Buddenbrooks. Verfall einer Familie. Roman. Erster und zweiter Band.

Fischer,, Berlin, 1901 - 2 Bde. Berlin, Fischer, 1901. 8°. 566, 539 S. OLwd. EA. WG II 3. Potempa D 1. - Priv. Widm. u. Besitzsign. a.

Some aeronautical experiments. Experiments in soaring flight. Journal issues.

1901-1903 1901 - Invention of the Airplane Wright, Wilbur (1867-1912). (1) Some aeronautical experiments. In Journal of the Western Society of Engineers 6 (1901): 489-510. (2) Experiments and observations in soaring flight. In Journal of the Western Society of Engineers 8 (1903): 400-417. Together two journal volumes. 222 x 145 mm. Library buckram, stamp of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on lower edge of 1903 volume. Very good apart from loose leaf in 1901 volume (not related to the Wright article). First Editions, journal issues. The first paper, "Some aeronautical experiments," was the Wright brothers’ first publication on aeronautics, and the work that first made their experiments with motorless gliders known to the world. The paper describes the brothers’ progress over three seasons of glider flight, during which they mastered the art of flight control and solved the problem of wing warp drag by the addition of a vertical rear rudder. Wright presented this paper to the Western Society of Engineers at the urging of Octave Chanute, who was to a large degree responsible for encouraging the Wright brothers’ early work; the paper is prefaced by some remarks by Chanute discussing the possibility of motorized flight using a new lightweight steam or gas engine. Wright’s second paper, "Experiments and observations in soaring flight," includes the first account of his and Orville’s attempts with motorized gliders. The brothers made their first powered flight (852 feet in 59 seconds) on 17 December 1903, six months after this report was read before the Western Society of Engineers. Of the work described in their second paper Wilbur later testified in 1912: "This was the first time in the history of the world that lateral balance had been achieved by adjusting wing tips to respectively different angles of incidence on the right and left sides. It was also the first time that a vertical vane had been used in combination with wing tips, adjustable to respectively different angles of incidence, in balancing and steering an aeroplane . . . We were the first to functionally employ a movable vertical tail in a flying aeroplane. We were the first to employ wings adjustable to respectively different angles of incidence in a flying aeroplane. We were the first to use the two in combination in a flying aeroplane" (quoted in Freudenthal, Flight into History: The Wright Brothers and the Air Age, p. 60). These were the key discoveries made by the Wrights. When they applied for a patent on their work it was on their system of control and stability in a glider. Their key patent did not concern motorized airplanes. Dibner 185. Gibbs-Smith, The Invention of the Aeroplane 1799-1909, pp. 37-40; 46-47. Norman 2266, 2267 (offprint issues).       N.p. ca. 1901. Brown gold-stamped album, oblong format 19 x. 14 cm., with 160 b.w. photos, string tied binding, very good. sharp un-faded images, clean condition. OBSCURE PHOTO SOURCE. PHOTOS BY A SAN FRANCISCO PHOTOGRAPHER, AMERICANS IN ASIA This is a album was made by the usual method of machine printed photo plates, in a high quality, at least for the time and period. * The fascinating record of U.S. soldiers in the Spanish-Amer- ican War [1900]. The album covers what appears to be a group of volunteers who left from the East coast of America and went to Puerto Rico, & Cuba, fighting all the way. It shows some gruesome executions, hangings and other battle-related scenes. The photographer seems to have accompanied the sold- iers from their arrival in Japan with photos of women there; and China on the way to the Philippines. The photographer, a man named J.D. Givens of San Francisco took photos recording the historic voyage and actions. He seems to have borrowed some high-light photos of women in Japan, executions and the the beheading and dismemberment of Boxer rebels in China ca. [1900]. *It begins with a photo of the Americans soldier's base Camp Stetsenberg near Mt. Ariat, Philippines. Campaign photos, death and destruction in the Philippines, superb photos of ethnic Philippine natives from various islands & cultur- es, semi-nude women and natives. The photos are mostly numb- ered and signed by Givens in the negative, in random order, and gaps in the numbers, but what is here seems to be a complete album recording the great event, as Givens follow- ed the action along with the G.I's. All in all, this is a very fascinating group of photos. An excellent record of the ethnic people and places the soldiers visited. One of the last photos is of a great & large groups of insurgent Filip- inos who surrender en masses to General F. D. Grant. The hanging of the worst offenders and the death of so many Fil- ipinos is recorded. An amazing insight to the actions of an early American war.       Tokyo 1901, Yamada Unsodo. Blue stiff stitched wrs., 4 vol.. set, 115 color plates, 29+29+30+28 double folded leaves, some. double-page,color woodblock printed on hand-made Washi paper. covers minor scuffing, contents exceptionally clean, bright.. A MAGNIFICIENT JAPANESE BOTANICAL REFERENCE A most brilliant and wonderful color botanical. The work was edited by Kono Seiko his heir posthumously. Bairei [1844-95] was a Kyoto artist & pupil of the Maruyama painter Nakajima Raisho, later studied under the Shijo master Shiokawa Bunrin and followed the Nanga school tradition under Nakanish Koeki & others. His work exhibits the charm and sensitivity of strong strokes in a traditional style. * The work illustrates 100 kinds of flowers in full color on full pages, each properly named. A majority are flowers in color, including fruit, orchids, wild grasses, and other flowering plants. A lovely & charming work, boldly printed in stunning full color. * The work was issued serially: the first part in 2 volumes in 1901 with title: SOHKA HYAKUSHU. The second part also in 2 volumes with "supplement" or "hen" added to the title SOHKA HYAKUSHU NIHEN, issued in 1903, in all the completed work consists of 4 volumes. It is not uncommon to find this separated into part I, part II, by those who don't know its a 4 volume set. There is also a binding variant, wherein part I is bound in one volume and part II also in one volume, lending to the confusion. It is easy to confuse this point if one is not careful in reading the title slip or the colophons. * The Japanese were truly experts at faithfully recording botanical books in "true-to-original colors found in nature. This work utilizes pastel vegetal colors, reflecting the essence of those colors actually found in nature. Bartlett has stated "Kono Bairei was one of the last of the artists who illustrated plants for wood-block printing and whose work is considered by critics as important." See Bartlett entry below, p.531 for this quotation. * TITLE: The official title recorded in the majority of reference books is KUSABANA HYAKUSHU, or KUSABANA HYAKU SHIKI [SHIKI used for the supplemental 2 volumes], with a variant reading of SOKA HYAKUSHU. * AUTHORSHIP/ARTIST: The work was illustrated by Kono Bairei. Because it was published posthumously and edited by his heir, Kono Seiko, some bibliographers wrongly attribute the work to Seiko, again, this simply contributes to confusion of authorship. * THE ARTIST: Kono Bairei [1844-1895], was a pupil of Nakajima Raisho [Maruyama school artist] and Shiokawa Bunrin, a Shijo school artist. He lived in Kyoto and was famous for his impromptu sketching or Sekijo. His pupils were Takeuchi Seiho [inquire with us for items by him], and a large number of others who were famous in their own right. See Mitchell below on p.14 for additional details, and a list of other titles by Bairei. Please inquire with us as we do try to keep other titles by him in stock. * Per Roberts: "Kono Bairei was a Japanese-style painter who lived in Kyoto. He was the first pupil of the Maruyama painter, Nakajima Raisho, later to become a Shijo artist under Shiokawa Bunrin and later a follower of the Nanga school. His bold style is full of strong brush strokes, traditional charm and sensitivity. He was especially adept at drawing and illustrating birds and flowers in the Kacho style..."         Great Irony! A book of " Good Cheer, " signed and owned by the infamous Lizzie Borden!

[Fall River, Massachusetts], July 19, 1901. 16mo.. "Her signature, ""L. A. B."" in pencil, adding ""July 19-1901,"" below, accomplished on the front blank flyleaf of a bound volume of Good Cheer: A Monthly Magazine for Cheerful Thinkers. (Boston: Forbes & Company, November 1900), Vol. 1, 192 pp., 16mo, bound in green paper boards with tan cloth spine titled in black type. With several additional light pencil highlights on several pages within. Some light wear to corners, pages clean.A most ironic association piece in light of the volume's previous owner?"one that's driven home in a poem by Fred Emerson Brooks, entitled the ""Whistling Boy,"" (page 39) which offers the following observation: ""You will never find a criminal behind an honest smile."" Several passages are highlighted in the margin in pencil, presumably by Borden herself. One poem, on page 17 entitled, ""It is Better,"" reminds the reader to: ""Keep a smile on your lips; it is betterTo joyfully, hopefully try For the end you would gain then to fetter Your life with a moan and a sigh. There are clouds in the firmament ever The beauty of heaven to mar, Yet night so profound there is never But somewhere is shining a star."" Considering the social ostracism Borden endured following her sensational 1893 murder trial, poems like these perhaps offered some measure of comfort. Another passage, on page 45, is also highlighted in pencil: ""'BLUES' are the soggy calms that comeTo make our spirits mope,And steal the breeze of promise fromThe shining sails of hope.""Page 49 offers similar solace: ""Though life is made up of mere bubbles,'T is better than many aver,For while we've a whole lot of troubles,The most of them never occur.""In light of her infamy, Borden was an animal lover, and upon her death in 1927 she left $30,000 to the Fall River Animal Rescue League. Another highlighted passage offers a hint as to her attitude toward animals (p. 79): ""He knows he should be kind to dumb creatures, but he notes that his father drives horses with docked tails and over-head check-reins, that he shoots deer, that he cases a little fox with a pack of noisy hounds, and that his mother wears a stuffed bird on her Sunday bonnet.""Of course, Lizzie is better known from this most familiar rhyme recited at the time of her 1892 murder trial (and afterwards after she was acquitted): ""Lizzie Borden took an axe / And gave her mother forty whacks. / When she saw what she had done, / She gave her father forty-one.""Anything signed by Lizzie Borden is extremely rare. In 2003, a signed copy of a book owned by her sold for $6,000. Only three ALsS signed by her have sold at auction in the last 25 years, the latest bringing over $8,000."

VIEWS OF THE NORTH CHINA AFFAIR. [Photographed During the Boxer Rebellion, 1900]

Tokio 1901, Yamamoto. Oblong album, color pictorial stiff. wrs., purple silk ties, mild/faint center fold, a remarkably. clean, bright copy, 58p., 40 large photos 26.5 x 20 cm., 21. smaller photos ca. 12.5 x 8.5 cm., album size 39 x 26.5 cm.. STUNNING PHOTOS OF FOREIGN TROOPS OCCUPYING BEIJING PALACE with a total of 114 b.w. photogravures. *** THIS IS A VERY RARE BOOK, WORLDCAT ONLY LOCATES 3 COPIES ! * THE BOXER UPRISING 1900 This work documents the results of the Boxer Uprising of 1899-1900, where in anti-foreign sentiments reached a boiling point. Several foreigners were killed, mostly missionaries, later when foreign embassies were besieged some diplomats were also killed. This resulted in the combined efforts of these foreign countries who teamed up to suppress this rebellion. This rebellion was mostly limited to North China where it began in Shandong province under German control and spread Westward across Northern China through Beijing. * This work shows historic photographs of the foreign troops occupying Beijing [Peking], China. Good photographs of these troops in and around the Forbidden City, namely those from Japan, Russia, France, America, and Germany. * What makes this graphic work important, is that it shows a good part of the Palace and other Forbidden City buildings as the were before the troops actually damaged or pillaged these historic sights. Each country garrisoned their troops in a select group of old buildings, hither to unseen by commoners and especially never by any foreigner. It is a superb look at the inner world of the Emperor of China. * THE PHOTOGRAPHER: Yamamoto Sanshichiro was a Meiji era photographer, born in 1855 in Okayama [Japan]. From 1882 to about 1897 he had a photographic studio in Tokyo. Later when news of the Boxer Rebellion swept the world, he quickly went to Peking to photograph the historic activities of foreign troops in the capitol, including the Japanese. After photographing the aftermath in Peking, he finally settled down in Tianjin and opened his third photographic studio. * CONDITION: This work is truly an excellent copy, externally and internally. There is a very tiny bit of edge wear at the lower right [a tiny chip loss] and upper left front corners. The purple silk ties are bright, solid and very clean. There is a very slight hint of where this book was probably lightly folded in half but not hard and there is a mild hint remaining. From about the middle onwards there is not much evidence of this at all. By and large, we feel this work is an excellent copy. There is NO damp or other condition issues with this item. Overall exceptionally clean and solid throughout. This is a very RARE book has seldom been found let alone in such lovely condition. A REMARKABLE COPY ! See photographs posted to our website from this copy. * RARITY: Worldcat only locates three copies in the world. This is indeed a very RARE book ! See reference below for more information. * BIBLIOGRAPHY: The author/photographer was noted for photographing and publishing two other superb photographic books on China: "Peking" published in 1906, and his stunning "View and Custom of North China" in 1909. * EDITION: This is the FIRST and ONLY SMALL EDITION of this book. * REFERENCE: Please see worldcat: r/oclc/25266060&referer=brief_results * Yamamoto Sanshichiro is amazingly NOT FOUND in any of the 3 Terry BENNETT books: .       Hong Kong n.d. ca 1901-1903, Sternberg. Two excellent views,. a.Sternberg 55.6 x 8.6 cm.,b.w.collotype photo,3 mild folds;. b.a Japanese photo by "G N," no other markings; hand-colored. 56 x 9 cm., 3 mild folds. Both excellent, as issued. R A R E. SUPERB EARLY VIEWS OF HONG KONG ISLAND & KOWLOON This is a pair of period Hong Kong & Kowloon panoramic views. The works are undated, but from the very primitive look of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon and the New Territories, we believe this to be circa 1901-1903 based on the undeveloped look of Hong Kong. These views look to be just after those held by Cambridge University, with a circa date of 1900. See below for the citation. . The first was sold by Sternberg shows a grand panoramic view from Hong Kong island looking towards Kowloon and adjacent areas. The whole view from West Point to the far eastern side of the bay and Hong Kong island and the mainland in the background. Kowloon is a small village with little beyond it. In the background of Kowloon are the lower mountains, and the final mountains on the mainland of China. . The second view is taken from the opposite side of the harbor, on the Kowloon side showing Hong Kong Island. This shows the extreme west end of Hong Kong, to the extreme east end of the island. There is a very minor build-up of buildings mostly along the water's edge. Very little in the way of buildings from the mid-level to the peak areas. An early, primitive view of Hong Kong. *** THE TWO PANORAMIC VIEWS: . a. Sternberg: title caption: HONGKONG HARBOUR. This has captions above stating from the left: West Point, Stonecutter's Island, Cricket Ground New Naval Docks, Kowloon. Black and white collotype photograph. . The verso states Post Card. Union Postale Universelle. Published by ". Sternberg, Stationer & bookseller, Pictorial Post Card a Dealer, 68 Queen's Rd. Central, Hong Kong, "lower right corner the number: "2580." . Condition: This is an unused, excellent example, hinges intact, three mild folds, no cracking or hinge tears, image clear, solid, no fading. * b. G N. [publisher's name], most likely a Japanese item, title caption: VIEW OF HONGKONG, FROM THE SEA. Hand-colored collotype photograph. . The verso states "Post Card," with "G N" in the small square at upper right where the postage stamp would be affixed. Front has the title caption. . Condition: This is an unused, excellent example, hinges intact, three mild folds, no cracking or hinge tears, image clear, solid, no fading. Delicately & tastefully hand-tinted with pastel colors. * *** RARITY: These kinds of early panoramic & photographic views of Hong Kong and Kowloon are especially RARE. There are incomplete examples of three cards which do show up, but those lack a card on either end, as these were always complete in a group of four contiguous cards. Finding the complete group of four is difficult. The view of Kowloon is especially RARE and seldom found. By and large the majority of cards show Hong Kong island. Those showing Kowloon seldom show up on the market. . Collectors and historians especially covet the pair of cards showing complete views of both Hong Kong and Kowloon. . *** SPECIAL SHIPPING TERMS: These are very long items. In order to preserve & keep the excellent condition of the folds or bends intact, we do not plan to fold or bend these items for shipping. We will rather ship them in their full length of ca. 56+ cm. If this results in an additional shipping cost, we expect the buyer to appreciate the concept that folding these items is NOT RECOMMENDED, and can possibly cause damage by flat folding. !! By ordering you accept these special shipping terms.!! . ***** REFERENCE: M. Sternberg, Hong Kong, was a bookseller and stationer who was also a major wholesaler and retailer of postcards depicting views and types of Honk Kong. His cards were printed as black & white and hand-d collotypes. These cards were titled in English for an English audience and sold through a number of shops. . * EARLY VIEWS OF HONG KONG & KNOWLOON: /?tag=scenic-views * Color scans can be sent by email. 18000 gr. Schlagworte: Religion - christlicheGeschichte - allgemein [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Sons,. 1901. original blue-green cloth, front panel stamped in white, spine panel stamped in gold.. Cloth a bit crimped at spine ends, remnant of a printed label on. front paste-down, endpapers slightly darkened (much less than usual),. a nearly fine, bright copy. A very scarce book. (#149742). First edition, later issue with inserted publisher's catalogue dated "2/02" "THE END OF AN EPOCH is a great plague story whose protagonist, Adam Godwin, has the experiences which often parallel (literally and allegorically) those of Shiel's Adam Jefferson." - Stableford, Scientific Romance in Britain 1890-1950, p. 136. "M. P. Shiel claimed, without citing names, that after a publisher rejected the manuscript of his THE PURPLE CLOUD, it published a plagiaristic version of the story. This is probably the book in question, for the author would seem to have read Shiel's story. I would not consider the relationship strong enough to constitute plagiarism, though, for Green handled the general situation in an original manner. The incident, if such exists, suggests that Green was in some way associated with BLACKWOOD'S. Of the two novels, Shiel's, with its brilliance and vision, is the better, but THE END OF AN EPOCH is not discreditable, and we regret that A. Lincoln Green, whoever he was, wrote no more." - Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 919. Clarke, Tale of the Future (1978), p. 27. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 95. Bleiler (1978), p. 86.         A Honeymoon in Space. 1901 First Edition

London : C. Arthur Pearson, Ltd., 1901 Better than Good, about Very Good. See description and scans. London: C. Arthur Pearson, Ltd., 1901. First Edition of George Griffith's rare early space opera science fiction classic, 'A Honeymoon in Space'. Octavo, green cloth boards with black, gray and white imprinting and illustration at front cover and spine; 8 illustration plates by Stanley Wood and Harold Piffard; top edge dyed; 302 numbered pp. + 1 pp. with recto bearing Gresham Press / Unwin imprint, verso blank; + 8 leaves ads (16 pp., being numbered 1 - 8 and 1 - 8). Fading at bottom half of cover cloth; spine darkening (scan); stain at lower right corner, rear cover; trasnparent old stain at front endpapers; front hinge starting. Remarkably quite free of foxing, and there is no writing anywhere. Notably better than Good, but with a bit too much color loss from the cloth of the binding, at places, to merit a solitary "Very" before the Good. About Very Good, -ish. See scans. They're worth a thousand words. A very early - and very scarce - classic of what would become the kind of science fiction most loved by those who know what it is; oddly influential on diverse later adventures in the arts, but which mostly has something at its heart which is also at ours. Do some research. A very hard to find First, soon enough to be impossible. Please see scans. L18n
