Lebensrad.

Kanten gering berieben, ansonsten bemerkenswert wohlerhaltenes Exemplar.

Sir Thomas Lawrence, With a Catalogue of the Artist's Exhibited and Engraved Works

Paris / New York: Goupil & Co., Jean Boussoud, Manzi, Joyant & Co., Successor, 1900. Limited Edition. Leather. Near Fine. Lawrence, Thomas. Elephant Folio - over 15 - 23" tall. 191 p. Limited edition of 200 copies, this no. 66, specially bound in full leather by Bickers & Son, London.Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) remains one of the most renowned portrait painters of the Regency period. A child prodigy, at the age of 10 he was supporting his family with his portraits. He received his first royal commission, a portrait of Queen Charlotte, in 1790 (at the age of 21) and remained the most sought-after portrait painter in Britain for the next forty years. In a recent (2010) retrospective exhibit of Lawrence's work, it was said of him that "he [was] one of the great painters of the last 250 years and one of the great stars of portraiture on a European stage".This superb volume presents 65 of Lawrence's portraits done in Aquatint photogravure, with two of them hand-coloured, with a life of the artist and a catalogue of his work.***DESCRIPTION: Custom bound by Bickers & Son, London in full green morocco, both the front and back boards have a decorative ruled border in gilt, raised bands on the spine, gilt lettering and decorations on the spine, top edge gilt, sewn headbands in cranberry, blue and ivory, inner gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers in shades of olive green, grey and ivory, limitation statement on the verso of the half-title page, this copy no. LXVI of CC, tissue-guarded hand-coloured frontispiece of Emily, Countess of Glengall, title page in brown and black with publisher's device in the center, many initial capital letters set in a decorative square using brown ink, Preface and life of Lawrence by Lord Ronald Sutherland Gower, Trustee of the National Portrait Gallery, photogravures bound in throughout the text with almost all of them being presented both in sepia and grey tones, all with lettered tissue guards, original ribbon marker still present, Table of Contents at the end followed by the List of Illustrations; large folio in size (approximately 15.25" tall), pagination: (i-iii) includes the half-title, limitation and title pages, blank (iv), (i)- iv includes the Preface, 1-97 includes the life of Lawrence, 98 is blank, (99)-176 being the Catalogue, (177)-181 the Table of Contents and List of Illustrations, blank (182), Printer's Statement (183) stating the text and plates were printed near Paris in 1899 - note that pagination excludes the plates.***CONDITION: Volume is overall in near fine condition, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, straight corners with a minimum of rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings. Due to the book's weight the front joint is just beginning to crack, but the thickness of the boards means it is on the outer surface only and the board is firmly attached, as is the rear board; there is one scrape to the leather on the front board and extremely minor overall edgewear; the spine has sunned to a brownish-green. Internally there is some offset darkening to the free endpapers from the gilt inner dentelles and the book has a very faint musty odor.***POSTAGE: Please note that due to the size and weight of this work additional postage may apply; we are happy to ship at cost to both domestic and international addresses, please contact us for details.***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         Dichter (1875-1926): Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Schmargendorf bei Berlin, 13. III. 1900. - 8°. 1 ½ S. a. Doppelblatt.

Photo Album]: Nainital India Summer Resort 1890s

India 1900 - Oblong quarto. Measuring 10" x 11". Brown leather with gilt detail. A collection of 23 sepia toned photographs measuring between 4.5" x 6" and 6" x 8", some with captions, as well as one postcard. Photographs are very good or better with some waviness and faint spotting in a very good minus album with worn corners, a page detached but present, and lacking the spine. A photo album depicting the summer retreat of Nainital, India, located in the lake district of Uttarakhand near the mountain of Nanda Devi Massif, during the 1890s. The album shows the trip up to the region with large photos of the Indian landscape showing the lakes and mountains of Nainital. There are photos of British tourists at the resort, complete with handwritten captions identifying each person in the group photo, as well as native Indians and the Nainital bazaar. These photos were taken after the town was rebuilt in the 1880s after falling victim to a "landslip." Not only is the region known for its natural beauty and as a way to beat the brutal Indian summer, it is also renowned for its prestigious educational institutions, one of which is shown here captioned as "Girl's School in Nainital." A modest but interesting collection of a British summer holiday in the mountains of India with relatively large images.

Leipzig and Berlin: Cosmos 1900 - First edition. First livraison only (of four). Folio. vi, 68 pp. Publisher's russet cloth backed portfolio, printed text to the upper cover, flaps detached but present, the text block in plain card wrappers. 27 magnificent large photographic plates of contemporary architectural subjects captioned with the name of the architect to the lower right corner. Published in four livraisons between 1900 and 1902, predating Muthesius' most famous architectural survey "Das Englische Haus" - the first edition of which appeared in 1904-5. Providing a wonderful record of British buildings built in the late years of the 19th century, this first part roughly comprises the opening third of the text and the first quarter of the illustrations of the full complement. The photographic subjects include interiors and exteriors of several London private residences, but also workers' homes in Port Sunlight and public buildings such as offices, shops, educational establishments and libraries in places such as Newark, Glasgow, Leicester, Birmingham and Chester.         Speeches and Addresses of William McKinley.

New York: Doubleday & McClure, 1900. First edition. Octavo, presentation binding original three quarters leather. Signed and inscribed on the first free end page in black ink as president, "For Hon. Elihu Root, with sincere regards, William McKinley." The recipient Elihu Root served as the Secretary of War under both McKinley andRoosevelt. He moved frequently between high-level appointed government positions in Washington, D.C.and private-sector legal practice in New York City. For that reason, he is sometimes considered to be the prototype of the 20th century political "wise man," advising presidents on a range of foreign and domestic issues. He was elected by the state legislature as a U.S. Senator from New York and served one term, 1909-1915. Alfred McCoy argues that Root was the first "foreign policy grandmaster" in American history, and that Root more than any other figure is responsible for transforming America into a world power. According to McCoy, Root devoted his time as Secretary of State and as a Senator to ensuring that the United States would have a consistent presence in world affairs, and Root helped to establish the Special Relationship between the United States and Great Britain. Root helped to ensure that powerful business interests and the intellectual elite supported an interventionist foreign policy. Root was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1912 as a result of his work to bring nations together through arbitration and cooperation. A remarkable association copy. William McKinley was the 25th President of the United States, serving from March 4, 1897, until his assassination in September 1901, six months into his second term. McKinley led the United States in the Spanish-American War, raised protective tariffs to promote American industry, and maintained the nation on the gold standard in a rejection of inflationary proposals.

        Right Whale, (Plate 65).

Vienna: Gerold & Son, ca. 1900. Color lithograph. I just love this image - the happy old fellow cavorting in Arctic seas, with no idea of the trouble he's about to encounter. Gerold & Son were an old Austrian printing firm. Between 1880 and the 1920s they produced "Hartinger's Wall Plates for the Education in Natural History," a series of zoological and botanical chromolithographs designed for educational use in schools. This delightful image by Joseph Fleischmann shows a right whale, floating impossibly high in the water (for educational reasons, I'm sure) with a whale boat bearing down and the mother ship in the distance. As befits its subject, the lithograph is huge, measuring 28 x 38 1/2 inches. Very good condition.

        Fleurs des champs

1900 - - s.d. [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Lithograph laminated on cardboard. About 1900. It is part of a series of four symbolic female representations, called Flowers , which includes Flowers of the Mountain, Flowers of the Fields, Flowers of Water and Flowers of Greenhouse . Signed lower right in the stone. According to watercolors exhibited at the Salon des Artistes from 1893 to 1941. Elisabeth Sonrel, born in 1874 in Tours, studied at the Beaux-Arts in Paris in the studio of the painter Jules Lefebvre. An artist with Symbolist affinities, she draws her inspiration from Renaissance painting, notably in the style of Botticelli for this series as well as for the series Seasons . Realized in a typically Art Nouveau style, the Flowers are part of a trend inherited from the pre-Raphaelites of the second half of the 19th century, who like to represent the woman against a backdrop of luxuriant vegetation. The curved lines that frame the representation blend in with the abundant floral decoration, and the silhouette, an allegory dressed in the antique style, is detached from a rural landscape surrounded by daisies, blueberries, gold buttons and yarrow. This type of lithographic series ( Flowers, Seasons) played a decisive role in the spread of Art Nouveau, and the graphic arts of that contemporary were declined in posters, almanacs and newspapers.         Photo Album]: Turn-of-the-Century California

California 1900 - Oblong quarto. Measuring 10" x 13". String-tied blue cloth album with "Photographs" stamped in gilt on the front board. A collection of 111 sepia-toned photos measuring between 1.5" x 2" and 5" x 8" without captions. Fine with about fine photographs affixed to stiff gray paper. A photo album compiled at the turn of the century in various places in California via San Francisco, Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Catalina Island. The album shows snapshots of well-dressed ladies and gentleman exploring California with train rides, boating, and beach visits, complete with sun hats and parasols, as well as photos of men at a shooting range. The pictures seem to be taken by a talented amateur photographer who posed friends. Photos include those of ladies playing guitar and mandolin, the group posing while applying makeup, combing a man's hair, and shaving another man's face, and one risque photo of two young ladies, one of whom is revealing a finely turned ankle. There are also group photos of people posing by cliffs and in wooded areas. One photo shows two men posing on rocks on a beach in front of an enormous boulder which reads "Lash's Bitters" (probably for the company based out of San Francisco owned by pharmacists John Spieker and Tito Lash who claimed; "Lash's Bitters is a prominent medicine, claiming to cure Biliousness, Malaria, Dyspepsia, Indigestion, Headache, Sour Stomach, Neuralgia, Back Pain, and all afflictions of the Kidney and Liver.") There are also two photos of the San Francisco restaurant, The Cliff House, which overlooks Ocean Beach, a typical destination for the upper crust. An extensive collection of better than usual quality snapshots detailing upper middle class life in California at the turn of the century. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
