Der Kreislauf des Geldes und Mechanismus des Sozial-Lebens.

Berlin: Puttkammer & Mühlbrecht,, 1903. Octavo. Original red diagonally-ribbed cloth, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, triple frame to covers in blind, floral endpapers. Folding colour chart including the "Wheel-of-wealth" diagram tipped in to front pastedown as issued. Spine rolled and sunned with effaced library label to foot, extremities lightly rubbed, front cover very lightly marked, contents tanned, red pencil mark to front pastedown and underlining to title, ink-stamp of the Volkwirtschaftliches Seminar, University of Freiburg to the title verso. A very good copy. First edition, rare, with no copies traced in auction records, this copy from the library of noted German agricultural economist Max Sering, with his ink-stamp to the front free endpaper. In the late nineteenth century Sering (1857-1939) anticipated Nazi expansionism with his theory of "inner colonisation", advocating, by analogy with the American West, the settlement of small-scale farmers in the predominantly Polish regions of West Prussia and Posen, partly in response to concerns over Germany's growing population and consequent dependence on foreign agriculture, though also to stem to tide of "Polonization", a sentiment "infamously expressed in [Max] Weber's 1895 inaugural address at the University of Freiburg" (Guettel, German Expansionism, Imperial Liberalism and the United States, 1776-1945). Johannsen (1844-1928) "was a brilliant outsider with insights into theoretical economics that were ahead of his time ? His work in economics illustrates that important advances are often made by outsiders who do not suffer from the limitations of the export" (The New Palgrave). Born in Germany but spending much of his life in New York where he worked in the import-export business, he often used pseudonyms to hide his unorthodox opinions from his employers. In Der Kreislauf des Geldes he "developed a view of the economy in terms of circular flows of money and economic activities portrayed in the form of a wheel-of-wealth diagram. This was not the first attempt of this kind, but was perhaps the first to provide a complete statistical underpinning" (idem). Though Keynes wrote dismissively of him in the Treatise on Money, referring to him as a "crank" in a footnote, and did not mention him at all all in his General Theory, Johannsen in fact anticipated many of Keynes's ideas, notably in his discussion of the saving-investment relationship and of fluctuations in investment as the strategic factor in business cycles.

Wezatas Manadshafte [Special Issue on William Morris and the Kelmscott Press]

Goteborg Sweden: Wald Zachrisson, 1903. A rare copy of an issue of a Swedish publication honoring William Morris and the Kelmscott Press that beautifully exemplifies the breadth of Morris's influence on modern fine printing. This tribute was published by Wald Zachrisson, a master printer, publisher, and craftsman who was described in 1922 by Frederic Goudy in "Arts Typographica" as having "done more to lift the printing industry in Scandanavia than any other man." Peter Waldemar Anders Zachrisson (1861-1924) was a Swedish book printer based in Gothenburg. Zachrisson's important efforts to reform Swedish typography and book arts were inspired by William Morris among others. He named his printing company Wezäta AB after his initials. One of his publications that became an important medium for Zachrisson's ideas about printing, typography, and crafts were Wezätas month booklets. The booklets were published from 1902-1912 with widely varying content such as essays about Albrecht Dürer, Carl Milles, Ernst Josephson and Christopher Plantin, which alternated with essays whose themes are exemplified by titles like material idealism, Swedish art and the classic line, or a few words about taste. There were full booklets devoted to people like William Morris, Arnold Böcklin and Axel Petersson in Döderhult or to subjects like Japanese art. Every issue had changes - a new method of reproduction, new paper grades, colors or printing processes. Many German, English and American professionals and trade magazines expressed admiration. This is a remarkably fine copy of this special issue on Morris. It includes a biography in Swedish with a portrait of Morris, and drawings of Kelmscott Manor and the Kelmscott House and Press; a facsimile of four pages from "Notes by William Morris on His Aims in Founding the Kelmscott Press;" and copies of the first two pages of Reynard the Foxe, and two pages from the Chaucer. The cover of the periodical has the title and publication information surrounded by a beautiful color border of a William Morris design. In near fine condition save for a small stain on the bottom edge of the rear cover. 6 x 9 inches. Partially paginated [20 pages]. MOR/060316.

Mechnikov only wrote three major books in his lifetime-two of them, The Nature of Man, and The Prolongation of Life: Optimistic Studies are works of social philosophy. This is the main book on biology by him. He combined all of his studies and discoveries in the field in this one book, originally published in French.

Typed Letter Signed, in German, oblong 8vo, Geneva, Dec. 16, 1903

      - An extremely early letter to a Doctor. [Moses Gaster, chief rabbi of the Sephardic communities in England from 1887-1918] "I still haven't had word from you about the university courses, as you so kindly promised. But, the matter does not allow for delay, so I ask you to be kind enough to let me have it as soon as possible. The delegation of Russian A.C. members is going to Vienna next week. We must not expect peaceful results from these negotiations, though. In Vienna they already know about the Kharkov decisions and there is absolutely no inclination to make any concessions at all. Thus a struggle will follow, and in the very near future. We must proceed as quickly as possible in order not to be caught unaware again. At the request of the Russian A.C. members I sent Mr. B. Mossinson, a good public speaker, to London yesterday to launch the campaign there. He will allow himself the liberty of paying you a visit, dear doctor, and I ask you, for the sake of the cause, to support him. You may find it appropriate for him to take part inthe Johnston meeting on the 20th. In any case, he is completely at your disposal." In conclusion Weizmann thanks Gaster for a "Speedy reply regarding the university courses and the propaganda effort ." Signed, "Dr. Ch. Weizmann." [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Papini fu nominato in particolare redattore - capo. Principia Ethica.

Cambridge University Press, Cambridge 1903 - Half title + TP + Dedication page + [vii]-xxvii + [1]-232, Octavo. First Edition. Moore's scarce first book and the one that, at least in the English-speaking world is "taken to be the starting point of contemporary ethical theory" (Encyclopedia of Philosophy). From the library of George Herbert Palmer (1842-1933) with his bookplate on the inside front cover. Palmer was the senior member of the Harvard philosophy department during its "Golden Age" and a notable writer on ethics in his own right. His best known work, The Nature of Goodness, was also published in 1903. While Palmer tried to provide a positive definition of goodness, it is one of the fundamental tenets of Moore's Principia that goodness is indefinable. Original brown cloth with somewhat dulled, gilt lettering on the spine. Minor wear to spine ends and tips. Pages a bit browned but, overall, a very lovely copy with an important association.
