        To Build a Fire [Scarce True First Publication]

      Boston: Perry Mason Company [Youth's Companion Magazine], 1902. First edition. Wrappers. Fine. A Fine copy of the exceedingly scarce first publication of Jack London's short story "To Build a Fire", published in the Youth's Companion Magazine for May 29, 1902, being the 1902 Memorial Day Number of the Magazine with the outer cover hosting a color illustration. This issue is in remarkable condition, showing a center fold line -as usual, and with the elegant cover showing a bit of spotting to the upper and lower right corners and a small name stamp to the right margin. Within, the pages are bright and rather crisp. This is the true first edition of this notable Jack London story about a man on the trail trying to survive in freezing weather, presented here in a juvenile version as fitting for this magazine. The work is considered by some to be the best-known of all of London's short stories. An expanded version of the story, the version known to most readers, was published in 1908. [In the 1902 version, the man suffers permanent frostbite damage, but survives. In the 1908 version, he perishes.] A Rare Fine copy of this true first edition and an excellent piece of Jack London ephemera.

        German Admiral's Guestbook, Containing Signatures of Navy Commanders, Aristocrats, Affluent and Important Visitors Who Came Onboard SMS Fürst Bismarck between 1895 and 1903, Signatures Number Over Seventy;

      China and Japan, 1902-1903. .....most date to German Occupation of the Southern Coast of the Shandong Peninsula under the Kiautschou Bay Concession, the Vast Majority Being Obtained in China and Japan. Guestbook come travel journal, kept by the wife of German Admiral and Squadron Chief Richard von Geissler, Commander of the S.M.S. Fürst Bismarck of the East Asia Cruiser Squadron, on which the writer accompanied him for one year. 8vo. 280 pages, plus 10 pages on double leafs inserted with string incorporated at the hinge. Initially assigned as a guestbook, the first 13 pages contain 71 signatures and some commentary by German notables and socialites, and 1 inscription in Chinese. Inversely, the manuscript account of a voyage to China and Japan comprises 277 pages in a neat hand. Quarter gilt tooled leather over intricately tooled floral brown cloth, original decorative endpapers, a beautiful binding by Heinrich Klüglein in Kiel. Slightly timeworn to spine and extremities, otherwise very good condition, internally clean. Richard von Geißler (1848-1922) was a highly respected Vice Admiral in the Kaiserliche Marine, or the German Imperial Navy, serving for a number of years as Fleet Commander of the East Asia Squadron, commanding the armoured cruiser SMS Fürst Bismarck from 1894-1903. Geissler was also instrumental in strategizing German cruiser warfare in Australian waters. In October 1902, during the voyage described in this volume, he presented to the German Admiralty, who emphatically believed that attacks on Australasian trade routes were feasible, would be successful and highly profitable, detailed directives for intelligence, operations, communications and supplies for cruisers at the Australia Station. Planning for several unique war scenarios, the plans were approved by the Kaiser in November 1903. This is the shipboard guestbook of Admiral Geissler, containing signatures of Navy commanders, aristocrats, affluent and important visitors who came onboard SMS Fürst Bismarck between 1895 and 1903. Signatures number over seventy; most date to German occupation of the southern coast of the Shandong Peninsula under the Kiautschou Bay Concession, the vast majority being obtained in China and Japan. The earliest signature in the volume was made at the home port, Kiel, 21 April 1895. The first being made in Asia was at Nagasaki 22 January 1901. In January 1902 Admiral Geissler's wife accompanied him on a voyage of long duration. Eager to journal her experience, he offered the guestbook in which she began to write from the opposite side. Guest signatures continued to be made in the now dual purpose volume. Significant autographs include the following: 18 January 1895: Signature of German surgeon Johannes Friedrich August von Esmarch (1823-1908), inventor of the surgical haemostasis bandage which is named after him, and authority on hospital management and military surgery. Also the signature of his wife, Princess Caroline Christiane Auguste Emilie Henriette Elisabeth of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg (1833-1917), also aunt of Empress Augusta Viktoria. 21 April 1895 in Kiel: Three signatures, one of which is of Rear Admiral Oscar Boeters (1848-1912), whom from 1884 was artillery director in Kiel, in 1887 commanded the SMS Gull on a voyage to Zanzibar, with explorer and colonist Carl Peterson onboard, and later obtained a doctorate in engineering. 19 June 1895: Signature of Admiral Karl Ferdinand Batsch (1831-1898), who in 1871 as Captain of the SMS Vineta (1863) made a two-year voyage to the West Indies, seizing in 1872 two Haitian Navy ships to coerce the Haitian government to pay a 20,000 thaler debt to a German businessman. 22 June 1895: a commander of the SMS Kaiserin Elisabeth 19 September 1896: Original signature of Alfred von Tirpitz (1849-1930), Grand Admiral, Secretary of State of the German Imperial Naval Office, the powerful administrative branch of the German Imperial Navy from 1897 until 1916. Involved in the strategic development of the navy, and the Kiautschou Bay concession to lease Chinese territory, at the time of this signature he was Rear Admiral and Head of the cruiser division in German East Asia Squadron. Signatures acquired in Asia are at Qingdao, Peking, Chefooo, Yokohama, and Nagasaki. Some of these include the following: 5 March 1902: Rupprecht or Rupert, the last Crown Prince of Bavaria (Kronprinz Rupprecht von Bayern 1869-1955). 7 December 1902: Grand Duke Cyril Vladimirovich of Russia (Kirill Vladimirovich Romanov 1876-1938), member of the Russian Imperial Family, Chief of Staff to the Russian Pacific Fleet, participant in the Russo-Japanese War, and Emperor and Autocrat of all the Russians. Captain T. von Hemman, previously a Lieutenant under Geissler on the SMS Fürst Bismark 13 December 1902: F.C. Erckert, possibly Captain Friedrich von Erckert (1869-1908), German officer in the Guard and Imperial Colonial Army, known as the "father of the camel rider troop" for introduction of dromedary camels in the cavalry. 5 March 1903: Bavarian general and diplomat Max, Count von Montgelas (1860-1938), who was the grandson of Maximilian von Montgelas, served in the Boxer Rebellion, was Military Attaché in Peking from 1901 to 1902, and wrote the controversial book "The Case for the Central Powers: An Impeachment of the Versailles Verdict". Also with the signature of his wife Pauline. 18 April 1903, aboard the SMS Fürst Bismarck: Admiral Gustav Bachmann (1860-1945), Chief of Staff for the East Asia Squadron Station. 25 April 1903: English Countess Grace Cecilie Lonsdale (1854-1941), née Lady Grace Gordon, the daughter of Charles Gordon, 10th Marquess of Huntly, who married Hugh Cecil Lowther, 5th Earl of Lonsdale in 1878. 8 November 1903: Dr. Friedrich Wilhelm Berthold Rinne (1863-1933), professor of mineralogy and petrography, founder of salt petrography.         Typed Letter Signed

      1902 - September 22 [1902]. Written to Mr. [William V.] Alexander, editor of Ladies Home Journal, who had requested a series of articles from Keller that were later published as The Story of My Life. Keller humbly thanks Alexander for payment for the last article; in part: "I only wish I could have made the story of my life more worthy of the generous praise it has received.It has meant a great deal in my life, and in Miss Sullivan's too -- the thought of the happiness that she says my compliance with your request has brought her is sweeter even than the thought of the kindness shown me in the letters that come constantly from old friends long silent and new friends whose words go to the heart." Two 5" x 8" pages, typed with blue ribbon and signed "Helen Keller." A very early letter by Keller, preceding her first book, with exceptionally good content. Fine. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

A handsome copy of a tricky book, lacking all of the usual damage (chipping to the front board decoration, flattening of the spine, fraying, horrendous bumping, possession by demons etc.) and instead being bright, clean and lovely to look at, a claim that cannot be shared by most books of its distinguished vintage. Most copies of the Hound of The Baskervilles (published in the same year) are considerably less well turned out. Packed with stories of lost tribes of Picts, bizarre behaviour by the otherwise respectable and a fair amount of feverishly guzzled brandy for purely medicinal purposes. Blanchard A13. Bleiler; Checklist of Fantastic Literature [13-319]
