Stuart's Atlas of the State of Maine Including Statistics and Descriptions of its History, Educational system, Geology, Railroads, Natural Resources, Summer Resorts and Manufacturing Interests.

J.H. Stuart & Co. South Paris, Maine. 1902-03. - Folio volume 18.5 x 15 inches; 108 pages with handcolored maps on pages 20, 27-96 (single and double page tipped-in), and two additional unnumbered double-page color maps. The large folding map of the state (pp. 1-4) is MISSING. Joints are broken but still attached by cloth, spine has been clumsily repaired with heavy paper which has disintegrated over time. There is a 2.5 inch abraded area along the cover's top edge; corners are bumped. An approximately 1.5 by 2.25 inch irregularly shaped stain to the front cover has penetrated the first 22 pp of the volume (the text section), gradually becoming smaller as it soaked through the pages until it is no longer visible. It appears as a small light spot (.5 inch circle) on only one map (Rail Road Map of Maine with Watershed Map of Maine on verso). There is a very light line of dampstaining to the lower right edge of the first pages, not affecting any text or map. Several areas of the Rail Road Map are marked by red pencil check marks. There are two tiny (.5 x .25 inch) spots in the margin of the map of Oxford county (#71). Overall the maps are in very good condition, clean and bright, with hand coloring. Two attractive double page Gray maps are at the rear of the volume (New Map of the United States and New Map of the World in Hemispheres) followed by a Directory of significant "Business Firms and Professional Men" to be found in Maine. Overall, a desirable item at an attractive price with contents chiefly in very good condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        L'Aube fraternelle.

A scarce family copy of an important record of early settlement. Ephemera included: Two family photographs pasted to front pastedown dated Christmas 1914 (perhaps descendants of Frances Stewart?). The Stewart's immigrated from Ireland to settle on the Otonabee River in Douro Township in 1822. The Stewarts were among the first European families to settle in the Peterborough- Lakefield region in the first half of the nineteenth century and to make a go of it; their neighbours included the Traills, Moodies, and Stricklands. "The book is full of the day-to-day life of the family, the way in which the children of the first generation suffered as they were drawn into the laborious life of the farm, the easing of strain with the coming of additional settlement (the founding of Peterborough in 1825), and the later scattering of the children to new and more settled homes." - Story, Oxford Companion to Canadian History and Literature. Dunlop, Eleanor (nee Stewart), 1819-1907, was the second daughter of Thomas and Frances Stewart. In 1845, "Ellen," as her close friend Catharine Parr Traill called her, married Charles Dunlop (1817-1906), a successful Otonabee farmer. Ellen, with Catharine's assistance, edited Frances Stewart's letters for Our Forest Home (Toronto, 1902).

Caspari, original pictorial wrappers printed in black, all edges untrimmed; original pictorial green cloth. front and spine panels stamped in black, all edges stained black, green endpapers. First edition. A utopian novel presenting a monistic world view. "In these books, Hart combined his own imaginative cultural history with attempts to present monism in the most broadly accessible and least offensive way. For example, unlike Wille and Bölsche, Hart was quick to discard the notion that human freedom is subject to the causal laws of nature. Rather, Hart suggested that causality itself is an illusion that disappears when one acquires the monist 'perspective of eternity.' With aim to replicate his Friedrichschlagen experience and to spread, in Wille's words, the 'Kameradschaft zwischen Kopfarbeitern und begabten Handarbeitern aber auch geistvollen Vertretern des Reichtums,' Hart was hard pressed to avoid political questions. In DER NEUE GOTT, he treated politics with disdain, scorning the politician as one who sees 'nur die engeren und beschränkteren politischen und sozialen Zustände vor Augen.'" - Eric Paul Jacobson, Cosmology to Ecology: The Monist World-view in Germany from 1770-1930, pp. 250. Julius Hart and his brother Heinrich were noted literary critics of their time who founded the "Neue Gemeinschaft" - "new community" - a neo-romantic circle of writers. Negley, Utopian Literature 526. Not in Bloch, Brandt, Lexikon or Nagl. Both volumes are in very good condition. KVK reports 11 copies. COPAC records 4 copies. From the collection of Arthur Hacker, Hong Kong author, artist, collector and historian. The photographer and compiler of this album, J.R. Macey appears to have been a junior officer on H.M.S. Blenheim while she was on the China Station (1901-2). H.M.S. Blenheim was sent to China to support the British position during the Boxer Rebellion. (Naval & Military Intelligence, 1901). The ninety five photographs in this collection show scenes from Amoy, Hong Kong, Mirs Bay [Tai Pang Wan or Dapeng Bay], Amoy (15 photos), the crew enjoying social activities ashore, portraits of officers and civilian European men and women, J.R. Macey and a friend dressed in Chinese clothes in a studio portrait and some scenes aboard ship. H.M.S. Blenheim visited Japan in June 1902 and fifty seven of the photographs show Japanese scenes, Japanese people or are views that appear likely to have been taken in Japan. The final four photographs appear to be have been taken in a British town or village. .
