Exceptionnel.

Diary of a Holiday spent in India, Burmah, and Ceylon in the Winter of 1901-2.

[Pollokshields] [Scotland]: J. Coats, [Privately Printed, by McCorquodale & Co., Glasgow], (1902).. 200 pp. + [27] leaves of plates. Limp tan cloth . First edition. Illus. with 27 b/w photos. With compliments card tipped-in to free front end-paper, signed by the author. A most intriguing, and well written, account of a young man's holiday on the subcontinent. James Monro Coats (1875-1946) was an American-born junior family member of the Paisley firm of Coats and Clark, the thread manufacturers, Scotland. Though he may have been trained for the family business, (as is indicated by the description of a visit to a Jute mill, where he reveals a great deal of knowledge concerning the raw and finished materials; and his visit to yet another mill owned by Clark) he "decided he didn't like it.. It may even have been this journey that made him decide against it, " (private correspondence from a Coats' family member). OCLC locates two copies: National Lib. Scotland and British Lib. Ref. Coll. A very good copy with crease to lower corner of front board, boards lightly soiled, light foxing on only a few leaves, else contents and plates clean.

FIRST EDITION. VERY NICE COPY. SCARCE. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Georges M.M. Sagnac (1869-1928) "studied mainly the radiation produced by X rays and the optics of interference. He is remembered today primarily for his design of a rotating interferometer and for the experimental results it provided. He was very interested in the theoretical analysis of optics of moving systems; his approach was classical, and he interpreted the results of optical experiments as contradicting Einstein's theory relativity.Sagnac's earliest research (and the subject of his dissertation) was motivated by the newly observed X rays. From 1896, the year following Röntgen's discovery, to 1900 Sagnac studied the radiations produced by X rays. He observed that secondary radiation is produced when X rays fall in heavier metals. He showed that this radiation contained secondary X rays (of lower frequency than the original x rays) and negatively charged rays. He suggested that it was through the action of the negative rays that X rays produce ionization in air." Sigalia Dostrovsky, DSB XII, pp.69-70. COPY SIGNED BY LANGEVIN TO LEOPOLD BRIZARD. First Edition of Langevin's doctoral thesis. Langevin, France's leading practitioner and expositor of mathematical physics, studied under Jean Perrin and Pierre Curie; a close friend of both Curies, he was present at the birth of the study of radioactivity. Einstein once said that Langevin would have "developed the special theory of relativity if it hadn't been done elsewhere," and praised the "extraordinary vivacity and clarity" of Langevin's scientific thinking (quoted in Quinn, Marie Curie, p. 260). His doctoral thesis, on the ionization of gases, was based on work he had begun at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge under the direction of J. J. Thomson; the thesis included a method of calculating the mobility of both positive and negative ions during their passage through a condenser by considering their diffusion and recombination. Langevin's thesis was published by Gauthier-Villars, who published Marie Curie's thesis on radioactivity a year later. The River War, An Historical Account of the Reconquest of the Soudan (two volumes, both first edition, first printing)

First edition, first printing (two volumes). Here is Churchill's second book and his last to be published in England in the 19th Century. This first edition is notable for a number of reasons. First, aesthetically it is lavish and striking; the large, weighty volumes are beautifully decorated with gilt representations of the Mahdi's tomb on the spines and a gunboat on the front covers. Second, from a collector's standpoint it is scarce; the publisher released only 2,646 copies of this beautiful edition, and this number includes both second and third printings. Third, bibliographically it is notable that this first edition is the *only* unabridged edition printed to this day. In 1902 Churchill (now a new member of Parliament) revised and abridged his text, excising much of the criticism of Kitchener for political reasons. All of the many subsequent editions of The River War are based on this 1902 abridged and revised text. Last but not least, the text is arresting, insightful, powerfully descriptive, and of enduring relevance. As a young officer in a colonial British army, Churchill is unusually sympathetic to the indigenous inhabitants and critical of the British army. These books offer us the candid perspective of the future great man of the 20th century in a distinctly 19th century world. Here is a chief architect of the Second World War involved in what has been called by some the last "genuine" cavalry charge of the British army. This work and in particular this edition is as important and desirable as any in the Churchill canon. Offered here is a collector-grade first printing set. The bindings of both volumes are unusually clean, with bright gilt, sharp corners, and only trivial shelf wear. Spine presentation is superior. Both volumes show some of the usual wrinkling at the spine ends, but both the color and gilt remain excellent. Unlike many copies, this set is entirely original, having suffered no restoration or repair. The contents of both volumes are truly noteworthy - unusually bright and clean, not just internally, but on the text block edges as well. The spotting endemic to this edition is absent here. We find no spotting, either internally or on the text block edges. Moreover, the contents remain tight in the bindings, with none of the typical splits or gutter breaks detected. The original black endpapers are present, as are all maps, plans, and illustrations, including the tissue guards at each frontispiece. The sole interior flaw detected is a 1.5 inch diameter brown stain on the tissue paper guard at the Volume II frontispiece. Both books have removable protective mylar covers. The set is housed in a custom-built, double clamshell presentation case in blue leather. Bibliographic reference; Cohen A2.1.b, Woods/ICS A2(a.1), Langworth p.29.

Le Rire. Journal humoristique paraissant le samedi.

Paris, Imprimerie du Rire, 1900 - 1902. 1902 2 volumi in-4° (318x235mm) in legatura in m. tela turchese e angoli con illustrazioni caricaturali impresse a secco e titolo in oro. Piatti pavonati.

1902. September 22 [1902]. Written to Mr. [William V.] Alexander, editor of Ladies Home Journal, who had requested a series of articles from Keller that were later published as The Story of My Life. Keller humbly thanks Alexander for payment for the last article; in part: "I only wish I could have made the story of my life more worthy of the generous praise it has received...It has meant a great deal in my life, and in Miss Sullivan's too -- the thought of the happiness that she says my compliance with your request has brought her is sweeter even than the thought of the kindness shown me in the letters that come constantly from old friends long silent and new friends whose words go to the heart..." Two 5" x 8" pages, typed with blue ribbon and signed "Helen Keller." A very early letter by Keller, preceding her first book, with exceptionally good content. Fine. .

"Edizione originale" in questo formato. Cfr. Bondy "Miniature Books", p. 97: "One of the most compendious one-volume works ever published in miniature format is the 1902 edition of Manzoni's great novel "I promessi sposi". The printer-publishers are the brothers Salmin of Padua who were responsible for the sensational "Dantino" and the tiny Galileo. In this volume dedicated to Queen Margherita of Savoy they have departed from the use of the ultra-small type used in these earlier volumes and employ a good legible 4,5-point type. Spielmann, n. 355A, writes: 'One of the most important and extensive works ever produced in such tiny compass'". Ben conservato.
