John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1902 - 1902 Original Hardback Wisden, Very Good Condition

1902. Hi, This lot is an 1902 Original Hardback Wisden. In Superb condition The first Hardback that Wisden produced was in 1896, this is the seventh year of the hardback and a year I have found hard to find recently, especially in this condition. The front board is very clean with excellent, extremely bright gilt, one tiny mark to the top, the rear board is near perfect and the spine gilt is very bright and original. The hinges are very strong and the yellow pastedowns in top condition and very bright yellow. The photoplate is very good and internally a nice clean book. As good as mine on my shelf. The only downside and it is a bit picky is there is a tiny indentation to the edge of the rear board where a band has been around it. A rare Wisden in superb condition (++) and a very nice price.

[London: Partington, 1902. [4],xiv,[3]-64,[xv]-xviii pp. Quarto. Original color pictorial wrappers. Wrappers edgeworn, chipped along spine. Text lightly tanned. In fair condition. Designated "10th Edition" on the titlepage. A program for Buffalo Bill's Wild West show, likely produced to coincide with the show's 1903 tour of Europe. All the advertisements are for British products, and the price of the program is six pence. The show performed at the Olympia Theatre, and the floor plan for the arena is given, as are instructions for travelling to the venue by rail. Most of the text is taken up by biographical information on Buffalo Bill and tales of thrills in the American West, but the official program for the British production is also given. The show began with the Star Spangled Banner and a procession by the "Rough Riders of the World" (led by Cody on horseback), followed by a Pony Express rider, "Western Prairie Girls," assorted Indians, cavalry veterans, and more, until finally Cody himself took the stage at the end of the first part of the show. The second half featured a recreation of the Battle of San Juan Hill, from the Spanish-American War. The program also takes care to note that "Colonel Cody uses Winchester Rifles and Winchester Ammunition exclusively in all his exhibitions." A nice artifact of the Wild West show at the height of its international fame, complete with Buffalo Bill's personal product endorsements, and a celebration of the American victory over the Spanish in Cuba.

ANS, 1p, 5 3/4" X 7 3/4", Philadelphia, PA, 1902 January 27. Very good. On his "Fourth & Library Streets" letterhead, Cooke complies with an autograph request in his large, bold, flamboyant script.

A History of the American People.

New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1902. First edition. Octavo, 5 volumes, red cloth, gilt titles to the spine, front panels, contains numerous plates and illustrations. Signed by President Wilson in volume one, "Woodrow Wilson, 31 March, 1905." In near fine condition. "Wilson wanted to enhance the presidency by establishing a direct link to the American people. He thought the president, as their spokesman, should be the preeminent leader of the democratic nation. Long convinced that the British parliamentary government was better than the American constitutional system, he exerted personal influence on the legislative branch in unprecedented ways...The first president to hold regular press conferences, he sought to shape public opinion by managing news from the White House. Moreover, he delivered messages personally to Congress, reviving a practice that George Washington and John Adams had used on a few occasions. From Jefferson through Taft, other U.S. presidents had submitted only written messages" (ANB). As a writer, Wilson "propounded his own frontier thesis to explain American history. Influenced by conversations and correspondence with historian Frederick Jackson Turner, Wilson now credited the frontier, more than the Anglo-Saxon heritage, with the rise of freedom and democracy in the New World" (ANB). "As a lecturer and writer Wilson had a genius for simplification, for the clarification of the complex and the explanation of the relation of things. These qualities he carried into his political speeches and they account in part, at least, for the effect he exercised upon men's minds" (DAB).

Broadside]: Harvard Illustrated Magazine Out Today

Harvard Illustrated Magazine, Cambridge 1902 - Broadside. Measuring 8" x 14". Printed in red and yellow on thin card stock. Modest age-toning and three tiny tack holes, near fine. Decorated with a very attractive illustration of the Egyptian goddess Isis, with wings spread over the word "Jan." presumably indicating the January issue. The illustration is signed in print "George Allan England '02" along with two Chinese(?) characters. England attended Harvard University, where he received Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees. However, he is better known as a socialist politician and writer; he was the author of several books of speculative fiction and science fiction, as well as collections of detective stories. His story, "The Thing from - 'Outside'", appeared in the first issue of the first science fiction magazine, Amazing Stories. In his day he was considered one of the closest rivals to Edgar Rice Burroughs. This advertising poster, exhibiting his artistic skill, is presumably very uncommon.

Previous owner's signature on title page upper right corner. Occasional illustrations by G. Lilian Bright throughout the book. A very good copy. Jewish-British cookbook published by two sisters, aimed at the wealthier audience. May Henry first published The Economical Jewish Cook in 1897. This was "a modern orthodox recipe book for young housekeepers". Following the success of that first publication Ms Henry teamed up with her sister, Kate Halford, to publish the offered work, which was intended to "cater for a class to which the other book did not appeal, by reason of the rigid economy necessary in recipes written primarily for Board School Cookery Classes." This book contains twelve Sample Menus - one for each month of the year, richer recipes arranged by food groups and a small chapter on Passover Cookery.         A Tale of Mishap].

Kushnerev for G. E. Lissner Moskva 1902 - Folio. 12 pp., with 5 large chromolithographed illustrations by Lissner. Publisher's pictorial wrappers; stamps of a Russian shop to lower wrapper; some light soiling and small marginal repairs. Lissner was a Russian painter and graphic artist who owned the printing press "E. Lissner and J. Roman" in Moscow. These illustrations, in the style of great Russian illustrator Ivan Yakovlevich Bilibin, were produced whilst he was studying at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in St Petersburg. These richly ornate illustrations depict scenes from a Russian folk tale, sometimes known as "Woe Bogotir", about a very poor man who has a rich merchant brother. One day the rich brother invites the man and his wife to his name-day party. However, at the party he forgets about them and they end up having nothing to eat or drink. On their way home the husband starts singing which invites "Woe" to visit him. Piece by piece "Woe" induces him to sell all his and then his wife's possessions and spend the money on drink. One day Woe takes him to a big stone in a field and tells the poor man to look underneath it. He finds a pit of gold and piles it up in a borrowed cart. He then tricks Woe into going underneath the stone and traps him there. With his new found wealth he becomes richer than his merchant brother. The brother is jealous and goes and releases Woe, hoping that he will make his brother poor again. However, Woe attaches himself to the merchant brother. Tempting him to drink the brother comes up with a plan to get rid of Woe. He suggests they play hide-and-seek and says that Woe would not be able to hide in such a small place as a cart wheel. Woe rises to the bait and so the brother wheels the cart into the river and Woe drowns. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Journal of the Calvert Scientific Exploring Expedition, 1896-7. Equipped at the Request and Expense of Albert F. Calvert ... for the Purpose of exploring the remaining Blanks of Australia

Perth, Government Printer, 1902. Foolscap folio, 62 pages with 4 illustrations plus a very large folding map (625 x 865 mm). Stapled as issued, without wrappers; trifling rust marks near the staples; a fine copy. Western Australian Parliamentary Paper Number 46 of 1902; only 1200 copies were printed. The 'expedition was fitted out to explore the remaining unknown regions of Australia on similar lines to the Elder expedition'. Lawrence Allen Wells, third in command on the ill-fated Elder expedition of 1891-92, was leader. The party set out from Mullewa, east of Geraldton, on 13 June 1896; lack of water and the gruelling conditions brought the official expedition to an end on 6 November at Noonkanbah Station on the Fitzroy River, with two men unaccounted for. It was not until late May of the following year that Wells located the bodies of the missing men (his cousin Charles Wells and George Lindsay Jones, nephew of the explorer David Lindsay). The detailed accounts of the three search expeditions undertaken by Wells (accompanied by Nat Buchanan, George Keartland and Sub-Inspector Ord respectively) are included. Not least, strong on contemporary race relations.

Personal photograph album with accompanying manuscript notebook. [Together with:] Manuscript notebook containing documentation for the album (both volumes numbered "2").

South Africa: August-October, 1902 - Square octavo album (205 x 167 mm): original grey-green cloth over bevelled boards; notebook: dark red paper wrappers. Album covers a little marked, a few tears to wrappers of notebook, otherwise in very good condition. 96 photographs (mostly 105 x 60 mm) window-mounted two to a page, drab green heavy stock card, linen tabs on thick card stubs; each photograph numbered in the album with a corresponding description in the diary. Fascinating, well-documented and vivid album of original photographs taken by a cavalry officer attached to a mounted infantry unit in South Africa after the conclusion of the Second Boer War (31 May 1902). Lieutenant Moncrieff was serving with number 4 troop, "C" squadron of the 12th Mounted Infantry, known as The Highland Company, and attached to the Seaforths. The notebook is informal and full of colourful detail of life in the field. Photograph number 1 shows Moncrieff posing casually outside a bell tent, riding crop under his arm, next to an image of his horse, a "typical Russian remount you have to dig your spurs in pretty hard to make them break into a trot"; his unit on parade ("at 12-45 the orderly trumpeter sounds the 'Feed', (which all the horses get to know 2 or 3 days after they arrive) whereupon they all together start neighing & squealing and 500 horses neighing at once make a considerable noise"; Boer prisoners of war at Beaufort West ("dirty & unkempt looking scoundrels"); another shows a Lieutenant Pawson and Moncrieff holding their cameras "as we were taking a mutual snapshot"); sports at Klerksdorp "a few days after peace was declared"; teams loaded up for the trek to Elandsfontein; arrival of the water cart in camp ("we often camped 2 miles from water, & when the water cart arrives, everyone stampedes to fill the cooking pots, black-drivers & privates, all mixed up"); regimental monkey and dog ("indispensable friends"); another officer (Captain Long) packing away his camera; bivouacs; the camp at Beaufort West ("it gives you an idea of the stones & dried up veldt you find there nice interesting country it looks, typical S. Africa"); picnicking near "Dielfontein Hospital" (actually Deelfontein), including an informal shot of "Col. Sloggett", later Sir Arthur Thomas Sloggett (1857-1929), surgeon-general to the RAMC; train loads of Boer prisoners ("returning up country for repatriation"); riding parties and other equestrian scenes; shots of pet dogs, monkeys and baboons, also "meir-cat & fox terrier"); fellow officers; the long trek across the Karoo; scenes six miles south of Worcester, Cape Colony; Hex River pass; "The Regt. Crossing the Buider River [Breede River] just before going through the Bain's Kloof Pass, it is this Drift that the 16th Lancers couldn't cross owing to the swollen state of the River"; Tweefontein; transporting wagons across river ("the men thoroughly appreciate it, you hear periodically roars of laughter from the bank"); trout hatcheries at Stellenbosch; four images of "Disembarking troops St Helena" - where Boer prisoners were held - showing men in slouch hats waiting in boats alongside a troop transport (the slouch hat came into widespread use during the Second Boer War); the album closes with "physical exercises aboard H. M. Transport Staffordshire". It is possible to trace Moncrieff's journey from Elandsfontein, just south of Johannesburg, south west, via Deelfontein and Beaufort West, to Worcester, near Cape Town – a trek of some 870 miles. Alaric Rimington (or Rimmington) Moncrieff was born in Kensington in March 1880, third son of Sir Alexander Moncrieff (1829-1906), army officer and engineer, who had served with the artillery during the siege of Sevastopol. After attending the Royal Military College, Moncrieff was gazetted to the Seaforth Highlanders and sent out to South Africa. According to Hart's Army List for 1906, he "served in the South African war 1899-1902, and took part in the advance on Kimberley, the operations in the Orange Free State from

Epistle of Peter Peregrinus of Maricourt to Sygerus of Foncaucourt, Soldier, concerning the Magnet. Translated by Silvanus P. Thompson. (Presentation copy, inscribed by Thompson to William Fletcher Barrett, F.R.S., 1844-1925, with an A.L.S.)

London: Chiswick Press, 1902. - First modern Edition in English of Epistolae de Magnete (1st Latin ed., 1269), hand-rubricated copy no. 77 of 250. Presentation copy, inscribed by Thompson to William Fletcher Barrett (1844-1925), offered with a one-page A.L.S. from Thompson to Barrett concerning another edition of Peregrinus' work. The translation is based on the printed Latin editions of 1448, 1868 and 1898, and on a manuscript version in Thompson's possession. 16 leaves; large hand-illuminated initial 'A'; hand-rubricated throughout in red and blue (colophon states 'Rubricated by T.T.', identified as T. Thomas in the accompanying bookseller's notation); 3 woodcuts printed in red ink. Original linen-backed printed boards. Wear to linen spine, leaving the sewing visible (it has the appearance of having been issued this way, almost like a sewn pamphlet, but I believe the stitching would have originally been covered by the linen). Else Very Good. 'The Epistola ranks as one of the most impressive scientific treatises of the Middle Ages. . Not only did Peregrinus bring together virtually all the relevant, contemporary knowledge on magnetism, but he obviously added to it and, of the greatest importance, organized the whole into a science of magnetism. He formulated rules for the determination of magnetic polarity, which then enabled him to enunciate rules for attraction and repulsion, all of which would today form the basis of an introductory lesson on magnetism' (D.S.B.). 'The thirteen chapters into which the letter is divided form the most original, extensive and important treatise on the magnet prior to Gilbert's De Magnete' (Wheeler Gift Catalogue 46c). Mottelay, Bibliographical History of Electricity and Magnetism, pp. 45–54. Inscribed: 'to my good friend:-/W. F. Barrett, F.R.S./with king regards-/Silv. P. Thompson Nov. 1906.' Barrett knew Faraday; in the Preface to his Michael Faraday (1872), J. H. Gladstone includes Barrett's fond recollections of Faraday. 'Barrett's dedication to pedagogical and charitable causes certainly help explain why, compared with such contemporaries as Lodge and S. P. Thompson, he published little original research . W. F. Barrett, 'On the luminosity of the magnetic field and of certain human beings', in L'état actuel des recherches psychique d'après les trauvaux des IIme Congrès International tenu à Varsovie en 1923 (Paris, 1924), 169–73, and Barrett to S. P. Thompson, 13 April [1910?], S. P. Thompson Papers, Imperial College Library, London, no. 24. This letter showed Barrett's interest in his friend S. P. Thompson's evidence for the effect that Lindsay and Varley failed to detect: Thompson, 'A physiological effect of an alternating magnetic field', Philosophical transactions, ser. B, lxxxii (1909–10), 396–8' (Richard Noakes, THE 'BRIDGE WHICH IS BETWEEN PHYSICAL AND PSYCHICAL RESEARCH': WILLIAM FLETCHER BARRETT, SENSITIVE FLAMES, AND SPIRITUALISM', Hist. Sci., xlii, 2004). '[Barrett]discovered Stalloy, a silicon-iron alloy used in electrical engineering. He also did research work on the divining rod, and helped found the Society for Psychical Research. Barrett was Professor of Physics at Dublin University' (Wikipedia). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
