THE WINGS OF THE DOVE

1902 - Westminster: Archibald Constable and Co., 1902. 16 pp undated ads. Original blind-stamped dark blue cloth. First English Edition, published nine days after the two-volume New York one. This is the memorably tragic tale of Millie Theale, an American girl caught up in the social circles of London and Venice. One of Henry James's better-known works, it was the basis for the 1997 Oscar-nominated film starring Helena Bonham Carter.~This copy does have the 16 pages of ads found in some but not all copies. It is a bright, near-fine copy (no external wear other than a few very faint marks on the rear cover); there's a faint damp-mark at the very bottom of the last few (ad) leaves, but the endpapers are intact and the only foxing is minor, on the edges of some leaves. Supino 56.4.0; Edel & Laurence A56b. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Golliwogg's Air-Ship

Longmans, Green & Co., London 1902 - 29 full page and one double page spread full colour illustrations plus smaller sepia illustrations on the other text pages. Story line follows Golliwogg and Sarah Jane, Peg, Meg and Midget as they build an airship, decide what clothes they should wear to fly in it and then take a rather calamitous journey. Wonderful example from the Golliwog series of books. Written by mother Bertha and illustrated by daughter Florence (1873-1922) who was born in the U.S. and worked in the U.K. There were 12 Golliwogg books written between 1896 - 1909, this is the 6th of those books. The word Golliwogg, which is no longer considered a socially acceptable word, originated from these books and is listed in the dictionary. Upton illustrated other children's books (see the Vege-men's Revenge for example) and was an accomplished artist, exhibiting at the Royal Academy, London. Condition: Binding: Corners worn, edges rubbed in parts. 3 small (1mm) holes in backstrip. The first quire is a bit loose but the overall binding is intact, as are the endpapers. There was a strip of tape between the first quire and the free front end paper, this has been removed. Interior: Very bright and clean. N.B. The photo may appear as if the cover has a stripe running vertically across the cover of the book, this is due to the fact the book was too wide for me to scan as one image and the photo is a merging of two files. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Eigenh. Brief mit U.

      O. O., 2. April 1902.. 3 SS. Gr.-4to.

First edition, first (and probably only) printing. Original thin tan cardboard wraps with an Edmund Dulac drawing and title design in dark brown on the front cover. The reverse of the half title page has this note "Cinq exemplaires de cet ouvrage tires a part sur japon sont hors commerce", while the half title page has a presentation inscription from Touny-Lerys (a pseudonym for Toulouse poet Marcel Marchand) dated 1908. The paper in this book is smooth and thick enough to be japon, but without another copy to compare one hesitates to claim this as one of the 5 copies not to be sold, although combined with the author's presentation inscription "a M Aubrie Leuf bien cordialement Touny-Lerys" it makes for a fairly compelling case. The pages are slightly tanned from age but are otherwise clean. The wrappers are covered with a complete tissue cover which is probably not original to the book, but except for very slight chips at the ends of the spine the very fragile covers are in exceptionally well preserved condition and thus were no doubt protected in some fashion. This, the first published work of literature containing Dulac's work, is a rare and elusive work cited by Hughie (#3) based on a copy of the cover only and thus with only an estimated (1901) date of publication and without further bibliographical information about the book itself ("The cover art by Dulac is probably the only work in the book by him. No date is known, but stylistically the work appears to be from his student days in Toulouse."). Dulac would have been 20 the year this publication appeared. Original green cloth gilt titles, no owner names or other markings. Faint age toning to the end papers and the title page. Title page small rough paper mark about 1/2". Six plates inserted - Frontis Frances Stewart at 72, Old Letters, Mr. Stewart, An early Sketch of Peterborough, Peterborough in Early Days and The Old Log House. A very nice copy of an uncommon title.Being Extracts from the Correspondence of the Late Frances Stewart. Compiled and Edited by Her Daughter E.S. Dunlop. Second edition, with much added correspondence added (first was in 1889). A scarce family copy of an important record of early settlement. , The Stewart's immigrated from Ireland to settle on the Otonabee River in Douro Township in 1822. The Stewarts were among the first European families to settle in the Peterborough- Lakefield region in the first half of the nineteenth century and to make a go of it; their neighbours included the Traills, Moodies, and Stricklands. "The book is full of the day-to-day life of the family, the way in which the children of the first generation suffered as they were drawn into the laborious life of the farm, the easing of strain with the coming of additional settlement (the founding of Peterborough in 1825), and the later scattering of the children to new and more settled homes." - Story, Oxford Companion to Canadian History and Literature. Dunlop, Eleanor (nee Stewart), 1819-1907, was the second daughter of Thomas and Frances Stewart. In 1845, "Ellen," as her close friend Catharine Parr Traill called her, married Charles Dunlop (1817-1906), a successful Otonabee farmer. Ellen, with Catharine's assistance, edited Frances Stewart's letters for Our Forest Home (Toronto, 1902

Autograph Letter Signed "C Bemont" [Charles Bemont, French scholar and autograph-collector] to unnamed correspondent [M. Kirkaldy, ref. to "Madame Kirkaldy" within], with Alfred Dreyfus calling card and autograph message and his own card with message

Printed heading 9 Rue du Condé 27 Oct 1902 - Four pages, 12mo (letter), all items in good condition. He will fulfil his promise of some autograph letters, "le plus notable et vivid", which had been relegated to the country but retrieved the day before. He describes a Michelet manuscript, notes taken "après la lecture d'un ouvrage de M. Dupanloup" before he became bishop. He discusses Dupanloup's character and achievements at length. He continues "J'ajoute une lettre . . . Saul Meyer [NOT present] et une carte de visite . . . adressée par le capitaine (ou ex-capitaine) Alfred Dreyfus, il y a un an environ, c'est à dire depuis qu'il a été remis en liberté". He then refers to "Madame Kirkaldy" [correspondent's wife presumably] perhaps being reminded by the autographs of the "bibliothécaire français" she met at the Bodley (Oxford) when she was expecting her third child. He recalls other Oxford experiences of the time (dining at Christ Church etc) and hopes for a meeting to "parler de vos Normands". WITH: Calling card of Alfred Dreyfus (name printed centre) with message under printed name in Dreyfus's hand, "remercie vivement Mr Bemont de som aimable proposition, mais il est inutile de faire faire un tirage a part de | [reverse of card] l'article, puisqu'il l'aura dans la Revue Historiques." Also with: Calling card of Bemont himself, with message [to M. Kirkaldy - another mention of Madame] in his hand, "22 déc. 1902. Cher Monsieur | Voici pour ajouter à votre collection d'autographs. C'est une lettre de grand peintre français, Jules Breton [NOT present] . . . [described, then promising more]". [Attributes: Soft Cover]
