        I. [Emperor Nikolas I].

Suvorin Skt. Peterburg 1903 - 4 volumes bound in two, quarto (29.3 x 21 cm). Half-title, title, [4], 472 pp., notes and appendix 473 - 800 pp., with 49 plates and 19 facsimile, ; 396 pp., notes and appendix 401 - 820 pp., with 40 plates incl. 3 double-page and 17 facsimile. Publisher's calf over dark red cloth boards, gilt lettering to upper cover, gilt lettering and large gilt crowns to spine; worn, extremities rubbed. Complete set in the most desirable version of the publisher's binding with large gilt crowns to spines. This monumental work, devoted to the Russian Emperor Nikolas I (1796-1855), was compiled by the prominent historian and director of the Imperial Public Library in Saint Petersburg: Shilder (1842-1902). Based on the research of scarce documents, notes and letters of the contemporaries, the work gives details of the life and reign of the Russian tsar from his childhood and ascending to the throne until the suppression of the Polish Uprising in 1831. The text is accompanied by the unique illustrated material drawn from the state archives and private collections. Shilder intended to cover the whole emperor's lifetime in five volumes but these plans were interrupted by the author's death. Among Shilder's publications on the Russian rulers the work on Nikolas I is the most scarce. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Bildnis Theodor Herzls.

1903 - Soft ground etching in black and white, 60x50 cm including frame. Artist's name etched in black at bottom right of etching, with his Hebrew name underneath (Haim Aaron ben David); etching glued on a white background with Theodor Herzl's own signature in pencil at the bottom right; at the bottom left of the picture is a star of David with Hermann Struck's initials in it, to its right is his signature in pencil. Very good condition. Struck's most famous work and one of the symbols of zionism - a powerful portrait of Theodor Herzl, signed by Herzl himself. Hermann Struck (1876-1944) and Theodor Herzl (1860-1904) met several times in Egypt and Vienna before this portrait etching was created in 1903. A fervent Zionist and admirer of Herzl's, Struck made his preparatory sketches for the portrait when he visited the political activist's house in Vienna. During the sixth Zionist Congress in Basel in August 1903, the two met again and on this occasion Herzl asked Struck to allow him to sign a few of the first copies of the etching. Struck depicted Herzl's visionary side by giving us the impression that he is looking towards the future. His radiance is all the more flagrant as the dark background makes his solemn face stand out. Although Struck made two additional etchings of this portrait after Herzl's death, it is the 1903 version that has remained the most famous of his works, and the most iconic of all the portraits of Theodor Herzl. Indeed, the image came to be known as one of the emblems of Zionism and has been used on various posters, products and catalogs ever since: "Within a short period of time the etching became so well known that it emerged as a symbol of Zionism, especially after the death of the charismatic leader in 1904. It was then that the portrait won the respect of all the Zionist circles. By the time the State of Israel was founded, this portrait of Theodor Herzl was considered the epitome of Zionism itself. It decorated the walls of every Zionist event, anywhere." (Hermann Struck, Printmaking Artist. Tefen Open Museum, 2007, page 38). Hermann Struck was a German-Israeli artist who gained fame for his etchings. He published a leading work on the subject, Die Kunst des Radierens, in 1908. He was commissioned to etch portraits of many leading figures of his time, including Einstein and Herzl. Struck acquired a reputation as a teacher of graphic art, and began to teach the techniques of the art print while still in Germany. Among his many students were Max Liebermann, Lovis Corinth, Marc Chagall, Jacob Steinhardt, and Joseph Budko. He moved to Haifa in 1922. Today the city has a museum dedicated to him. Theodor Herzl, a Hungarian journalist of Jewish descent, is regarded as the founding father of political Zionism. By the time the etching was made, he was already known for having chaired the first Zionist congress in 1897. In 1896, at 35 years old, he had published Der Judenstaat, Versuch einer Modernen Lösung der Judenfrage (The Jewish State, Proposal of a modern solution for the Jewish question) in Vienna. The previous year, Herzl had witnessed the Dreyfus affair in Paris and had been appalled at the outbreak of anti-Semitism that it had generated in the "birthplace of human rights". He came to the conclusion that the creation of an independent Jewish state during the 20th century would be the best way for Jews to escape European anti-Semitism. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        The Life of Feodor Studit].

1903 7411 - Folio (37 x 23 cm). 95 ll. numbered in [Cyrillic numerals], including 19 full page watercolours, paper shelf label of ????????????? ?????, ??????????? ????? [International Books, antiquarian department] to lower pastedown. Contemporary brown calf on wooden boards, decorative floral ornaments in blind to boards and spine, red morocco label with title in blind to spine, red edges; lacking one clasp. Beautiful illuminated manuscript produced by one of the best scribes of the early XX century Russia; very fresh and in its original binding. The text, accompanied by 19 full page watercolours highlighted in gilt, presents the life of the Byzantine monk Feodor (759—826) known to have been one of the biggest authorities of asceticism in his time. The colophon lists not only the name of the creator of the manuscript, scribe Blinov, but also points to the original source of this text – a book dated 7096 as from the creation of the world [1588]. The manuscript has all the distinctive features of the work of the celebrated calligrapher Ivan Blinov (1872 - 1944): high quality paper; sophisticated calligraphy with the use of semi-uncial script; skillfully executed miniatures and leather binding over wooden boards in the style XVII century. Since his teenage years Blinov was engaged in copying illuminated manuscripts, taking works of the local Old Believers scribes as examples. With time he started to receive multiple commissions for manuscripts from the Nizhegorodskaya province wealthy peasants, as well as prominent collectors, who included Petr Alekseevich Ovchinnikov (1843-1912) and Grigoriy Matveevich Prianishnikov (1845-1915). It was one of Blinov's main patrons, collector Ovchinnikov, who addressed the young calligrapher with the following words: "You will become a celebrated scriptor and artist, this is the way they used to produce manuscripts for the tsars in the old days". When working on the commissions, Blinov thoroughly studied collections of the Historical museum and Tretyakovskaya gallery; library of the the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius and multiple private collections. He also collaborated with such celebrated artists as V.M. Vasnetsov, B.V. Zvorykin, M.V. Nesterov, A.I. Savin and D.S. Stelletskiy. Nowadays Blinov's manuscripts can be found in the collections of Russian State and National libraries; State Historical museum and the Historical and Architectural museum of the Nizhegorodskaya province. ___________________________________________ ???????????? ?????? ???????????????? ?????????? ????? ??????????? ????? ?? ????? ?????????? ??????????? ?????? ?? ???? ? ?????? ? ?????????? ????????? ? ????????? ???? ??????? ????? ????????, ?????????????? 19 ???????????? ???????????, ????????? ????? ????????????? ?????? ??????? He expresses his pleasure that she had received an "A" for her studies and says she should be proud of her accomplishments, "I don't know what A is for in your examination, I suppose it is a number-one or first in everything, and you should feel proud of such an examination." Tells of the weather and he couldn't make planned trips because of the snow. Says he is going to Oklahoma City to attend the "Cattlemen's Convention" and will be there 2 or 3 days. He also was going to be a judge while there for the Roping and Riding contests at the request of Col. Zach Mulhall, his friend and Rodeo/Wild West promoter. Tells her that "several car loads of thoroughbred cattle will be there from the best breeders in the East and I want to see them." Later in 1903, they were married.

Octavo. Original red diagonally-ribbed cloth, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, triple frame to covers in blind, floral endpapers. Folding colour chart including the "Wheel-of-wealth" diagram tipped in to front pastedown as issued. Spine rolled and sunned with effaced library label to foot, extremities lightly rubbed, front cover very lightly marked, contents tanned, red pencil mark to front pastedown and underlining to title, ink-stamp of the Volkwirtschaftliches Seminar, University of Freiburg to the title verso. A very good copy. First edition, rare, with no copies traced in auction records, this copy from the library of noted German agricultural economist Max Sering, with his ink-stamp to the front free endpaper. In the late nineteenth century Sering (1857-1939) anticipated Nazi expansionism with his theory of "inner colonisation", advocating, by analogy with the American West, the settlement of small-scale farmers in the predominantly Polish regions of West Prussia and Posen, partly in response to concerns over Germany's growing population and consequent dependence on foreign agriculture, though also to stem to tide of "Polonization", a sentiment "infamously expressed in [Max] Weber's 1895 inaugural address at the University of Freiburg" (Guettel, German Expansionism, Imperial Liberalism and the United States, 1776-1945). Johannsen (1844-1928) "was a brilliant outsider with insights into theoretical economics that were ahead of his time ? His work in economics illustrates that important advances are often made by outsiders who do not suffer from the limitations of the export" (The New Palgrave). Born in Germany but spending much of his life in New York where he worked in the import-export business, he often used pseudonyms to hide his unorthodox opinions from his employers. In Der Kreislauf des Geldes he "developed a view of the economy in terms of circular flows of money and economic activities portrayed in the form of a wheel-of-wealth diagram. This was not the first attempt of this kind, but was perhaps the first to provide a complete statistical underpinning" (idem). Though Keynes wrote dismissively of him in the Treatise on Money, referring to him as a "crank" in a footnote, and did not mention him at all all in his General Theory, Johannsen in fact anticipated many of Keynes's ideas, notably in his discussion of the saving-investment relationship and of fluctuations in investment as the strategic factor in business cycles.

Wezatas Manadshafte [Special Issue on William Morris and the Kelmscott Press]

Goteborg Sweden: Wald Zachrisson, 1903. A rare copy of an issue of a Swedish publication honoring William Morris and the Kelmscott Press that beautifully exemplifies the breadth of Morris's influence on modern fine printing. This tribute was published by Wald Zachrisson, a master printer, publisher, and craftsman who was described in 1922 by Frederic Goudy in "Arts Typographica" as having "done more to lift the printing industry in Scandanavia than any other man." Peter Waldemar Anders Zachrisson (1861-1924) was a Swedish book printer based in Gothenburg. Zachrisson's important efforts to reform Swedish typography and book arts were inspired by William Morris among others. He named his printing company Wezäta AB after his initials. One of his publications that became an important medium for Zachrisson's ideas about printing, typography, and crafts were Wezätas month booklets. The booklets were published from 1902-1912 with widely varying content such as essays about Albrecht Dürer, Carl Milles, Ernst Josephson and Christopher Plantin, which alternated with essays whose themes are exemplified by titles like material idealism, Swedish art and the classic line, or a few words about taste. There were full booklets devoted to people like William Morris, Arnold Böcklin and Axel Petersson in Döderhult or to subjects like Japanese art. Every issue had changes - a new method of reproduction, new paper grades, colors or printing processes. Many German, English and American professionals and trade magazines expressed admiration. This is a remarkably fine copy of this special issue on Morris. It includes a biography in Swedish with a portrait of Morris, and drawings of Kelmscott Manor and the Kelmscott House and Press; a facsimile of four pages from "Notes by William Morris on His Aims in Founding the Kelmscott Press;" and copies of the first two pages of Reynard the Foxe, and two pages from the Chaucer. The cover of the periodical has the title and publication information surrounded by a beautiful color border of a William Morris design. In near fine condition save for a small stain on the bottom edge of the rear cover. 6 x 9 inches. Partially paginated [20 pages]. MOR/060316.

Mechnikov discovered and described phagocytosis-the phenomenon that is pivotal for the modern understanding of immunity. Mechnikov only wrote three major books in his lifetime-two of them, The Nature of Man, and The Prolongation of Life: Optimistic Studies are works of social philosophy. This is the main book on biology by him. He combined all of his studies and discoveries in the field in this one book, originally published in French. Prima edizione.
