The Hound of The Baskervilles: Another Adventure of Sherlock Holmes

London: George Newnes, 1902 . Illustrated by Sidney Paget. First edition, first printing. Publisher's decorative red cloth binding designed by Alfred Garth Jones, with poster-style hound illustration in black and gilt to the front board, Art Nouveau decorative tooling to the front board and spine, lettered in gilt. An unusually fine copy, with only a hint of wear to the extremities, spine almost completely unfaded, bright gilt, a hint of spotting to the endpapers, otherwise bright and fresh pages. A bright and striking unsophisticated copy. Originally published serially in the Strand Magazine between August 1901 and April 1902, The Hound of the Baskervilles is Doyle's third novel to feature his detective character Sherlock Holmes. Like his previous two Holmes novels, The Hound of the Baskervilles is illustrated with black and white illustrations by Sidney Paget. The author had intended his second Holmes novel, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes (1894), which concludes with "The Final Problem, a story that ends with Holmes falling to his death at the Reichenbach Falls after fighting with his arch nemesis Professor Moriarty, to be the final appearance of Sherlock Holmes." After much public demand, Doyle revived his character with The Hound of the Baskervilles, the most popular of the Holmes cannon, which purports to be an episode earlier in the detective's career, chronologically prior to "The Final Problem." The story tells of a murder mystery at the Baskerville Hall country house that involves the Baskerville family's superstition surrounding a hellhound myth. The plot was largely inspired by Doyle's golfing holiday at Cromer in Norfolk in the spring of 1901, where he spent time with a young journalist friend named Bertram Fletcher Robinson, who told Doyle a legend about a haunting ghost hound in the moors of Dartmoor. The success of The Hound of the Baskervilles directly contributed to Doyle's resurrection of Holmes in The Return of Sherlock Holmes, in which Doyle explains how the master detective survived such an enormous fall. Alfred Garth Jones (1872-1955) was a British artist, illustrator, and book designer. Known primarily for his woodcuts, pen and ink line drawings, and watercolors, Jones' style is hallmarked by his bold, thick lines and his Art Nouveau aesthetic. Trained in both Manchester and Paris, Jones created many types of book art, including illustrations, bookplates, binding designs, and page decorations.. Illus. by Paget, Sidney; Jones, Alfred Garth. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Fine.

Autographed Letter Describing Dawson City and Its Inhabitants Dated September 1902

Dawson City 1902. () Very good. Original signed letter on 4 sheets of letterhead from Occidental Hotel in Skagway, Alaska. Writing on 6 of 8 pages. Two vertical and three horizontal folds. Some light edgewear and wear to folds. Top edge lightly age-toned. A fascinating letter, written in a clear, steady hand, wherein Mrs. Dubell relates her detailed impressions of Dawson City to a friend in New Jersey. Mrs. Dubell and her husband had recently moved to Dawson City, and Mrs. Dubell is clearly impressed and surprised by Dawson's relatively metropolitan feel. She writes: "I see as fine dressed ladies on the street here as you will see in any large city and I think I have seen the finest looking men here as I even saw." She also notes that the Presbyterian Church cost "80,000 to build... And the music is as good as you will hear in any church." Mrs. Dubell then describes her house across the river from Dawson and remarks that "in the evening the city looks fine all lighted up with electric lights." She also details the wonderful vegetables she can grow in her garden and relates a wedding she attended of a gentlemen who moved to Dawson 4 years ago (at the height of the Gold Rush) and who just brought his intended to Dawson from California days ago for the wedding. The Dubells ran a greenhouse service in Dawson which grew produce. All in all, a great letter with detailed observations of a young and bustling Dawson City..

Durch den Indischen Archipel. Eine Künstlerfahrt

Stuttgart: Deutsche Verlags-Anstalt, 1902. Quarto; profusely illustrated including eight tipped-in colour plates; fine in original bevelled gilt boards. A lavishly-illustrated deluxe publication of the Danish artist Hugo V. Pedersen's sketch-journal of his five-year journey through the East Indies. Pedersen was born in Copenhagen in 1870, and trained as an artist in Denmark and Germany. In the mid-1890s he sailed to Sumatra, and then on to Penang and Singapore, which is described and illustrated in detail. However the bulk of his stay was spent in the Dutch East Indies, which afforded him the material for most of the sketches in this work. Pedersen's drawings reflect his fascination with the exotic culture of the East.

The Life of a Bold AB on his Ship in the Rolling C

London: Dean & Son, circa, 1902. Small folio rag book with 16 illustrated pages; some fraying to edges otherwise in very good condition. First edition: an unusually good copy of this attractive children's book with a wonderful naval theme. Tall and well-printed, this copy has almost none of the unravelling or "cropping" sometimes seen in a work which dates from before the introduction of pinking shears to strengthen the edges of each page. This alphabet book is the first of Henry Samuel Dean's famous rag books. It was Dean who popularised the format in the early twentieth century as a perfect introduction to reading for small children, chiefly because the material was so sturdy and, indeed, washable. His success with the format led him to establish "Dean's Rag Book Company", initially exclusively making rag books, but later expanded to produce a variety of toys. The illustrator, Will Kidd, published several children's books, including Baa Baa Black Sheep, also published by Dean. Here, Kidd's theme is the British Navy at the turn of the twentieth-century. Although most of the pages give rollicking images of Jacks and Tars enjoying life on the "C", there is also an interesting depiction at "K for the King", a silouhette of Edward VII. A particularly good page accompanies "V for the Victory", the British flagship of the Battle of Trafalgar, here immortalised in the lines: "V for the Victory / A relic of the past, / Although her timbers may decay, / Her fame will ever last." Interestingly, OCLC only lists electronic copies of this rare title; copies of the third edition of 1903 are known at the British Library and the Bodleian.

Autograph letter signed in full to "Herr Levy"

. 2-1/3 pp. of a bifolium. Dated [Berlin]-Charlottenburg, January 23, 1902. In German (with transcription and translation). Regarding a recommendation for the director of the Berliner Tonkünstlerorchester, Herr Strunz, and mentioning Strauss's "Singgedicht," Feursnot. Strunz "is looking for some patrons enthusiastic about the arts who could help him materially... Is it very outrageous of me to bother you with this? Since, however, I myself, too, am only guided by purely artistic interest in this enterprise, to which I contribute the greatest sacrifices of time and effort myself, perhaps you will forgive me... I am going to travel to Vienna tomorrow for the premiere of my opera..."Creased at folds and very slightly overall; slightly defective at inner fold, with four small file holes to blank areas filled in with matching paper, slightly affecting several letters. . We have been unable to identify Strauss's correspondent with certainty, although it is possible that he is the German composer and patron of the arts, Martin Levy (1836-1911). The Berliner Tonkünstlerorchester, an ensemble devoted to contemporary music, was founded by Strauss. Feuersnot ("Fire-Famine"), a "Singgedicht" or "sung poem" in one act to a libretto by Ernst von Wolzogen, was first performed at the Hofoper in Dresden on November 21, 1901; it had its Viennese premiere on January 29, 1902. "Strauss’s second operatic essay was a ribald exercise in snook-cocking. His first opera Guntram had suffered a painful fiasco in Munich, his home town, and Feuersnot was his jovial revenge... That Feuersnot should be appreciated only by scholars was the last thing Strauss intended: for the sake of the dewily attractive, well-shaped score, there is a strong case for reinventing its text in terms as rudely up to date as need be." Peryshko Finista Yasna-Sokola [The Feather of Finist the Falcon]

St. Petersburg: The Department for the Production of State Documents [Expeditsii Zagotovleny Gosudarstvennukh], 1902. First Edition. Wraps. Very Good Plus. Hauntingly beautiful chromolithographic images by Ivan Biliban. 4to, measuring 32 by 26 cm, and 12 pp., featuring seven chromolithographs in addition to front cover and the rear cover vignette. Two of the chromos within are full page. In addition, there is the chromo decorative borders, very much a part of the integral whole. This work is part of a series of indigenous fairy tales the Russian government commissioned Bilibin to illustrate. To do so Bilibin paid meticulous care to actual traditional costume, architecture and decor. The work cemented Bilibin's renown, which was also built on stage design. The front cover is lightly soiled. Minor flake loss along the joint. Still a lovely copy.

Album of Original Watercolor and Ink Designs for Calendars from 1903 to 1907 Satan's Calendar. Life's Journey Calendar. Expectation's Calendar. Young Herchard Calendar.

1902-1906. Decorated Cloth. Very Good. Uncommonly clever, colorful manuscript calendar illustrations built around a theme for each of the years. Small folio. 31.5 by 26.5 cm. A total of 29 original watercolors, all dated and signed E.L.P.R. The identity of the artist is otherwise unknown and possibly irretrievable. What is manifest, however, is his skill, humor and panache, and these illustrations stand out among the fluent amateurs of the day, if amateur the artist in fact was. Some of the imagery is decidedly pre-Raphaelite in its style and modeling, while others are more suavely Fin-de-Siecle. Similarities can be found to Walter Crane, Kate Greenaway, Burne-Jones, Cecil Aldin, and a host of others, but never is this artist merely imitating. The 1904/1905 series, departing from the calendar format, feature full paintings meant to illustrate one word or short phrase captions such as "Declaration", "Osculation", "Vexation", and these qualify as polished, arresting works of art. The other years have mounted card sheets each covering two months. Typically there is a large watercolor in the center and for 1903, two small ink vignettes for each month. The other years simply present each month in the usual tabular format. These years also have lines of what is presumed to be an original narrative poem which carries through the particular year. The poem is commensurate with the illustration, and it reinforces the cumulative effect of the work. A number of the mounted cards have small neat holes on the top, clearly suggesting that the leaves were once hung on a wall and/or were bound together by a ribbon. Original decorative cloth album.
