A Monograph of the Turdidae. Or Family of Thrushes (Two Volumes)

London: Henry Sotheran & Co., 1902 Magnificant work, featuring 149 tissue-guarded color plates after John G. Keulemans. Half-bound with pebbled leather over the spine and corners, and dark green cloth over boards. Raised spine bands with gilt stamped lettering and decoration. Top edges are gilded. Volume I with 336+ pages, plus first 79 plates and engraved portrait frontispiece. Volume II with 250 pages and the remaining 70 plates. Zimmer (page 570) states: "A thorough monograph of a limited section of the family Turdidae, comprising the genera Geocichla, Turdus, Merula and Mimocichla as recognized by the authors (a group usually further divided by most authors). Synonymy and a brief Latin diagnosis of each species are followed by detailed notes. Several new species are described. The hand-colored plates by Keulemans are excellent. Seebohm had most of the plates prepared but, at his death, left his manuscript unfinished. Sharpe undertook to edit and complete the work, but found that the manuscript in hand covered only the genus Geocichla, leaving the much greater portion still to be written; this was done entirely by Sharpe. Seebohm's text occupies pp. 1-91, excluding certain species of Geocichla in those pages which were written by Sharpe. The remainder of the work is Sharpe's, whose initials appear at the foot of each article contributed by him. The work was issued in 13 parts..." Leather covers show scuffs and a little rubbing along edges and joints, as well as a little over spine bands. There are also a couple of small and light scuffs on cloth covers. Both volumes remain tight and solid. Contents are generally very clean with no markings, book plates, etc. There are a few light and sporadic smudges in margins and blank spaces, and top edges are very slightly age toned. All plates are Near Fine to Fine with bright and stable color.. First Edition. Half Leather - Hardbound. Very Good/No Jacket. Illus. by John G. Keulemans. Imperial Quarto.

Printed in red and black throughout. Sm. 4to., original full limp vellum by the Doves Bindery, spine lettered in gilt. Regain'd is an extremely good, fresh and crisp copy, with only a slight scratch to the bottom of the spine, Lost has a dust-soiled top edge and a few creases and tiny marks but is fundamentally a good, bright copy. Paradise Regain'd has a remarkable inscription written by the printer Emery Walker on his 80th birthday in 1933 to Robert Catterson-Smith who was the principal of the Birmingham School of Art and who worked with Morris, Emery Walker and Burne-Jones on the Kelmscott Chaucer. Paradise Lost has a 1907 ownership inscription on the front free endpaper.

        THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES

1902. [a handsome copy] Another Adventure of Sherlock Holmes. London: George Newnes, 1902. Original red cloth decorated in gilt and black. First Edition of Doyle's famous full-length Sherlock Holmes novel, illustrated by Sidney Paget -- a tale Doyle himself termed "a real creeper." This was the first Sherlockian tale since Doyle had apparently killed Holmes off in "The Final Problem" of late 1893. However, since THE HOUND takes place chronologically before then, Doyle was not here officially "reviving" Holmes; this he would do the following year, when he wrote "The Adventure of the Empty House" -- which would be the first tale of THE RETURN OF SHERLOCK HOLMES in 1905.~This is an attractive, near-fine copy, very slightly rubbed but still quite bright; atypically, the leaves have very little foxing and the endpapers are intact. the front endpaper bears a signature dated 6 May 1902, six weeks after publication. Though THE HOUND was issued in considerable numbers, it is becoming difficult to find in truly advantageous condition. Green & Gibson A26a.
