in red with black hashing. The verso is blank as is the next leaf. The biblical text begins on 6r and all of the text leaves bear illuminated, polychromatic, and illustrated borders on two of the four sides of the page. => Each border is unique, there are no repeats. The text is enlivened with infills of red, green, and gold, as well as vines and even bowls with flowers. The many human faces that appear in some of the borders may well be those of friends, neighbors, or acquaintances. The leaf/page construction of the manuscript is this, with a very few exceptions: a leaf of parchment is folded in half and sewn to the binding at the open end, thus leaving inner "pages" blank, as with Asian books. The text of this manuscript, then, is present on the outer surfaces of the folded leaves. Binding: Dark brown leather with a richly embossed border on the covers that has been gilt over the embossing, and an inner frame offering a central lobed oval with pendants and corner pieces with arabesque designs on a gold ground. Modeled on that "used in the 17th and 18th centuries to produce sharp inlaid medallion designs of the Persian-style binding. The supporting board was hollowed out in the exact shape of the stamp to be used, then the dampened leather was placed over the board. When applied to the leather, the heated stamp molded into the contours of the board and created a deep impression. The gilt patterns were applied to paper, perhaps because paper took the gilding more readily than leather. The paper was then placed between the leather and the stamp, hence becoming sealed to the leather during the stamping process" (Beinecke Library Exhibit "Islamic Books and Bookbinding," Arabic ms. 166, ). Pastedowns of lighter brown leather with inlaid blue leather central lobed oval; pendants and corner pieces with arabesque designs All edges gilt. Binding as above, spine expertly repaired using the Japanese long-fiber method and then toned. One blank leaf with a cut. Folded edges of two bifolia partially opened. => A beautiful, curious, and sumptuous production; an extraordinary relic of a legend in lettering.

Prince Henry of Prussia in America: Historical Review of His Highness' American Travels

New York: The Elite Art Press, 1903. 1st. Hardcover. Good. A WONDERFUL DOCUMENT IN THE WARM HISTORY OF TURN-OF-THE-CENTURY GERMAN-AMERICAN RELATIONS. The very uncommon 1903 1st edition of this exhaustive retelling of the historic trip made to The United States by Prussia's Prince Henry (brother of Kaiser Wilhelm) in early 1902. The 1st edition was also called the "Imperial Purple Edition", intended to impress in its luxury and scale, and was limited to only 1,000 copies. Surprisingly, the binding of this very heavy (14+ lbs.), thick folio has held up nicely and is very strong. The front cover though show considerable pealing along the front hinge and there's notable fading as well along the spine, making this copy Good+ only. Top-edge gilt, deckled fore and bottom edges. Crisp black-and-white portraits thruout (including J.P. Morgan) and a nicely-printed text on thick, high-quality paper. In spite of the chipping along the front cover, this remains a solid, presentable copy of what must be a truly uncommon title in its original 1903 printing.

        La légende de Soeur Béatrix.

Paris: Librairie A. Rouquette 4to (25 cm, 9.84"). [2] ff., 67, [1] pp.; [68] ff.. 1903 Beautiful and scarce. This is signed => no. 1 of an edition of 150 on Japan paper (there were also 10 on "papier vélin" re-imposed in 4s) color printed and with watercoloring after the original by Henri Caruchet, the coloring executed under his direction by artists at the atelier of A. Charpentier et Fils. The title-page is printed in red and black, with Soeur Béatrix's face in a central medallion of blue, grey, and white. This volume for connoisseurs offers two distinct parts: first, the text printed and all the illustrations present as fully colored, delicately washed in shades of pink, blue, purple, grey, white, and earth tones; and second, a set of the illustrations in proofs uncolored and without text. Most of the illustrations in both suites are => initialed by Caruchet. Jean Emmanuel Charles Nodier (1780–1844) was a French author and librarian, appointed to the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal in 1824. His literary style => much influenced the Romantics, including Victor Hugo and Alfred de Musset. This legend, first published in La Revue de Paris (1838), is representative of his fantastical oeuvre. It was later adapted into a French opera (Béatrice, 1914) and a film (1923). Signed Binding: Crushed half milk chocolate morocco over marbled paper boards signed "V. Champs," gilt author, title, and date to spine; patterned marbled endpapers (different from the covers). Original gilt and hand-colored stiff cream wrappers bound in, showing Béatrix full-figure on the front, her hands extended outward beneath the gilt title. Provenance: An initialed ink inscription beneath the Justification du tirage states this copy was "Offert à Madame Conquet" — who must have been related to => M.L. Conquet, "the great Paris publisher of works of the romantic school," whose publications were famous for being very limited editions and for the "high artistic quality of their illustrations" ("Books and Authors," The New York Times, 26 March 1898). Binding as above. One small nick on the front leather near the spine, and board extremities (paper and leather) lightly rubbed. The publisher's embossed authentication stamp below the limitation statement. Text clean, unblemished. => Simply, excellent.

The gilt text is otherwise very bright and clean. There are no prior ownership markings of any kind within this copy. Schmiltz 12.26.[19]18 & Another of him 1918. **** ABOUT THE U.S.S. WEST ELDARA West Eldora briefly served with the U.S. Navy in the immediate postwar World War I period as the auxiliary ship USS West Eldara (ID-3704), she was in service: 23 Nov 18-16 Sept. 1942 Renamed: 1918: USS West Eldara 1919: West Eldara 1936: Mae Fate: Sunk by U-515, 17 September 1942. * U.S. Navy service, 1918-1919. West Eldara was launched on 14 October 1918, and completed over the next few weeks. Delivered just too late to see service in the war, she was commissioned into the Navy on 23 November at the Puget Sound Navy Yard for operation with the Naval Overseas Transportation Service (NOTS) as USS West Eldara (ID-3704). Lt Comdr. John P. Tibbets, USNRF, was placed in command. See a photo of him in this album. * West Eldara sailed on 8 December, 1918 for San Francisco, California, entering the Mare Island Navy Yard six days later for repairs to her steering gear. Four days after Christmas, the ship got underway from the west coast, bound via the Panama Canal for New York, where she arrived on 14 January 1919. With a cargo of flour and lard, West Eldara departed for Europe on the 24th. Upon her arrival at Gibraltar, the ship was routed on to the Near East, and on 12 February, headed for Constantinople, arriving on the 22nd. Our album documents and records photos of the above. * After discharging her cargo, West Eldara returned via Gibraltar to the United States, arriving at New York on 7 April. On 16 April the ship departed N.Y. with a cargo of Army supplies destined for Antwerp and Plymouth, England. The vessel departed the British Isles on 12 May bound once more for New York, where she arrived on the 29th. On 4 June, West Eldara was decommissioned and returned the same day to the stewardship of the USSB. [extracted from wikipedia below] **** Our album follows for the most part the above wikipedia citation of her voyage. However, there is no date stating just which ship's Ensign Schmiltz was stationed on when he visited Tsingtao area [Qingdao, in Shandong province] and stay at Chefoo [Yantai] just above Wei Hai, in an early visit with photos dating 1903-1904. *** OTHER BIBLIOGRAPHICAL REFERENCES: Silverstone, Paul H.
