Title THE WORKS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE. Edited by William Aldis Wright.

London: Macmillan 1902 - London and New York: Macmillan and Co., 1902-1905. A Finely Bound Set of Shakespeare SHAKESPEARE, William. William Aldis WRIGHT (editor). The Cambridge Shakespeare. Later edition (revised) of the Cambridge Shakespeare. Nine octavo volumes (8 3/8 x 5 5/8 inches; 213 x 144 mm.). Handsomely bound by Bumpus of Oxford (gilt stamp to the leather on the paste down) in three-quarter green calf ruled in gilt, over green marbled boards. Spines panelled and lettered in gilt with four gilt center tools, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. A fine set. Finely bound volumes in half leather with gilt decoration to the spines, marble paper pastedowns. William Aldis Wright (1831 - 1914), was an English writer and editor. The Works of William Shakespeare (1863-6), edited by William George Clark, with at first W. Aldis Wright and later John Glover as collaborators, was published in nine volumes by Macmillan, but printed at the University Press, so that it became known as the Cambridge Shakespeare. This important edition was based on a thorough collation of the four Folios and of all the Quarto editions of the separate plays, and of subsequent editions and commentaries (preface), so that in textual matters it constitutes a virtual variorum. Prefaces provide accounts of the early textual history of each of the works, and the volumes include the texts of first quartos of Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet, as well as the quartos relating to Henry V, The First Part of the Contention (2 Henry VI), and Richard Duke of York (3 Henry VI). Clark and Wright used the Cambridge edition as the basis for the influential one-volume Globe Shakespeare. Both the Cambridge and the Globe editions were revised in 1891 (The Oxford Companion to Shakespeare).     Condition Report Externally Spine – good condition – gilt titles to spine with some wear and marks to the raised bands.         The Tale of Peter Rabbit

[London privately printed): [London privately printed), February 1902 First (privately printed) edition, second printing. One of 200 copies printed. The first printing was issued in December 1901 in an edition of 250 copies. The Tale of Peter Rabbit was developed from a picture letter sent to Noel Moore on 4 September 1893. A few years later, Beatrix Potter thought it might make a small book. She contacted Moore to see if he had kept the letter and if she might borrow it back; the letter was then expanded into the book. Only when the manuscript had been turned down by several publishers and looked as if it might never be published did Potter turn to this private printing.

Autograph Letter Signed ("Jph. Conrad"), to James MacArthur of Harper's

Pent Farm, Stanford near Hythe, 1902. 8 pages. 8vo. On two bifolia of personal stationery; slight toning to first and terminal pages, horizontal fold. 8 pages. 8vo. "I am very sensible to your offer of hospitality in ... Harpers' publications" An important, unpublished letter in which Conrad discusses the recent publication of "Typhoon;" expresses dismay with its American publisher Putnam; mentions other works in progress; and, in offering a long story, initiates what would become a fruitful, decade-long relationship with the American publisher, Harper & Brothers, which saw the publication of Nostromo, The Secret Agent, and several other works. The letter is response to one from Harper's editor James MacArthur, who wrote on October 24, "'Typhoon' has stirred us mightily in the Harper establishment ... had I thought there was any chance of getting you away from Doubleday or McClure, I would have been after you like a shot. There is always an open door for you here, both in magazine and in book form. What about your next book? Could I have a chance at it? ... Meantime, we would like to have anything you can send in the short story...." Conrad's reply in the present letter reads, in part: "My dear MacArthur ... I heard great things of the efficiency of the Harper's House and was glad of it, knowing that you were working under its roof. The publication of Typhoon ... was a matter of arrangement between McClure, Pawling and Putnam with which I had nothing to do. I haven't even seen a single copy of the book, the Putnams not having had the simple civility of sending me one. 3 reviews (2 good and one indifferent) I have seen, but not the Harper's Weekly one. The story with 3 others shall appear here next spring with Heinemann's imprint. I've worked hard clearing up arrears. In a few days the vol of Youth and 2 other stories is coming out from the B[lack]woods House. Thus I have now worked out my engagement to that firm ... That volume shall be published on your side by McClure; but not before next spring. I assure you I am very sensible to your offer of hospitality in the pages of the Harpers' publications. I don't think that an occasional contribution would be any breach of my general understanding with McClure with whom I am on the best of terms. And in time a vol of stories could be made ready in that way for your imprint. But do you care for short stories? My next long book is engaged to McClure and Heine[mann] on a long standing agreement. 2/3ds of it are written. I think it will be done by March ... I think I may have soon a thing of 8000 words. Would that be too long for you?" MacArthur wrote in his reply of November 8, "By all means send along the 8000 words story. It's a bit longish, but then 'it's Conrad' ... Yes we care for a book of short stories if a novel is not forthcoming meantime. Don't let slip any chance of informing me when there will be a volume ready for publication." Thus began a relationship that must have exceeded the expectations of MacArthur and which resulted in the publication by Harper and Brothers of two of Conrad's most important novels--Nostromo (1904, Harper's publishing both the London and American editions) and The Secret Agent (1907)--as well as The Mirror of the Sea (1906); Under Western Eyes (1911); and Some Reminiscences (1912, published in America as A Personal Record). Several short stories also made their first appearance in the pages of Harper's Magazine during that period, including "The Informer" (December 1906); "An Anarchist" (August 1906); and "The Secret Sharer" (1910). Both of MacArthur's letters cited above are included in A Portrait in Letters: Correspondence to and about Conrad (1996), which notes: "Conrad's reply [i.e. the present letter] does not appear to have survived." MacArthur (1866-1909) had corresponded with Conrad in 1900 while he was living in London as the foreign representative of Doubleday, McClure, and Co., which that year published the American edition of Lord Jim. He joined Harper & Brothers when he returned to the U.S. in 1901. From 1894-1900 he had been an editor of The Bookman (New York) for which he had favorably reviewed Almayer's Folly in 1895.

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1902 - 1902 Original Hardback Wisden, Very Good Condition

1902. Hi, This lot is an 1902 Original Hardback Wisden. In Superb condition The first Hardback that Wisden produced was in 1896, this is the seventh year of the hardback and a year I have found hard to find recently, especially in this condition. The front board is very clean with excellent, extremely bright gilt, one tiny mark to the top, the rear board is near perfect and the spine gilt is very bright and original. The hinges are very strong and the yellow pastedowns in top condition and very bright yellow. The photoplate is very good and internally a nice clean book. As good as mine on my shelf. The only downside and it is a bit picky is there is a tiny indentation to the edge of the rear board where a band has been around it. A rare Wisden in superb condition (++) and a very nice price.

Valentiner was director of the Karlsruhe Observatory and a professor of astronomy at the University of Heidelburg. In 1874, Wilhelm Valentiner led a successful German expedition to Tschifu (China) to observe a solar eclipse. After the establishment of the "Grand Duchy Mountain Observatory" (today’s Heidelberg-Königstuhl State Observatory) in the year 1898 Valentiner was placed over the Department of Astrometry, which stood in competition with the Astrophysics Department under Max Wolf. Karl Wilhelm Friedrich Johann Valentiner (1845 - 1931), dt. Astronom. BUFFALO BILL'S WILD WEST AND CONGRESS OF ROUGH RIDERS OF THE WORLD

[London: Partington, 1902. [4],xiv,[3]-64,[xv]-xviii pp. Quarto. Original color pictorial wrappers. Wrappers edgeworn, chipped along spine. Text lightly tanned. In fair condition. Designated "10th Edition" on the titlepage. A program for Buffalo Bill's Wild West show, likely produced to coincide with the show's 1903 tour of Europe. All the advertisements are for British products, and the price of the program is six pence. The show performed at the Olympia Theatre, and the floor plan for the arena is given, as are instructions for travelling to the venue by rail. Most of the text is taken up by biographical information on Buffalo Bill and tales of thrills in the American West, but the official program for the British production is also given. The show began with the Star Spangled Banner and a procession by the "Rough Riders of the World" (led by Cody on horseback), followed by a Pony Express rider, "Western Prairie Girls," assorted Indians, cavalry veterans, and more, until finally Cody himself took the stage at the end of the first part of the show. The second half featured a recreation of the Battle of San Juan Hill, from the Spanish-American War. The program also takes care to note that "Colonel Cody uses Winchester Rifles and Winchester Ammunition exclusively in all his exhibitions." A nice artifact of the Wild West show at the height of its international fame, complete with Buffalo Bill's personal product endorsements, and a celebration of the American victory over the Spanish in Cuba.

The banker who founded Jay Cooke & Co. proved remarkably successful as a fiscal agent for the U.S. Treasury, selling far more government bonds than was thought possible; later he financed western railroad construction such as the Northern Pacific and mines in Utah. ANS, 1p, 5 3/4" X 7 3/4", Philadelphia, PA, 1902 January 27. Very good. On his "Fourth & Library Streets" letterhead, Cooke complies with an autograph request in his large, bold, flamboyant script. A very handsome piece.

A History of the American People.

New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1902. First edition. Octavo, 5 volumes, red cloth, gilt titles to the spine, front panels, contains numerous plates and illustrations. Signed by President Wilson in volume one, "Woodrow Wilson, 31 March, 1905." In near fine condition. "Wilson wanted to enhance the presidency by establishing a direct link to the American people. He thought the president, as their spokesman, should be the preeminent leader of the democratic nation. Long convinced that the British parliamentary government was better than the American constitutional system, he exerted personal influence on the legislative branch in unprecedented ways...The first president to hold regular press conferences, he sought to shape public opinion by managing news from the White House. Moreover, he delivered messages personally to Congress, reviving a practice that George Washington and John Adams had used on a few occasions. From Jefferson through Taft, other U.S. presidents had submitted only written messages" (ANB). As a writer, Wilson "propounded his own frontier thesis to explain American history. Influenced by conversations and correspondence with historian Frederick Jackson Turner, Wilson now credited the frontier, more than the Anglo-Saxon heritage, with the rise of freedom and democracy in the New World" (ANB). "As a lecturer and writer Wilson had a genius for simplification, for the clarification of the complex and the explanation of the relation of things. These qualities he carried into his political speeches and they account in part, at least, for the effect he exercised upon men's minds" (DAB).

Broadside]: Harvard Illustrated Magazine Out Today

Harvard Illustrated Magazine, Cambridge 1902 - Broadside. Measuring 8" x 14". Printed in red and yellow on thin card stock. Modest age-toning and three tiny tack holes, near fine. Decorated with a very attractive illustration of the Egyptian goddess Isis, with wings spread over the word "Jan." presumably indicating the January issue. The illustration is signed in print "George Allan England '02" along with two Chinese(?) characters. England attended Harvard University, where he received Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees. However, he is better known as a socialist politician and writer; he was the author of several books of speculative fiction and science fiction, as well as collections of detective stories. His story, "The Thing from - 'Outside'", appeared in the first issue of the first science fiction magazine, Amazing Stories. In his day he was considered one of the closest rivals to Edgar Rice Burroughs. This advertising poster, exhibiting his artistic skill, is presumably very uncommon.

Amerikanskie milliardery. S 16 portretami i prilozheniem stat'i Andr'iu Karnegi: Predubezhdeniia protiv trestov. Perevod s frantsuzskago pod redaksiei A. E. Ianovskago [American billionaires. With sixteen portraits and, as a supplement, Andre Carnegie's essay, "Popular Illusions about Trusts." Translated from the French and edited by A. E. Ianovskii]

XX Vek, St. Petersburg 1902 - Octavo (18.3 × 12.3 cm). Contemporary beige cloth; [4], 379 pp. Sixteen photographic portraits on separate leaves; numerous decorative head pieces and vignettes. Original wrappers perished; stamp of a non-existing lending library to title; else about very good. First and only edition of this sensationalist account of the life of American billionaires of the Gilded Age, supposedly written by a French journalist with exclusive access to the likes of Carnegie, Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, and Morgan. The supposed author -- according to the preface a former contributor to the journal 'Revue de revues' -- is likely a spurious pseudonym, as we have been unable to trace any French original with this title. The goal of the book is to expose the sheer power and inherent corruptness of the American financial and industrial elites, as demonstrated through descriptions of their business practices, but also their daily lives and intrigues. Chapters are devoted to the "first four hundred" and their families; to the daily life and psychology of the wives and daughters of America's richest; to their eccentricities and other gossip; as well as to their children and the system of lineage. Translated and edited by Abel' E. Ianovskii. The author is particularly critical of the practice of holding companies, or trusts, and the translator has here appended his Russian translation of Andrew Carnegie's essay, "Popular Illusions about Trusts" ("Predubezhdeniia protiv trestov"). Carnegie himself is the subject of the short chapter, "The Steel King." Complete, with all sixteen portraits. Rare; not traced through KVK or OCLC. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
