Zur Theorie des Gesetzes der Energieverteilung im Normalspectrum.

Leipzig: Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1900. First edition of the first appearance of Planck's revolutionary quantum theory, arguably the most important development in twentieth-century physics. "In this important paper [Planck] stated that energy flowed not in continuous, indefinitely divisible currents, but in pulses or bursts of action [or quanta]" (Dibner). This hypothesis "contradicted the mechanics of Newton and the electromagnetics of Faraday and Maxwell. Moreover it challenged the notion of the continuity of nature" (PMM). In this paper Planck uses his eponymous constant h, the quantum of action, to explain the observed distribution of energy as a function of frequency in the radiation emitted by a black body. Although Planck's new theory was initially resisted by many in the scientific community, it gained acceptance after Einstein used the constant h to explain the photoelectric effect in 1905, and after Niels Bohr applied it in 1913 to explain the spectrum of the hydrogen atom. The importance of quantum theory is impossible to overstate: it not only revolutionized theoretical physics, but also technology and hence everyday life: modern inventions based on quantum theory include the laser, the transistor, the electron microscope, and magnetic resonance imaging - the entire electronics industry is based on it. "In 1859-60 [Gustav] Kirchhoff had defined a blackbody as an object that reemits all of the radiant energy incident upon it; i.e., it is a perfect emitter and absorber of radiation. There was, therefore, something absolute about blackbody radiation, and by the 1890s various experimental and theoretical attempts had been made to determine its spectral energy distribution--the curve displaying how much radiant energy is emitted at different frequencies for a given temperature of the blackbody. Planck was particularly attracted to the formula found in 1896 by his colleague Wilhelm Wien at the Physikalisch-Technische Reichsanstalt (PTR) in Berlin-Charlottenburg, and he subsequently made a series of attempts to derive "Wien's law" on the basis of the second law of thermodynamics. By October 1900, however, other colleagues at the PTR, the experimentalists Otto Richard Lummer, Ernst Pringsheim, Heinrich Rubens, and Ferdinand Kurlbaum, had found definite indications that Wien's law, while valid at high frequencies, broke down completely at low frequencies. "Planck learned of these results just before a meeting of the German Physical Society on October 19 [1900]. He knew how the entropy of the radiation had to depend mathematically upon its energy in the high-frequency region if Wien's law held there. He also saw what this dependence had to be in the low-frequency region in order to reproduce the experimental results there. Planck guessed, therefore, that he should try to combine these two expressions in the simplest way possible, and to transform the result into a formula relating the energy of the radiation to its frequency. "The result, which is known as Planck's radiation law, was hailed as indisputably correct. To Planck, however, it was simply a guess, a "lucky intuition." If it was to be taken seriously, it had to be derived somehow from first principles. That was the task to which Planck immediately directed his energies, and by December 14, 1900, he had succeeded--but at great cost. To achieve his goal, Planck found that he had to relinquish one of his own most cherished beliefs, that the second law of thermodynamics was an absolute law of nature. Instead he had to embrace Ludwig Boltzmann's interpretation, that the second law was a statistical law. In addition, Planck had to assume that the oscillators comprising the blackbody and re-emitting the radiant energy incident upon them could not absorb this energy continuously but only in discrete amounts, in quanta of energy; only by statistically distributing these quanta, each containing an amount of energy hν proportional to its frequency ν, over all of the oscillators present in the blackbody, could Planck derive the formula he had hit upon two months earlier. He adduced additional evidence for the importance of his formula by using it to evaluate the constant h (his value was 6.55 × 10−27 erg-second, close to the modern value of 6.626 × 10−27 erg-second), as well as the so-called Boltzmann constant (the fundamental constant in kinetic theory and statistical mechanics), Avogadro's number, and the charge of the electron. As time went on physicists recognized ever more clearly that--because Planck's constant was not zero but had a small but finite value--the microphysical world, the world of atomic dimensions, could not in principle be described by ordinary classical mechanics. A profound revolution in physical theory was in the making. "Planck's concept of energy quanta, in other words, conflicted fundamentally with all past physical theory. He was driven to introduce it strictly by the force of his logic; he was, as one historian put it, a reluctant revolutionary. Indeed, it was years before the far-reaching consequences of Planck's achievement were generally recognized, and in this Einstein played a central role. In 1905, independently of Planck's work, Einstein argued that under certain circumstances radiant energy itself seemed to consist of quanta (light quanta, later called photons), and in 1907 he showed the generality of the quantum hypothesis by using it to interpret the temperature dependence of the specific heats of solids. In 1909 Einstein introduced the wave-particle duality into physics. In October 1911 Planck and Einstein were among the group of prominent physicists who attended the first Solvay conference in Brussels. The discussions there stimulated Henri Poincaré to provide a mathematical proof that Planck's radiation law necessarily required the introduction of quanta--a proof that converted James Jeans and others into supporters of the quantum theory. In 1913 Niels Bohr also contributed greatly to its establishment through his quantum theory of the hydrogen atom. Ironically, Planck himself was one of the last to struggle for a return to classical theory, a stance he later regarded not with regret but as a means by which he had thoroughly convinced himself of the necessity of the quantum theory. Opposition to Einstein's radical light quantum hypothesis of 1905 persisted until after the discovery of the Compton effect in 1922. "Planck was 42 years old in 1900 when he made the famous discovery that in 1918 won him the Nobel Prize for Physics and that brought him many other honours. It is not surprising that he subsequently made no discoveries of comparable importance. Nevertheless, he continued to contribute at a high level to various branches of optics, thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, physical chemistry, and other fields. He was also the first prominent physicist to champion Einstein's special theory of relativity (1905)" (Britannica). "Planck had the physical interpretation of his radiation law in hand before the middle of November 1900, but he presented his results first at the meeting of the German Physical Society in Berlin on 14 December 1900 in a contribution entitled 'Zur Theorie des Gesetzes der Energieverteilung im Normalspectrum' ('On the Theory of the Law of Energy Distribution in Normal Spectrum'). In this contribution he outlined in short 'the most essential point of the whole theory as clearly as possible' (p. 238) ... In his Atombau und Spektrallinien (1919), Arnold Sommerfeld called 14 December 1900 the 'birthday of quantum theory' ('Geburtstag der Quantentheorie', p. 213). He referred in particular to the fact which Planck had considered to be the 'most essential point' of his derivation of the blackbody radiation law: namely, the assumption that the energy is distributed among the cavity resonators only in integral multiples of finite energy elements ... Planck himself continued with his attempts to deepen the theoretical foundations and to elucidate the physical interpretation of his theory of blackbody radiation. In a paper, which he submitted to Annalen der Physik in January 1901 ['Über das Gesetz der Energieverteilung im Normalspectrum,' 4 Folge, 4 Band, pp. 553-563], Planck again presented the theoretical derivation of his radiation formula, introducing certain changes in his earlier treatment" (Mehra & Rechenberg, pp. 50-53).         Salesman's Sampler Album for Chromolithographic Transferware Decals

      - N.d., circa 1900. Folio, 42 by 29.5 cm. 108 leaves, nine of which are folding, containing hundreds of samples of ceramic transferware. The decals include flowers and bouquets, fruits, picturesque views (buildings, panoramas, bucolic settings, harbors, etc.), Chinoiserie imagery, human studies (lovely young maidens, seraphs, children, animals (birds and horses), ornaments (Rococo, geometric, Art Nouveau). These various categories are mostly grouped separately, notwithstanding the frequent overlap (animal studies will have a floral element, the views might be framed with ornament, etc.) The final section shows various decals on a brown or black background which heightens the visual impact of the decals. These decals are generally the more elaborate and/or more spectacular ones, and in this section, there is no particular subject category order as far as we can discern. Many of these, perhaps two-thirds, are identical in terms of their imagery, to chromolithographic die-cuts of the period, except here the samples are not die-cuts but rather impressed onto the sheets. The rest are transfer images that one might also see on furniture but are definitively not of a more general decorative usability -- they are not what one might find on greeting or trade cards of the period. The decals are of varying size, and the pages range from a single decal to up to 13, with the majority of pages having one or two and but for a small number of pages, there are four or less per page. Each of the decals is accompanied by a printed stamp with a stock number (which is inked). From this we know the source of the album was a German company, probably one based in Bavaria, which was known for its high level of chromolithography, but we can't unfortunately identify the specific enterprise. Lifting of the surface to some of the decals, with loss to the imagery of those decals affected as part of the color is transferred to the tissue guard. This affects only a small percentage of the decals, and never is there a complete loss, but rather, merely a flattening of the color in these images. Some of the tissue guards are sticking to the underlying leaves, or there is a general stickiness to guards, thus resulting in the aforementioned instances of lifting. One page has a small cut-out, which we assume was done to remove a single decal. Some paper loss to the cover pastedown. Overall, this remains an exciting, extraordinary collection of transferware ornament and decoration from around 1900. Hardcover. Cloth spine. Patterned paper pastedown on boards.         Fleurs de serre

      - environ, 26,8x59cm, une feuille. - Litografia laminato a cartoni. 1900.

Through the First Antarctic Night 1898–1899. A Narrative of the Voyage of the "Belgica" among Newly Discovered Lands and over an Unknown Sea about the South Pole.

London: William Heinemann, 1900 - Octavo. Original pale blue cloth, gilt lettered spine, lettered and with pictorial block in white on front cover. Spine rolled and lightly sunned. An excellent copy. Coloured frontispiece, 3 other coloured plates, 74 half-tone plates and numerous illustrations to the text. First edition. Cook had previously travelled as surgeon and anthropologist on Peary's second expedition to Greenland - and had fallen out with the leader over his treatment of the Inuit and his subordinates - when he joined the Belgian Antarctic Expedition in a similar capacity. When the expedition became trapped in the ice after crossing the Antarctic Circle, "Cook soon proved the most invaluable of the scientists, devising an antiscorbutic diet and observing some of the curious physical and mental effects caused by the absence of sunlight. He devised a crude form of light therapy to treat what is now commonly known as seasonal affective disorder, alleviating the condition by placing the afflicted crew members before an open fire" (Howgego).       - N.p. ca. 1900-1915. Black lacquer Japanese accordion album 34.5 x 27.5 cm., 4 post cards per page side,51 cards in all, very good, solid, mounted under threads, silk painted pages, cloth spine, some small chips to corners else solid. RARE ! *** *** *** . . . COLLECTION OF 51 EARLY KOREAN PICTORIAL POSTCARDS . . . BEAUTIFULLY CONTAINED IN A PERIOD JAPANESE LACQUER ALBUM . * This is an amazing and superb collection of fifty-one period black & white collotype photo postcards. Each card is slipped under orange threads to hold them in place, the last 4 cards inside the back cover are held down with old silver photo corners. . *** THE SUBJECTS: This collection was probably compiled by a Japanese who was working or visiting Chosen, Japan held Korea. The probable dates of the postcards range from about 1900-a dated post mark of 1912. . The collection covers some great rarities. A double-postcard panoramic view of Seoul, followed by other "bird's-eye views of Seoul, [Japanese] Governor-General's Residence, other government buildings, palace views, temples, gates, pagodas, main streets, parks, prostitute quarter, Keisang beauty, and a good number of women, girls, priest, dress, common people, itinerant sellers, street stalls, sellers, occupations, rural views, the Chosen Hotel & Korean Nobleman. . *** THE ALBUM. The album is black lacquer over wooden boards, typical of the turn-of-the-century -1920's type album. This one is however, very special, in that the thick pages are all silk gauze covered, and then color painted with lovely floral and other designs, then four threads are sewn in place to hold the corners of the postcards. The album has cloth covered pages that match the end coverings. It appears that a new spine of cloth was done at some time. The cover design sows a Japanese Rickshaw man pulling a Japanese woman in a rickshaw before a large Mt. Fuji. All of the painting is done in gold against a back background, with some touches of red to enhance here and there. The faces of the two people are "mother-of-pearl" and the man's face is complete and nice, while the woman passenger in the rickshaw has some loss and about half is present. . *** CONDITION OF THE LACQUER ALBUM: The album corners have lack some lacquer, and there are a few small cracks or bumps and scuffs to the front cover. The back cover has a few small pieces missing from the corners, back by and large in very nice condition. See also above "THE ALBUM" for other condition comments. . *** HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THE JAPANESE OCCUPATION OF KOREA: In 1910, an already militarily occupied Korea was a forced party to the Japan-Korea Annexation Treaty. The treaty was signed by Lee Wan-Yong, who was given the General Power of Attorney by the Emperor. However, the Emperor is said to have not actually ratified the treaty according to Yi Tae-jin. There is a long dispute whether this treaty was legal or illegal due to its signing under duress, threat of force and bribes. . Korean resistance to the brutal Japanese occupation was manifested in the nonviolent March 1st Movement of 1919, during which 7,000 demonstrators were killed by Japanese police and military. The Korean liberation movement also spread to neighboring Manchuria and Siberia. . *** THE POSTCARDS: Captions in both English & Japanese, found inside of the " " marks, where these marks are absent, there was no caption. . 1. "VIEW OF SEOUL" A very rare double-panoramic black & white photo postcard, showing the old city, with just a few larger buildings, the balance are small houses, the center fold is intact which is quite RARE and unusual to find in such excellent condition. Being a double card, we count this as two cards. . 2. "BIRD'S EYE VEIW OF KEIJI CITY" . 3. "BIRD'S-EYES VIEW ON SEOUL" . 4. "BIRD'S EYE VIEW OF KEIJI CITY" . 5. "MAIN STREET. SEOUL" . 6 "TOKUSON MOHANJO OF GOVENOR GENERAL" . 7 "THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL OFFICE CHOSEN" . 8. "THE KOREAN GOVERNMENT GENERAL OFFICE, SEOUL" . 9. "KOREAN-GOVERNMENT, KEIJO" .

      - China n.d. ca. 1900-1901. 3/4 Gilt-stamped leather over buff cloth, very good, 25 x 29 cm., 30p., 26p. with photos, 2 per side = total of 104 photographs,16 x 11 cm., all very clean, albumen type, bit of fading, but clear, strong images. RARE! This is a wonderful and quite rare album. It shows the German contingent sent to China to join in the defense of foreign embassies in Peking during the 1900 uprising of the siege of the Boxers. The work begins with the group aboard the S.S. Strassburg from Bremen, and their landing in the German colony of Tsingtao, Tsingtau. From there, it was a long trek down to Peking in the snowy winter. Classic photos posed for the camera & history [4 in all]. Arrival in China with more classic poses of the German troops before Chinese sights and in a temple where they were stationed. One shows large wooden cases of their supplies stacked up in the temple garden with the commanders posing for a lovely memor- ial photos. Well taken photographs by the group's photograp- hic officer, nicely composed and carefully taken, these are NOT tourist snap shots ! These average two photos per page. * A group of German military men pose before a wide variety of Chinese pagodas and sights, some in long capes, spiked helmets, with Chinese officials ! Their arrival in Peking during a heavy snowfall in 1900 is documented by a series of superb & rare photographs from the Summer Palace where the lake is frozen ! Magnificent but frozen Peking sights, architectural views, palaces, Germans on the move with horse and carts through the snow as they deployment on orders to defend the foreign legations. Inside a legation taking lunch [tiffin]; outside two or three Chinese Boxers were executed hands bound they lay face down in the snow. More photos of travel along the way, wonderful Chinese scenery & buildings, architecture, snowed in barracks, their visit to the Great Wall in the dead of winter with snow sprinkled all over, a passage through Chinese villages and towns with long columns of German troops. One comic and lovely image of a German dressed in Chinese clothes, another in a Chinese garden. A German celebration, Chinese and German open-air trial where the accused Chinese are on their knees before a magistrate, Germans playing badminton, leisure time in a garden, soldiers packing medical supplies on horses, and German headquarters &c. * PEKING: A lovely series of photos showing the great sites of Peking and the Imperial Palace, large battalion of German soldiers on parade, another shows them marching to a great hall, destruction of Chinese buildings, superb views of fine Chinese architecture, lakes, bridges, bas-reliefs, the Great Buddha with soldiers taking a memorial snap shot. A fascina- ting photo of "Coal Hill" and stunning panoramic bird's eye view of the Forbidden City. Interiors of the Forbidden city, Temple of Heaven, Emperor's throne, the great walled city, Germans guarding Chinese buildings, Japanese Embassy, Chine- ese gates and walls showing Chinese children saluting a German officer. Magnificent temples and Fu-dogs, Germans playing tourists taking commemorative photos before many great sights. Fascinating photographs of ordinary Chinese who mug for the German camera with a German officer standing in the background, pagodas, Chinese officials, and photos of the German cemetery with tribute paid to fallen comrades. Huge temple guardians, stone bride & others. * A final pair of photos grace the last page the upper shows a large contingent of Germans on parade as they are reviewed by their officers on horse-back, the lower shows them aboard a train, in preparations for departure back to Germany, thus ending the album. The remaining five pages are blank. * This album is an excellent example of the German contingent in China during the historic Boxer Rebellion [1900-1901]. It is also a primary record of what they did, where they went, acting as tourists during free moments. Recording photos of the great and small

        Sailing Alone Around the World.

The Century Co, New York 1900 - First edition of "the finest single-handed adventure story yet written" (Seafarer). Octavo, original blue cloth. Pictorially stamped in silver and green, top edge gilt. Signed by author on the half-title page with a particularly nice inscription, "You must then know that you know the sea" Joshua Slocum onboard the Spray The Pan American Exposition Aug 29th 1901." In very good condition with rubbing and wear to the spine tips, contemporary inscription above Slocum's. Illustrated by Thomas Fogarty and George Varian. Sailing Alone Around the World was published by Century Company in 1900. The sailing memoir records Slocum's amusing experience as the first person to sail around the world alone. National Fisherman called it "[a] literary gem, adroitly and engagingly written," but interest extends beyond mere sea-aficionados. Excitement for the voyage was universal, and Slocum was awaited by admirers at his ports. To these he gave popular lectures and lantern-slide shows upon his arrival, including the English writers Edwin Arnold and Arthur Ransome. The memoir was first published in installments before its popularity became such that it was issued in lavishly illustrated book form. Slocum conveys an appreciably casual, almost self-deprecating, style. Contemporary reviews speak as well of it even now as "one of the most readable books in the whole library of adventure" (Sports Illustrated). "There is so much to this book that it is not surprising that it is has been continually in print since 1889.this book has literary merit, thoughtful and beautifully written and packed with incident" (Nautical Magazine).         A critical exposition of the philosophy of Leibnitz.

Cambridge University Press 1900 - Octavo. xvi, [ii], 311pp., original blue cloth gilt, light wear to head of spine. A fine example of the first edition of Russell's first strictly philosophical work, one of the most important studies of Leibniz ever published. It established an approach to studying philosophers of the past that emphasises the philosophical rather than the historical. In Russell's own words, `Philosophic truth and falsehood, in short rather than historical fact, are what primarily demand our attention in this inquiry.' His interpretation emphasised the logical and deductive power of Leibniz's system in opposition to the standard interpretations that had previously led Russell to believe that the Monadology (one of Gottfried Leibniz's best known works representing his later philosophy) was a kind of fantastic fairy tale.
