"Richard Strauß und der Symbolismus". Eigenh. Manuskript mit U. O. O. u. D.

1902. 13 SS. auf 13 num. Bll. Folio.

The STEWART PATENT (CUT GEAR) HORSE CLIPPER. A Small Investment and Big Returns. CLIP YOUR HORSES

[Chicago Flexible Shaft Company] (n. d.), [Chicago] - Broadsheet, printed recto and verso. B/w engravings, b/w/red center illustration to recto. 36" x 23-3/4" An extraordinary piece of promotional literature for the Chicago Flexible Shaft Company, specialists in sheep-shearing and horse clipping equipment. The recto features a full-sheet ad for the company's 1902 Chicago Clipper, a hand-cranked version designed for individual use, while the verso offers two commercial versions (one ceiling-mounted, one electric) as well as a half-sheet advertisement for Clark Carriage Heaters, a coal-burning personal foot heater designed for use in automobiles. The ad on the recto in particular stresses the health benefits of clipping for horses as well as their owners, albeit in rather awkward prose and printing composition: "It's Taking Cold being put to bed in a nasty sweat that kills a horse. All Sorts of Pneumonia, Rheumatism and worse: Besides, Clipping saves three fourths of your currying and you can do it at least twice as thoroughly. That opens up the pores and Saves the Kidneys from overwork and disease." The high quality of the materials and the ease of operation also recieve extravagant praise: the machine is guaranteed for six years because "[w]e can afford to, for it's perfect" and is so easy to use that "A Child can turn the crank and not tire."John K. Stewart ultimately held over 80 patents, and the Stewart speedometer was used in the first Model Ts. In 1910 the Chicago Flexible Shaft Co. expanded into the home appliance market with an electric iron, under the brand name Sunbeam, which became a premier manufacturer of appliances; the company formally renamed itself Sunbeam Corporation in 1946, and is still in operation today.Rare. We find no copies on OCLC nor any in the trade. Fold lines; occasional creasing, minor soil and loss to edges, not interfering with text. Slightly rough left edge, suggesting the sheet may have been a fold-out advertisement in another publication at some point. About VG. Thin offwhite paper printed in black and red

        MY MUSICAL LIFE

London: Longmans, Green and Co, 1902. Sixth Impression. Publishers Cloth. Very Good. Caruso, Enrico (original self-portrait).. 8vo, publisher's blue cloth, gilt stamped decoration front and spine, 673p. + 40p. pub list. (Unrelated 1965 gift inscription verso ffe). Ownership copy of Tito Ricordi II, with his ownership signature upper left corner front fly dated by him 14.01.05 (January 14, 1905) with an original self-profile in ink by Caruso signed and dated by him 1908. Caruso ((1873-1921), the famous Italian-born tenor, was also a renowned caricaturist who made sketches of many famous people, but often of himself as mementoes to famous personalities or figures in the opera world. This self-portrait was apparently sketched for Tito Ricordi (1865-1933) heir to the historic music publishing company Casa Ricordi founded in 1808 by Tito's grandfather violinist Giovanni Ricordi. The Ricordi company repertoire represented one of the world's most important sources of opera and classical music; early in its history, the company purchased the music library of LaScala and published the works of Rossini, Bellini, Verdi and Puccini. The Ricordis were not only publishers but also impressarios of careers and fortunes in the opera world. This self-portrait presented by Caruso to the Ricordi heir represents an association between the major opera performer of the time and the major arbiter of opera culture and commerce of the period. $1,750.

London, The Army & Navy Co-Operative Society, 1902. Keine losen Beilagen. Scheint auch keine gegeben zu haben. RikSchrank Versand D: 5,00 EUR

Journal of the Calvert Scientific Exploring Expedition, 1896-7. Equipped at the Request and Expense of Albert F. Calvert . . . for the Purpose of exploring the remaining Blanks of Australia

Government Printer, Perth 1902 - Foolscap folio, 62 pages with 4 illustrations plus a very large folding map (625 x 865 mm). Stapled as issued, without wrappers; trifling rust marks near the staples; a fine copy. Western Australian Parliamentary Paper Number 46 of 1902; only 1200 copies were printed. The 'expedition was fitted out to explore the remaining unknown regions of Australia on similar lines to the Elder expedition'. Lawrence Allen Wells, third in command on the ill-fated Elder expedition of 1891-92, was leader. The party set out from Mullewa, east of Geraldton, on 13 June 1896; lack of water and the gruelling conditions brought the official expedition to an end on 6 November at Noonkanbah Station on the Fitzroy River, with two men unaccounted for. It was not until late May of the following year that Wells located the bodies of the missing men (his cousin Charles Wells and George Lindsay Jones, nephew of the explorer David Lindsay). The detailed accounts of the three search expeditions undertaken by Wells (accompanied by Nat Buchanan, George Keartland and Sub-Inspector Ord respectively) are included. Not least, strong on contemporary race relations. Please use the 'Ask Bookseller a Question' link below to confirm availability and postage charges. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

1902. 2 SS. auf gefalt. Doppelblatt (liniert). 8vo.

        THE TALE OF PETER RABBIT.

FIRST (privately printed) EDITION, Second printing, with minor alterations to the text. 12mo. ( 5.4 x 4.4 inches). One of only 200 copies printed. The first printing was issued in December 1901 in a edition of 250 copies. Original olive green boards pictorially stamped and titled in black to front cover. Spine rounded, as called for. Colour frontispiece and forty-one full-page black and white illustrations by Potter. Spine and edges a little rubbed and some light foxing to first couple of leaves but overall an excellent copy of this extremely rare edition. Previous owners bookplate (Henry Frederick [Thynne], 6th Marquess of Bath) on endpaper. Housed in a half green morocco solander box. ------ The tale of Peter Rabbit was developed from a picture letter sent by the Author to Noel Moore on September 4th 1893. A few years later, thinking that the story might make a small book, she contacted Moore to see if he had kept the letter and asked if she might borrow it back. Moore had, indeed, kept the letter and gladly returned it. Potter set about expanding the letter and developed the story, and illustrations, that were to become one of the most popular and famous childrens books of the twentieth century. Only when the manuscript had been turned down by several publishers and looked as if it might never be published did Potter turn to this private printing. The book was eventually commercially published by Frederick Warne in October 1902.

Cuchulain of Muirthemne: The Story of the Red Branch of Ulster arranged and put into English by Lady Gregory. With a Preface by W. B. Yeats.

first edition8vo.xx, 360, [2 (advts.)], [1 (printer's slug)]pp., blue cloth decoratively blocked and lettered in white, endpapers lightly foxed, very good to nice copy.WADE Yeats Bibliography, 256. In 1900, largely through Douglas Hyde's agitation to have Irish included in the curriculum, a Commission was appointed to investigate secondary education in Ireland. In its submission to the Commission Trinity came out against language and literature with Robert Atkinson, Trinity's authority on Celtic Studies testifying that the old literature of Ireland was isolated, "almost intolerably low in tone - I do not mean naughty, but low" and lacking in idealism and imagination. The Gaelic League was furious and approached Yeats to make an English translation which would reveal the poetry and dignity of the Irish epics. Yeats, through pressure of work was unable to do so and Lady Gregory offered to do the translation. Yeats hesitated, "seeing nothing in her past to fit her for the work" but he became enthusiastic when he saw a sample of her prose style, more enthusiastic than he was over anything else she ever did. Her two resulting books Cuchulain of Muirthemne and Gods and Fighting Men had an immense influence on Yeats for it was in Cuchulain of Muirthemne that he found the material for most of his early plays. Cuchulain of Muirthemne was the first rendering of Irish mythological history in an Irish idiom as Lady Gregory used the Anglo-Irish dialect of Kiltartan - actual peasant speech. "I have told the whole story in plain and simple words, in the same way my old nurse Mary Sheridan used to be telling stories from the Irish long ago and I a child at Roxborough". Of Cuchulain of Muirthemne Yeats wrote to Robert Bridges, "My friend Lady Gregory has made the most lovely translation, putting the old prose and verse, not into pedantic, 'hedge-school-master' style of her predecessors but into a musical caressing English which never goes far from the idiom of the people she knows well". Yeats contributed three pages of notes and a long and glowing preface to the book claiming it "the best that has come out of Ireland in my time" and her work would make it unnecessary for anyone "except now and then for a scientific purpose" to consult another text. In her dedication Lady Gregory stated her aim to be popularism, not scholarship and believed that her translation would be a first step towards going to the "fuller versions of the best scholars, and then to the manuscripts themselves". Cuchulain of Muirthemne and Gods and Fighting Men were very successful and went through several further editions before 1934. Maud Gonne said they were "a real joy to people like myself who were unable to read the old Irish texts and records". Synge told Yeats that he had found in Cuchulain of Muirthemne the dialect he had been trying to master and wrote to Lady Gregory, "Your 'Cuchulain of Muirthemne' is part of my daily bread". While books inscribed by Lady Gregory do turn up copies of her books inscribed to other writers of the Irish Literary Revival circles have effectively disappeared from commerce. W. K. Magee, who wrote under the pseudonym 'John Eglinton', was a highly regarded member of the Revival circle and the only one of its members to concentrate on the essay form. His centrality in Revival circles at that period is underlined by the fact that when the Yeats sisters established the Dun Emer (later Cuala) Press in 1903 the first authors decided upon for publication were W.B. Yeats, A.E., Douglas Hyde, John Eglinton and Lady Gregory (in that order). This is a wonderful association copy, inscribed in Irish "le meas mor" (ie. "with great esteem"), of what is probably her most important work.
