The Holy Bible Containing the Old and New Testaments According to the Authorised Version. With Illustrations By Gustave Dore

London Paris and Melbourne: Cassell & Company Ltd, 1900. Black covers with gilt titles and decoration, gilt edges to pages. The pagination is 1004, 186, 323 pp, being The Old Testament, The Apocrypha, The New Testament, ie a total of 1513 pages. There are 194 glorious engravings by Gustav Dore, full-page plates with a title at the bottom. Undated. 4 page family register beween Apocrypha and New Testament is filled in and runs from 1862 to 1984. The entries in the Births section change pen colour in 1903, so I am guessing that this volume is c 1900. The front covers are in near very good condition: several lines form indentations in the front surface but the cloth isn't torn/cut. Internally almost the only flaw is some minor age spotting: confined to outer pages and a few on interior margins. Two small closed tears are in the family register and one other interior page has a 1.5cm closed tear in a margin. The binding is in excellent condition. Lovely lovely book. 30cm by 24cm by 8cm. Packed weight is 4.5kg. Overweight, extra postage may be required outside Australia.. Hard Cover. Very Good-/No Jacket. Illus. by Gustav Dore. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

IN BOOKBINDING, THEN, AS IN OTHER CRAFTS

Hammersmith: Doves Press, ca. 3 November, 1900. ONE OF ABOUT 25 COPIES ONLY, for presentation to employees and friends of the press. Very Rare Unpublished Broadside RepresentingThe Beginning of Cobden-Sanderson's Doves Press. 197 x 267 mm (7 3/4 x 10 1/2"). Single column, 39 lines printed in Doves Press roman type on recto only. ONE OF ABOUT 25 COPIES ONLY, for presentation to employees and friends of the press. Tidcombe DPE-83. Top of verso with thin strip of light mounting discoloration (a small hole in this area skillfully repaired), one faint horizontal crease, a handful of very vague fox spots, but an excellent specimen, very clean and fresh. This is the exceedingly rare first item to be printed at the Doves Press: a passage from Cobden-Sanderson's article on bookbinding that sets forth his credo on the nobility of craftsmanship. In it, he calls for "the transformation of the workshop from a place in which to earn a wage, or to make a profit, into a place in which the greatest pleasure & the greatest honour in life are to be aimed at, pleasure in the intelligent work of the hand, & honour in the formation & maintenance of a great historic tradition." Before printing began on the Press' first book, "Agricola," Cobden-Sanderson decided to test the type. He chose this text to be printed in the form of a broadside that could be distributed and displayed (as our copy evidently was). The type was composed around June 1900 by John Henry Mason, and the page printed sometime in October by H. Gage-Cole, who inscribed and dated his own copies 3 November 1900. According to Tidcombe, "Copies were given to staff, pupils and friends 'to remind us of the spirit in which we should work'"; student Emily Preston "said it was considered a rare possession by the friends to whom it was presented." Only one other copy is recorded at auction since 1975.

(from the preface, p. vi). This is one of the earliest known examples of "nature-printing".         SISTER CARRIE

New York: Doubleday, Page & Co., 1900. First printing. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7 3/4 x 9 3/4 in. Red buckram covers with stamped black lettering and border on cover, lettering on spine. A very scarce true first edition, first printing, with "Copyright 1900" above the publisher's name on the copyright pg. No DJ, as issued. Condition of the book is VERY GOOD ; the covers and spine are clean and fresh, with only slight rubbing. The front corners have wear, with slight fraying, but not the rear. The ends of the spine are rubbed and soft, but show almost no fraying, which is rare. The spine is somewhat darkened, and all the black stamped lettering clear and unchipped except the publisher at base of the spine. The front hinge is separated, but the book overall remains tight. The rear hinge is just begining to separate, but looks fine. There is mild foxing to the endpapers, and the text is all very clean, with a faint waterstain lower left of the title pg. (see photos). This is an interesting association copy that belonged to Albert Bigelow Paine, author of many books, biographer and lettrist of Mark Twain's, who also was a member of the Pulitzer Prize committee. In his hand, in pencil on the ffep he's written: "This is a copy of the first edition of Dreiser's first book. It is now quite valuable, I believe. A.B.P. 1930" This is an exceptionally rare book, in unusually better condition - most have both hinges separated, and considerable fraying to the spine tips. It is also one of the indisputable greats of American 20th c. literature, and was so much maligned for it's truthful portrayal of Carrie's moral corruption, that very few copies were published in the first edition.

The Ascent of Mount St. Elias, Alaska

New York: Stokes. 1900. Hardcover. Very Good. First American edition, no date, 1900. Small 4to (11 x 7.5 inches; 28 x 19 cm), olive cloth gilt, with darker green panels on cover and spine, (16), 240 (2) pp., with 4 large panoramas and 2 folding maps in color including rare sketch map often lacking; illustrated throughout with plates and illustrations including many sepia and b/w photogravure plates on heavier stock, collated complete. VG copy; some light soil and bit of freckling to edges of binding and to back board, minor repairs to top of outer front and rear joints, very short repaired tear to middle of spine, contents VG with some moderate foxing throughout, heaviest to margins of photoplates, inner hinges have been strengthened expertly with japanese moriki paper, and there has also been some strengthening to the glue that holds the binding together; this was a glued or 'perfect' binding, not sewn signatures, and the original glue was dried out; we had the binding re- glued with both wheat paste and Jade-403 and then strengthened with some webbing and more japanese paper; the binding is now holding tight, but wide opening of pages would certainly result in renewed cracking between pages, it's just the nature of this particular ill-conceived book production. A great rarity and one of the most sought-after of the North American mountaineering classics.

        Sailing Alone Around the World.

New York: The Century Co., 1900. - First edition. Octavo, original blue cloth. Pictorially stamped in silver and green. Top edge gilt. Inscribed by author in the year of publication, "Spray/ New London/ July 10th 1900/ Joshua Slocum". In very good condition. Sailing Alone Around the World was published by Century Company in 1900. The sailing memoir records Slocum's amusing experience as the first person to sail around the world alone. National Fisherman called it "[a] literary gem, adroitly and engagingly written," but interest extends beyond mere sea-aficionados. Excitement for the voyage was universal, and Slocum was awaited by admirers at his ports. To these he gave popular lectures and lantern-slide shows upon his arrival, including the English writers Edwin Arnold and Arthur Ransome. The memoir was first published in installments before its popularity became such that it was issued in lavishly illustrated book form. Slocum conveys an appreciably casual, almost self-deprecating, style. Contemporary reviews speak as well of it even now as "one of the most readable books in the whole library of adventure" (Sports Illustrated). "There is so much to this book that it is not surprising that it is has been continually in print since 1889.this book has literary merit, thoughtful and beautifully written and packed with incident" (Nautical Magazine).         The River War, signed and dated by Churchill in the year of publication

This first edition, final printing of Churchill's second book was signed by Churchill on 28 December 1900, during his first lecture tour of the U.S.A. and Canada, for Major-General Sir Gerald Charles Kitson KCVO, CB, CMG (1856-1950), then serving as British Military Attache in Washington, D.C. The author's signature in black ink in two lines on the Volume I frontispiece verso read: "Winston S. Churchill / Dec.28.1900". Signatures in Churchill's early works are scarce, doubly so when dated and contemporary. The signature is in firm and more youthfully rounded script characteristic of his early signatures. The ink is mildly age-toned but quite distinct with minimal age-spreading. Four lines in pencil on the Volume I half title read: "Gerald C. Kitson / Military Attache / Washington / from the author". The same words in the same hand are written on the Volume II ffep. Churchill was just 26 years old. In October he had won his first seat in Parliament partly on the strength of his celebrity as a Boer War hero, having been captured and made a daring escape. Churchill intended his lecture tour to improve his finances at a time when Members of Parliament received no salary. Biographical sources and contemporary Canadian press (thanks to Ronald Cohen for invaluable help) indicate that Churchill lectured at Ottawa's Russell Theatre on 27 December 1900, leaving Ottawa either late afternoon or early evening of the 28th (likely via overnight train), arriving in Toronto early in the morning of the 29th. Before he was British Military Attache in Washington, Gerald Kitson was Commandant of Canad's Royal Military College. Kitson knew Lord Minto, the Governor General of Canada who hosted young Winston in Ottawa. On 28 December, the British Government named Kitson Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (C.M.G.). This may have been the impetus for Churchill to sign a book for Kitson that day, and makes particularly plausible Kitson's presence in Ottawa, likely at Government House where Churchill was staying. In 1902, Kitson became Commandant of the Royal Military College Sandhurst (from which Churchill graduated in 1894). It was a still very 19th Century Churchill who left this signature in this quintessential 19th Century book. While Churchill was abroad, Queen Victoria died, and the end of her 64-year reign also closed Churchill's Victorian career as a cavalry officer and war correspondent adventurer. Churchill returned to England in February 1901 to take his seat in Parliament and begin a 60-year career as one of the 20th Century's great statesmen. This first edition, third printing of The River War is not only the most scarce issue of the first edition, but also the last unabridged issue to this day. All three printings of the first edition (2,646 total) are virtually identical, issued respectively in November 1899, February 1900, and June 1900. Only 151 third printing copies were bound. This set is in very good plus condition, unrestored, wholly intact, worthy of the author's signature. The bindings are clean with bright gilt, trivial wear at extremities, and slight mottling on the blank Vol. I rear cover. Spine presentation is excellent - nicely rounded and entirely unfaded with only minor wrinkling at the spine ends. The massive weight of the text strained nearly all surviving original bindings. Here the Vol. I front hinge is a little tender but remains firmly attached and the Vol. II binding remains remarkably tight. The contents are excellent, with no additional ownership marks. Very light spotting in Vol. I is primarily limited to prelims and page edges. Light Vol. II spotting is intermittent throughout. All illustrations, maps, and plans are intact, as are the protective tissue frontispiece covers. The original black endpapers are intact, with no sign of typical gutter cracks. Additional detail and images upon request. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A2.1.b, Woods/ICS A2(a.3), Langworth p.29.

A Plain and Literal Translation of the Arabian Nights' Entertainments, now entituled The Book of the Thousand Nights and a Night. With Introductory and Explanatory Notes on the Manners and Customs of Moslem Men and a Terminal Essay upon the History of the Nights. By Richard F. Burton. [With: Supplemental Nights...with Notes Anthropological and Explanatory.]

Privately Printed by the Burton Club for Private Subscribers Only, [c.1900] . one of 1000 sets, 17 Vols., 8vo., numerous plates by Lalause and others, tissue-guards; deluxe binding of half tan morocco, spines gilt with 4 tools illustrative of the tales, t.e.g., by Bayntun with his stamp, touch of rubbing to head of spines, otherwise excellent Illustrated Benares Edition of by far the most widely celebrated of all Burton's works, and still the best translation, in deluxe bindings. "As a monument of his Arabic learning and his encyclopaedic knowledge of Eastern life this...was his greatest achievement. It is open to criticism in many ways; it is not so exact in scholarship, nor so faithful to its avowed text, as might be expected from his reputation; but it reveals a profound acquaintance with the vocabulary and customs of the Muslims, with their classical idiom as well as their vulgarest 'Billingsgate,' with their philosophy and modes of thought as well as their most secret...habits. Burton's 'anthropological notes,'... abound in valuable observations based upon long study of the manners and the writings of the Arabs. The translation itself is often marked by extraordinary resource and felicity in the exact reproduction of the sense of the original; Burton's vocabulary was marvellously extensive, and he had a genius for hitting upon the right word...."
