Schönheit aus dem Feuer: Fliesenkunst aus acht Jahrhunderten von Wolfgang E. Weick und Gabriele Koller

Deutscher Kunstverlag.

Woman's Christian Temperance Union (W.C.T.U) meeting notes

Dallas, Texas, 1901. Unbound. Very good. Approximately 40 pages of meeting notes, from the Dallas chapter of the W.C.T.U. Rules from and two news clippings about the 17th Annual Convention are also included. All of the items are affixed to twelve unbound scrapbook pages. The meeting notes and rules sheet are in good shape; the news clippings are brittle. The meeting notes and minutes are generally generally concise, and often include members names. Many of the entries are procedural in nature, and several describe presentations, e.g. the testimonial of a long-suffering temperance worker who "had been laboring in Temperance work without the Lord but now [that] she had him on her side, had accomplished more for him and all others that she was working for." There is no discussion of suffrage, but other Union efforts are mentioned including: Pledge cards and new members, White membership ribbons , Temperance literature, Scientific temperance instruction, Loyal Temerance Legion (the W.C.T.U.'s children's branch), Flower Mission (the distribution of bouquets along with temperance literature and religious tracts to prisons, poor houses, hospitals, fire stations, jails, "colored people," etc), Fund raising (solicitation of donations from individuals and businesses, sales of Francis Willard -the W.C.T.U. founder-buttons, etc.), Lobbying state representatives in support of anti- tobacco, cocaine, morphine, and opium laws, Lobbying state representatives to establish a "Girls Educational Colage (sic)," Organizing a Humane Society in Dallas, Petitioning "the commissioner's court to have the White Females separated from the colored females," Petitioning to prevent the elected representative from Utah, Brigham. H. Thomas, from being allowed to take his seat in Congress because he was a practicing Mormon polygamist. Petitioning to abolish "beer and other intoxicants" from Army canteens , and Lobbying state representative to pass a law "to make the delivery of jugs a bonified sale, and to put the talk on them so high that there would be no whiskey sent that way to any local . . . district.

        The Lord of the Sea

London Grant Richards 1901 - 8vo. Publisher's tan cloth boards decorated and titled in black and red to front board and spine. Some light staining to front and rear boards, slight fraying and bumping to spine ends. Internally bright, fresh and clean. Ink ownership to front free endpaper. Front inner hinge starting. A very good copy. All very Shiel; kind of a melodramatic cross between Verne, lo-fi Poe, and Fleming. Untold riches salvaged from a meteorite enable a shadowy powerful chap to build giant floating fortresses to wrest control of the sea from the world's less visionary superpowers so that he can Nemo them into behaving with some sense of consequence. A well presented example of all that late 19th century "Peace through superior firepower" stuff that lasted right up until we actually saw what the superior firepower actually does when used. Shiel was without doubt one of the weirder writers of weird and speculative fiction, himself of multi ethnic heritage, he initially made a name for himself writing "Yellow Peril" fiction, a gig that was actually at the time specially commissioned to capitalise on West v. Far East paranoia and xenophobia and public interest in the mad scramble of Imperialist greed that resulted in the Boxer Rebellion and a number of other skirmishes and occupationary actions.to say that a lot of it (eventually published as The Yellow Danger in 1898) was what we would now view as gleefully racist would be something of an understatement. Like many writers of his era Shiel seems to have had a kind of post-Decadent obsession with racial integrity (which is both tragic and ironic considering his own heritage) and the desperately irritating concept of racial degeneration; his fiction is lush, elaborate and compelling, and very visibly a product of his contemporary social and artistic obsessions. When he wasn't writing what even he thought of as unworthy hack work, Shiel was capable of producing deeply visionary and sinister speculative fiction; The Lord of The Sea (originally plotted as "Notebook II" in Shiel's rather arcane system, suggesting a kind of 'Unified Fiction Theory' where his disparate works all play into each other, kind of a Moorcockian multiverse but with fewer bell bottoms), even read as a freestanding piece of fiction, is a fine example of his work. wtpc6 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Up From Slavery (Presentation copy)

New York: Doubleday, Page & Co, 1901. First edition. Very Good. Inscribed by the author: "To the Misses Stokes with kind wishes of Booker T. Washington. Feb. 14, 1902." Presented to Miss Caroline Phelps Stokes and her sister Olivia Phelps Stokes by the author on Valentine's Day, 1902. The Stokes sisters were well-known philanthropists from New York who were some of the early supporters of the author's school, the Tuskegee Institute. A very interesting association. Complete with the portrait frontispiece of the author with his facsimile signature. A Very Good copy with some minor wear to the spine ends, a small chip in the spine cloth and a light dampstain to the lower front board. A bit of foxing at the end papers and minor separation within the text block, but holding together and completely unrestored. Washington was born into slavery in 1856 in Virginia until he was emancipated at the close of the Civil War in 1865. After attending Hampton Institute and Wayland Seminary, he was chosen to head the Tuskegee Institute, where he remained until his death in 1915. Washington's political philosophy was generally one of non-confrontation, coupled with an emphasis on educating the African-American community, a philosophy of which his northern counterparts, most notably W.E.B. Dubois, were openly critical. "Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome..." ("Up From Slavery" p. 39). Very Good.
