[MECHNIKOV ON THE IMMUNE SYSTEM] Nevospriimchivost' k infekcionnim boleznyam [i.e. Immunity in Infectious Diseases]

St. Petersburg: K.L. Rikker, 1903. [4], II, 604, VII pp. 8vo. Original wrappers. Good condition. The spine is carefully restored. Owner's pre-revolutionary stamp on the title. The first Russian edition. Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov (1845-1916), the celebrated Russian biologist, was the second Russian Nobel Laureate. He was awarded the prize for his work on immunity. Mechnikov discovered and described phagocytosis-the phenomenon that is pivotal for the modern understanding of immunity. Mechnikov only wrote three major books in his lifetime-two of them, The Nature of Man, and The Prolongation of Life: Optimistic Studies are works of social philosophy. This is the main book on biology by him. He combined all of his studies and discoveries in the field in this one book, originally published in French. This edition is rare, especially in original wrappers.

I Mille Da Genova a Capua

Adriano Salani, 1903.

Thomas Theodor Heine: Im Jenseits (Originalzeichnung)

1903 - Bleistift, Tusche und Deckweiß auf Karton. 36 x 29 cm. Links unten monogrammiert. Veröffentlicht: Simplicissimus. Jahrgang 8 (1903), Heft 19, Seite 145. (Titelseite).

Typed Letter Signed, in German, oblong 8vo, Geneva, Dec. 16, 1903

      - An extremely early letter to a Doctor. [Moses Gaster, chief rabbi of the Sephardic communities in England from 1887-1918] "I still haven't had word from you about the university courses, as you so kindly promised. But, the matter does not allow for delay, so I ask you to be kind enough to let me have it as soon as possible. The delegation of Russian A.C. members is going to Vienna next week. We must not expect peaceful results from these negotiations, though. In Vienna they already know about the Kharkov decisions and there is absolutely no inclination to make any concessions at all. Thus a struggle will follow, and in the very near future. We must proceed as quickly as possible in order not to be caught unaware again. At the request of the Russian A.C. members I sent Mr. B. Mossinson, a good public speaker, to London yesterday to launch the campaign there. He will allow himself the liberty of paying you a visit, dear doctor, and I ask you, for the sake of the cause, to support him. You may find it appropriate for him to take part inthe Johnston meeting on the 20th. In any case, he is completely at your disposal." In conclusion Weizmann thanks Gaster for a "Speedy reply regarding the university courses and the propaganda effort ." Signed, "Dr. Ch. Weizmann." [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Papini fu nominato in particolare redattore - capo. Illustrated edition of Eugène Rougon lacking one plate; small loss to front free endpaper of first edition in English of Abbé Mouret; front free endpaper of The Dram-Shop lacking. The other nine first editions in English are: Abbé Mouret's Transgression; Doctor Pascal; The Dream; Money; Stories for Ninon; the Three Cities trilogy (Lourdes; Rome; Paris); Truth.         Principia Ethica.

Cambridge University Press, Cambridge 1903 - Half title + TP + Dedication page + [vii]-xxvii + [1]-232, Octavo. First Edition. Moore's scarce first book and the one that, at least in the English-speaking world is "taken to be the starting point of contemporary ethical theory" (Encyclopedia of Philosophy). From the library of George Herbert Palmer (1842-1933) with his bookplate on the inside front cover. Palmer was the senior member of the Harvard philosophy department during its "Golden Age" and a notable writer on ethics in his own right. His best known work, The Nature of Goodness, was also published in 1903. While Palmer tried to provide a positive definition of goodness, it is one of the fundamental tenets of Moore's Principia that goodness is indefinable. Original brown cloth with somewhat dulled, gilt lettering on the spine. Minor wear to spine ends and tips. Pages a bit browned but, overall, a very lovely copy with an important association. ADDITIONAL PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Pride and Prejudice

London : George Allen , 1903 A fair copy of the 3rd issue of the 'Peacock Edition' of Pride and Prejudice with illustrations by Hugh Thomson. In the original green decorative cloth binding with spectacular gilt peacock design to front board and gilt designs to spine. Top page edges gilt. The binding is clean and sound, but the designs are slightly faded; there is a little pulling to the spine; slight scuff to back board and light wear to corners. The original endpapers are present. The fep has a very interesting inscription. This copy was bought in 1904 and at the time, the suffragettes were beginning to turn to direct action to raise awareness of women's right to vote. The inscription, dated Xmas 1904, begins 'To Elizabeth, with nothing of the New Woman about her ..' There is a little splitting of the endpapers at the joints with the book block, and the book is a little shaken, with the stitching visible at some points, but the binding is sound. Contents are generally clean and in good to very good condition. There is some spotting between pp 474-476, and some spotting to the final blank. Please enquire if you would like to see more images.
