Paris, P.-V. Stock, 1902 [imprimerie A. Pichat, Châtillon-sur-Seine]. - Ernest TARBOURIECH. La Cité Future. Essai d'une utopie scientifique. Paris, P.-V. Bel exemplaire. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

THE NIGGER OF THE "NARCISSUS." Preface

1902. [Hythe: privately printed for the author by J. Lovick, 1902.] 8 pp, stapled without wrappers as issued. First Separate Edition of this Preface, which consisted of 100 copies (of which 40 were destroyed, according to Conrad). This Preface had not appeared in the book itself (first published in America in November 1897), but had instead first appeared in the December 1897 issue of The New Review; Conrad revised that initial version before having this pamphlet printed up five years later, in November 1902.~This Preface has come to be known as the closest thing to Conrad's credo as a writer, as an artist. It was~his personal summation of the life of the artist up to 1897 and, in a limited sense, a harbinger of the artist to come after 1897... The Preface served as a literary anchor for Conrad in this early segment of his career... We see, then, feeding into the Preface several overlapping elements: Flaubert, of course; symboliste suggestions and doctrines; [Walter] Pater, with particular reference to [his essay] "Style"; [Henry] James, especially "The Art of Fiction"; a strong post-Wagnerian aesthetic, derived from Wagner's "amalgamation" of the arts; an 1890s language and attitude about aesthetic ideals and artistic elitism; and what was unique, that impressionism which both heightened and lessened in order to make the reader "see" with the peculiar intensity which we call Conradian. [Karl]~In 1914, Doubleday Page would issue this Preface as the booklet JOSEPH CONRAD ON THE ART OF WRITING.~This copy is fine except for the almost inevitable staple rust. Cagle A3f. Housed in a cloth folding case with leather label, which bears the small leather bookplate of the author, journalist and renowned book collector Barton Currie (1877-1962), whose library was sold at Parke-Bernet Galleries in 1963.

[Vassilissa la belle]

First edition and first edition of 9 illustrations including 4 full page Ivan Bilibine.Nice and rare copy in this condition.Ivan Yakovlevich Bilibin (Иван Яковлевич Билибин 1876-1942) is a painter and illustrator from St. Petersburg. Student of the painter Repine, he studied the arts and worked for two years alongside him before traveling to Europe. On his return to Russia, he co-founded with Leon Bakst the group Mir Iskousstva (Мир Искусства "The World of Art"), a collective that promotes meetings between artists and men of letters. From then on, he throws himself into the artistic enterprise of his life, illustrating traditional Russian tales, thus creating the "Bilibine style" that will characterize all the work of his career. Anxious to implement the appropriate graphic processes, he carries out extensive reseArches paper, collects the louboks (Лубок Russian popular images) and is enthusiastic about the ornamental miniatures and the brightness of the icons colors characteristic of the 17th century Russian. He also draws inspiration from embroidery and printed fabrics. Nevertheless, Bilibin is not limited to Russian folk culture; rich of his expeditions in Europe but also in the East (he lived in particular several years in Egypt), he likes to mix Russian and Oriental motifs, thus wishing to create a new language: the graphic language. The modernity of his style allows him to meet very soon an immense success and to answer to many requests for illustrations, that it is about tales and bylines (былины epic tales of oral tradition) but also of works in the theatrical field (sets and costumes). Bilibine brings as much care to the "decorations" of his works (vignettes, cartridges, frames) as to watercolors finely highlighted with a black line and enhanced with gold.         Litterarischer Palästina-Almanach : für das Jahr 5663-1902/1903 :VIII Jahrgang

Jérusalem : A.M. - - - - Abraham Moses LUNCZ (1854-1918) ) was a Russian scholar and editor born at Kovno, Russia. At age 14 he came to Jerusalem. Luncz, who suffered from early blindness, founded, in conjunction with Dr. Koisewski, an institution for the blind at Jerusalem. In the exploration of the Holy Land, Luncz has rendered great services from the historical, geographical, and physical standpoints, through his guide-books for Palestine, his Palestine annuals, and his Jerusalem almanac: Netibot ?iyyon we-Yerushalayim: Topography of Jerusalem and Its Surroundings (Jerusalem, Jahrbuch zur Beförderung einer Wissenschaftlich Genauen Kenntnis des Jetzigen und des Alten Palästina (Hebrew and German, 6 vols) Literarischer Palästina-Almanach (Hebrew; since 1894). He owned a Hebrew printing press in the Ezrat Yisrael neighborhood, across the street from his own home in Even Yisrael. From there he issued a number of works by Palestinian scholars, Estori Far?i's Kaftor wa-Fera? and Josef Schwarz's Tebu'ot ha-Are? being the first works published. He also produced a travel guide to Israel. As of 1904, he had in press a new edition of the Jerusalem Talmud with commentary and introduction. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

The Little White Bird or Adventures in Kensington Gardens.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1902 - Octavo. Original green cloth, titles and pictorial decoration to spine and front cover in gilt, top edge gilt. Spine ends a little creased, extremities slightly rubbed. An excellent copy. First US edition, first printing, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Yours Truly, J. M. Barrie". This is the first appearance in print of Peter Pan, in which Peter appears as a seven-day-old infant in this book-within-a-book London story-collection for adults. Barrie was increasingly turning away from prose to concentrate on drama at this time, and two years later his play Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up opened on 27 December 1904, breaking all previous theatrical records. In 1906 Barrie sanctioned the publication of the children's gift book, Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, with the text extracted from The Little White Bird and illustrated by Arthur Rackham.         John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1902 - 1902 Original Hardback Wisden, Very Good Condition

1902. Hi, This lot is an 1902 Original Hardback Wisden. In Superb condition The first Hardback that Wisden produced was in 1896, this is the seventh year of the hardback and a year I have found hard to find recently, especially in this condition. The front board is very clean with excellent, extremely bright gilt, one tiny mark to the top, the rear board is near perfect and the spine gilt is very bright and original. The hinges are very strong and the yellow pastedowns in top condition and very bright yellow. The photoplate is very good and internally a nice clean book. As good as mine on my shelf. The only downside and it is a bit picky is there is a tiny indentation to the edge of the rear board where a band has been around it. A rare Wisden in superb condition (++) and a very nice price.

        The Hound of the Baskervilles

London: George Newnes 1902 - First edition, first printing, with "you" for "your" on p. 13. Illustrated by Sidney Paget. Publisher's decorative red cloth binding designed by Alfred Garth Jones, ruled and titled in gilt with a hound's silhouette stamped in black, surrounded by a gilt floral design; lacking dust jacket. A very good copy, slightly shaken, with some sunning to spine and light wear to extremities, light foxing to top edge, front hinge very slightly starting at half-title, front pastedown with contemporary ownership signature and residue of now-removed label and rubber stamp, front free endpaper with small blind-stamp. Overall, an attractive copy with a clean text block and a bright, decorative binding. Green and Gibson A26. The Hound of the Baskervilles is Doyle's third novel to feature the well-known detective character Sherlock Holmes. Though the author had intended his second Holmes novel, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes (1894), to be the last, he continued the story into a third book after public demand, despite the ending of the second, in which Holmes falls to his death in the concluding story, "The Final Problem." The most popular of the Holmes cannon, The Hound of the Baskervilles purports to be an episode earlier in the detective's career, prior in chronology to "The Final Problem." The story tells of a murder mystery at the Baskerville Hall country house that involves the Baskerville family's superstition surrounding a hellhound myth. The plot was largely inspired by Doyle's golfing holiday at Cromer in Norfolk in the spring of 1901, where he spent time with a young journalist friend named Bertram Fletcher Robinson, who told Doyle a legend about a haunting ghost hound in the moors of Dartmoor. Like his previous two Holmes novels, The Hound of the Baskervilles is illustrated in black and white by Sidney Paget. Alfred Garth Jones (1872-1955) was an English artist, illustrator, and book designer whose style is hallmarked by his bold, thick lines and his Art Nouveau aesthetic. Trained in both Manchester and Paris, Jones created many types of book art, including illustrations, bookplates, binding designs, and page decorations. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
