      - [Saigon/Phnom Penh n.d. ca. 1900-1907, Pierre Dieufefils et al.]. Brown cloth album, black pages, 86 b. w. postcards put in slits in each page, 2 cards back to back, album size: 23 x 13 cm., all cards very good, clean, a few vith messages. *** *** *** . . AN ORIGINAL PERIOD PHOTO POST CARD ALBUM . . . * This is a lovely collection of 48 old collotype photo postcards, together with 38 photo postcards of Angkor that appear to be newer, date unsure, probably 1920's-40's. All are black & white except for one which is hand-colored. . * The first group of 80 odd cards are on Cambodia in general, while the last group of 49 cards are all on various views of Angkor. . * THE SUBJECT & CONTENTS: General Cambodia: The album begins with 4 postcards of the King of Cambodia, views of the Royal Palace, gardens & gardeners, Cambodian classical dancers, several processions of Royal Elephants on promenade in Phnom Penh, Cambodian woman, girl, mother & child, native boys, various Cambodian people, soldiers, great monuments, pagodas, street processions & celebrations, famous streets, canals, houses, Buddhist priest houses, ox drawn carriages &c. . Angkor: Begins with a lovely "Souvenir d' Angkor done in a collage of photos spelling out "Angkor," followed by New Siemreap Hotel, the Siamese village in Siemreap, Buddhist priest homes, Angkor-Vat, pagodas, many views of Angkor-vat and environs, Angkor-Thom, Ta-Prohm, Le Baphoun, Le Bayon, Neak-Pean &c. . * PIERRE DIEULEFILS: A good number of these postcard photographs were taken by Pierre Dieulefils, the famous French photographer who worked in Hanoi, where he had a photo studio, and also sold his photo postcards. He traveled widely in Indo-China, where he took historic photographs of the people, ethic minorities, scenery, French-influenced government buildings, common people and a wide variety of images recording the way of life of these peoples from around 1899 onwards. He often visited Laos, Cambodia and most all places in both the north, central and south Vietnam. See us for a copy of his excellent and most famous pictorial reference book: PIERRE DIEULEFILS, PHOTOGRAPHE-EDITEUR DE CARTES POSTALES D'INDOCHINE, we may have it in stock. See below for details on this marvelous resource. . Dieulefilis took a large number of photographs of Cambodia, and these cards were published by him in Saigon and other places. Each of his photographed postcards are all marked with his red logo in a lower corner, numbered, and with French captions stating the place and subject matter. His photographs are classics, nicely composed and always clear and sharp. . Other cards are photographed by different photographers, such as Victor Fievet, Claude, Plante, F.H. Schneider, others are unnamed or at least we have not pulled out every item to see the photographer's name. One or two are actual photographs made into postcards. . * RARITY: Finding a substantial collection like this one is uncommon. We seldom have such a stunning collection showing a broad view in photographs of old Cambodia. The postcard condition is excellent, as is the cloth album binding. . * CONDITION: The majority of the cards are unused, 9 are with messages penned as well as cancelled postage stamps, some with dates, that show from 1904-1908. All postcards are in very good or better condition, with out damage. The brown cloth album has "Postal Souvenirs" stamped in gold on the front cover, all pages are held firm by a brown cord tied, with brass insert fittings to hold the pages in alignment, very clean condition. The leading edges of all pages are deckle cut. . *** REFERENCE: VINCENT, Thierry. PIERRE DIEULEFILS, PHOTOGRAPHE-EDITEUR DE CARTES POSTALES D'INDOCHINE. This is the one and only single and most excellent illustrated reference on the subject. Issued in a small printing, the book has been out of print for many years. It concerns the Dieulefilis postcards of Tonkin, Annam, Cochin-chine, Cambodge, Yunnan, Chine [Peking & Yunnan]. . NOTE: Please inq

London: Hutchinson and Co., 1900.. Octavo, pp. [1-4] 5-368, original pictorial red cloth, front panel stamped in black, gold and blind, spine panel stamped in black and gold. First edition. "Hyne's most famous fantastic novel ... This is the best of several novels published in the wake of Ignatius Donnelly's ATLANTIS: THE ANTEDILUVIAN WORLD (1882), which popularized the mythology of the sunken continent for Victorian readers. With tongue slightly in cheek, Hyne treated the myth as it really deserved to be treated: as a grandiose exercise in imaginative sensationalism." - Stableford, Scientific Romance in Britain 1890-1950, p. 129.       New York: Longmans, Green, and Co.,, 1900. A Tale of the Revolution in Laurania. Octavo. Original dark blue cloth, titles to spine and within single frame to front board gilt. Housed in a custom blue cloth flat back box. Spine slightly toned, a couple of light marks to contents, endpapers and edges slightly foxed. An excellent copy in bright cloth. First edition in book form, first printing, of Churchill's only novel, his third published book, but the first he undertook to write, and the second he completed. Churchill's melodramatic tale of liberal revolution in an autocratic Mediterranean state was originally serialised in Macmillan's Magazine between May and December 1899. This edition, published in 4,000 copies on 1 February 1900, preceded the UK issue by twelve days, possibly as US law required a foreign-authored book to be manufactured in America to ensure copyright protection. "Whether they deem it a key indication of Churchill's innermost philosophy and political morality or just a yarn, Savrola continues to exert a grip on devotees of the canon" (Langworth).

N.p. ca. 1900-1915. Black lacquer Japanese accordion album 34.5 x 27.5 cm., 4 post cards per page side,51 cards in all, very good, solid, mounted under threads, silk painted pages, cloth spine, some small chips to corners else solid. RARE ! *** *** *** . . . COLLECTION OF 51 EARLY KOREAN PICTORIAL POSTCARDS . . . BEAUTIFULLY CONTAINED IN A PERIOD JAPANESE LACQUER ALBUM . * This is an amazing and superb collection of fifty-one period black & white collotype photo postcards. Each card is slipped under orange threads to hold them in place, the last 4 cards inside the back cover are held down with old silver photo corners. . *** THE SUBJECTS: This collection was probably compiled by a Japanese who was working or visiting Chosen, Japan held Korea. The probable dates of the postcards range from about 1900-a dated post mark of 1912. . The collection covers some great rarities. A double-postcard panoramic view of Seoul, followed by other "bird's-eye views of Seoul, [Japanese] Governor-General's Residence, other government buildings, palace views, temples, gates, pagodas, main streets, parks, prostitute quarter, Keisang beauty, and a good number of women, girls, priest, dress, common people, itinerant sellers, street stalls, sellers, occupations, rural views, the Chosen Hotel & Korean Nobleman. . *** THE ALBUM. The album is black lacquer over wooden boards, typical of the turn-of-the-century -1920's type album. This one is however, very special, in that the thick pages are all silk gauze covered, and then color painted with lovely floral and other designs, then four threads are sewn in place to hold the corners of the postcards. The album has cloth covered pages that match the end coverings. It appears that a new spine of cloth was done at some time. The cover design sows a Japanese Rickshaw man pulling a Japanese woman in a rickshaw before a large Mt. Fuji. All of the painting is done in gold against a back background, with some touches of red to enhance here and there. The faces of the two people are "mother-of-pearl" and the man's face is complete and nice, while the woman passenger in the rickshaw has some loss and about half is present. . *** CONDITION OF THE LACQUER ALBUM: The album corners have lack some lacquer, and there are a few small cracks or bumps and scuffs to the front cover. The back cover has a few small pieces missing from the corners, back by and large in very nice condition. See also above "THE ALBUM" for other condition comments. . *** HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THE JAPANESE OCCUPATION OF KOREA: In 1910, an already militarily occupied Korea was a forced party to the Japan-Korea Annexation Treaty. The treaty was signed by Lee Wan-Yong, who was given the General Power of Attorney by the Emperor. However, the Emperor is said to have not actually ratified the treaty according to Yi Tae-jin. There is a long dispute whether this treaty was legal or illegal due to its signing under duress, threat of force and bribes. . Korean resistance to the brutal Japanese occupation was manifested in the nonviolent March 1st Movement of 1919, during which 7,000 demonstrators were killed by Japanese police and military. The Korean liberation movement also spread to neighboring Manchuria and Siberia. . *** THE POSTCARDS: Captions in both English & Japanese, found inside of the " " marks, where these marks are absent, there was no caption. . 1. "VIEW OF SEOUL" A very rare double-panoramic black & white photo postcard, showing the old city, with just a few larger buildings, the balance are small houses, the center fold is intact which is quite RARE and unusual to find in such excellent condition. Being a double card, we count this as two cards. . 2. "BIRD'S EYE VEIW OF KEIJI CITY" . 3. "BIRD'S-EYES VIEW ON SEOUL" . 4. "BIRD'S EYE VIEW OF KEIJI CITY" . 5. "MAIN STREET.         JAPANESE SEX ORGY SCROLL: A Color-Painted Hand-Scroll, Manuscript With Four Magn

Japan n.d. ca 1900-10. Silk-brocade outer hand-scroll,painte in colors on paper, backed with cloth, carved ends, silk- ribbon tie with a bamboo clip, 23.5 x 240 cm. long, each painting is 50 x 19 cm, the paintings are 19 x 209 cm. RARE! *** *** *** . . . KYOSAI'S ZANY PERSPECTIVE ON LOVE-MAKING . . * This work consists of four very zany views. . This is a spring-time celebration and Hana-mi or the Cherry Blossom viewing festival time. It shows a curtained area within the blossoming cherry trees, and a small group of people who have had more than enough to drink. The men display pinkness in his face, as do the women. . After drinking several bottles of hot Saki [rice wine] the celebratory mood has drifted into a sexually charged atmosphere, as the blossom viewers engaged in group sex play. . THE SCENES: 1. The scene of three men and four women each sexually engaged with partners, while the group shares the heat of ecstasy and carnal pleasures. Those partially clothed expose their genitals, kiss, embrace, make wild and passionate love. . 2.Illustrates a group of six men as they ravish a blissful woman. She eagerly and joyfully submits. . 3. This shows five women as they joyfully ravage a man. The engages each woman by all means: hand, foot & penis. Each woman flushes pin, in an orgiastic state. . 4. Exhibits a wayside tea shop for exhausted travelers. It was notorious that many of the girls working in such road-side shops were willing prostitutes for these strangers. . This fascinating scene shows three traveling men who have stopped for tea and rest. Three tea-maids willingly avail themselves by opening their Kimono revealing no under garments, the excited men display erect penis. . Two couples engage in love making and fore-play on the Tatami-covered benches. The third young man, apparently quite drunk sports the "Hi no Yoshin" ["fire watch" pouch], while he thumbs her the third tea-maids anal orifice while making love to her. . The lovely spring time scenery and season clearly noted by a hanging flag. . *** Spring or Haru, also that character read as Shun relates to the awakening of the erotic feelings and name-sake of SHUN-GA "Pictures of Spring." . * KAWANABE GYOSAI aka. later as KYOSAI 1831-89]: As usual, this erotic work is not signed by the artist. Erotic works were banned by the Shogun and jail time was required for anyone caught painting, printing or publishing such 'banned works.' It lacks the censor's Kiwame [seal], indicating a book on the black market. . The work is clearly done in Gyosai's firm, steady hand, in his unmistakable and eminent style with flair, humor and zest. . The work is a delight, representing his personal characteristics, illustrating humor, joy, pleasure and fun seeking entertainment. Kyosai was one of the leading artist of zany subject matter and most skilled and admired painter and woodblock print-maker of the period. . * This and all other Shunga are unsigned, artists commonly used ironic, 'play-on-word' or fake "Go" [studio names] to confuse the Shogunate censors. . This work is either that of Kyosai, or his star pupil Mano Kyotei who worked between ca. 1890-1910, and was well-known for his Kyosai copies, some were just plain fakes ! Done in the name of "adoration and respect" for his teacher. . * A superbly fascinating work ! . *** NOTE: Please visit our website for books & prints by books about Kyosai. Also posted to our website are a number of Shun Ga or Shun Bon [erotic Japanese books and prints] . *** BIBLIOGRAPHY: . BUCKLAND, Rosina. et al. A JAPANESE MENAGERIE: Animal Pictures of Kawanabe Kyosai. * KAWANABE Kyosao [later known as Gyosai]: Is well collected by world museums * Wikipedia stated about this title:: "The most important work about Kyosai's art and life was written by himself: Kyosai Gadan, or "Kyosai's Treatise on Painting", half autobiography and half painting manual. * WESTERN APPRECIATORS: Many westerners came to visit Kyosai, and their memoirs about the artist are valuable. The two important ones, both rare, were: Émile Étienne Guimet, Promenades Japonaises, Paris, 1880. * Josiah Conder: "Paintings and Studies by Kawanabe Kyosai," Tokyo, 1911. Conder was a serious student of Japanese art; after some initial rejections, he was accepted as Kyosai's pupil, and accompanied him for ten years until the master's death. * Timothy Clark, Demon of painting: the art of Kawanabe Kyosai, p.186 chronology, and the drawing #21, p.58 is very similar to the pose found in our painting of OTOHIME [Toyotama-hime], both in pose, facial quality, hair style and the general perspective. * ROBERTS, Laurance P.: A DICTIONARY OF JAPANESE ARTISTS: PAINTING, SCULPTURE, CERAMICS, PRINTS, LACQUER, p.100, stated of him: [Kyosai] "...was marked by a wild, eccentric humor...caricatures of full of fantasy and invention..." * [KAWANABE KYOSAI MEMORIAL MUSEUM].         Salesman's Sampler Album for Chromolithographic Transferware Decals

Hardcover. Cloth spine. Patterned paper pastedown on boards. . Very Good. N.d., circa 1900. Folio, 42 by 29.5 cm. 108 leaves, nine of which are folding, containing hundreds of samples of ceramic transferware. The decals include flowers and bouquets, fruits, picturesque views (buildings, panoramas, bucolic settings, harbors, etc.), Chinoiserie imagery, human studies (lovely young maidens, seraphs, children, animals (birds and horses), ornaments (Rococo, geometric, Art Nouveau). These various categories are mostly grouped separately, notwithstanding the frequent overlap (animal studies will have a floral element, the views might be framed with ornament, etc.) The final section shows various decals on a brown or black background which heightens the visual impact of the decals. These decals are generally the more elaborate and/or more spectacular ones, and in this section, there is no particular subject category order as far as we can discern. Many of these, perhaps two-thirds, are identical in terms of their imagery, to chromolithographic die-cuts of the period, except here the samples are not die-cuts but rather impressed onto the sheets. The rest are transfer images that one might also see on furniture but are definitively not of a more general decorative usability -- they are not what one might find on greeting or trade cards of the period. The decals are of varying size, and the pages range from a single decal to up to 13, with the majority of pages having one or two and but for a small number of pages, there are four or less per page. Each of the decals is accompanied by a printed stamp with a stock number (which is inked). From this we know the source of the album was a German company, probably one based in Bavaria, which was known for its high level of chromolithography, but we can't unfortunately identify the specific enterprise. Lifting of the surface to some of the decals, with loss to the imagery of those decals affected as part of the color is transferred to the tissue guard. This affects only a small percentage of the decals, and never is there a complete loss, but rather, merely a flattening of the color in these images. Some of the tissue guards are sticking to the underlying leaves, or there is a general stickiness to guards, thus resulting in the aforementioned instances of lifting. One page has a small cut-out, which we assume was done to remove a single decal. Some paper loss to the cover pastedown. Overall, this remains an exciting, extraordinary collection of transferware ornament and decoration from around 1900.

        Photo Album]: South Africa

South Africa 1900 - Oblong quarto. Measuring 9.5" x 11.5". String-tied photo album. A collection of 161 sepia toned or black and white photographs measuring between 2" x 3" and 6.25" x 8.5" affixed to stiff black paper with some of them laid in, and some captions on the back. All photographs are near fine or better in a very good photo album with a detached front board. The album contains snapshot photographs from a British family vacationing in South Africa at the turn of the century showing them camping in tents and cabins. The images include beautiful scenes of the countryside with some large photos of waterfalls and mountainsides as well as the indigenous people alongside the British settlers seemingly during or just after the Second Boer War, which ended in 1902. These include images of native peoples in traditional dress as well as farmers cultivating the soil with large plows. Interspersed throughout the collection are a few commercial shots with captions of "Zulu mothers," "Isipingo, Natal," and "The Club, Esplanade, Durban." The family went to the beaches where they spent some time with exotic animals including numerous pictures of a camel. An interesting album documenting South Africa during a difficult period of adjustment resulting from the clash of cultures both foreign and domestic.

        La Petite Russie d'autrefois.

Marks Skt. Peterburg 1900 - Folio (42.3 x 34 cm). VIII, 98, [2]pp., 21 colour lithographed plates; slightly soiled, some corners creased. Original folder with pictorial boards, presentation inscription to "Lilian Borovikowski, St. Petersburg, 1906 from Serge"; rubbed, with some spotting and soiling. Very good example of a Ukrainian artistic and academic collaboration, celebrating - under the Russian rule - the country history and past glory. Evarnitskiy (Dmytro Yavornytsky, 1855-1940) was a knowledgeable historian, ethnographer and lexicographer with marked pro-Ukrainian tendencies. He used for the present publication both primary and archival sources in his research, and a selection of them was later published as 'Istochniki dlya istorii zaporozhskykh kozakov' (Sources for the History of the Zaporozhian Cossacks, in 1903). He then became, in 1902, director of the Museum of Antiquities of Katerynoslav Gubernia (later the Dnipropetrovsk Historical Museum). His text mainly develops, in Russian and French, biographies of important Ukrainian figures, and is illustrated through the collaboration between two of the best artists and book decorators of the period, both also Ukrainian. Samokish's style in the present work echoes one of his masterpieces, the celebrated 4-volume 'Tsarskaya Okhota'. The plates show portraits in colour by Vasilkovskiy framed by lively scenes by Samokish. Both artists had already collaborated for Nicholas II coronation album, and later published together an album of Ukrainian folk ornamental motifs. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Morning. Owned and edited by Paris Nesbit QC. Volume 1, Number 1, 29 August 1900 to Number 18, 26 December 1900. [Bound with] Century (with which is incorporated 'Morning'), Volume 1, Number 19, 2 January 1901 to Volume 2, Number 32, 5 June 1901

Paris Nesbit (to Number 15), then John Newton Wood, Adelaide 1900 - 1900 and 1901. Foolscap folio, [242] pages. Each issue drop-title as issued, in contemporary flush-cut cloth-backed papered boards; cloth renewed; boards lightly worn at the extremities and a little marked; the contents are in fine condition. Number 32, the first one in Volume 2, is a different format - shorter and wider - and the leading margins are folded back 40 mm. 'The small religious newspaper "Morning" was founded in 1900 by the gifted but unbalanced lawyer, Paris Nesbit. The newspaper was initially used largely as a vehicle for his personal views on religion and Adelaide society. Nesbit unashamedly stated that the newspaper was his own voice and would be run "as Christ would if He were subject to the present limitations of my faculties" . . . Nesbit and his family - in particular his sister Agnes Benham - were interested in the "new thought" movement of the 1890s, with its socialism and sexual reform. . . Early issues of the newspaper contained items commenting on Nesbit's short stint in the Parkside Mental Asylum in 1898, which he felt had been politically motivated by his enemies, including the premier Charles Kingston. Kingston, as well as other political and church leaders, were criticised in early issues of the newspaper, as were various Adelaide lawyers. Nesbit felt particularly strongly about religious hypocrisy. Benham contributed book reviews and periodic articles, mostly on religious topics, during the early life of "Morning". Much attention was given by various contributors (many writing under pseudonyms) to Benham and Nesbit's views that ideal marriage relationships were based on intellectual and spiritual connection. . . After just four months Nesbit handed over the editorship of the newspaper to the printer John Newton Wood who steered the newspaper towards an interest in spiritualism and vegetarianism' (SA Memory, online). The final issue appeared in 1909. Please use the 'Ask Bookseller a Question' link below to confirm availability and postage charges. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Colored Co-Operative Pub, Boston 1900 - First edition. Illustration and cover designed by R. Emmett Owen. Red cloth decorated in pink and yellow. Front hinge professionally and invisibly strengthened else a lovely, just about fine copy of this important novel, the eighth published novel by an African-American woman, the first of the 20th Century, and one of the most important, notable for its realistic portrayal of lynching and prejudice in the unreconstructed South. Additionally, this was only the third novel published by a black-owned publishing company. Hopkins was the literary editor of Colored American Magazine, a short-lived but important periodical. Most copies we have seen have been bound in green, this is the first copy that we've seen bound in red cloth. A lovely copy of a very scarce and desirable novel. [Attributes: First Edition]

Junger Löwe, nach Schmetterlingen haschend. Originale japanische Tuschezeichnung.

1900 - Bildgröße 39,5 x 27,2 cm ca. 1900. Blattgröße 51,5 x 35,5 cm. Loses Blatt. Limited edition of 200 copies, this no. 66, specially bound in full leather by Bickers & Son, London. Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) remains one of the most renowned portrait painters of the Regency period. A child prodigy, at the age of 10 he was supporting his family with his portraits. He received his first royal commission, a portrait of Queen Charlotte, in 1790 (at the age of 21) and remained the most sought-after portrait painter in Britain for the next forty years. In a recent (2010) retrospective exhibit of Lawrence's work, it was said of him that "he [was] one of the great painters of the last 250 years and one of the great stars of portraiture on a European stage". This superb volume presents 65 of Lawrence's portraits done in Aquatint photogravure, with two of them hand-coloured, with a life of the artist and a catalogue of his work. ***DESCRIPTION: Custom bound by Bickers & Son, London in full green morocco, both the front and back boards have a decorative ruled border in gilt, raised bands on the spine, gilt lettering and decorations on the spine, top edge gilt, sewn headbands in cranberry, blue and ivory, inner gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers in shades of olive green, grey and ivory, limitation statement on the verso of the half-title page, this copy no. LXVI of CC, tissue-guarded hand-coloured frontispiece of Emily, Countess of Glengall, title page in brown and black with publisher's device in the center, many initial capital letters set in a decorative square using brown ink, Preface and life of Lawrence by Lord Ronald Sutherland Gower, Trustee of the National Portrait Gallery, photogravures bound in throughout the text with almost all of them being presented both in sepia and grey tones, all with lettered tissue guards, original ribbon marker still present, Table of Contents at the end followed by the List of Illustrations; large folio in size (approximately 15.25" tall), pagination: (i-iii) includes the half-title, limitation and title pages, blank (iv), (i)- iv includes the Preface, 1-97 includes the life of Lawrence, 98 is blank, (99)-176 being the Catalogue, (177)-181 the Table of Contents and List of Illustrations, blank (182), Printer's Statement (183) stating the text and plates were printed near Paris in 1899 - note that pagination excludes the plates. ***CONDITION: Volume is overall in near fine condition, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, straight corners with a minimum of rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings. Due to the book's weight the front joint is just beginning to crack, but the thickness of the boards means it is on the outer surface only and the board is firmly attached, as is the rear board; there is one scrape to the leather on the front board and extremely minor overall edgewear; the spine has sunned to a brownish-green. Internally there is some offset darkening to the free endpapers from the gilt inner dentelles and the book has a very faint musty odor. ***POSTAGE: Please note that due to the size and weight of this work additional postage may apply; we are happy to ship at cost to both domestic and international addresses, please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
